Daniel Farke says he was really 'pleased' with how £13m Leeds United man played against Tottenham - leedsunited.news
Description

Daniel Farke was full of praise for one Leeds United player despite his side’s loss to Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League.

Leeds United’s final match before the October international break ended in disappointment on Saturday with a 2-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.

Leeds will feel they should have got more from the game after another combative and competitive performance, but they once again were left, as Dominic Calvert-Lewin lamented, regretting their missed chances.

Mathys Tel put the visitors ahead against the run of play, but Leeds have made a habit of coming from behind and did so when Noah Okafor turned in a rebound.

Daniel Farke’s side had the momentum and plenty of chances to take the lead, but failed to capitalise on them before Mohammed Kudus pounced on a Gabriel Gudmundsson mistake to score.

There was no second comeback as Leeds slumped to a loss, but Farke moved to praise the impressive Okafor for his display after the match.

Daniel Farke sings praises of Noah Okafor

Speaking after the game, Farke moved to praise Okafor’s ‘positive’ display against a top Premier League side.

He told TNT Sports: “He was one of the many positives.

MORE LEEDS UNITED STORIES

“I was pleased that against such a good side like Tottenham, we were able to be the better side.

“Many, many positives, and Noah was one of them.”

Sadly, Okafor had to be taken off towards the end of the game, with Leeds really missing the winger in the closing stages.

Farke explained his subs by saying in his post-match press conference: “Was tricky, just had one winger.

“Noah Okafor was not able to play the full 90 minutes. Changed to a 3-5-2 to [try something different] and get more crosses in.”

Unfortunately, it didn’t work.

Noah Okafor is already looking like a bargain for Leeds United

Leeds paid an initial £13m to sign Okafor from AC Milan, which could rise to £18m, making him one of their 10 summer signings ahead of returning to the Premier League.

Though Leeds spent north of £100m in the summer, Okafor was the only new forward they spent money on, with Calvert-Lewin and Lukas Nmecha arriving on free transfers.

That’s put a lot of pressure on Okafor to perform, to be a creative spark and provide quality in the final third that can hopefully see them survive in the top flight.

Pressure that’s even more intense with Dan James and Willy Gnonto sidelined.

Okafor is certainly starting off on the right foot. He got off the mark against Spurs but has been repeatedly impressive with his poise on the ball.

The Swiss is confident in possession, always willing to take on full-backs and capable enough to beat them and carry Leeds up the field. He’s not afraid to muck in with defensive work, too.

Even if his fee does reach the full £18m, it looks like Leeds might have got a bargain.

Leeds United player ratings vs Tottenham, Calvert-Lewin and Gudmundsson mistakes costly but 8/10 star great - leedsunited.news
Description

Leeds United have fallen to a 2-1 defeat against Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League on Saturday and here are the player ratings.

It was a raucous atmosphere at Elland Road, with Archie Gray getting a warm welcome on his return, fuelled by Leeds United’s full-throttle start to the game.

Daniel Farke’s side rattled the post early on and rattled the visiting Tottenham with their physical approach to the match.

Yet, they once again found themselves a goal down when Mathys Tell fired into the top corner thanks to a deflection. The Whites got lucky when Mohammed Kudus missed a golden chance to make it two shortly afterwards.

But Leeds’ fighting spirit ensured they got themselves back into the game with Noah Okafor smashing in the leveller.

An entertaining, feisty and end-to-end half ended all square, but it would be Spurs who retook the lead, with Kudus finding the bottom corner to make up for his earlier miss.

Leeds continued to battle over the final half hour but didn’t really come close to getting back level. A disappointing result that could have been so much more.

Here’s how the players rated.

Karl Darlow – 6

Could do nothing about either goal, with deflections taking the ball out of his reach. Wasn’t challenged much, otherwise.

MORE LEEDS UNITED STORIES

Jayden Bogle – 5

A tough game for Jayden Bogle.

Though his cross did create the leveller, Tottenham got a lot of joy down his side. Destiny Udogie got in behind multiple times, and only poor finishing meant he wasn’t punished more severely.

Worked hard but was far from his best against tough opposition.

Joe Rodon – 8

Called into action time and again and had to use every ounce of his defensive nous in getting his body in the way of forwards, winning big headers and cutting out chances. Joe Rodon did particularly well in marshalling Wilson Odobert out wide as he went through on goal.

Unlucky not to score when his header hit the post.

Pascal Struijk – 6

Was caught flat-footed as Tel went through and the forward got the better of him to shoot, even if the deflection that took the ball in was unfortunate. His first misstep of the season. The second goal took a deflection off him as well.

Gabriel Gudmundsson – 5

Sadly, for a player who has otherwise been brilliant this season, it was yet another terrible mistake from Gabriel Gudmundsson that cost Leeds a goal. This time, he failed to deal with a long ball to allow Kudus to score.

He is forming a really dangerous partnership with Okafor on the left flank, though. The Swede charged up the field all game long to provide an overlap option, with the duo linking up repeatedly. However, that did lead to him being caught up field for the opener.

Sean Longstaff – 6

It was Sean Longstaff’s loose touch that first lost the ball to give Spurs their opening to score the first and he was beaten to a couple of other loose balls as well.

Yet, his distribution was tight and his set-piece delivery even better, as he nearly set up a Rodon goal for the second game running, but the centre-back was denied by the woodwork. Had a couple of good efforts but overran too much.

Ethan Ampadu – 5

Ethan Ampadu sets the physical tone of the team and Spurs really did not like his robust challenges, but it wasn’t enough to cover for a poor performance. The captain’s first touch was sloppy, Xavi Simons had the better of him, his tackling was mistimed (earning him a booking) and he was also culpable as Spurs scored the opener. Capable of much better.

Anton Stach – 8

This was exactly the type of showing Leeds need from Anton Stach, one that had the quality on the ball to go with his defensive attributes. The German was classy in possession and was at the heart of every well-worked Leeds attack up the field with clever passing.

He also won the ball back high up the field to create dangerous chances, which should have been converted. An all-action performance and strange that he was taken off over his midfield partners.

Brenden Aaronson – 7.5

Brenden Aaronson’s best display in a Leeds shirt in some time, especially from an attacking perspective. It was the American’s well-struck effort that created the rebound for Okafor to score but he was far more involved than that, showing lively skill and elegant touches that have been a rarity in his game.

In cruel contrast to how he usually plays, the hard-worker probably could have done more to help Bogle with Spurs’ dangerous left attack. Still, Aaronson is getting better with every game and is justifying his inclusion.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin – 5.5

It already feels like Dominic Calvert-Lewin is going to be a player of frustration for Leeds, as it’s clear just how good he could be.

The striker’s brilliant, unselfish touch from a cross created Okafor’s goal, yet when presented with three great chances of his own, he couldn’t take them. Skying from close range after being put clean through in the first half was particularly galling.

Leeds simply can’t afford to be missing chances like that. That isn’t the first time that has been said of Calvert-Lewin this season and it almost certainly won’t be the last.

Noah Okafor – 8

Okafor bagged Leeds’ 800th Premier League goal ever and his first as he smashed the ball in from close range. It was a goal that his performance deserved, with the Swiss being a threat from the opening minutes and delivering several threatening crosses that weren’t taken advantage of.

His confidence in taking on players, smart link-up play and pace are already proving to be crucial assets to Farke’s side and he’s looking like a bargain signing.

Substitutes

Ao Tanaka – 6

Injected urgency into a Leeds side that lost some mojo after going behind.

Jack Harrison – 5

Made little impact.

Joel Piroe – 5

Denied late on by a good save.

Lukas Nmecha – 4

Did little.

James Justin – 4

Came on late.

How Tottenham’s Archie Gray reacted to warm welcome on his return to Leeds United - leedsunited.news
Description

Archie Gray is back at Leeds United on Saturday and received a very warm reception from supporters at Elland Road.

It’s been a promising opening six games for Leeds United, who could be even higher in the Premier League table than their 12th position if it wasn’t for conceding some agonising late goals.

Daniel Farke’s side have a stern test on their hands ahead of the second international break of the season, though, as Tottenham Hotspur have made the trip to Yorkshire for Saturday’s early kick-off.

Thomas Frank has improved his new side but their form has faltered as of late, drawing three of their last four games and only managing to beat League One’s Doncaster Rovers.

With Spurs losing their last seven matches before an international break to boot, Leeds have a real chance to pick up a statement victory and get one over one of their favourite sons.

Archie Gray came up through the club’s academy to shine in the first team and continue the historic Gray dynasty, but left for Tottenham in 2024 when Leeds failed to get promoted after losing the play-off final.

Spurs signed Gray for £30m after triggering a release clause in his contract and now the midfielder is back at Elland Road for the first time since his exit.

It has been a happy reunion.

Archie Gray thanks Leeds fans for warm reception

Gray was named on the bench for the game, while his brother, Leeds’ Harry Gray, didn’t make the squad due to injury.

Archie was back on the Elland Road turf ahead of kick-off, though, for the warm-ups and Leeds fans could be heard cheering loudly after his name was read out on the tannoy system.

Gray returned the warm welcome in kind by applauding his former fan base.

Once the game had begun, Leeds fans gave Gray another big clap when he went down the touchline to warm up.

Unlike Gray, who remains beloved by fans, Tyler Adams was loudly booed on his return to the club with Bournemouth last week.

Fans even chanted “He’s had enough, he’s had enough” and gave a wild cheer when Adams was hooked early by manager Andoni Iraola.

How Archie Gray felt about Leeds United reunion

Speaking ahead of the match, Gray discussed how he was feeling about returning to Leeds, where he was raised and one which has such close ties to his family.

He told Tottenham’s official website: “I can’t wait. That’s my home, that’s where I’ve been raised and I’ve got so much love for Leeds but I’m playing for Tottenham now. We’ve obviously got a job to do at the weekend and we’re looking forward to that.

“Already, it feels a little bit weird that we’re going to be playing against a team where I’ve spent virtually my whole life.

“I’m so grateful for everything that they’ve done for me and I’m so proud to be from Leeds and be one of their own. Of course, it’s going to be unusual going back there this weekend, but we’ve got a job to do.”

Description

Leeds United’s Harry Gray could face Archie Gray today, and the latter has opened up on his Elland Road return ahead of Tottenham Hotspur’s visit.

The Gray family name is synonymous with Leeds United, and Archie Gray is one of five to play for the club after grandfather Frank, great uncle Eddie, father Andy, and brother Harry.

Gray has previously credited Leeds for his development during a 10-year association with the club, which started at the age of eight and ended after that big-money move from Leeds to Spurs last summer.

Daniel Farke talked up Gray ahead of Leeds vs Spurs in this week’s press conference. Similarly, Thomas Frank has given Gray advice ahead of a reunion with Leeds for the first time.

Gray’s Elland Road reception from Leeds fans should be a positive one, and he will be facing a number of his former teammates in the process as well. It could also see brothers take to the field at the same time.

Archie Gray speaks on Leeds return and Harry Gray reunion

Speaking via Tottenham Hotspur and their official website, Archie has discussed the fact that Harry and himself used to “kick lumps out of each other in the garden” as children.

That could happen today when Archie makes his first return to his boyhood club as a Spurs player, which is something he is finding strange, stating: “[It] already feels a little bit weird”.

He added: “I think half of the family will be in the Spurs end and half of them in the Leeds end! I’m joking of course, but hopefully he’s in the squad.

MORE LEEDS UNITED STORIES

“Obviously, he can’t control that but, you know, he’s just got to keep his head down and work hard in training because he’s got all the talent in the world.”

“He’s always been a striker, always been scoring goals, so hopefully he can keep doing that — just not against us! We always used to just kick lumps out of each other when we were in the garden.

“It would always end in tears but we loved every minute of it and it’s going to be weird, especially if he’s on the bench. He’s always been a little bit too young to play against me before.

“But we’ve both always been at Leeds and both had the same journey growing up. Seeing my younger brother with them, both of us playing for different teams, it’s going to be a little bit strange.

“But I’m just going to be fully focused on the game and nothing else when it comes.”

Tottenham fans want Archie Gray to feature against Leeds at Elland Road today. However, Spurs have also looked at Harry Gray among other clubs. Harry Gray is an injury doubt for Leeds vs Spurs, however.

Archie spoke about them potentially being on the pitch together, adding: “I don’t know what I’d say… I’ve never really thought about that. I guess it would be ‘just don’t score against us!’”

“I can’t wait.

Harry Gray’s Leeds United future amid Spurs interest in Archie’s brother

Harry Gray is the ‘prized jewel’ of Leeds currently, with no one impressing at academy level more since fellow wonderkid Archie smashed his way into the first-team.

Harry turns 17 this week and a Leeds United News exclusive revealed that Leeds are set to agree terms with the latest Gray off the production line.

But Farke says he is not rushing Harry Gray’s involvement. That’s despite the fact Gray has been nominated for awards at U-21 level already.

That was very likely to stir up more interest in Leeds’ young striker from Spurs, but it appears that Leeds will be hanging onto him for now.

Leeds United nurtured Archie Gray, but he is now a Tottenham Hotspur player ahead of his return to Elland Road today.

The 19-year-old comes from a long line of famous Leeds United players with the last name Gray, and brother Harry Gray could also be involved in some capacity against Spurs.

Gray lifted the Europa League with Tottenham and he faces Leeds today as a Champions League player, which comes just over a year after leaving West Yorkshire when Leeds were a Championship club.

Gray even referenced Leeds after he won the Europa League, with Gray’s Leeds colours remaining despite joining Spurs. But, despite coming through the ranks from the age of eight, it’s unclear how he will be welcomed today.

Leeds United fans provide verdict on Archie Gray’s return to Elland Road

Anton Stach has fired Spurs and Gray a warning already today, particularly regarding how Leeds will battle today in midfield. However, Gray thanks Leeds for his development during a 10-year association with the club.

In fact, Daniel Farke outlined a potentially very bright future for Gray in this week’s press conference. Similarly, Thomas Frank has offered Gray advice regarding his reunion with Leeds.

Despite his family name, the Leeds academy graduate was sold to Spurs after just one professional season at the club. Gray played 52 times under Farke in 2023/24.

It remains to be seen how likely he is to start, even if Tottenham fans want Gray to feature against Leeds at Elland Road today. It also begs the question over how he will be received.

MORE LEEDS UNITED STORIES

Speaking on X (formerly Twitter), one fan said: “He’s a Gray – It should be nothing but respect.”

Another added: “His family has given their lives to Leeds. His brother plays for us , he still supports and follows us . Very likely to come back to us at some point in his career. I reckon we’ll beat spurs but their facilities, coaching staff and players are levels above us.”

A further response read: “He’s a Leeds fan, a former player and his kid brother is in our squad. He’s related to Eddie. Anyone who doesn’t give him a great reception is a complete tool. He didn’t want to be sold. We sold him cos we had to.”

Of course, some claimed they would be keen to boo. But the vast majority of the replies read similarly to the above, and another stated: “Respectfully, he’s leeds and he knows he is.”

How many other players have played for both Leeds United and Spurs in recent memory?

It’s easy to believe the youngster jumped ship when the reality is also that Gray helped Leeds out a lot financially, even if his departure threatened to be a major blow for the Whites that summer.

Gray has broken Spurs records, but it’s fair to say his development has slowed down this season after a raft of new signings in midfield and defence. A former Leeds player is keeping him out of the right and left-back roles.

That is Djed Spence, who could be one of three players today who has featured for both clubs. Joe Rodon and Spence could take to the pitch with Gray.

Since Adam Smith and Andros Townsend in 2011, Jack Clarke and Manor Solomon are the only two other players to have played for both clubs.

Description

Leeds United are set to play Spurs at Elland Road today, with the game scheduled to kick-off at 12.30pm as the first Premier League fixture on Saturday.

It’s the seventh matchday of the Premier League season, with it also being Leeds United’s fourth outing at Elland Road. As of this morning, the Whites have not lost a home league match in 384 days.

They will hope Daniel Farke continues his record against Tottenham. However, this will be his first fixture against Spurs when he is in charge of Leeds, having taken 190 points during two seasons in the Championship.

The newly-promoted clubs are holding their own well so far, which is a significant reason to be positive. Another consideration is that Thomas Frank has not yet got Spurs’ attack clicking after replacing Ange Postecoglou.

Leeds’ dismal early kick-off record in the Premier League

When it comes to the game of football, it is a sport which can be impacted by variance more than many others. Chance and random strokes of luck come into it, but Opta believe Spurs will get something at Elland Road.

Whatever the outcome, the two managers will end the game full of respect for one another. In their pre-match press conferences this week, Farke spoke of his Frank admiration ahead of Spurs‘ trip to West Yorkshire.

Frank reciprocated those feelings towards Farke on Friday ahead of today’s game between the duo. It’s a game which could be tight or wide open, depending on how aggressively Farke wishes to play the early kick-off.

It is that particular aspect, with the Premier League choosing the game to be broadcast live on TNT Sports, which is the problem for Leeds, amid plenty of other reasons to be hopeful.

MORE LEEDS UNITED STORIES

That is because Leeds haven’t won any of their last 11 Premier League matches that have kicked off before 3.00pm. They have drawn two and lost nine since a 3-0 win over Chelsea in August 2022, which was a 2.00pm kick-off.

It’s a shocking three-year record now, which was also a problem in the Championship for much of last season as well. The ray of optimistic sunshine is Leeds have won in their last two 12.30pm kick-offs in the second tier.

They beat Preston North End 2-1 at Elland Road in April and won the title with the last kick of a ball from Spurs loanee Manor Solomon during a 2-1 win away at Plymouth Argyle.

Paul Merson and pundits predict Leeds United vs Tottenham Hotspur

Alan Shearer is confident Leeds will draw with Spurs. He is just one of a number of pundits who have hope for Leeds. That’s because Chris Sutton has predicted a draw in Leeds vs Spurs.

He is not the only one who views this as a tough test for Frank and co. as Ally McCoist rates Leeds’ chances against Spurs as well. Paul Merson spoke to Sportskeeda to provide his, stating: Tottenham are a bit strange; they aren’t a 90-minute team!

“I’ve noticed that Spurs start playing their best football only after they go behind in games. It’s easy to play when you’re losing, that takes the pressure off your back. But they can’t keep doing it if they want to be ambitious under Thomas Frank this season.

“Spurs showed good character to come from 2-0 down to draw against Brighton. But since then, they have struggled against both Wolves and Bodo/Glimt, failing to win them games. So I don’t think they’re as great as some people say!

“This is a tough game for Tottenham because Leeds have been quite good at home. If at the start of the season, you told Leeds that they can get a point from this fixture, they would have happily accepted it. And that’s exactly what I think will happen here.

“Leeds’ form at home will be crucial to their chances of avoiding relegation and they have shown enough to suggest they can hold Spurs to a draw at Elland Road. I expect goals in this one. Prediction: Leeds United 2-2 Tottenham Hotspur.”

Leeds United take on Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League on Saturday and there has been a hint that a talented youngster could be involved.

It’s been a promising start to the Premier League campaign for Leeds United, who have renewed hope they can survive in the top flight with a string of strong performances.

Daniel Farke’s side have allowed three precious points to slip through their fingers already with agonising late goals, but have competed well with every side they’ve faced so far – other than title contenders Arsenal.

Fellow North Londoners Tottenham Hotspur are next up on Saturday, with Thomas Frank’s side heading to Elland Road for the day’s early kick-off.

Though Spurs have looked bright under their new manager, they could only draw with Wolves last time out and have only beaten League One’s Doncaster Rovers in their last four fixtures.

Leeds have a real chance to register a statement victory, but with injuries mounting, there is a chance youngster Rhys Chadwick could be involved.

Rhys Chadwick could be in the squad for Leeds vs Spurs

Scott Gardner’s Under-21s side was in action on Friday afternoon, as they took on their West Brom counterparts in a league fixture.

Goalkeeper Rory Mahady was in goal after his impressive loan game at Scunthorpe United this week, as were Alfie Cressell and veteran Jonny Howson.

MORE LEEDS UNITED STORIES

Conspicuous by his absence, though, was talented midfielder Chadwick, whose lack of involvement could suggest he is in Farke’s first-team plans for the Tottenham fixture.

Chadwick was called up to senior training this week ahead of the game and could be in contention to make his competitive debut for the club.

Farke has been impressed with the teenager, who travelled with his side for the pre-season training camp in Germany and has been involved in several training sessions. He even came on off the bench in the pre-season draw with Manchester United in Sweden

Daniel Farke is already feeling the strain of injuries in the Premier League

The Premier League truly is one battle after another and Farke is already feeling the strain of injuries.

Leeds have lost seven players to injury already this season, a figure that could soon rise to eight as Chadwick’s academy teammate, Harry Gray, is a doubt for Saturday.

It would be a real shame for Gray to miss the match, given it’ll be brother Archie Gray’s return to Elland Road.

Though Lucas Perri is back in training, he is still unavailable, while forward duo Willy Gnonto and Dan James will miss the match, too.

So many injuries have opened the door for Chadwick to be involved, but his position of midfield is one of the few areas where Leeds are fully stocked. As a result, it’s unlikely he will get on the pitch, if he is even named on the bench.

Leeds United host Tottenham Hotspur at Elland Road on Saturday lunchtime in the 12.30pm kick-off for matchday seven of the Premier League season.

This Leeds United team under Daniel Farke remains unbeaten for over a year in league fixtures at Elland Road. In fact, the Whites have lost just three of the last 49 league games at Elland Road since he was instated as manager.

Better still, Daniel Farke has a great record against Tottenham. However, this will be his first in charge of Leeds against Spurs. It means there are reasons to be positive, especially as Spurs’ attacking issues offer Leeds hope, too.

Even with all of that factored in, Opta believe Spurs are likely to win or draw against Leeds. Farke also has three wins and two draws against Thomas Frank. That said, Farke was full of Frank admiration ahead of Spurs‘ trip to West Yorkshire.

Spurs can break two Elland Road records against Leeds United

Farke’s words were reciprocated by Frank ahead of tomorrow’s game, which sees fourth play 12th in the Premier League — although it offers Leeds the chance to go level with their visitors.

Chris Sutton has provided his verdict on Leeds vs Spurs but he is not the only one who views this as a tough test for Frank and co. Ally McCoist is bullish about Leeds’ chances against Spurs.

Meanwhile, Alan Shearer believes Leeds will draw with Spurs. It is a game being played live and in front of the TNT Sports cameras. One development has since emerged, though, and it is one which will concern Leeds fans if it transpires.

MORE LEEDS UNITED STORIES

That is because Tottenham have won both of their last two league visits to Elland Road and they could set an unwanted record for their hosts. That is by beating Leeds away from home three times running in the league for the very first time in their history.

That spans 103 competitive outings, which puts into perspective why they will be desperate to avoid it. Elland Road has been a fortress, but seemingly not against Spurs. There is another record Spurs could set, which would be far worse for Leeds.

Leeds have shipped four goals in their last two home Premier League games against Spurs, losing 4-0 in Marcelo Bielsa’s last game in charge and 4-1 in their final game of 2022/23 before being relegated.

For all the talk regarding the strength of Leeds at home, a thumping loss of that magnitude again would also set an unwanted record. That’s because no side has ever scored four goals in three away league matches at Elland Road in a row.

It’s an added motivation for Leeds to avoid either outcome, but a welcome bonus for Spurs if they can improve in an attacking sense from their recent games at Elland Road.

The size of the Elland Road task becomes clearer for Spurs amid George Graham reveal

As mentioned, Leeds have now gone over a full year (383 days) without losing a home league game, with their 23-game run at Elland Road beginning on 28 September 2024 against Coventry City.

That came after a 1-0 defeat to Burnley, which was one of only four losses last season, and the only league defeat at Elland Road.

However, now in the Premier League, they have drawn their last two. That is significant as they have not drawn three in a row at home since September 2023.

The last time they were in the Premier League, they last did that during a run of five in a row between March and August 1997 under former Spurs and Arsenal manager George Graham.

Thomas Frank shares honest verdict on Leeds United and Daniel Farke with ‘one of the best’ claim - leedsunited.news
Description

Thomas Frank is taking his Tottenham Hotspur side north to face Leeds United and Daniel Farke at Elland Road in the Saturday lunchtime fixture in the Premier League.

Leeds United are on a 383-day unbeaten run at Elland Road, as of the Friday before facing Spurs. Not only that, but Daniel Farke is hoping to protect a strong managerial record against Tottenham.

He has won three and drawn two in his only five meetings with Thomas Frank as well. It all sounds positive when you consider it is a new-look Spurs team still finding its feet under Frank since his arrival from Brentford.

Tottenham’s creativity issues in attack offer Leeds hope, too. It’s part of the reason Alan Shearer is confident Leeds can take something against Spurs in front of the TNT Sports cameras.

Spurs manager Thomas Frank praises Daniel Farke and Leeds United

Others, such as Opta, believe Spurs have the stronger chance at Elland Road. But Ally McCoist is more positive about Leeds’ chances vs Spurs. It’s a battle between two managers who have huge respect for one another, though.

Farke praised Tottenham manager Frank yesterday, outlining his admiration. The Spurs boss has responded in kind to those quotes when speaking in his Friday press conference, via Tottenham Hotspur.

Frank said:”I think Leeds have done very well since they have got promoted. Elland Road is one of the best games to go to because the atmosphere is always great.

“Clearly, they have been very good at home. They give very little away in open play. It could be 90 minutes back and forth.”

MORE LEEDS UNITED STORIES

On top of that, Frank also detailed his view of Farke. As posted on X (formerly Twitter) by Beren Cross, he said: “Happy he’s doing well and they got a good start and show how great their coach is and staff.

“We’re going to Elland Road, which I always admire as one of the best stadiums to go to because the atmosphere is fantastic. So, it’s a game we’re looking forward to play.”

Frank also offered Archie Gray advice ahead of Leeds, especially regarding what must come next for him to develop further.

The worrying Spurs stats ahead of facing Leeds

Chris Sutton has been pleasantly surprised by Farke proving him wrong but there are reasons for Leeds to think they can claim victory in tomorrow’s game, and not just a point.

That said, some of the stats surrounding the game aren’t as positive as Farke’s record vs Frank. That’s because Leeds have lost nine of their last 11 Premier League games against Tottenham.

That includes one win and one draw but also the fact Leeds have lost each of their last four in a row, which is their longest ever league losing run to Spurs.

Then there is the fact Spurs have picked up seven points in their three away Premier League games in 2025/26, winning two (Man City and West Ham United) and drawing one (Brighton & Hove Albion).

It’s as many as in their previous 11 games on the road combined, having won two, drawn one, and lost eight in that time. They may have some fair concerns, but they are in decent nick ahead of facing Leeds.

Leeds United sold Archie Gray to Tottenham Hotspur in the summer of 2024, during a window where Crysencio Summerville and Georginio Rutter were also major sales.

Spurs activated his release Leeds United release clause, meaning the Leeds academy graduate was sold to Spurs after just one professional season at the club in the 2023/24 Championship campaign.

Gray helped Leeds out immensely financially but his departure threatened to be a major blow for the Whites, having also sold that key attacking duo and therefore needing to rebuild the squad for the second consecutive summer.

After disappointment at Wembley just over a year ago, Leeds instead secured the title last season. In that same campaign, Gray won the Europa League with Spurs and he will face Leeds on Saturday as a Champions League player.

Thomas Frank details what next for Archie Gray ahead of Leeds United vs Tottenham

Gray even referenced Leeds upon lifting the Europa League, with Gray’s Leeds colours continuing to shine through at Elland Road.

After a solid first season, Gray is rubbing shoulders with Cole Palmer and he continues to improve. The 19-year-old has been a victim of his own versatility, having been utilised at right-back, centre-back, and in defensive midfield.

Gray is a box-to-box midfielder, but that could hinder him without being specialised in such a role. Gray has thanked Leeds for his development, though, in spite of his usage at right-back more than his best starting role.

Farke detailed a bright future for Gray in yesterday’s press conference. In today’s, Thomas Frank provided his exciting verdict on the midfielder (via Tottenham Hotspur).

He said: “He’s still a very young man. He played a lot of Premier League minutes [last season], across the defence and in midfield. So many experiences. Some tough moments and in those you develop. I really, really like him as a player.

Frank then added his advice to Gray going forwards, ahead of the trip to return to Elland Road for the first time. He concluded: “He needs to keep doing as he’s doing.

“Came on against Bodo, part of making a difference. He did well against Doncaster [Rovers] and learned a lot. I like everything about him.”

Such was the quality of his display against Doncaster, Spurs fans want Gray to start against Leeds at Elland Road. However, his game time has been more limited in 2025/26.

Archie Gray’s chances of starting for Spurs against Leeds

Following a number of new defensive and midfield reinforcements, Gray’s importance has waned and his place in the pecking order isn’t what it was.

It’s why some Spurs fans wanted to see Gray return to Leeds in the short-term on loan this summer, having featured in some capacity in 46 of Spurs’ 60 games in all competitions last season.

This campaign has seen Gray play some part in five of their nine fixtures. However, that is just a start against Doncaster and a start on opening day against Burnley.

Despite Farke’s comments and Frank’s, it does not seem likely that he will play from the start away to Leeds. In some ways, it’s a shame, given the midfield battle could be vital tomorrow and Anton Stach has fired Gray and Spurs a warning already.
