Description

Tottenham are hoping to take another step towards change after ousting Daniel Levy.

Levy remained a constant at Tottenham for almost 25 years after he was promoted in 2000.

However, Levy has since stepped down as Tottenham chairman after a tenure of highs and lows.

It is believed that Joe Lewis wants to transform Tottenham sporting-wise, and those plans do not include the now-former chairman.

But to do so, Lewis will look at reigniting a promising financial prospect that Levy was unable to get over the line.

MORE SPURS STORIES

Daniel Levy’s departure to “unlock” Tottenham naming rights deal

It was suggested that Levy’s departure from Tottenham would be a mistake given his business successes.

However, it now seems that his exit could help Spurs boost their finances tenfold.

As reported by The Telegraph on Saturday, 6 September, Levy’s Tottenham exit may also “unlock” a naming rights deal for the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Shortly after the stadium opened, Levy had hoped to secure a naming rights deal worth as much as £25million a year for 15 years. This would have earned the North London club a world record £375m.

However, the former Tottenham chairman was unable to find a company willing to match that valuation. But with Levy stepping down from his position, Spurs could accelerate plans to secure a deal.

What was Levy’s biggest failure at Tottenham?

Levy had several successes while chairman at Tottenham, including the commissioning of the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

But he was often criticised for his lacklustre approach to transfer investments. The signing of Tanguy Ndombele ranks high on his list of failures and is considered one of the worst signings in Spurs history.

While this is a disappointing feat, most in North London will not forget, Levy’s biggest failure remains not investing in Mauricio Pochettino’s Champions League final squad.

Tottenham saw no new arrivals the summer after Spurs’ 2-0 defeat to Liverpool in the 2018/19 Champions League. Consequently, the Lilywhites finished outside the top four in the Premier League at sixth place the following season.

This was a Spurs team that could have at least won a European trophy if proper investment had been made at the time. As such, for many fans of the North London club, this remains Levy’s biggest failure.

Daniel Levy has been handed another blow as Tottenham looks toward life without him at the helm.

Levy stepped down as Tottenham chairman this week as Joe Lewis looks towards enhancing Tottenham’s sporting results.

The former Spurs chairman has often been praised for his business ventures, including commissioning the new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. However, his transfer decisions sparked outrage throughout his tenure.

It was suggested that Lewis would regret dismissing Levy as Tottenham chairman, but it seems he’s looking towards bigger, brighter beginnings.

Tottenham set to welcome £100million investment

Lewis has been keen to boost finances at Tottenham in recent months, which has included a new deal with Molson Coors Beverage Company.

The North London club is determined to compete with the Premier League ‘big six’ on both a sporting and financial level. As such, Spurs are set to welcome another cash injection in the coming days.

According to The Telegraph on 6 September, over £100million is scheduled to be pumped into Tottenham. This coincides with ENIC’s desire to make sure the Lilywhites can be lucrative on all fronts.

A source close to the Lewis family has insisted that Levy’s exit was not part of plans to sell Spurs. This means the investment must be made as a means to compete with the likes of Manchester City, Liverpool and Arsenal.

This time last year, Levy raised the prospect of investment. But now he will not be around to see it with his friends, claiming he will be “heartbroken” by his departure.

How much has the Premier League ‘big six’ spent this summer?

Tottenham’s movement in the summer window and reported £100m future investment poses a sign of what’s to come concerning transfers.

The Lilywhites want to compete with the ‘big six’, who spent a generous amount of money on new recruits.

According to Sky Sports via X on 2 September, Tottenham spent £171.2m on transfers and had a net spend of £154.2m. This places them in fourth place among the ‘big six’ for transfer spending.

Furthermore, Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United all spent more, with the Gunners topping the list with £257m net spend. Meanwhile, Chelsea spent £286.5m on transfers in the summer, but made £314.3m on player sales, giving them a positive net spend of – £17.9m.

After spending around £170m in the transfer window and the reported injection of cash, it seems that Tottenham are prepared to take their sporting achievements to the next level.

Description

Rodrigo Bentancur’s contract situation has been causing plenty of concern at Tottenham in recent weeks.

The Uruguay international has become an increasingly important member of the squad in N17 over the last few seasons, but his future is now shrouded in uncertainty.

Bentancur’s contract at Tottenham is due to expire at the end of the current campaign, and there is currently no sign of him penning renewed terms with the Lilywhites.

Thomas Frank’s side have had a hugely positive summer in the transfer market, but this is one issue that they have been unable to tackle.

This article includes exclusive comments from Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham.

MORE SPURS STORIES

Tottenham ‘have to close’ Rodrigo Bentancur deal quickly

Bentancur could agree to leave Tottenham as soon as January if they do not address the impending situation regarding his contract in the near future.

The 28-year-old will be able to strike a pre-contract agreement with European clubs in the winter, and that will be a huge concern for Spurs, given that Atletico Madrid have been showing an interest.

Bentancur has already turned in several impressive performances so far this season, and his importance to the Lilywhites is clearer than ever.

Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – believes that the N17 outfit simply have to reach an agreement with their star, but money could be a potential barrier.

“We (Tottenham) want him to stay,” Wenham said.

“You can imagine the likes of Atletico Madrid and others will be fully aware of that situation, that they can sign him on a free in less than three months.

“We have to close that deal. “I’m surprised that it hasn’t happened as yet, but he’s probably holding out for his money.

“The more performances that he puts in, like he did at Man City, against PSG and in the pre-season friendlies, the more his value increases, and he probably wants a decent contract.”

Spurs need to give Rodrigo Bentancur the terms he wants

Bentancur’s situation at Tottenham is growing graver with every passing day, as concerns regarding a possible exit continue to mount.

The midfielder is now a veteran in European football, and a player of his age is unlikely to carry much value in the transfer market from now until the end of his career.

With that in mind, it is solely down to Spurs to assess how much they need him for the next few seasons.

Frank is clearly keen on him, given that he has started him in three of the four competitive games during his reign so far.

Spurs have shown this summer in the transfer market that money is of little concern to them, and with that in mind, they surely have to pay Bentancur the sum that he wants in order to keep him around.

Player sold by Daniel Levy for £12m pinpoints exactly when ousted Tottenham chairman knew time was up

Daniel Levy saw a wealth of players come and go during his 24-year tenure at Tottenham.

This summer, Son Heung-min was a high-profile departure from Spurs, while several big names arrived.

After the transfer window shut, Levy called time on his Tottenham reign, and his departure has dominated the headlines.

Now, a player that the 63-year-old sold for £12million has described exactly when the former executive chairman knew his time was up.

Andros Townsend explains when Daniel Levy knew he was gone

Tottenham have already terminated Daniel Levy’s appointment from Companies House, highlighting that they are in a rush to move on.

This summer, the Lilywhites went through an eventful transfer window, missing out on several key targets.

However, the North London club were still able to sign some well-renowned names in Mohammed Kudus, Xavi Simons, and Randal Kolo Muani.

While Levy’s exit came as a shock for some, it appears that the signs were there earlier in the summer.

Indeed, speaking on X on 5 September, as shared by Lilywhite Rose, Townsend gave his verdict on when that was.

“Reading between the lines, I think this was on the cards for a while,” he said.

“In hindsight, I look back to the interview he did with Gary Neville, which is so un-Daniel Levy-like to do an interview like that.

“And maybe it was his last chance to get the fans onside to show his human side, and to show whoever’s in charge that he can still lead Spurs.”

Tottenham supporters should have seen Daniel Levy exit coming

Looking back, everything now makes sense.

When Levy gave his interview with Neville, Townsend is right in that it was out of character for the 63-year-old.

During the conversation, he spoke about his legacy, sustainability, and even commented on other clubs’ spending.

Although Levy has never been afraid to speak his mind, doing such an interview was certainly a sign.

In a rather fitting end to his Spurs reign, he departed the North London club after the transfer window closed.

Now, only time will tell whether he will be remembered fondly at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Timo Werner to thank as ‘unbelievable’ player chooses Tottenham over Chelsea

Timo Werner endured a rather forgettable spell at Tottenham, but he has paid them back with a player.

Werner was linked with a move to the Premier League this summer, with Leeds United credited with interest.

However, the Germany international has remained at RB Leipzig following his year-and-a-half spell in North London.

Now, the 29-year-old has been responsible for a talent choosing a move to Spurs over Chelsea.

Timo Werner helped Xavi Simons make Tottenham decision

Werner came in for criticism during his 18-month Spurs spell, but he ended his stint with a trophy.

MORE SPURS STORIES

The German previously played for Chelsea, where he made more of an impact during his 89 appearances.

However, neither spell was deemed a success despite the promise Werner had shown before his move to England.

Despite a better record in West London, the 29-year-old influenced Simons’ decision to move to Tottenham.

“He told me a lot about the club’s greatness and the fantastic fans,” Simons said via The Standard on 5 September.

“And he said he thought it was the right place for me to learn and improve. Thanks for your trust, Timo!”

Why Xavi Simons was called ‘unbelievable’

Simons has been highly regarded within world football for some time, but his career has zigzagged.

The Netherlands international came through the ranks at PSG before making his mark for PSV Eindhoven.

Although the European champions bought him back, they then sold him to Leipzig, where he continued to thrive.

“Can we talk Champions League? Can I say watching Xavi Simons against Real Madrid, Leipzig versus Real Madrid, was kind of like a coming out parade in respects of a performance from someone,” Wright said via his podcast in 2024.

“He was brilliant. He was brilliant to watch. Unbelievable. And, we are talking about someone who is on loan from PSG to Leipzig, and he is getting the chance to play against arguably one of the greatest teams in the world, Real Madrid, and playing like that. He is 20, going there and putting in (a performance like that). He is on their radar, massively.”

On the face of it, Tottenham have completed a superb piece of business, and there is every reason to feel excited about his arrival.

However, the Premier League is a different beast, and Spurs supporters will need him to make an instant impact.

‘Ambitious’ Tottenham signing already tipped for January exit

Thomas Frank could already face January turmoil at Tottenham despite the summer window closing days ago.

There has not been a quiet day in North London since the final days of the summer transfer window.

Tottenham ended the summer with Randal Kolo Muani signing, as well as Xavi Simons, while Daniel Levy has stepped down as Tottenham chairman.

It is believed that Joe Lewis is keen on focusing on boosting Tottenham’s sporting quality, which Levy has come under fire for in recent years.

But that does not seem like the end of it, as Frank already faces issues in January.

MORE SPURS STORIES

This article includes exclusive comments from Tottenham expert and Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham.

Mathys Tel could leave Tottenham in January

Tottenham triggered their buy-option for Mathys Tel to buy him for £30million from Bayern Munich this summer.

The striker impressed under Ange Postecoglou while on loan during the 2024/25 season. It is no wonder, with former Bayern Munich sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic pointing out his “great mentality.”

In quotes provided by Football.London on 30 July 2023, he said: “Mathys is very ambitious, hard-working and has a great mentality. He works even on his days off.

“We all know what kind of potential he has. Mathys has everything to become a very good player. If he continues this way, he’ll have a great future ahead of him. We will build him up bit by bit.”

However, Tel was omitted from Tottenham’s UEFA Champions League phase squad, with Wilson Odobert getting the nod over him.

As such, Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – believes he could be looking for an early exit this January transfer window on an initial loan basis.

“The other question has to be asked that with Tel and Odobert being so similar in their style of play, did we need to sign him?” Wenham said.

“I still think £30m for him, when you look at what he’s achieved so far and his relatively young age, it’s still good business, but it might be that the January window comes around, and if the situation hasn’t changed, he may have to go on loan and try and get a consistent run of games, because at this time, he needs to be playing.

“ I just don’t see where those opportunities without injuries are going to arise at Tottenham.”

What is next for Mathys Tel at Tottenham?

Frank has made it no secret that he is more of a fan of what Odobert can bring to the table as opposed to Tel.

Odobert shone for Frank during pre-season, while Tel’s most memorable moment was missing a penalty in Tottenham’s shootout against PSG in the UEFA Super Cup final.

As such, the only thing left for Tel to do is continue to put in the work in North London. With Richarlison, Dominic Solanke, and now Kolo Muani all competing for that centre-forward spot, Tel having consistent minutes with the senior team seems almost helpless.

But with several competitions to play in and potentially more than 50 games up for grabs, there will be ample opportunities for rotation. As such, Tel needs to put his best foot forward during the minutes he does receive.

Daniel Levy did not always get it right as Tottenham chairman, but when he did it was always cause for celebration.

Spurs ended deadline day on a high, prior to Levy stepping down as chairman, with Manor Solomon securing an unexpected loan to Villarreal from Tottenham.

Meanwhile, Randal Kolo Muani arrived at Tottenham on loan from PSG for the season. The North London club were believed to have made a last-ditch effort to sign Malick Fofana from Lyon, but Tottenham were stopped in their tracks by the Ligue 1 side.

Either way, business has been booming in North London for more reasons than one.

Tottenham praised for Xavi Simons transfer

Tottenham signed Xavi Simons from RB Leipzig for £51.8million in the final days of the summer transfer window.

He has been dubbed by most Spurs supporters as the North London club’s first superstar signing in a while.

In quotes provided via SoccerODD on 24 September 2024, his former teammate, David Raum, commented on the Dutchman’s ambitions.

After a win over FC Augsburg, he said: “Xavi has his own ambitions—he wants to lead the charge and score goals.

“We, as a team, need to help him get into his game. That worked well today. He really deserved it. Let’s hope this gives him extra motivation. He is a key player for us, so we need to take good care of him.”

He follows Mohammed Kudus, who Tottenham signed from West Ham for £55m earlier in the window.

A total of £106.8 million for both Kudus and Simons is not too shabby. In fact, Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – believes this is excellent business for Spurs.

“I talked about the great value of Kudus for £55m,” Wenham said.

“Saying that Simons is £51m, I mean, that just seems like a great bit of business when you see some of the fees involved with other players this summer. So it’s a huge credit to Tottenham for seemingly getting this deal the line.

“Only six months ago that he was being linked to some of the biggest clubs in world football. So Tottenham bided their time, they’ve got the player and they’ve got him at a great price.”

How much have Tottenham spent this summer?

In addition to Simons and Kudus, Tottenham signed Mathys Tel and Kevin Danso for £30m and £21m respectively, earlier in the window.

Luka Vuskovic arrived from Hajduk Split for around £12m after Spurs initially signed him two years ago, while Kota Takai transferred from Kawasaki Frontale for £5m.

Meanwhile, Joao Palhinha arrived from Bayern Munich on loan, but not before the Lilywhites agreed to a £4.3m fee.

All in all, just under £180m of spending this summer for several players who can earn a spot in Thomas Frank’s starting 11 seems to be excellent business from the North London club.

Daniel Levy may have only just left Tottenham, but there has been significant talk about the North London club’s future.

Former Spurs manager Harry Redknapp has praised Levy for his impact, while others are pleased he has gone.

Now that he has vacated his post, some believe that Levy’s decision will trigger a takeover at Tottenham.

Indeed, Simon Jordan believes that the events that have transpired at Man City and Chelsea suggest that a sale is on the cards.

Tottenham could follow in Chelsea and Man City’s footsteps

Levy’s exit from Tottenham means that a takeover is seemingly more likely, especially if he was resistant to the idea.

MORE SPURS STORIES

The 63-year-old was a divisive figure during his time in North London, with supporters holding regular protests against the perceived lack of investment.

This summer, the Lilywhites did complete some expensive deals, with Mohammed Kudus and Xavi Simons arriving for over a combined £100million.

However, their spending has been nowhere near the scale of City and Chelsea, who have spent substantially over the years.

Indeed, Jordan believes that what has happened at those two clubs means that Tottenham are for sale.

“If you look at Man City and you look at Chelsea, they’ve spent money like drunken sailors to achieve things, and success has created inherent value for the football club,” he said on talkSPORT on 5 September.

“And I don’t mean just on the field, I mean for the owners who will ultimately look to sell this football club at the best price, so I think it’s no secret that Tottenham is for sale.

“It’s no secret because the Lewis family probably wants to extract maximum value.”

Could Spurs follow in footsteps of Premier League big spenders?

If a takeover does occur at Tottenham, then they will be in a strong position to spend substantially.

Many will reference Newcastle United and their inability to spend as much as they want, but that comes down to revenue.

Spurs generate the ninth-highest revenue in European football at just over £533million, according to the Deloitte Football Money League.

Indeed, the North London club generates approximately £210.4m more than Newcastle, who sit 15th on the list.

Crucially, the Lilywhites are ranked above Chelsea, so if you were to compare the two, then it would suggest that Tottenham would be able to spend more than their rivals.

Of course, the sale of Son Heung-min to LAFC will affect finances, but the cost of that may not be known for some time.

For now, Spurs are in a period of transition, but all eyes will be on what happens now that Levy is gone.

Tottenham could be in for another major change as the Lilywhites’ future continues to look uncertain.

There has been little time to come up for air as Spurs push through one of their most hectic periods in the last 20 years.

Daniel Levy stepped down as Tottenham chairman after almost 25 years at the helm. The news has produced mixed reactions from the footballing world, with Tottenham fans glad of Levy’s departure while Arsenal supporters are bitter.

It has been suggested that Levy’s exit could cause financial hardship at Tottenham. While he was rarely praised for his sporting decisions, his business affairs at the North London club were excellent.

But the former Spurs chairman’s leaving his role may have opened up new possibilities for the Lilywhites.

MORE SPURS STORIES

This article includes exclusive comments from Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham.

Peter Charrington’s appointment could spark a Tottenham takeover

Tottenham named Peter Charrington as their new non-executive chairman after the departure of Levy.

Charrington is the former CEO of Citi Private Bank and currently works as a director at ENIC. It would not be too ambitious to imagine that Charrington’s financial background could be an advantage or his new position.

In turn, this could see Spurs make smarter decisions in the transfer window. However, Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – believes his background suggests a sale could be on the cards.

“Massive change at the club,” Wenham said.

“Does that mean that a sale of the club is now up and coming? We look at Peter Charrington’s record and history working as an ex-banker involved in multiple mergers and acquisitions of companies over the years, and you do wonder if he’s now been brought in with that in mind. A sale by the Lewis family from America.

“I know his daughter, Vivian, has become increasingly in attendance at Tottenham’s home games. So you do wonder if that younger generation of the family now wants to push on and sell the club.”

Would new owners benefit Tottenham?

Joe Lewis seems to be committed to taking Tottenham into a new direction. This is clear from the Lilywhites’ movements in the recent summer market.

The last-minute transfer of Randal Kolo Muani to Tottenham and Xavi Simons seems like calls that Levy would have struggled to make. This suggests that the Lewis family had taken a more active role in the club before Levy’s departure was announced.

As such, a net spend of around £150m seems to have caution out the wind, which was a key principle Spurs abided by under Levy.

Thus, the Lewis family seems committed to bringing in top talent at Tottenham, which means that a takeover at the moment seems less beneficial.
