Harry Redknapp has outlined a baffling selection when discussing the managerial job at Tottenham Hotspur.

Spurs fell to a 5-2 defeat against Atletico Madrid on Tuesday, all but bringing an end to their Champions League campaign alongside their ongoing Premier League relegation fight.

Igor Tudor was brought in to replace Thomas Frank last month, but has since overseen four straight defeats at the helm.

The Croatian is facing sack threats already, and former boss Redknapp has given his thoughts on the matter. His selection, though, will be baffling for supporters.

Harry Redknapp speaks out on who should replace Igor Tudor

Redknapp took charge of Tottenham in 2008, laying the foundations for what would become an exciting period following his departure in 2012.

Speaking to talkSPORT on Thursday regarding the ongoing crisis at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, the 79-year-old outlined his selection for an interim job, should Tudor get the axe in the coming weeks.

ā€œIt’s such a short-term job for someone. Someone needs to go in there and just give the place a lift,ā€ he said.

ā€œTim Sherwood would be a good shout,ā€ Redknapp added. ā€œI think someone like Sherwood or Glenn Hoddle. I’d do it for sure.ā€

Sherwood has been out of management since 2015, following a stint at Aston Villa.

The 57-year-old took charge of Spurs in December 2013, until the end of the 2013-14 season, though his roles at the two respective clubs remain the only managerial positions of his career.

Sherwood, like Redknapp, knows and cares for the club, but the ongoing situation in North London is not just due to who is in the dugout.

If one of the aforementioned characters were to be put in place, nothing says that the players would respond adequately, just as they simply have not taken to Tudor over the course of the last month.

Past examples highlight Tottenham’s shortcomings

Tudor is simply the latest on a fast-moving managerial conveyor belt at Tottenham. And while he does not go without blame for his four matches in charge, the issues are much higher than the dugout.

Since the departure of Mauricio Pochettino in 2019, top-class managers have been and gone.

Antonio Conte delivered his passionate rants, while the great Jose Mourinho was unable to get the club firing on all cylinders.

Nuno Espirito Santo, Ange Postecoglou and Thomas Frank followed, and failed – relatively speaking in Ange’s case – despite having success elsewhere.

This has led to the current situation, with the Lilywhites battling for their survival – something that would have been inconceivable when Mourinho replaced the popular Pochettino six and a half years ago.

The current squad is an amalgamation of different coaches ideas, all of whom deploy drastically different styles of play, while the mentality issues continue to be highlighted among the on-pitch personnel.

Should Tottenham survive this season, the club is in desperate need of a complete reset, from top to bottom, or the risk is there of this current crisis becoming the norm.

Wayne Rooney spot on about Tottenham 'disgrace', Micky van de Ven needs to take a look at himself - tottenhamhotspurnews.com
Description

Wayne Rooney has branded Tottenham Hotspurā€˜s players a ā€œdisgraceā€ amid their poor form – and sought-after centre-back Micky van de Ven hasn’t covered himself in glory either.

The Netherlands international is known for his eye-catching attacking runs, his top-end speed, and raw athleticism. But the centre-back has been found wanting in 2026, especially.

Both he and centre-back partner Cristian Romero were key to Tottenham’s Europa League trophy win last season but they are, arguably, equally culpable for their current malaise.

Romero has just served a four-match ban for his second red card of the season – hardly a captain leading by example.

And Van de Ven, who has been linked with Real Madrid and Liverpool, received a petulant red card in the 3-1 loss to Crystal Palace and was at fault for one of the goals in Tottenham’s 5-2 loss to Atletico Madrid.

Wayne Rooney calls out Tottenham’s lack of desire

Following their Atletico setback, Tottenham have now lost six consecutive matches in all competitions for the first time in the north London team’s 144-year history.

And off the back of the 3-1 loss to Palace, Tottenham’s winless run stretched to 11 Premier League matches – a first for them in the competition’s history.

Overall this season, Van de Ven has won 55 per cent of his aerial duels and 57 per cent of his ground duels – bread and butter for any centre-back.

Against Atletico, Van de Ven got a Sofascore rating of 5.6 as he made one error that led to a goal, his long ball accuracy was down at 33 per cent, and he was lucky to escape a red card for a foul on David Hancko.

In the loss to Palace, where he was sent off for a last-man foul on Ismaila Sarr, his rating was a little higher at 5.4.

In addition to committing two fouls, he did win his one aerial duel and three out of five ground duels, as this Sofascore graphic partly shows below.

But the fact that his attitude has come into question, amid transfer interest away from Tottenham, and he has made some costly errors of late, Rooney’s ire could have easily been directed at Van de Ven.

When Gary Neville said this is getting ā€œimpossible to watchā€ at Tottenham, Rooney interjected on the Stick to Football podcast: ā€œYeah, but [the Tottenham] players need to look at themselves because I think they’ve been an absolute disgrace.

ā€œThe performances, the attitude, the lack of desire and fight, lack of anything in them…I was watching the Palace game, and I really felt sorry for Tottenham fans. They’re sat there…they’re not even angry anymore. Just disappointed.ā€

Van de Ven said he is not touching his phone anymore, other than to see his family. But if Tottenham go down, he and many of his Spurs teammates, will be on their phones quickly to seek a way out of the north London team.

How much is Igor Tudor to blame for Tottenham’s troubles?

Igor Tudor replaced Thomas Frank at Tottenham until the end of the season last month but so far he has lost all four of his games in charge.

They include Tottenham’s demoralising defeats to Atletico Madrid, Arsenal, Fulham and Palace, and now they are just one point above the relegation zone with nine games to go.

The last time they won in the Premier League was way back on 28 December in a 1-0 win at Palace. Right now, Tottenham don’t look like getting a point, let alone a win.

So many mistakes have been made before Tudor walked in the building. From Spurs’ January recruitment, to the owners’ running of the club, to the attitude of their players.

This was a very difficult job but so far, Tudor hasn’t looked up to the task. He doesn’t appear to have the players’ respect, many fans want him out already, and the performances have been dire.

But the players need to take some responsibility as well. They finished 17th in the table last season and although they won the Europa League, they have to do more in the final stretch of the season. If not, relegation beckons.

Gareth Bale’s Tottenham warning highlights muddled thinking over Souza transfer

Gareth Bale’s Tottenham warning highlights muddled thinking over Souza transfer - tottenhamhotspurnews.com
Description

Gareth Bale’s Tottenham Hotspur warning has highlighted the muddled thinking over Souza’s January signing.

Like many rising Brazilian stars, Souza took the chance to head to the Premier League, with Tottenham agreeing a £13million deal with Santos for the 19-year-old at the start of the year.

The left-back has pedigree but as has been the case with some of Tottenham’s other young talent, such as Archie Gray, they are not coming into a stable environment, as Spurs desperately try and stave off relegation to the Championship.

So far, the teenager has played three times for Tottenham: one of which came under former boss Thomas Frank, and the other two have been with current interim manager Igor Tudor.

When the January window was open, Tottenham had the chance to strengthen further but settled with Souza and midfielder Conor Gallagher. This may have been another wrong turn from Spurs as they bid to save their season.

Souza faces difficult task at Tottenham – the numbers show why

So far, Souza has chalked up 88 minutes for Tottenham, all of which have been in the Premier League.

His sole start came in Tottenham’s 3-1 loss to Crystal Palace in the league on 5 March, with the youngster making way in the 43rd minute after Micky van de Ven’s red card.

He has a pass accuracy of just under 92 per cent, has created three chances, and has had 40 touches.

Souza has had four touches in the opposition’s box, has been dribbled past twice, has made a combined three recoveries and interceptions, and has made two clearances.

As this Sofascore graphic below shows, this is a very small sample size and not too much should be drawn from his Spurs start.

But the fact that Tottenham signed him at all, when they needed to bring in first-team quality to lift them clear of a relegation fight, speaks volumes about the club’s questionable decision-making.

Indeed, former Tottenham winger Gareth Bale said that some of the club’s struggles include not paying top wages to attract the best players and sticking to signing youngsters rather than players for the here and now.

He said on Stick to Football: ā€œ[Tottenham] don’t pay as much as [Manchester] United etc… look at the wage bill, it’s lower and I think there’s a reason for that, you can attract good players.

ā€œThey always seem to buy young and hope they can grow into something big, which has worked in the past for example with me and a few other players, but they’re an established club now.

ā€œThey have the stadium, they have the training ground and they have the fanbase, it’s like now they need to be buying bigger players and maybe paying a bit more.

ā€œThere’s that bit of a gamble that you need to take that from a business point of view they’re not willing to do, I obviously don’t know how they’re doing financially but it seems to be that for me, the biggest issue, that they don’t sign the proven player.ā€

Igor Tudor has to leave Tottenham

Tudor replaced Frank at Tottenham last month but so far, the Croatian has lost all four of his matches in charge.

Following Tottenham’s 5-2 drubbing at the hands of Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday, Spurs suffered their sixth consecutive loss in all competitions for the first time in the club’s 144-year history.

Tudor drew criticism for how he handled goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky, with the 22-year-old being hooked after 17 minutes due to being at fault for two of Atletico’s early goals.

The 47-year-old appears to be an unpopular figure among the Tottenham players, the fans are already calling for his dismissal, and the board are also reportedly considering sacking him already.

Spurs looked scattered, divided and leaderless – and some of that comes from Tudor – with many players blaming each other for their own collective inadequacies.

The North London team haven’t won in the league since 28 December and are just one point above the relegation zone. This side won the Europa League last season, although they did finish 17th with 38 points.

They are currently nine points off that total with nine games to go. There is still time to turn it around but with Tudor at the wheel, that seems unlikely.

Description

Tottenham Hotspur forward Randal Kolo Muani could get his season back on track against Atletico Madrid on Tuesday.

Kolo Muani has struggled to perform at Tottenham after joining on loan from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer.

However, with three goals in the Champions League so far, the 27-year-old has shown huge amounts of promise in N17, and he seems to thrive on the biggest stage for Spurs.

Despite some underwhelming performances in recent games, the Frenchman could now match a Tottenham Champions League record that is currently held by Gareth Bale and Peter Crouch.

And if Tottenham do beat Atletico Madrid, then Kolo Muani could play a huge part in the win.

Randal Kolo Muani has been excellent in the Champions League for Tottenham

The last-16 tie between Tottenham and Atletico Madrid is a tough one to call, but the Spaniards probably hold the edge over Spurs.

However, Igor Tudor’s side will fancy their chances, with the second leg being played at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

According to Sofascore, Kolo Muani has completed 63.5 per cent of his attempted dribbles, and he’ll be desperate to record another successful performance in Europe’s elite competition on Tuesday.

Kolo Muani has been directly involved in five goals in seven games for Tottenham in the UEFA Champions League this season, already his most in a single edition.

Indeed, only two players have netted more than three goals in their first Champions League campaign as a Spurs player: Bale and Crouch, who both scored four in 2010-11.

While Atletico Madrid’s defence will be tough to break down, Kolo Muani has already shone against PSG this season, and it’s very plausible that he could find himself on the scoresheet against the Spanish giants.

Having worked with Tudor at Juventus, he is accustomed to the style of play, and he finally scored his first Premier League goal in the 4-1 loss to Arsenal.

Does Kolo Muani still have it takes to be a success at Tottenham?

The imposing forward has scored nine goals in 31 caps for his country, and he’s desperate to appear in successive World Cup tournaments for Les Bleus.

Currently, his form for Spurs isn’t good enough to be in Didier Deschamps’ squad, unless there is a drastic change.

His pass accuracy of 70 per cent and his duel win success rate of 33 per cent in the Premier League show that he needs to step up his game in multiple areas.

Kolo Muani has an abundance of talent, and although there are plenty of doubts, he could relish the opportunity of scoring the goals that will keep Tottenham in the Premier League.

And given his form in Europe, it would be hard to argue against that in the final few months of the season.

Robbie Keane is the new favourite for the Crystal Palace job, despite being linked with Tottenham Hotspur.

Keane had been mooted for a return to North London when Thomas Frank was sacked, with the Irishman tipped to become Spurs manager on a short-term basis.

Instead, Igor Tudor was the man picked for the role, and with the Croatian still winless, pressure is already starting to pile on him, with a defeat to Liverpool next weekend potentially enough to see him out the door.

However, the chances of Keane replacing him now seem low, with the former Tottenham striker now 6/4 to become the next Palace manager, ahead of the likes of Frank and Dyche.

Tottenham may be looking for a new manager by the end of March, with relegation from the Premier League looming.

How has Robbie Keane fared in management?

Keane’s most recent managerial job has been with Ferencvaros, which is where he remains today.

The 45-year-old has impressed in Hungary, having averaged 2.04 points per game across all competitions, including 1.80 in the Europa League.

His last job was with Maccabi Tel Aviv, where he also averaged an impressive 2.32 points per game throughout the 53 games he had in charge of them.

Keane’s attacking style of play is what has gained him the most interest, with 160 goals scored by Ferencvaros in the 70 games he has been in charge of.

Tottenham would likely welcome Keane back to North London, but given the state they are in, it feels unlikely that he would want to make the move.

Who is favourite for Tottenham job?

Tudor will do well to last the season in North London, with several names already mooted to replace him.

They include Dyche, Thiago Motta and Keane himself, but Mauricio Pochettino remains the favourite with odds of 4/1.

However, with the Argentine due to lead USMNT out at the World Cup, it’s likely to be an appointment for the summer, which may be too late for Tottenham given the immediate risk of relegation.

Other names, such as Ryan Mason and Roberto De Zerbi, are also in the running for the job at Tottenham.

Tottenham Hotspur star James Maddison has sent a message of support to Jack Grealish amid his injury recovery.

Like Grealish, Maddison has had a season disrupted by injury, with the attacking midfielder suffering an anterior cruciate ligament problem last summer.

The England international is unlikely to feature again this term, a fate shared by Everton loanee Grealish, who had surgery on a foot stress fracture in early February.

Despite this setback, which likely ends his chances of playing at this summer’s World Cup with England in North America, Grealish appears to be staying positive.

While he has vowed to come back ā€œstronger than everā€, the well-wishers, including Tottenham’s injured Maddison, have come out in force to give him a little bit of extra support.

Jack Grealish and James Maddison making progress

On Sunday, Grealish posted numerous pictures on Instagram detailing his injury recovery over the past four weeks.

The photos show how the 30-year-old had to have his foot tightly wrapped in the wake of his surgery, and he has also been forced to wear a moon boot.

At times, the Manchester City loanee has had to keep his severely strapped foot elevated to aid his recovery, while also using a knee scooter to get around.

When the post dropped on Sunday night, Maddison was quick to praise his compatriot, with the 29-year-old posting three clapping emojis.

He was joined by the likes of City’s Nathan Ake, Oleksandr Zinchenko and a raft of Everton fans, many of whom hope the winger signs for them permanently in the summer.

Incidentally, in late January, Maddison posted photos of his own recovery, with the attacking midfielder writing that he was another day closer while completing individual training.

As Tottenham try and stay in the Premier League this season, they could really do with a player of Maddison’s quality. Whether that happens remains to be seen.

Tottenham face worrying realisation in relegation fight

Tottenham sit 16th in the Premier League table, just one point above the relegation zone with nine matches to play.

Spurs are the current Europa League holders and have a Champions League last-16 double header against Atletico Madrid to look forward to, and yet, they could still get relegated.

One thing that is not helping their cause is Maddison and Tottenham teammate Dejan Kulusevski’s injuries, with the pair not playing a single minute this season.

Winger Wilson Odobert is also out for the season with a knee injury, and fellow wideman Mohammed Kudus is unavailable until April at the earliest.

Midfielders Lucas Bergvall and Rodrigo Bentancur are out until April and May, respectively, while Ben Davies could return next month.

However, Igor Tudor’s side need results now and by the time the aforementioned players return, it could be too late in their relegation battle.

Spurs haven’t won in the league since 28 December, so they need a minor miracle to get out of this wretched situation.

Description

Xavi Simons could return to the starting line-up for Tottenham Hotspurā€˜s Champions League round-of-16 visit to Atletico Madrid on Tuesday.

Although Tottenham’s Premier League form has been frankly abysmal, their exploits in Europe have been fairly impressive.

Spurs finished fourth in the league phase, and it was their results in the Champions League that kept Thomas Frank in a job for so long.

With Igor Tudor now at the helm, he goes into the first leg having lost all three of his games in charge, and fans are becoming incredibly doubtful of his abilities as a head coach.

When Tottenham meet Atletico Madrid at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano, Tudor might make four changes to the team that lost 3-1 to Crystal Palace last Thursday, with Simons being the biggest beneficiary.

Xavi Simons replaces Mathys Tel in four changes

Simons has endured a slow start to life in N17, and it’s clear that he hasn’t adapted to the physical nature of the Premier League.

However, the 22-year-old attacking midfielder has an abundance of potential, and he can definitely grow into a top-class player for Spurs.

According to Sofascore, he has a pass accuracy of 82.4 per cent in the top flight, and his creativity has definitely been missed when he hasn’t started under Tudor.

Therefore, with Spurs in need of some individual brilliance, Simons could come in for Mathys Tel, who hasn’t gotten going this season.

Cristian Romero will also come back into the side after his latest suspension, which means the whole of the defence will have to reshuffle.

Pedro Porro could move up to right wing-back, with the versatile Archie Gray playing on the opposite side to replace Souza in the team.

Joao Palhinha and Pape Matar Sarr were woeful against Crystal Palace, and as a result, both Conor Gallagher and Yves Bissouma could be named in the side.

Tudor has come under a lot of criticism for playing players out of position, but that unfortunately looks set to continue with Gray.

Can Archie Gray flourish as a left wing-back?

Tudor can definitely get more out of Gray by using him in midfield, but the teenager has a knack for delivering brilliant performances.

The 19-year-old was absolutely phenomenal against Crystal Palace, and he was the only player who was allowed to leave the pitch with his head held high.

He played as a right wing-back, drifting inside to utilise his skills as a midfielder, and set up Dominic Solanke’s opening goal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Realistically, Gray isn’t accustomed to playing on the other flank, but given the fact that he’s right-footed, he might be able to find his teammates in the middle with ease.

At this point, there’s no doubting his ability, and it wouldn’t be a shock for him to produce a brilliant performance at a hostile ground.

Tudor’s future at Tottenham has been the subject of much debate, and he could be handed his marching orders if results get worse.

Tudor sack called for amid latest Tottenham shambles

Wenham believes that the evidence so far suggests that Tudor will take Spurs down, and he needs to be dismissed from the post.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, he said: ā€œThe honest reality is, Tudor has had two home games, he’s overseen a 4-1 defeat to our biggest rivals, that can happen.

ā€œHe’s then lost 3-1 at home to Palace, also, we were horrendous at Fulham for large parts of the game and lost, there’s been no new manager bounce whatsoever.

ā€œAs I said at the time Tudor was appointed, it was a risk to get somebody who has zero Premier League experience, both in terms of management and also as a player, and so far, you can’t deny that it has backfired awfully.

ā€œWe’re desperate for points, and he’s failed with that so far, I’m not surprised he’s under scrutiny and very big scrutiny at that.

ā€œThis sounds a bit knee-jerk reaction, I think he needs to go, I don’t think he’s the man that’s going to lead us out of this relegation battle, we needed a new manager bounce, and he isn’t doing that.

ā€œWe’re not performing any better, possibly worse, than we were under Thomas Frank, he’s only got 12 games, remember, and three of them have been an absolute disaster.

ā€œOn that basis, I would be up for removing him from the role.ā€

How long can Tudor stay as Tottenham boss?

Tudor cannot surely hang on for much longer if results do not improve, as that would see the club relegated to the Championship.

He probably needs a result from the Liverpool clash on 15 March at the very least to save his job, if speculation is to be believed.

Otherwise, he may well be one of the shortest managerial reigns in Premier League history, with the potential for just four league games managed.

Guglielmo Vicario has already chosen his next club

According to Tuttosport, the 29-year-old wants to return to Serie A as soon as possible.

Vicario, of course, had spent his entire senior career in his homeland before completing his switch to Tottenham from Empoli in June 2023.

Off-field matters at Spurs have only worsened his mood, while he is currently enduring a ā€˜less than idyllic relationship’ with Tudor, according to the same outlet.

The report adds that Vicario wants to join Juventus, ironically, Tudor’s most recent club, at the end of the season, and Tottenham should make it happen.

Frustration was written all over Tudor’s face after Tottenham keeper Vicario bizarrely blasted a free-kick straight out of play during the loss to Fulham, so he certainly won’t protest the transfer.

Spurs would likely be able to land a fee in the region of £17million, effectively allowing them to break even, and this is an opportunity they must grasp with both hands.

Who could replace Vicario at Tottenham?

Tottenham need a reliable, steady pair of hands should Vicario leave, as is now expected.

The ideal candidate would be Manchester City’s James Trafford, who initially arrived as Pep Guardiola’s number one before being usurped by Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Trafford has made no secret of his dissatisfaction with the situation, and Spurs should move quickly during the summer to at least test the waters.

They may also weigh up a swoop for Crystal Palace and England’s Dean Henderson, who is continuing to impress at Selhurst Park after being given the captain’s armband.

Of course, Antonin Kinsky is currently Vicario’s deputy, and it is only fair that he is given ample chances to prove himself, especially during pre-season.

Tottenham Hotspur are hoping that the Champions League can be a welcome distraction from their dismal Premier League campaign.

Tottenham are winless in their last 11 Premier League games, and their 3-1 defeat at home to Crystal Palace on Thursday made it five-straight losses on the bounce in the top flight.

As such, many Lilywhites supporters are already calling for Igor Tudor to be replaced just three games into his interim head coach role, as his side are now just one point above the relegation zone.

Tottenham have poor 21st-century record against Spanish teams

It goes without saying, but Spurs face an incredibly difficult challenge if they wish to overcome Atletico over two legs.

Tottenham beat Frankfurt to seal a top eight finish in the league phase of the Champions League, with five wins, two draws and one defeat in that section of the competition.

As such, there are some clear parallels to last season under Ange Postecoglou, as despite his team’s struggles in the Premier League, they were of course able to lift the Europa League trophy.

Tudor will be hoping he can write a similar story in N17 this season, but if the recent history books are anything to go by, then he and his side are going to need somewhat of a miracle against Madrid.

That’s because in the 10 games Spurs have contested with Spanish opposition since the 2000-01 season, in all competitions, the Lilywhites have won just twice.

Four of those have came against Real Madrid, where Spurs have won once, drawn one and lost twice, while Villarreal are the only other side they’ve beaten from their one meeting.

Barcelona and Sevilla have both played Tottenham twice, with Spurs winning none of those games, while Getafe have also been on the agenda, in which they beat Tottenham 2-1 in a UEFA Cup (Europa League) group game in 2007-08.

What kind of form are Atletico Madrid in ahead of Tottenham?

Sitting third in LaLiga, both 13 points behind leaders Barcelona and 11 clear of Real Betis in fifth, Atletico’s main priority between now and the end of the season will surely be their Champions League campaign.

Diego Simeone’s side are in good form coming into the Tottenham game too, having won four of their last five in all competitions.

Typical of a Simeone team, Atletico are very strong defensively, conceding just 25 times in LaLiga this season, with Barcelona conceding 26 for context.

So, both clubs’ recent form and Spurs’ record against Spanish clubs in recent times all point towards an Atletico two-legged triumph, which in some ways, could play into Tottenham’s hands.
