When Ange Postecoglou could be back at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium amid major exit news

Ange Postecoglou could be set to make an unexpected return to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this season.

When the dust settled and emotion was taken out of the decision, it seemed as though Daniel Levy made the right decision to sack Postecoglou earlier in the summer.

Despite the Australian manager delivering that unforgettable night in Bilbao, the league is a club’s bread and butter and finishing 17th with Spurs with 22 Premier League defeats proved to be too concerning to ignore.

Just as Thomas Frank kicked off his tenure with an emphatic win over Burnley, Postecoglou is the name back on every Spurs supporter’s lips.

Ange Postecoglou could return to face Tottenham this season

Tottenham supporters know first-hand just how unpredictable Nottingham Forest’s owner, Evangelos Marinakis, can be after he effectively blocked Morgan Gibbs-White’s move to Spurs singlehandedly.

MORE SPURS STORIES

The controversial owner has made headlines yet again after reports suggest that former Tottenham and current Forest boss Nuno Espirito Santo’s position is now under threat after a fallout with the board.

Postecoglou is one of the names linked with the Forest job, as the Australian could return to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium much sooner than anticipated.

Thomas Frank’s new approach is beginning to work

Despite being in the infancy of his tenure at Tottenham, it is clear that Frank’s principles are being reflected in their style of play.

In the victory against Burnley, we saw an emphasis on crosses with the Dane possessing a more direct philosophy as opposed to the more free-flowing and open style of Postecoglou.

The defensive foundations that Frank has already put in place were also evident, with Spurs keeping their first clean sheet in the Premier League since February last weekend.

It’s early days, but in Frank, Spurs seem to have struck a balance of still being a threat going forward, whilst not being a complete liability at defending like they were under Postecoglou.

‘Jan Paul van Hecke to earn massive bonuses’ at Tottenham amid defensive signing update

Tottenham could land the signing of Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton with the promise of an increased contract.

Van Hecke, 25, has emerged as a target for Spurs as his contract at the Amex ticks down towards its final year.

The Netherlands international has been a key asset for the Seagulls in recent years, but could switch the south coast for the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this summer.

The Lilywhites are seemingly interested in adding a new centre-back to their ranks this summer, with Tottenham previously showing interest in Illia Zabarnyi before his move to PSG.

This could see Thomas Frank and Co. go all in to land van Hecke from Brighton, something which could see the defender land a sizable pay rise.

MORE SPURS STORIES

This story includes exclusive comment from former Premier League midfielder Martin Allen.

Tottenham have ‘huge amount of money’ to spend on wages

It is fair to say that the N17 club have excellent quality in the centre-back roles right now, but depth will certainly be required for a busy season.

Luka Vuskovic could be loaned out by Spurs this summer, but is arguably in their second-string side right now, with just over a week remaining in the transfer window.

Current centre-back depth at Tottenham:

If an injury were to strike down Cristian Romero or Micky van de Ven, Frank would certainly be left in a hole, in a similar fashion to Ange Postecoglou last season.

As a result, making a swoop at Brighton to land the Dutchman makes sense, especially with van Hecke likely to pass a medical at Tottenham.

The 25-year-old doesn’t want to sign a new contract, something Allen believes could allow Spurs to swoop in and table a sizable offer, which would see him move to North London.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Allen said: “Oh god, yeah, they could convince him to join.

“Tottenham have got a huge amount of money from qualifying for the Champions League. That has totally changed their potential shopping list.

“Van Hecke is a good player, and he will want to step up to that level.

“It won’t just be about money for him, it’s also the chance to play in the Champions League, that is what every player wants. There will be other clubs in for him for sure.

“He’d be underneath the wages of Romero and van de Ven, but if he plays regularly, they will go much higher.

“If he’s starting for the team, his bonus for playing and starting every game will be massive.

“He’s got a bit to do to do that, but Tottenham will want someone like him to call on without worrying about weak links in the squad.“

Jan Paul van Hecke would represent coup for Thomas Frank

After already coming under heavy criticism this summer, Daniel Levy can’t afford for any other targets to fall through the net.

As a result, making van Hecke an offer he can’t refuse could prove to be wise before the 1 September deadline, especially after he snubbed an extension at Brighton.

With that being said, the former NAC Breda man could prove to be an excellent addition to the Lilywhites’ squad, moving into a busy campaign.

Van Hecke has excellent quality on the ball and defensively, something which would certainly suit the tactical approach of Frank moving forward.

His addition could come at a good time for Spurs, as Romero constantly gets linked with a move away, and at some stage, an exit could be activated, with the Dutchman likely to represent a key asset if that happens.

Lucas Paqueta deal ‘there to be done’ for Tottenham in shock £40m transfer

Description

Lucas Paqueta could be just what Tottenham needs after missing out on Eberechi Eze.

Daniel Levy was humiliated when Arsenal hijacked Eze’s transfer hours before the pen was to be put to paper. This represents a resounding failure on the chairman’s behalf.

Tottenham missed out on Morgan Gibbs-White after he decided to extend at Nottingham Forest. Meanwhile, Johnny Cardoso signed with Atletico Madrid despite an agreement with Real Betis to sign him at a discounted price.

But all could be forgiven if Levy gets Paqueta’s transfer over the line before 1 September.

This article includes exclusive comments from Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham.

Mohammed Kudus’ transfer paves the way for Lucas Paqueta

Tottenham signed Mohammed Kudus from West Ham earlier this summer. The Ghanaian has settled into life at Hotspur Way.

After he stunned spectators in Spurs’ defeat to PSG in the UEFA Super Cup final, he shocked fans again when he assisted Richarlison’s spectacular double against Burnley in the Premier League.

It is well documented that Paqueta would be keen on a fresh challenge next season. Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – believes Kudus’ deal could prompt West Ham to sell Paqueta to Spurs this summer for around £40million.

“My left field suggestion at this point, keeping in mind that Tottenham have already done a deal with West Ham this summer, is we now go and get Paqueta,” Wenham said.

“The fact that we’ve gone in and got a player from West Ham already tells me a deal could be done, whether they would sell twice in one summer, I don’t know, but I would now go and get Paqueta, and I think it’s an outstanding player.

“I think he’s probably available for £40-45m. I think there’s better value in that deal than spending £80m, plus what they’re now talking about on Savinho.”

Is Lucas Paqueta a better fit for Tottenham?

Eze spent quite a bit of his game time for Palace on the wings last season. But there are several conclusions to be drawn if comparing his 2023/24 season with Paqueta’s 2024/25 season.

The Englishman is an excellent carrier of the ball, with him recording 97.1 carries to the Brazilian’s 49.1. He also eclipses Paqueta in his percentage of forward passes and made slightly more key passes.

However, the Hammer’s star is stronger on every other metric. Progressive passes and possession won are two standouts. Paqueta recorded 86.3 in progressive passes to Eze’s 27.4, while his possession won stands at 66.1 to his competitor’s 9.1.

All things considered, Paqueta slightly edges Eze as the better signing for Tottenham. His attacking prowess, coupled with his defensive skills, offers completeness that the future Arsenal midfielder lacks.

Description

Tottenham sacked Ange Postecoglou after finishing 17th in the Premier League.

Life under Postecoglou was miserable for Tottenham, and those in North London will be hoping that Thomas Frank can find significantly more success domestically.

So far, that is going to plan off the back of Tottenham’s 3-0 win against Burnley in the Premier League opening game.

However, Spurs fans hoping to forget about Postecoglou may have to look away, as he could be set to make a return to the Premier League.

Nottingham Forest considering Ange Postecoglou hire

Tottenham were linked with Nuno Espirito Santo when they opted to sack Postecoglou, though those rumours quickly died down and he remained at Nottingham Forest.

MORE SPURS STORIES

However, according to Matteo Moretto via X on 22 August, Forest are now considering whether to sack Nuno after a reported fallout with the board.

Several names have already been mooted for the job which, given their European football, will be appealing, though it will depend on several factors.

One of the names linked with the role is Postecoglou, who had recently been mooted for the LAFC job while also being touted for a managerial role in Saudi Arabia.

Tottenham will face Nottingham Forest in December, and there is every chance they could be playing against a team managed by Postecoglou.

Just how bad was Ange Postecoglou at Tottenham?

Postecoglou ended Tottenham’s 17-year trophy drought and still got sacked; that is how bad things really were domestically.

Had it not been for the lack of quality from the bottom three, Tottenham could have been embroiled in a relegation battle, which would have been disastrous.

Spurs lost a shocking 22 times in the Premier League last season, winning the fewest number of games out of anyone in the league aside from the relegated trio.

His departure was needed, though it seems as though he won’t be out of work for long.

Description

Tottenham have endured a tough transfer window when it comes to signing an attacking talent.

Morgan Gibbs-White was an early Spurs target, but Nottingham Forest’s stance on the England international made a move impossible.

Thomas Frank’s side have since missed out on Eberechi Eze, meaning they are still on the lookout for reinforcements.

However, their transfer misery may end as Florentino Perez could inadvertently pave the way for Savinho in North London.

Tottenham determined to land Savinho from Man City

Spurs were dealt a blow in signing Savinho, with Pep Guardiola seemingly wanting him to stay at the Etihad Stadium.

MORE SPURS STORIES

However, the situation could change between now and the end of the transfer window, which closes on 1 September.

Last season, the Brazilian enjoyed an encouraging first season in England, notching 14 goal contributions in all competitions.

However, the right-winger was absent from Guardiola’s opening day squad as they thrashed Wolves 4-0 at Molineux.

Tottenham are determined to press on with a move for Savinho, according to the Daily Mail (21 August).

The publication reports that he has always been a target separate from Eze and is valued by City at £67million.

Furthermore, it is said a deal will be more likely if Guardiola is successful in his chase of Rodrygo from Real Madrid.

Daniel Levy is therefore relying on opposite number Florentino Perez at Madrid to help soothe the pain of missing out on Eze.

Spurs cannot afford to miss out on any more targets after Eberechi Eze debacle

Time is running out for Spurs to secure more signings, and they simply cannot miss out on any more targets.

There is just over a week left before the window closes, and the Lilywhites still need attacking players.

James Maddison could miss Tottenham’s entire season after he ruptured his ACL against Newcastle United in pre-season.

Moreover, the North Londoners are competing on all fronts this season and therefore need added quality and depth.

In Savinho, they would get that, and if they want him badly enough, then that could be enough to lure him to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

However, dally any longer and Spurs will not be ready to compete as expected.

Tottenham were very close to hiring Arne Slot in the summer of 2023, but their fans will now be angry at him.

Spurs targeted Slot but could not agree a compensation package with Feyenoord, and the Dutchman would go on to join Liverpool a year later.

Slot has since won the Premier League title, while Tottenham’s manager of choice Ange Postecoglou was dismissed at the end of last season.

Postecoglou won the Europa League and finished 17th in the Premier League, but he was hard done by in terms of injuries within his squad, and Slot can now relate to the problems the Australian faced at Spurs.

Arne Slot bemoans Liverpool injury cluster

Liverpool will face Newcastle in their second Premier League game, but they could be without all three of their best right-back options, with Jeremie Frimpong, Conor Bradley, and Joe Gomez all injured or lacking match fitness.

MORE SPURS STORIES

Speaking in his pre-match press conference, Slot bemoaned this bad injury luck, and highlighted how difficult it is to have several injuries affecting one position.

“You cannot prepare for two injuries in one position. It would be stupid for us to have three right-backs or five left-backs, although we have three left-backs at the moment.

“We are unlucky that all the right full-backs are injured.”

Given the injury issues Postecoglou faced last season, with both of his main centre-backs missing for a lot of the campaign, Spurs fans will have absolutely no sympathy for Slot, with the rest of Liverpool’s squad fully fit after a summer of heavy spending.

Indeed, the same is true already this season with a number of injury issues already, not least with Dejan Kulusevski and James Maddison being out until 2026.

https://x.com/SkySportsNews/status/1958558775478030526

Tottenham need to address injury crisis in midfield

Tottenham’s injury crisis last season saw them finish just one place above the relegation zone, which led to Postecoglou’s dismissal.

However, it appears that Daniel Levy has not learned his lesson. While Tottenham have more options at centre-back now, with Kevin Danso and Luka Vuskovic joining the squad, they already have a crisis in midfield.

Maddison and Kulusevski are both out with long-term injuries, leaving Spurs with no natural number 10, and this is a far greater issue than the one Slot is facing right now.

If Spurs do not address this crisis, they will face similar issues to the one which hit them at centre-back last season, and this could completely derail their campaign.

And there is absolutely no way Slot can complain given how comparatively little he has had to deal with compared to life at Spurs.

Mikey Moore has made two appearances since moving to Rangers on loan from Tottenham.

Despite being just 18 years old, Moore has become somewhat of a household name in English football, and especially in North London.

Tottenham fans saw glimpses of Moore’s quality last season under Ange Postecoglou, though their domestic failures ultimately limited how much time he had on the pitch.

Now at Rangers, first-team football is likely to come thick and fast, and the current feeling at Ibrox could serve as a benefit.

This article includes exclusive comment from former Tottenham goalkeeper Paul Robinson.

MORE SPURS STORIES

Rangers have had a wretched start to the season

Two draws in the league and a heavy defeat in the Champions League qualifiers have already cast a shadow of doubt over the future of Russell Martin at Rangers.

Given their lack of success in recent years, Ibrox is one of the most pressurised environments in football right now, and Paul Robinson thinks that Moore playing his football there will be brilliant for his development.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, he said: “Absolutely brilliant move for him and it’s a brilliant move for Rangers as well because he’s one of the Premier League’s brightest young talents.

“He’s playing at a massive football club. Regardless of where they are under a new manager. Regardless of their results so far this season and reconstruction, they’re a massive club, and there’s a massive expectation with Rangers.

“He’s got the opportunity to play European football for one of Europe’s top clubs, and I think he will thrive in that environment.”

What did Thomas Frank say about Mikey Moore?

When first given the job, Thomas Frank will have immediately been made aware of this special talent, and in quotes reported by the Standard, he emphasised how his future is at Tottenham.

“Mikey is a big talent, I’m really excited about his future here at Tottenham,” Frank said.

“I think for all players, but especially the younger players, they need to get that first-team consistent football into their bodies.”

Moore is just one of several players to have departed on loan this summer, with hopes of returning with a point to prove next season.

Tottenham are in desperate need of a new attacking midfielder before the transfer window closes.

James Maddison’s ACL injury at Spurs has forced Thomas Frank into the market this August.

Tottenham looked set to sign Eberechi Eze from Crystal Palace. However, Arsenal have now swooped in for the England international, and he now looks set to move to the Gunners.

Now, with Frank looking at potential alternatives, Spurs have received a boost in their pursuit of Harvey Elliott.

Liverpool will sanction Harvey Elliott sale amid Spurs interest

Tottenham have already been linked with Elliott this summer.

MORE SPURS STORIES

The Liverpool attacking midfielder is on the hunt for more first-team football as he looks to reach his potential.

The 22-year-old has already had a fantastic summer and won the Under 21s European Championship with England.

Now, with just days left of the transfer window, Liverpool will reluctantly sanction an Elliott sale, according to Ben Jacobs via X on 21 August.

This is a perfect boost for Spurs in a time of crisis in the transfer market. Elliott is already a top player with bundles of potential.

While RB Leipzig are also pushing for a deal, Tottenham would surely beat them to his signature, given their Champions League spot.

With so little time left in the transfer window, Elliott now has to be a priority for Frank as the Englishman would be a solid compromise after the humiliating Eze blunder.

Can Harvey Elliott match James Maddison’s output?

The question for any incoming attacking midfielder is whether they will be able to replace Maddison in the squad.

While Eze would have done this with ease, Elliott may struggle to hit these goal contributions.

While the 22-year-old’s stats overall aren’t great, per 90 minutes, he stands out according to Fbref on 21 August.

As a result, Tottenham have no excuse not to get this deal over the line, as with regular football, Elliott could easily shine.

Tottenham are preparing for their second Premier League game of the season against Manchester City on Sunday.

Tottenham opened the campaign with a 3-0 win against Burnley as Thomas Frank kicked off his reign at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in excellent fashion.

Goals from Brennan Johnson and Richarlison made the difference for Spurs, something which they will be hopeful of doing against Pep Guardiola’s men on 23 August.

This certainly represents a tough test for the Lilywhites, but after pushing PSG close before losing on penalties in the Super Cup, the N17 club have experience against top sides already this season.

With all eyes on a trip to the Etihad Stadium, Tottenham Hotspur News has highlighted everything you need to know before the clash.

MORE SPURS STORIES

Tottenham supporters to expect sunny conditions for Man City game

There has been a sudden shift in weather conditions, from the high temperatures of Spurs’ opening day win against Burnley, reaching upwards of 25 degrees.

This will once again be the case in Greater Manchester as a drop of 5 degrees is expected from matchweek to matchweek, despite recent conditions of 15 degrees in the typically rainy city.

The Met Office (21 August) has predicted sunny spells around the Etihad with temperatures in the region of 20 degrees expected for kick off at 12:30pm.

There is also little chance of rain in and around the Citizens’ ground, with a maximum 30 per cent chance of precipitation forecast for the day of the clash.

Away tickets sold out for Manchester City vs Tottenham

Spurs were handed an allocation of 3,065 for the trip to the Etihad, but there are no tickets available for supporters against Guardiola’s men.

The Lilywhites contact season ticket holders via email to allow them to apply for away tickets, so any chances of purchasing tickets will have been offered to fans directly.

Tickets are available for Cityzens Matchday and Junior Members in what is the second release for the clash against Tottenham.

Guide for away fans at Manchester City

There are a number of methods for Spurs fans to make their way to the Etihad, ready for the 12:30pm kick-off against the 10-time Premier League champions.

There are a vast number of trains travelling from the capital to Manchester, with options available from Euston to Manchester Picadilly, with the Metrolink trams being the best way to navigate to the ground in time for the match.

There is also the option of driving, although a journey by car could take upwards of four hours due to bank holiday traffic.

Parking at these park and ride sites is free, with direct links available to the Etihad on using the Metrolink network.

With that being said, Tottenham fans are urged to stay away from the immediate vicinity of the ground if they wish to attend a pub, as the nearest ones to the stadium are used by home fans only.

Description

Tottenham may ultimately benefit from Arsenal signing Eberechi Eze.

Eze looked set to join the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium outfit until Arsenal swooped in to seal an agreement this week.

Thomas Frank and Co. have been left scrambling, looking for alternatives, with just under two weeks left in the transfer window.

However, they could come out on top after a new bombshell emerged on Morgan Rogers from Hotspur Way.

Tottenham make Morgan Rogers approach

Tottenham need to make a splash after losing out on Eze; otherwise, they will be left looking inept after also missing out on Morgan Gibbs-White.

MORE SPURS STORIES

The Independent journalist Miguel Delaney claimed on 21 August that Spurs have made contact over a move for the Villans ace.

He stated that figures around the £80million mark have been mentioned amongst the Lilywhites hierarchy, but it may take an even bigger sum.

How does Tottenham target Rogers compare to Eze?

Rogers and Eze are both very talented players, and both will likely make their mark if their moves to North London are completed.

The new Spurs target is arguably the better of the two players, though, and he definitely represents better value for money.

The 22-year-old has plenty of time left at the top, whereas at 27, Eze may only have a few seasons left at his best level.

Rogers is pretty much already at the same level as Eze, as he ranks above the new Gunners star in several key metrics for wingers.

The Villa ace is above his compatriot for progressive carries, dribbles completed, and assists, while the Palace star takes the win for non-penalty goals and assists and crosses completed.

Overall, they are fairly similar, but given Rogers’ age and potential to go to another level, he is the better option.

Can Tottenham afford Morgan Rogers deal?

Well, Daniel Levy has made it clear that he is willing to spend this summer.

Spurs were able to drop £68m on Eze, but their arch rivals swooped in at the last minute to steal the deal.

Given that Rogers would likely cost around the £90-£100m mark, that is surely a sacrifice that Levy and Co would want to make to get one over on the Gunners.
