Description

James Maddison stepped up his recovery this week as he returned to full training during the halfway stage of pre-season at Hotspur Way.

Our number 10 has been working hard on his rehabilitation from a knee injury that ruled him out of the 2024/25 run-in, which culminated in us winning the Europa League in May.

Two months later, the key midfielder now has his sights set on a return to playing action after joining the rest of the group in a full session featuring possession-based games, the blocking drill and a fitness finisher as intensity ramps up.

Speaking in his first press conference last Friday (18 July), Thomas Frank said Madders was the 'closest one' of our injured players to making a comeback but wasn't quite ready to play in the 2-0 win at Reading in our pre-season opener last time out.

A week on, there are encouraging signs that the creative talent could get some minutes for the first time under our new Head Coach this weekend with two pre-season friendlies happening on Saturday in what is our final outing before departing for Tour.

Here are the latest images from Madders back in full training...

How to watch our pre-season double-header against Wycombe and Luton on Saturday - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

We've a feast of pre-season football for you on Saturday with the Men's First Team in action in two friendlies, and you can watch it all via SPURSPLAY - our video streaming platform.

SPURSPLAY is the home of our live and on-demand video content and the home of all of our pre-season matches this summer - including the first north London derby to take place outside of the UK when we face Arsenal in Hong Kong next week.

Having kicked-off with a 2-0 win at Reading last weekend, Thomas Frank will now lead us into two pre-season matches in a matter of hours!

First up, an additional encounter against League One side Wycombe Wanderers in a behind-closed-doors match at Hotspur Way, kicking-off 11am. Then, it's a quick trip up the M1 as we face Luton Town at Kenilworth Road, this one kicking-off at 3pm.

Thomas told us yesterday: "We wanted an extra game in our schedule to give as many players as many match minutes as possible, in order to put them in the best position, physically. We will play two even, strong teams and they will play between 60 and 75 minutes, maybe more. By the end of Saturday, 22 players will have played a lot of match minutes and they will be in a very good place before we go on tour."

We're pleased to confirm that the Wycombe match will be broadcast live on SPURSPLAY in addition to the Luton game. We'll be on air from Hotspur Way just before 11am before switching our focus to Kenilworth Road, with coverage of the second match scheduled to start at 2.30pm.

Here is our pre-season schedule...

Under-18s recover to draw with Cork City - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

Our Under-18s battled back from a 2-0 half-time deficit to draw 2-2 with Cork City Under-19s in Ireland on Wednesday afternoon.

In a training ground friendly at the Fota Island resort in Cork, where our youngsters are spending the week on a pre-season camp, we struggled to get to grips with the Irish side – who are in the midst of their league campaign – in the first period but produced a much-improved second-half display with goals in the final 12 minutes from Ronny Moncur and Under-16s striker Frankie Day ensuring honours ended even.

There were valuable match minutes for a number of first and second-year scholars in addition to several Under-16s players in what was a fiercely-contested rematch from two years ago, when our Under-18s previously crossed the water to take on their counterparts from the League of Ireland outfit.

The first half belonged largely to Cork. Goalkeeper Dylan Thompson produced a smart stop to deny Cillian Murphy after Finn Dalton’s drive was blocked early on, but it took our opponents less than 10 minutes to find a breakthrough as Jordan McCarthy converted Brody Lee’s cut-back from the left with a low drive across goal into the far corner. Five minutes later, it was 2-0 as Murphy collected the ball and drilled inside the near post on his left foot.

Our best attempt of the initial 45 minutes came just before the break as Cameron Thomas saw his goalbound effort charged down in a crowded penalty area but with a raft of changes made by both teams at the break, we took greater control of the game in the second half and went close to reducing the arrears mid-way through that period when Miracle Adewole accelerated beyond his marker down the left and teed up substitute Day for a fine shot that was tipped wide at the near post.

You sensed a goal was coming for us and we duly made the breakthrough on 78 minutes when impressive right-back Oscar Sandiford delivered a low centre which Moncur arrived onto and blasted through a crowded penalty area to find the net. Sandiford was involved again as we deservedly restored parity four minutes from time, picking out Moncur who duly played Day in to produce an emphatic finish from the left angle inside the box. That’s how it stayed, with the match serving as further preparation for the new Under-18 Premier League campaign following a pair of training ground friendlies against Leyton Orient (0-0) and Charlton Athletic (0-2) over the last two weekends.

‘It looked like it was coming in the second half’

“It was a really competitive game,” reflected Interim Under-18s Coach Joe Staunton. “Both teams were at different stages in their seasons – Cork were really strong in the first half and we struggled to break them down as effectively as we needed to but it was a better performance from our lads in the second period. It looked like it was coming in the second half and a couple of the boys who came into the game were able to affect the scoreline and be effective in the penalty box. They were two well-taken goals and two deserved goals based on the second-half performance.”

On the inclusion of the Under-16s players, who have also had a part to play throughout pre-season so far, Joe added: “Pre-season is always a brilliant opportunity for some of the younger players to get exposure to the Under-18s and to play against perhaps more physical opposition. All round, it’s an eye-opening opportunity for them to see what it could be like in the next year or so for them.”

Prior to our trip to Kenilworth Road to face League One side Luton Town at 3pm, we'll take on Wycombe Wanderers, also of League One, in a behind-closed-doors match at Hotspur Way, kick-off 11am.

The additional game has been arranged to allow Thomas Frank an opportunity to hand more match minutes to more players on Saturday. Both fixtures will be contested by the first team squad, with players divided into two groups to compete in the respective games.

Head Coach Thomas explained: "We wanted an extra game in our schedule to give as many players as many match minutes as possible, in order to put them in the best position, physically.

"We will play two even, strong teams and they will play between 60 and 75 minutes, maybe more.

"By the end of Saturday, 22 players will have played a lot of match minutes and they will be in a very good place before we go on tour."

Gunter shines, Yang makes debut in Under-21s' clash with Orient - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

Two late goals saw Leyton Orient retain the JE3 Foundation Trophy after a high-energy pre-season clash with our Under-21s at Brisbane Road on Tuesday night.

We'd stood firm for most of the game in the wake of the hosts' pressure with goalkeeper Luca Gunter producing a string of fine saves that led to him being applauded off when he was substituted 12 minutes from time.

Orient had restored their lead by that point after half-time substitute Tynan Thompson had earlier cancelled out Aaron Connolly's opener, while Diallang Jaiyesimi routinely nodded home a few minutes later to make sure the League One side maintained their grip on the silverware, which honours our late, legendary former defender and ex-Orient boss Justin Edinburgh while advocating the important work of the Foundation set up in his memory as they champion the installation of defibrillators in health and sports facilities around the country.

The match also saw the first on-pitch minutes in our colours for Yang Min-Hyeok. He played the first half on the left flank for us, joining the likes of Dane Scarlett, Jamie Donley, Will Lankshear and George Abbott - all of whom have trained with the first team this summer - in our starting XI. Both sides rang the changes after the break.
