The Knowledge | Firsts and lasts against Palace - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

The visit of Crystal Palace to N17 on Thursday night (8pm UK) brings back recent memories of a key moment in our recent history - the first match at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on 3 April, 2019.

That was 113 years after Palace's first visit to the Lane in the Southern League back in October, 1906 and just short of short of 50 years after we hosted the Eagles for the first time in the Football League - Boxing Day, 1969.

As we prepare to meet Palace again - here are a few firsts and lasts against the team from Selhurst Park...

Notable firsts in N17

Palace were formed in September, 1905 and we met for the first time in the Southern League at the Lane on 6 October, 1906, a 3-0 win thanks to a goals from James Reid (2) and Joe Walton. We were promoted into the Football League in 1908/09 and had to wait until Boxing Day, 1969 to meet Palace again in league action - and this had another first...

Our first goals of the Premier League era

It's fair to say we made a less than auspicious start to the first Premier League campaign of 1992/93. We kicked-off football's new dawn with a goalless draw at Southampton on 15 August, 1992 and followed up with a 2-0 loss at home to Coventry. We registered our first Premier League goals on 22 August in a 2-2 draw against Palace with Gordon Durie and Steve Sedgley on target. Without a win in our first five, we finally recorded our first Premier League win against Sheffield United on 2 September - where Teddy Sheringham bagged his first Spurs goal. We ended up eighth.

First game at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

An emotional night as we stepped back into N17 after a short hiatus at Wembley between the Lane's Finale in May, 2017 and this first senior game at the new stadium on 3 April, 2019. Heung-Min Son carved his name in club history by scoring our first goal at the world-class venue with Christian Eriksen wrapping up a 2-0 win. Six days later we were back and more history for Sonny with the first Champions League goal at the stadium in a memorable 1-0 win against City in the quarter-final, first leg on our way to the final.

A huge last - Greavsie's last game

All-time great Jimmy Greaves made his last appearance in a Spurs shirt against Palace on 28 January, 1970. Signed from AC Milan in December, 1961, Greavsie set a goalscoring record in Lilywhite that few believed was possible to get near - that's the gravity of Harry Kane's achievement when he surpassed Greavsie's 266 and made it to 280 goals before departing for Bayern Munich in 2023. To this day, anyone who watched him will say Greavsie is the best finisher the game has ever seen - and his goals helped us win the FA Cup in 1962, European Cup Winners Cup in 1963 - he scored in both finals - and the FA Cup again in 1967.

Two games, two days...

We faced Palace in the Premier League on 27 December, 1994 - just 24 hours after both teams had turned out on Boxing Day. We beat Norwich 2-0 at Carrow Road while Palace were held 0-0 by QPR at Selhurst Park. Maybe it was no surprise that this game ended goalless as well at the Lane. This was the last time that our players were called upon to play league games on consecutive days, a regular occurrence over the Christmas and Easter holiday periods in years gone by.

Our Men’s First Team players were hard at work at Hotspur Way today as attention turns to Thursday night’s test against Crystal Palace.

They were put through their paces by Head Coach Igor Tudor at our Enfield Training Centre as we look to get back to winning ways against Thursday’s opponents.

Last time out against the Eagles, we walked away from Selhurst Park 1-0 winners thanks to an Archie Gray first-half header. A win will see us complete the double over Oliver Glasner’s side for the third time in four seasons.

Yves Bissouma: “We need everyone, every fan, because this is really important” - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

An emotional Yves Bissouma declared ‘we know the situation will change’ after Sunday’s loss at Fulham – underlining the important of our next fixture against Crystal Palace in the Premier League at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Thursday night (8pm UK).

The midfielder admitted ‘I don’t have the words’ to express his and the team’s disappointment at our current predicament.

There’s also a determination to put it right. Speaking to us at Craven Cottage, ‘Biss’ was asked for a message to the fans, who all want to hear that the players are confident of turning our domestic form around.

“Yeah, for sure. I'm sure we're going to… it's some details. We believe in each other, we believe in the coach, we believe in the work he does for us. We believe in everything.

“We know the situation will change. We just have to find the right way to do it, because we have everything - we have players, we have a team, we have a group, a solid group.

“It's a moment. Of course, we don't feel good. It's not what we want, but together we can change things. I'm sure we will change things as soon as possible.

“We will start with the game that's coming. We will need everyone. Every fan, because this is really important, especially when we're at home. We will need the fans. We need them. We always need them. I think next game will be the game. It's time to change things.”

Internationals | Wins for Lenna Gunning-Williams and Matilda Nildén - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

Young forwards Lenna Gunning-Williams and Matilda Nilden enjoyed a positive start to March international camp with their respective nations on Monday.

Starting with Lenna, our Academy graduate stepped off the bench in the second half as England Under-23s ran out 1-0 winners over France in Clairefontaine.

The 22-year-old was introduced just after the hour mark as Lexi Lloyd-Smith’s first half strike was enough to secure a win for the Young Lionesses. Lauren Smith’s side are next in action on Friday (6 March) as they welcome the Netherlands to Shrewsbury Town (7pm UK).

Matilda, meanwhile, started for Sweden Under-23s as they recorded a 3-1 win over Belgium on Monday evening.

Starting on the left of the front three, the young Swede was inches away from opening the deadlock in the contest in the early stages as her curling effort from the far left of the box struck the underside of the crossbar.

The 21-year-old went on to complete 77 minutes for her nation as late goals from Wilma Leidhammar and Julia Ragnarsson earned Sweden the win on the night, after Ellen Wangerheim’s first half goal had been cancelled out by Lisa Petry.

Sweden Under-23s are also back in action on Friday afternoon, this time taking on Romania in an international friendly (1pm UK).

Club statement - UEFA sanctions - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

The Club has been informed of sanctions handed down to us by UEFA following the utterly abhorrent conduct of a small number of individuals at our recent Champions League away match in Frankfurt.

The Club has cooperated fully with UEFA's investigation, as well as with German police on the night and, subsequently, the Met Police.

We can confirm that all three individuals found to be making Nazi salutes towards Eintracht Frankfurt fans have been identified and have received indefinite bans under the Club’s Sanctions and Banning Policy.

The Club stands firmly against all forms of discrimination and has therefore taken the strongest possible action. The disgusting behaviour of a minority of so-called fans on the night is in no way reflective of the values of our Club and its supporters.

Fulham 2-1 Spurs, Premier League | Igor Tudor’s verdict - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

Igor Tudor spoke about the the team’s ‘desire to win’ in the second half at Craven Cottage, but conceded it wasn’t enough as Fulham ran out 2-1 winners in the Premier League on Sunday.

The damage was done in the first half as goals from Harry Wilson and Alex Iwobi saw us 2-0 down at the break. Fulham remained on top at the start of the second half but the tide started to turn as Richarlison headed home from Archie Gray’s cross for 2-1 on 65 minutes.

Richy, Mathys Tel and Pape Matar Sarr all impressed off the bench as we pushed for an equaliser without carving out further clear-cut chances – the best fell late to Sarr, who fired into the side-netting.

Speaking to us afterwards, Igor reflected: “I'm not happy with the performance. Fulham were better. Second half, we started to push. In the end, there was desire to win, but not enough. There was some positivity (in the second half) of course. We need to stay focused and work to progress.”

We now face five games in 17 days, starting with Everton’s visit to N17 on Thursday night (8pm UK).

Asked how difficult it must be to get his ideas across with such a schedule, Igor said: “We need do the best that we can, in a difficult moment, to stay all together, thinking positive and keep working.”

Women’s Under-19s progress in Capital Cup after impressive display at Dulwich - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

Our Women’s Under-19s put in a professional display to book their spot in the quarter-final of the Capital Cup after a 2-0 win at Dulwich Hamlet on Sunday afternoon.

Having netted a brace earlier in the week against Leicester City, Jhanaie Pierre was heavily involved in our opening goal at Champion Hill, her low cross eventually turned into her own net by Zahra Cheeseman as we capitalised on a positive first period against senior opposition.

We were indebted to some sensational saves from Eleanor Heeps, whose experience led our young group to an important victory, alongside some important blocks from Grace Breen in the second half to maintain our one-goal lead before a stunning curling effort into the top corner from Grace Bellwood doubled our advantage in the closing stages of the tie.

The hosts pulled a goal back in the first minute of stoppage time to create a nervy end to the contest, but we held on to secure our spot in the final eight of the competition – with a trip to London Bees up next.

Sabiha Jamal named a young squad that travelled to east London as four Under-16s were involved, including a start for midfielder Waris Deria, and four first years from the Under-19s group, but our youngsters stood up well against an experienced and seasoned senior side in the fourth tier of Women’s football.
