Description

Newcastle United go in search of three consecutive Premier League wins on Tuesday night against Tottenham Hotspur.

Following Newcastle United’s win over Everton on Saturday night, they have the luxury of a double-header at St James’ Park.

The Magpies face Burnley on Saturday, but first up is Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday. Eddie Howe has already beaten Thomas Frank in the Carabao Cup this season, and will hope to repeat that achievement in the Premier League.

Howe is likely to rotate his side yet again, and this is Geordie Boot Boys’ predicted Newcastle United XI to face Spurs.

The last time Tottenham came to St James’ Park…

Remember how annoyed they were about the Djed Spence incident? Some say he’s still tying his boots🤣

No changes at the back for Newcastle United

Changes are expected, but not in goal or defence.

Eddie Howe’s injury update on Nick Pope suggests that Aaron Ramsdale will start again, just days after he impressed at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

There are unlikely to be any changes in defence either, although Howe will be wary of not overplaying Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall given their importance and the Magpies’ lack of alternatives.

Sven Botman remains injured, while Fabian Schar will be an option on the bench.

MORE NEWCASTLE STORIES

Sandro Tonali returns against Spurs

Not only did Newcastle beat Everton on Saturday, but they did it without Sandro Tonali. He did not feature until the 90th minute, but should be back in the starting XI to face Spurs.

That could be bad news for Lewis Miley, who had replaced Tonali versus the Toffees. Miley played very well, but it might not be enough to keep him in the starting XI.

Lewis Miley should start again vs Spurs, agree or disagree?

This game feels more suited to the trio of Bruno Guimaraes, Tonali and Joelinton, which would result in the 19-year-old dropping to the bench.

Jacob Ramsey and Joe Willock are also pushing to start, but feel more likely to feature from the bench.

Harsh Anthony Elanga decision made

Anthony Elanga deserves a lot of praise for his performance at the weekend. It was arguably his best since arriving from Nottingham Forest for £55million.

But will it be enough to warrant a run in the starting XI? Possibly not.

Kind words from Howe on Elanga, but does he start against Spurs? I’m not sure…

He’s beginning to settle into the rhythm of life at Newcastle because it is a change for any player. I see a very level, steady performer and I think he’ll continue to get better and better.

Eddie Howe on Anthony Elanga during his pre-match press conference.

Having barely featured on Merseyside against his former club, Anthony Gordon should be back in the team to face Spurs. That could result in Elanga returning to the bench, as Harvey Barnes’ form in recent weeks should keep him in the side.

Barnes and Gordon will flank Nick Woltemade, who has already scored against Tottenham Hotspur once this season. That was in the 2-0 victory at St James’ Park back in October.

Predicted XI vs Spurs: Ramsdale; Livramento, Thiaw, Burn, Hall; Bruno, Tonali, Joelinton; Gordon, Woltemade, Barnes.

Description

Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur go head-to-head on Tuesday night with both sides hoping to keep their Champions League hopes alive.

For Newcastle, this is a chance to record a third straight Premier League win and build on that massive victory over Everton at the weekend.

What’s your favourite Toon win over Spurs? We’ll start!

Spurs, meanwhile, will be looking to bounce back from a dismal run of results. While Thomas Frank is under pressure and history is against them, Eddie Howe has still been wary of Tottenham’s ability.

Hopefully, the result comes down to which team plays the best, and not technology or human error. With that in mind, here’s a look at the refereeing team for the game.

Who is the referee for Newcastle vs Spurs?

The referee for Tuesday’s game will be Tom Bramall.

He will be helped by assistants Simon Bennett and Nick Greenhalgh. Anthony Backhouse is on fourth official duty.

Meanwhile, Paul Tierney heads up the VAR team, with Ian Hussin as his assistant.

MORE NEWCASTLE STORIES

Tom Bramall’s referee record

This season, Tom Bramall has taken charge of 11 matches, seven of which have been in the Premier League.

He has shown three red cards so far; sending off Liam Delap in Chelsea’s win over Wolves, Hugo Ekitike in Liverpool’s win over Southampton, and Toti Gomes for Wolves in their defeat to Bournemouth.

Bramall has only awarded one penalty, which came just over a week ago during the 2-2 draw between Bournemouth and West Ham.

Across 32 games in his professional career, Bramall has shown nine red cards, 108 yellows, and has a penalties-per-game ratio of 0.22. There is also an average of 20.59 fouls given during his matches.

Controversies

The biggest blot on Bramall’s copybook is definitely the fact that his decision to rule out a Morgan Rogers goal against Manchester United ultimately cost Aston Villa a place in the Champions League this season.

Ironically, that controversial error helped Newcastle land fifth place and secured their place in the top continental competition.

Hello! It’s time to talk all things Newcastle United vs Tottenham. What are some of your early predictions?

Spurs are in crisis. We’re at home. What could go wrong?! I’m going for a 2-0 home win with Nick Woltemade to score yet again…

At the time Aston Villa complained to the PGMOL, but nothing was done to reverse the mistake, naturally. Former Premier League referee Keith Hackett even said it was a “poor management decision” from the PGMOL to put Bramall on duty for that big game.

Eddie Howe has sent multiple key messages ahead of Newcastle United’s Premier League clash with Tottenham Hotspur.

The Newcastle United manager has once again addressed the press ahead of his side’s next game, as they continue their relentless run of fixtures.

It is Newcastle vs Spurs on Tuesday night, as the Magpies aim to secure a third consecutive Premier League victory.

Eddie Howe had a lot to say ahead of that game, and here are Geordie Boot Boys’ four main takeaways.

Hello! It’s time to talk all things Newcastle United vs Tottenham. What are some of your early predictions?

Spurs are in crisis. We’re at home. What could go wrong?! I’m going for a 2-0 home win with Nick Woltemade to score yet again…

Newcastle United hatch Yoane Wissa plan

Before the win over Everton, Howe confirmed that Yoane Wissa was back in training.

Now the 29-year-old has taken another giant stride towards making his Toon debut, with Howe confirming that Wissa took part in a behind closed doors game on Saturday.

“Yoane participated in an 11v11 training game while we were at Everton,” he said, as reported by the club’s official YouTube channel.

MORE NEWCASTLE STORIES

“He’ll have another one at some stage this week and we’ll see how close he is.”

There is clearly a plan in place to ensure that Wissa is fit and available as soon as possible, and hopefully it allows him to hit the ground running in black and white.

No timescale on Sven Botman’s return from injury

It remains unclear when Sven Botman will be available again following a back injury.

On Botman’s injury, Howe said: “With Sven, he’s going to see a specialist in the next couple of days to get a definitive opinion on whether he needs an injection or whether he’s able to rest for a few days and resume training.”

That is a blow for Botman, who had been enjoying an excellent season. Fortunately for Howe, he has enough options to cope during the Dutchman’s absence.

Fabian Schar partnered Malick Thiaw versus Man City, while that honour went to Dan Burn against Everton.

Expect more rotation against Tottenham Hotspur

Following the Champions League defeat to Marseille, Howe made six changes to his starting lineup.

They clearly worked, with the likes of Lewis Miley, Nick Woltemade and Anthony Elanga coming into the side and impressing.

Lewis Miley should start again vs Spurs, agree or disagree?

Expect to see more changes on Tuesday night, with Howe admitting during his pre-match press conference that he will continue to lean on his squad depth.

“We’ve said all along, especially where we are now with the schedule that we’ve got, it’s very much going to be a squad effort that gets us through this season,” he said.

“We’ve tried to manage the squad effectively in the last few games.”

Eddie Howe won’t get too high or too low after Newcastle United win

You can never accuse Howe of being too emotional. He never goes in too hard on his players after a defeat, nor does he get carried away after a victory.

That remained the case on Monday morning, with Howe giving a very mature response when asked if Newcastle United are ‘back’ after consecutive Premier League triumphs.

“I think the last two Premier League performances in particular have been us,” he said.

“I’m reluctant to say we’re back. We’ll prove whether or not we’re back. I think we’re moving in the right direction.”

Description

Anthony Elanga has endured a very tough start to his Newcastle United career.

The Swedish winger did not hit the ground running after his £55million arrival from Nottingham Forest, but Saturday suggested that the tide could be turning.

He was massively impactful in Newcastle United’s 4-1 win over Everton, with Anthony Elanga getting his first official assist for his new club. It was his pass that resulted in Nick Woltemade’s audacious lob, and that was not Elanga’s only contribution.

He won the corner that led to the Magpies’ first goal, while he was also involved in the build-up for the second. Elanga can be extremely happy with his performance against Everton, and he will suddenly feel much more confident ahead of Tuesday night’s clash with Tottenham Hotspur.

Eddie Howe tips Anthony Elanga to get better and better for Newcastle United

That confidence will only have grown after what Eddie Howe said about the 23-year-old ahead of Tuesday night’s game against Tottenham Hotspur.

The Newcastle United manager was asked about Elanga during his pre-match press conference, with Howe admitting that the attacker is only going to keep improving as he continues to settle into life up north.

“The first transition of the game right from kick-off [against Everton] is him running the length of the pitch onto a pass from Nick and almost scoring,” he said via the club’s official website.

MORE NEWCASTLE STORIES

“That set the tone for us and he can be very pleased with his contribution [on Saturday].

“He’s beginning to settle into the rhythm of life at Newcastle because it is a change for any player. I see a very level, steady performer and I think he’ll continue to get better and better.”

Eddie Howe must give Anthony Elanga the chance to capitalise on confidence

Elanga was a surprise inclusion in the Newcastle United starting XI on Saturday night.

He certainly seized his opportunity, and now he must be rewarded with another start against Spurs.

Elanga is clearly a confidence player, and he should suddenly feel more confident than ever since joining Newcastle United. Howe must capitalise on that and keep him in his side on Tuesday.

Starting the Swede again will send him a strong message, and should only encourage him to continue performing at a high level. In turn, that will give him a chance to prove Howe right in saying he is going to keep getting better.

However, the problem for Elanga is that Howe also has Anthony Gordon and Jacob Murphy pushing to start. With Newcastle needing to keep things fresh amid their gruelling run of fixtures, there remains a chance that Elanga could drop back to the bench despite his Everton heroics.

Newcastle United have a great chance to make it three Premier League wins on the spin against Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday night.

After two very different away days, Eddie Howe’s side are back at St James’ Park. Following the disappointment of Marseille, Newcastle United beat Everton to get their first Premier League away win of the season.

It will hopefully prove to be a defining moment in the Magpies’ season, as they aim to continue their good form against Tottenham Hotspur.

Newcastle United have already beaten Spurs in the Carabao Cup this season, while Thomas Frank’s side are going through a difficult period. They are without a win in their last four Premier League games, and Paul Merson thinks that will extend to five on Tuesday.

Will Eddie Howe make it five wins in a row against Spurs at home?!

Paul Merson backs Newcastle United to beat Spurs

As part of his column for Sportskeeda, Paul Merson has given his verdict on what the score will be when Newcastle face Spurs at St James’ Park.

The former Arsenal forward has predicted a Toon victory, with Nick Woltemade backed to get on the scoresheet yet again after his glorious lob against Everton.

“Tottenham are under severe pressure now,” he said.

MORE NEWCASTLE STORIES

“Even though both Newcastle and Tottenham are on the same number of points, their trajectory is the exact opposite. Newcastle are on the rise by winning their last two, while Spurs have now lost twice in a row!”

Merson added: “Nick Woltemade has been amazing for Newcastle. I’ve waxed lyrical about him all season. He scores all sorts of goals, lovely little lob over the goalkeeper against Everton, we don’t see that a lot in modern football these days. I’d be surprised if he doesn’t score in this game!

“Tottenham take one step forward and then go three steps back. Frank is under serious pressure after his comments too. I expect Newcastle to win this game. So basically, it will be a cup final for Frank when Spurs face his former club Brentford on Saturday.”

Merson’s prediction: Newcastle United 3 Tottenham Hotspur 1.

The last time Newcastle United lost to Spurs at home

You have to go back to November 2021 for the last time Newcastle United lost to Tottenham Hotspur at St James’ Park.

It is an iconic game despite the result, as it was the first following the PIF takeover. The atmosphere inside St James’ Park was initially electric, with Wor Flags returning and the new owners being welcomed to Tyneside like heroes.

Who was at St James’ Park on this day? Amazing atmosphere, terrible result!

It was the first game after the PIF takeover, as Amanda Staveley and co were welcomed to Tyneside!

However, the performance on the pitch did not match the atmosphere in the stands. Despite taking an early lead through Callum Wilson, Steve Bruce’s side would lose 3-2.

It proved to be his last as Newcastle United manager, with Amanda Staveley and co relieving him of his duties after the defeat.

What came next was the appointment of Eddie Howe, who has won all four of his games against Spurs at St James’ Park.

Description

You would think Eddie Howe would be full of confidence right now after Newcastle’s big win over Everton, but he’s clearly wary of the threat Tottenham Hotspur pose.

Despite the dismal defeat against Marseille in midweek, Newcastle United lifted spirits and recorded back-to-back wins in the Premier League this weekend.

Hello! It’s time to talk all things Newcastle United vs Tottenham. What are some of your early predictions?

Spurs are in crisis. We’re at home. What could go wrong?! I’m going for a 2-0 home win with Nick Woltemade to score yet again…

The Magpies now have a great chance to gather even more momentum, with another game already on the horizon. This tough period of fixtures for Newcastle could get a lot easier if they can beat Spurs at St. James’ Park on Tuesday night.

You’d be hard-pressed to find anyone backing Spurs for this game, but Eddie Howe still sees plenty to worry about when it comes to his next opponents.

Eddie Howe praises Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham haven’t won a game since the start of November, and that was in the Champions League. It’s now more than a month since the Lilywhites last triumphed in the league.

It’s a run of form that has seen Thomas Frank come under immense pressure in his role as Tottenham boss, especially after the defeat to Fulham at the weekend.

But, Howe is not about to rest on his laurels and take anything for granted. Speaking to the press (via the Club website) ahead of the midweek game, the Newcastle United manager recalled how difficult it was to play Spurs in the Carabao Cup not so long ago.

MORE NEWCASTLE STORIES

He said: “That was a tough game five weeks ago, and this will be no different… They’ll have a change in personnel with lots of players back from injury.

“They have a strong squad, they have good depth, very good players and a very good manager. I expect this will be a great game.”

Newcastle United must be big favourites to beat Spurs

Newcastle go into the game level on points with Spurs now, with only goal difference separating the two teams. Just over a week ago, the Magpies were six points adrift of Thomas Frank’s team.

They have caught up quickly and Alan Shearer now thinks Newcastle can get another win against Spurs and push on to compete for a place in the top five this season.

Will Eddie Howe make it five wins in a row against Spurs at home?!

History is definitely on Newcastle’s side. The Magpies have now won the last four meetings with Spurs with an aggregate score of 14-2. Make it five in a row and Newcastle could breach the top half of the league table.

Newcastle’s injury list is a concern, but they still have enough quality in the team to outdo a Spurs team low on confidence, especially with the St. James’ Park crowd lifting the Magpies.

Eddie Howe has addressed Nick Pope’s fitness ahead of Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur.

The Magpies were without their number one on Saturday, as Aaron Ramsdale came into the starting XI for Newcastle United’s win over Everton.

While he did not have a lot to do, Ramsdale performed well against Everton on what was his first Premier League start for the club.

The summer signing now looks set to retain his place in the Toon starting lineup, with Eddie Howe providing an update on Nick Pope’s status after missing the Everton game due to a groin injury.

Hello! It’s time to talk all things Newcastle United vs Tottenham. What are some of your early predictions?

Spurs are in crisis. We’re at home. What could go wrong?! I’m going for a 2-0 home win with Nick Woltemade to score yet again…

During his pre-match press conference ahead of facing Spurs, Howe was asked to comment on Pope’s fitness.

“No further update from Saturday,” he said.

“He’s one of a number of players we’ll analyse early this week and try to get a proper diagnosis.”

With no real update on Pope’s condition, it sounds like Ramsdale will be required to start again on Tuesday night.

MORE NEWCASTLE STORIES

It is an excellent opportunity for the 27-year-old, who will be keen to make the number one shirt his own and potentially earn a permanent move to St James’ Park.

Ramsdale has been forced to wait patiently for an opportunity, and now he finally has one amid Pope’s injury.

Eddie Howe delighted with Aaron Ramsdale after first Premier League start for Newcastle United

It was a relatively drama-free first Premier League start for Ramsdale on Saturday. As expected, he impressed with his passing ability, while his shot-stopping capabilities were not really tested.

Regardless, Howe believes the former Arsenal man will be very happy with himself ahead of facing Spurs on Tuesday night.

“I’m sure he felt good returning back to Newcastle, that feeling we haven’t had very often away from home when you’ve done a good job,” he said.

“He can be very pleased. Really good start for him. I’m sure he’s in a good place.”

Interestingly, Ramsdale has already been part of a Newcastle side that has beaten Spurs this season. He started the Carabao Cup triumph over Thomas Frank’s side at St James’ Park, keeping a clean sheet in a 2-0 win.

Newcastle United have endured an inconsistent start to the Premier League season, but Alan Shearer thinks they may have now turned the corner.

Eddie Howe’s side have finally won an away game in the Premier League, with Newcastle United beating Everton 4-1 on Saturday night.

It was a great performance from the Magpies, as they bounced back from their Champions League defeat to Marseille.

Malick Thiaw was outstanding again, scoring his first goals for the club. There were also excellent performances from Lewis Miley and Lewis Hall, as Newcastle now turn their attention back to St James’ Park.

Up next are two home games, and Alan Shearer has made a strong prediction ahead of Newcastle’s games against Tottenham Hotspur and Burnley at St James’ Park.

Hello! It’s time to talk all things Newcastle United vs Tottenham. What are some of your early predictions?

Alan Shearer backs Newcastle United to push for the top five now

Shearer has been speaking about Newcastle’s win over Everton on the latest episode of the Rest Is Football podcast.

The Newcastle United legend loved what he saw from Howe’s side, and believes a top five finish is very much back on the cards if they can follow it up with two home wins this week.

MORE NEWCASTLE STORIES

“He’s been a brilliant signing Malick Thiaw for Newcastle,” he said.

“He’s been superb. Couple of goals as well.

“So big performance and a big win and exactly what Newcastle needed with two home games coming up. They’ve got Spurs on Tuesday at home and they’ve then got Burnley at home on Saturday. So big two games.

“If they would take six points from that, then you just never know again. They’d be back in the hunt for the top five.”

Why Newcastle United should be very confident ahead of facing Spurs

As Shearer says, the win against Everton was exactly what Newcastle United needed. Now they prepare to face Spurs at St James’ Park, which is a fixture they have dominated in recent years.

Since Eddie Howe became Newcastle United manager, he has won all four of his games against Spurs at St James’ Park in all competitions.

The last time Tottenham came to St James’ Park…

Remember how annoyed they were about the Djed Spence incident? Some say he’s still tying his boots🤣

In fact, the Magpies have actually beaten Tottenham Hotspur in six of their last seven games home and away.

To make matters worse for Thomas Frank’s side, they have not won any of their last four Premier League games. Following their North London derby embarrassment, they were beaten 2-1 by Fulham on Saturday.

Pressure is mounting on Frank, and Newcastle United away is probably the last fixture he would want coming up right now.

Howe’s side should be very confident going into Tuesday’s game, but that must not turn into complacency.

Newcastle United are into the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup after Aaron Ramsdale’s fine performance against Tottenham Hotspur.

Newcastle United are looking to win the Carabao Cup once again after the incredible victory over Liverpool last season.

Eddie Howe moved another step closer to achieving that goal on Wednesday night as Newcastle beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-0.

Fabian Schar and Nick Woltemade found the net to book Newcastle’s place against Fulham in the last eight.

Tottenham Hotspur error highlights Newcastle United’s Aaron Ramsdale deal

Woltemade’s latest goal saw the German forward beat Tottenham goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky to Joe Willock’s cross.

Kinsky came off his line but flapped at Willock’s delivery, allowing Woltemade to nip in and score.

The Czech stopper was called upon for a rare start in place of first-choice stopper Guglielmo Vicario, but he did not look particularly comfortable throughout.

That was a stark contrast to Newcastle’s goalkeeping situation, as Aaron Ramsdale came in for Nick Pope.

MORE NEWCASTLE STORIES

Ramsdale was superb throughout and made two brilliant saves in the second half, denying Pape Matar Sarr and Richarlison.

Ramsdale may only be on loan at Newcastle from Southampton, but this really goes to show the value of having a backup goalkeeper with proven quality.

Kinsky joined Spurs from Slavia Prague in January, and he is ultimately still developing his game behind Vicario.

Conversely, Ramsdale is tried and tested at the top level and slotted right into the Newcastle side.

Switch Kinsky and Ramsdale around, and you may not have seen the same result on Wednesday, with Newcastle benefiting from having such a quality, experienced stopper between the sticks.

Aaron Ramsdale must take every chance to impress Newcastle United

Ramsdale already knows that he has Howe’s trust.

The pair worked together at Bournemouth, and Howe’s decision to reunite with Ramsdale summed up his thoughts on the goalkeeper.

That gives Ramsdale a great chance to secure a long-term Newcastle future anyway, especially with a permanent option in his loan move.

Ramsdale still needs to take every opportunity available, and playing a starring role in the Carabao Cup certainly helps his chances of staying at St James’ Park.

Forget Sandro Tonali, Eddie Howe says surprise Newcastle United star 'set the tone' vs Spurs - Geordie Boot Boys
Description

There were some outstanding Newcastle United performances against Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday night, but Sandro Tonali was the star of the show.

He won the player of the match award, with Nick Woltemade calling Sandro Tonali ‘quality’ after the Carabao Cup victory.

The 25-year-old was spectacular during Newcastle United’s win over Spurs, and deserves all of the plaudits that are coming his way.

However, Eddie Howe has picked out two other players for their role in the Magpies’ cup victory, one of which is slightly surprising.

Eddie Howe’s unprovoked praise for Joe Willock after Newcastle United beat Spurs

After Newcastle United’s victory against Spurs, Howe spoke to the club’s official website.

He was asked about Nick Woltemade’s goal and performance, with Howe taking the opportunity to praise the way his forward led the press alongside Joe Willock.

“I was pleased that he scored,” he said.

“All strikers need to score regularly, so that will help him. A good performance from Nick.

MORE NEWCASTLE STORIES

“I thought he worked really hard with Joe Willock. They set the tone on our press early in the game. They certainly helped the team.”

It is great to see Willock being singled out for praise by the Newcastle United manager, especially when he was not specifically asked about the midfielder.

Willock was a surprise inclusion in the Magpies’ starting XI, named in the side for the first time since the 0-0 draw with Bournemouth.

The 26-year-old performed well, and will hope his display results in more minutes in the future after a frustrating period.

Joe Willock makes up for lost time with Newcastle United assist

As well as leading the press, Willock and Woltemade combined for Newcastle United’s second goal of the night.

It was Willock’s cross that Woltemade headed home, netting his sixth goal for the club after becoming Newcastle’s most expensive signing ever.

The goal will have boosted the 23-year-old’s confidence further, while it will also have provided a boost for Willock.

That was the £25million man’s first goal contribution since February. He provided an assist for Alexander Isak during the Magpies’ 4-3 win over Nottingham Forest last season, but has been unable to influence proceedings in the final third ever since.
