Alan Shearer was impressed with Newcastle United against Tottenham Hotspur, but leaves with a feeling of disappointment.

That is a feeling shared by the entire Toon Army, as Newcastle United drew 2-2 with Spurs despite leading twice.

It was a frustrating night for Eddie Howe’s side, who were largely dominant against Spurs. The only problem they had was finding the net, with the breakthrough eventually coming in the 71st minute.

Late HEARTBREAK 😫 Who was your Newcastle MOTM against Tottenham?👏🏻

Before that moment, Newcastle United had plenty of chances to take the lead. However, they were unable to capitalise on their domination.

That was the frustration for Alan Shearer, who has addressed Tuesday night’s draw at St James’ Park.

Alan Shearer left frustrated after strong Newcastle United performance

Shearer and Gary Lineker have discussed Newcastle’s draw with Spurs on the latest episode of the Rest Is Football podcast.

The Newcastle United legend has shared his frustration at his former side not making their domination count after playing so well.

“But you were texting saying that Newcastle should be three up,” Lineker said.

“That was the disappointment tonight,” Shearer replied.

“I thought Newcastle played really well. There was an intensity about their game.

“Two full-backs again, I thought played really well. They limited Tottenham to very, very little in that first half, but they didn’t score. Lewis Miley had a good chance. Joelinton hit the post, one or two other bits.

“And you always worry when you have that much domination in the first half, and you don’t score, you think, okay. And he changed it, took Tonali off. I don’t know whether he got an injury or not at half time, but he took Tonali off and put Bruno Guimaraes on. And his performance second half was brilliant.”

More points thrown away, do Newcastle United have a mentality problem?😠

Bad feeling not being able to come away with the three points, especially right at the end of the match. We need to improve our mentality so that mistakes like this don’t happen again. On Saturday we have another opportunity at home, which we can’t afford to waste.

Newcastle United let Tottenham back into the game

The big frustration in the second half was that Newcastle United let Tottenham back into the game.

The Magpies’ game management was appalling, constantly handing the momentum to their opponents. Eddie Howe’s side were incredibly sloppy in possession, with Joelinton in particular guilty of not protecting the ball.

That allowed Spurs to put Newcastle under pressure, and it eventually resulted in them rescuing a point.

After the game, Bruno Guimaraes questioned Newcastle United’s mentality, and he was right to do that. Having dominated the game and taken the lead, they should have seen it out.

They were warned once when Spurs made it 1-1, but they did not heed that warning after Anthony Gordon put them back in front. Newcastle gave Spurs all the motivation they needed to salvage a point, and only have themselves to blame for the 95th minute disappointment.

Bruno Guimaraes has sent a warning to his Newcastle United teammates after drawing with Tottenham Hotspur.

The 28-year-old produced a wonderful cameo at St James’ Park on Tuesday night, but it was not enough to inspire his side to victory. Newcastle United drew 2-2 with Spurs, despite leading twice.

The Magpies conceded a 95th minute equaliser from Cristian Romero, with Aaron Ramsdale criticised for his role in the goal.

It is a draw that feels like a defeat for Newcastle United, who missed the chance to climb into the top half of the Premier League table.

Bruno Guimaraes calls out Newcastle United’s ‘mentality’ after Spurs draw

Following Newcastle’s draw with Spurs, Bruno Guimaraes took to his official Instagram account to send a very strong message to both his teammates and supporters.

He wrote: “Bad feeling not being able to come away with the three points, especially right at the end of the match. We need to improve our mentality so that mistakes like this don’t happen again.

“On Saturday we have another opportunity at home, which we can’t afford to waste.”

As Bruno says, Newcastle have a chance to respond on Saturday against Burnley. The Brazilian midfielder will likely return to the starting XI to face the Clarets, having initially dropped to the bench against Spurs.

The captain was introduced at half-time and put Newcastle 1-0 in front, but he and his teammates were not able to protect that lead. They were not able to protect a 2-1 lead either after Anthony Gordon converted a penalty.

Bruno has issued a statement after the frustrating draw.

Why Bruno Guimaraes came on at half-time during Newcastle United vs Spurs

When Eddie Howe’s starting XI was announced, it was a major shock to see Bruno drop to the bench.

The Newcastle United manager had taken the chance to rest his skipper, with Sandro Tonali coming into the side and Lewis Miley retaining his place after a strong display versus Everton.

It was Tonali who Bruno replaced at the beginning of the second half, which certainly shocked the Toon Army.

However, Howe confirmed after the game that the decision to take Tonali off was enforced through injury.

“Sandro took a knock in the first half,” he told the Chronicle.

“I don’t quite know the extent of the injury or what type of injury it is.”

Description

A 2-2 draw may have been a disappointing result for Newcastle in the end, but Eddie Howe will have learned a lot about his team.

Newcastle United were unable to make it three consecutive wins after they twice threw away a lead against Tottenham Hotspur at St. James’ Park.

Late HEARTBREAK 😫 Who was your Newcastle MOTM against Tottenham?👏🏻

A fine goal from Bruno Guimaraes and a controversial Newcastle penalty converted by Anthony Gordon should have been enough. However, poor defending allowed Cristian Romero to twice find the back of the net and snatch a point for Spurs.

It was a disappointing injury-time collapse for the Magpies, but at least the two goalscorers proved a point as to why they need to be starting from now on.

What Eddie Howe said about Bruno Guimaraes and Anthony Gordon speaks volumes

Interestingly, Eddie Howe did not include Guimaraes in his starting XI vs Spurs. That came as a shock, but the Brazilian came on at half-time and truly changed the game.

Speaking after the match, Howe told the press how impressed he was with his captain, saying: “He did very well, it was an outstanding finish. He made a difference, his enthusiasm, passion and energy made a big difference.”

Indeed, for us, Guimaraes was the top rated Newcastle United player on the night. Now, surely, Howe will think twice before leaving him on the bench again.

MORE NEWCASTLE STORIES

But, credit must go to Gordon, too. The winger has had a tough time of late, but scored his first Premier League goal since January when he converted coolly from the spot.

Discussing his role in the draw, Howe added: “I was really pleased with his impact, he definitely changed the dynamic, energy, pace, directness. It was a good cameo for Anthony.”

Does Anthony Gordon start vs Burnley now?

Prior to tonight, it seemed Anthony Gordon had slipped down the pecking order at Newcastle. He was poor against Marseille, and only played a couple of minutes against Everton.

It was not surprising to see him excluded from the starting XI again on Tuesday, but he more than made up for it by coming on and first of all helping create the goal for Guimaraes before taking responsibility for the penalty.

🗣️ Mark Clattenburg gives his instant reaction to Newcastle United’s penalty vs Tottenham, where do you stand on it?

“Newcastle can find themselves very lucky to be awarded a penalty kick after Bentancur was adjudged to have fouled Burn after a corner was played inside the penalty area. Both players are holding each other while fighting for the ball and the on-field decision to play on was accepted.

“For the VAR to interfere, it must be a clear error from the referee, and I don’t believe it was. Each week, we are seeing inconsistencies with VAR, and it’s creating frustration.”

Mark Clattenburg talking exclusively to Geordie Boot Boys

That goal will have done Gordon the world of good. Given Jacob Murphy was fairly anonymous and Anthony Elanga didn’t make much of an impact against Spurs, we can definitely see Gordon starting against Burnley this weekend.

Gordon may end up playing on the right, or Harvey Barnes might come across to that side. Either way, he has to start against the Clarets, and he will surely relish facing the relegation-threatened side.

Could the Anthony Gordon redemption arc be on? Only time will tell.

Description

There was disappointment all round for Newcastle after twice throwing away the lead against Tottenham Hotspur, but one player stood out as the scapegoat.

The likes of Bruno Guimaraes and Anthony Gordon were the standout performers for Newcastle against Spurs, but their impact off the bench was still not enough to get all three points.

Late HEARTBREAK 😫 Who was your Newcastle MOTM against Tottenham?👏🏻

Newcastle United had the lead going into injury time after a controversial penalty for the Magpies. But, with just minutes to go, Cristian Romero sent an overhead kick into the back of the net past a flailing Aaron Ramsdale.

And, it’s the Newcastle goalkeeper on whom the fans have pinned the blame after the draw at St. James’ Park, with many calling for change in the New Year.

Newcastle United fans are unhappy with Aaron Ramsdale

Taking to Twitter/X to react to the result and the performance, there is one name that keeps cropping up in the comments from Newcastle fans and it seems they are not happy with Ramsdale’s display.

Ramsdale has stepped in for the injured Nick Pope in the last two games, but supporters are already wishing he hadn’t.

One said, “Don’t dare criticise Pope again.” Another added, “Everyone wanted Pope out. Ramsdale was punted from Arsenal and was at Southampton for a reason. Back-up and cup at best. Two shots on goal from a defender and both went in.”

MORE NEWCASTLE STORIES

A third said: “Our goalkeepers are starting to worry me a little. I thought Ramsdale should’ve saved their second.”

Pope is out for another three weeks, so Newcastle are going to have to stick with Ramsdale. That is, unless Eddie Howe listens to a few of the supporters who suggested he, “Give John Ruddy a crack in goal Saturday.”

One even looked further into the past and said: “We shouldn’t have ever replaced Martin Dubravka.”

Developments this week suggested Newcastle will look at signing James Trafford again soon. Given his debacle tonight, it seems supporters are behind the idea of replacing Ramsdale.

One wrote: “We need a new keeper next month.” Another told Howe: “Please get Trafford in January.”

Aaron Ramsdale has to dust himself off quickly

As we say, Nick Pope is not coming back any time soon. Ramsdale will almost certainly play throughout that period of absence for the Newcastle number one, and he cannot let this game against Spurs get him down.

We saw Pope make a massive error against Marseille, and these things happen to goalkeepers. It’s all about how they react that matters.

Has Newcastle 2-2 Tottenham made you feel any differently about Aaron Ramsdale?👀

At the end of the day, yes, Ramsdale has ultimately cost Newcastle the points against Tottenham, but he played really well against Everton at the weekend. It’s swings and roundabouts.

If he can produce a big performance against Burnley and then go into the Tyne-Wear derby and pull off some important saves, the Magpies’ fans will soon forget these mistakes.

Newcastle United and Tottenham played out a dramatic 2-2 draw at St. James’ Park on Tuesday night, with a penalty decision proving to be the major talking point.

A drab first half made way for a four-goal thriller in the second 45 on Tyneside tonight, with the points shared between Newcastle United and Spurs.

Late HEARTBREAK 😫 Who was your Newcastle MOTM against Tottenham?👏🏻

Eddie Howe’s men thought they had snatched the win with a late penalty that was dispatched by Anthony Gordon. On balance, Newcastle’s performance probably deserved the three points, too.

But, did the Geordies deserve their penalty? Or was Cristian Romero’s late leveller a case of justice served for the Lilywhites?

Newcastle United fortunate to get penalty

The penalty was given for a holding offence, with Tottenham’s Rodrigo Bentancur adjudged to have held sustained contact with Dan Burn before pulling him down. He also wasn’t looking at the ball, which may have been enough for referee Tom Bramall to give the decision after an on-field review.

Geordie Boot Boys spoke exclusively to Mark Clattenburg about the incident, and the former Premier League referee insisted Newcastle were given a penalty that never should have been.

He said: “Newcastle can find themselves very lucky to be awarded a penalty kick after Bentancur was adjudged to have fouled Burn after a corner was played inside the penalty area. Both players are holding each other while fighting for the ball and the on-field decision to play on was accepted.

Points dropped, but a key moment for Anthony Gordon

The penalty may not have won Newcastle the game in the end, but it was still a huge moment for Anthony Gordon.

He was left out of the Newcastle starting XI again after a tough week, but he came on, impacted the game, and showed confidence to take the penalty and slot it away.

Bitter Rio Ferdinand claims Newcastle got away with one vs Tottenham, is he right?🤔

That was Gordon’s first Premier League goal since January. Now, he has to make sure we don’t wait long for his next goal, and that he carries this momentum into the next game.

Gordon has slipped down the pecking order of late, but this performance and that goal can change everything.

Newcastle United emerged victorious against Tottenham Hotspur tonight with a narrow 2-1 win, with two players standing out despite starting on the bench.

Despite high hopes for an exciting encounter, the two teams played out a fairly drab first half. On balance, Newcastle United probably had the better chances in the first 45, but neither side looked like taking the lead.

The second half started a lot brighter for Eddie Howe’s team, with the Magpies laying siege to the Spurs penalty area for a positive ten-minute spell.

Late HEARTBREAK 😫 Who was your Newcastle MOTM against Tottenham?👏🏻

Still, despite a slightly more urgent feel to the game after the break, neither team looked like scoring. That is, until Bruno Guimaraes produced a moment of magic to rifle home past the Spurs goalkeeper.

Tottenham did reply eventually, though. Cristian Romero, of all people, popping up in the box with a great header to level the scores with just over ten minutes to go.

A controversial penalty was then given late in the game after Dan Burn was adjudged to have been fouled in the box. Up stepped Anthony Gordon, of all people, to slot away what he thought was the winner…

Cristian Romero had something to say about that again, firing home an overhead kick to level in injury time and break Newcastle hearts.

Newcastle United player ratings

Aaron Ramsdale – 4

Will be disappointed with his distribution, which is normally such a strong point for Aaron Ramsdale. Had very little to do in terms of keeping Tottenham out but maybe should have done better with the Romero header. Was even worse when allowing the second Romero goal past him, reacting incredibly slowly to the overhead kick.

Tino Livramento – 7

Had very little to do defensively but pushed forward plenty and put some enticing deliveries into the box. Looked composed and carried the ball really well.

Malick Thiaw – 6

A very quiet evening for the man who made so much noise at the weekend. That’s largely because Tottenham gave him very little to worry about, though.

Dan Burn – 6

Was arguably the more impressive of the two centre-halves, offering more going forward and managing to keep Spurs quiet, too. But, his stock dropped when he allowed Cristian Romero an inch of space to get in front of him and head home the equaliser.

Lewis Hall – 7

Like his colleague on the other side, Lewis Hall was able to carry the ball forward regularly and caused plenty of problems for Pedro Porro. Will be frustrated that he let the cross in for Tottenham’s goal, but other than that, a really solid night for the full-back.

Lewis Miley – 7

Lewis Miley getting the start was a surprise, but he was a real livewire in the first 45 minutes. Had the best chance of the opening half. Disappeared a bit in the second half, but never really put a foot wrong.

Sandro Tonali – 6

Brought back into the starting line-up after being benched at the weekend but only lasted 45 minutes here. Good, solid passing, but had little chance to make a real impact in the middle of the park.

Joelinton – 6

Did the dirty work quietly, as always, but never quite took his game to second gear at all. In fairness, the game was not really contested in the central areas, though.

Jacob Murphy – 6

Looked to be outmuscled a few times and wasn’t quite with the pace of the game from the get-go. Will be really disappointed given the fact he was handed the start, and ultimately failed to repay that faith.

Harvey Barnes – 7

Opened the second half with an incisive run down the flank but was unable to steer his shot past Guglielmo Vicario. Definitely looked like the most likely Newcastle man to make a difference, but was unable to get past Pedro Porro.

Nick Woltemade – 7

Showed once again how good he can be with his feet in and around the box. Had a header cleared off the line. Held the line really well, bringing others into the game – clearly enjoyed having players running off him and around him more.

Substitutes make the difference for Newcastle

Bruno Guimaraes – 9

On for Tonali at half-time. Played one sublime pass through for Woltemade but sadly it led to nothing. Proved that Howe was wrong to drop him, coming on and spraying the ball around beautifully. Scored a wonderful goal to separate the two teams.

Anthony Gordon – 8

Replaced Harvey Barnes with 25 minutes to go. Gordon may have fallen down the pecking order right now, but he came on and made a nearly instant impact by driving forward and creating the opportunity for Guimaraes (via Woltemade). Stepped up and scored the decisive penalty, too, which shows he’s not about to shy away from his poor form.

Anthony Elanga – 6

On for Jacob Murphy at the same time as Gordon, with Howe switching up his wingers completely. Didn’t have much luck down the right.

Fabian Schar – N/A

Came on really late as Newcastle looked to shut up shop. Wouldn’t be fair to judge him based on a five-minute cameo.

Eddie Howe has named his starting XI to take on Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League tonight as the Magpies go for their third successive win.

After defeating Man City and hammering Everton in the last week or so, Newcastle United are slowly but surely climbing the Premier League table and are growing in confidence.

Newcastle’s hopes of Champions League qualification are growing, too, and a win against Spurs will go a long way towards making that dream a reality.

We know Eddie Howe fears the threat Spurs pose, but history suggests Newcastle can get another win against the Lilywhites tonight.

Newcastle United’s confirmed XI to face Tottenham 📄

⚠️Bruno Guimaraes has been dropped, but is that the right decision?!

Injuries are hitting Newcastle hard. There’s also the matter of certain players, like Nick Pope and Anthony Gordon, being out of form. So, what do we think of the line-up Howe has gone with for the clash at St. James’ Park?

Eddie Howe makes controversial Lewis Miley call

One of the big questions ahead of tonight was whether Nick Pope would be available. Even if he was match fit, there’s also still the matter of deciding between the Newcastle number one and his rival, Aaron Ramsdale.

The latter played really well against Everton and deserves to keep his spot, but the fact that Pope is out for the next three weeks does make Howe’s decision a lot easier.

MORE NEWCASTLE STORIES

In defence, Howe’s hand is forced really. With the likes of Kieran Trippier, Emil Krafth, and Sven Botman out injured, the backline is fairly obvious. Malick Thiaw will be hoping he can add to his goal tally after that double against Everton, while Dan Burn is alongside him as expected.

Most importantly, both Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall start again. The two full-backs make Newcastle a better team whenever they play, and fans will be delighted to see them in the starting XI again tonight.

In our predicted XI for the Spurs game, we suggested Lewis Miley would step aside for Sandro Tonali. That’s despite Miley’s incredible coming-of-age performance against Everton, but we were wrong.

Interestingly, Howe has kept the youngster in the team, but it’s captain Bruno Guimaraes who drops to the bench. It will be fascinating to see if this risky call pays off.

Name the former Newcastle and Spurs player if you can…

Extra bonus points available if you can remember his thunderous goal against Man United ⚡

Out wide, Newcastle’s player of the month for November, Harvey Barnes is in the team again, while on the opposite side, it’s Jacob Murphy. Despite his strong showing against Everton, Anthony Elanga is back on the bench.

Anthony Gordon has dropped down the pecking order of late. After his performance against Marseille and his late but uneventful cameo against Everton, it’s no surprise to see him on the bench again, and this is surely a clear warning from Howe that he has simply not been good enough.

Finally, up top, Nick Woltemade leads the line. With Yoane Wissa still not ready to play and William Osula injured, too, there’s not much choice for Eddie Howe. Still, given the form Woltemade is in, you wouldn’t want anyone else starting in attack anyway.

Newcastle United bought Anthony Elanga this summer, but he was not the only winger who the Magpies looked at.

At the start of the transfer window, Bryan Mbeumo was Newcastle United’s top target. He ended up joining Manchester United instead, with financial shortcomings stopping the Magpies from striking a deal.

That forced the Newcastle United recruitment team to look elsewhere, with Anthony Elanga joining for £55million from Nottingham Forest. After initially struggling, Elanga’s performance against Everton suggests that he has turned the corner.

That will be the hope, as there were plenty of other top stars that Newcastle considered buying. Antoine Semenyo was a target, as was Mohammed Kudus. He would join Tottenham Hotspur from West Ham for £55million, and has been a bright spark in a poor Spurs team.

If you could add one Spurs player to the Newcastle United squad, who would you pick?

I’d go Mohammed Kudus, give us yours in the comments!

Warren Barton thought Newcastle United would bid for Mohammed Kudus

But would he have fitted in at Newcastle United?

That is certainly the view of former Toon defender Warren Barton, who has told the NUFC360 YouTube channel that he thought Newcastle United were going to make a move for Kudus during the summer.

“I wouldn’t rush into anything now and buy,” he said when asked if he would like to see Newcastle buy anyone in January.

“I like Kudus who went from West Ham. He was one I liked.

MORE NEWCASTLE STORIES

“I thought he would maybe be a player that we would go for, but obviously he’s gone to Tottenham. He’s not going to move.”

Kudus has outperformed Elanga so far this season, with the latter only just getting his first official assist during Saturday’s 4-1 win over Everton.

Warren Barton says Newcastle United do not need to be busy in January

With the January transfer window looming, it has been reported that Newcastle United want a centre-midfielder and a full-back.

They are the two priority positions, with Newcastle very keen to sign Kees Smit from AZ Alkmaar.

If Newcastle United were to make ONE signing in January? Who would you hope it is? Comment below

However, Barton is not of the belief that the Magpies need to be active when the transfer window swings open again.

“I’m not desperate to go into the market,” he said.

“I know you always feel you’ve got to go and strengthen. The three in midfield are as good as anything when fit.”

Barton added: “Yes, you always want to buy, but the real ones you really want, like when he waited for Botman, have normally been in the summer.”

Newcastle United could put themselves in an incredible position if they beat Tottenham Hotspur.

Tyneside had been awash with doom and gloom before the international break, but suddenly the landscape has changed at Newcastle United.

Eddie Howe’s side have beaten Manchester City and Everton to win back-to-back Premier League games for the first time this season, and will aim to make it a hat-trick on Tuesday night. Newcastle are predicted to beat Spurs, with Thomas Frank’s side struggling for form as they head to St James’ Park.

The Magpies can move into the top half with victory if results go their way, while they can also surpass where they were this stage last season.

First goalscorer tonight, who are we going for?

I fancy this guy to score again!

Newcastle United can surpass 2024/25 points tally with win over Spurs

If Newcastle United beat Spurs on Tuesday night, they will be on 21 points after 14 games.

For context, Eddie Howe’s side had picked up 20 points after their first 14 games during the 2024/25 season. That went on to be the club’s best season ever, having won the Carabao Cup and qualified for the Champions League.

While Newcastle have started the current campaign sluggishly, the talk of Eddie Howe being under pressure was farcical. His side were never too far away from getting where they need to be, and now they are firmly back in the mix to challenge for Europe.

MORE NEWCASTLE STORIES

The top half of the Premier League table is incredibly tight, just like it was last season. Add in the context of Newcastle’s striker troubles and the position they suddenly find themselves in is impressive.

Factor in Yoane Wissa’s looming return, and there are plenty of reasons for Newcastle United fans to be positive.

Thomas Frank has some very kind words for Eddie Howe

I admire Eddie and his coaching staff and everything they do. They’re a very intense, aggressive team.

Champions League commitment amplifies Newcastle United’s potential achievement

What is even more impressive is the fact that Newcastle are doing similar to last season despite the added pressure of competing in Europe.

The Magpies are not being bogged down by the Champions League, with Howe managing to rotate his Newcastle United squad unlike the last European adventure.

Newcastle’s depth will continue to be tested, however, with the pattern of two games a week set to carry on through to February if they beat Fulham in the Carabao Cup quarter-final.

Chris Sutton has given his verdict on who will win between Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur tonight.

The two sides meet at St James’ Park for the second time this season, with Eddie Howe already holding a victory over Thomas Frank’s side. That came in the Carabao Cup back in October.

Newcastle United beat Spurs 2-0 that night thanks to goals from Fabian Schar and Nick Woltemade, and Eddie Howe would love to see a repeat of that result as he aims to secure a third consecutive Premier League win.

That should not be a problem according to Chris Sutton, who has big concerns regarding Spurs ahead of Tuesday’s game on Tyneside.

First goalscorer tonight, who are we going for?

Chris Sutton backs Newcastle United to win against Spurs

As part of his Premier League predictions for BBC Sport, Sutton has given his verdict on the result of Newcastle United vs Spurs.

He has gone for a Toon victory, with Sutton admitting he thinks Thomas Frank is ‘under pressure’ at Tottenham Hotspur.

“Tottenham boss Thomas Frank needs a result,” he wrote.

MORE NEWCASTLE STORIES

“He was so relaxed when he was at Brentford but now he just looks like a guy under pressure.

“Frank saying the supporters who booed Guglielmo Vicario after his mistake against Fulham “can’t be true Tottenham fans” underlines the friction he is feeling at the moment, but he does have a point about the effect that has.

“As a player who has been booed a lot over the years, I can tell you that it doesn’t have a positive impact on your performance. Being serious, though, I just don’t get it – it just creates negativity.

“The Spurs players will probably be relieved to be playing away after that, but Newcastle have found a bit of form in the past week so this is not an easy trip at all.

“Tottenham have already lost at St James’ Park this season in the Carabao Cup, and I am going for a repeat result, by the same scoreline.”

Sutton’s prediction: Newcastle United 2 Tottenham Hotspur 0.

If you could add one Spurs player to the Newcastle United squad, who would you pick?

Newcastle United must start fast against struggling Spurs

Fulham blew Spurs away on Saturday night. They were 2-0 up within six minutes, giving Frank’s side a mountain to climb.

While they were able to claw one goal back, it was not enough to salvage a point as boos rang round the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

It will be a different surrounding on Tuesday night, but the Magpies can still catch Spurs cold with a fast start. Newcastle have got all the momentum, while Spurs are a team that is massively lacking confidence.

Combine that with Newcastle’s record against Spurs at home and it is easy to see why Howe’s side are favourites. The Newcastle United manager has won all four of his home games against Spurs since replacing Steve Bruce, and will be eager to make it five.

That can happen if his side get off to a hot start and capitalise on Spurs’ miserable form.
