Two underachieving giants of English football will collide in an all or nothing contest for silverware as Manchester United face Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final.

The Red Devils are currently experiencing their worst season of the Premier League era. The 20-time champions of England are languishing 16th after 37 matches with just 39 points across the campaign.

United have recorded a staggering 18 defeats in the league - which is four more than United managed in Alex Ferguson’s final three seasons in the Old Trafford dugout put together. They are also on course to finish in their lowest league position since relegation in 1973/74 and have regressed under Ruben Amorim since his arrival mid-season.

Meanwhile, Spurs are in 17th position with 38 points, which makes them the worst performing side outside the relegation places. The Lillywhites have suffered a club-record 20 defeats in the league and are heading for their worst league finish since relegation in 1977.

Both clubs can attribute some of their problems to injuries this season, but the pair have both managed to put their woes behind them with a string of excellent performances and results in Europe. One of these teams has the chance to end their dark season on a high with a trophy and Champions League qualification. While the other will end the season on a low note. Ahead of a highly-anticipated all–English final we take a look at the injury news from both teams.

Man Utd injury news

Diogo Dalot - doubt: Portuguese international Dalot faces a race against time to get fit for the Europa League final. He’s been out with a calf problem for a number of weeks and has missed the last four league matches.

Lenny Yoro - doubt: United have struggled with a series of injuries at the heart of their defence this term and it’s been a tricky campaign for Frenchman Yoro due to various injury issues. He’s currently nursing an ankle injury which is similar to the one he had at the start of the season, leaving him with a nervous race against time to gain fitness.

Matthijs de Ligt - doubt: Netherlands international de Ligt is a doubt for United’s showpiece clash with Spurs. He’s nursing a knee injury which is not thought to be a major issue but it was enough to rule him out for defeats to West Ham and Chelsea in recent weeks.

Jonny Evans - doubt: Defensive veteran Jonny Evans has only played six league matches this season and is currently nursing a muscular injury. It’s unlikely he’ll play if others are fit and available but he could still travel with the matchday squad.

Joshua Zirkzee - out: Former Bologna ace Joshua Zirkzee is yet to acclimatise to the demands of English football but has shown flashes of his best form in Europe. However, he’s been on the sidelines since suffering a thigh injury against Newcastle United and is not expected to be seen until pre-season.

Lisandro Martinez - out: Arguably the most costly injury of Ruben Amorim’s time at United so far. Argentine international and World Cup winner Lisandro Martinez is one of the best players at the club but has been missing since January with a serious ACL injury. He’s certain to miss the remainder of the season and is unlikely to feature again until the start of 2026.

Tottenham Hotspur injury news

Dejan Kulusevski - out: Swedish international Dejan Kulusevski misses out with a knee injury which is likely to need surgery. He’ll miss most of pre-season and is unlikely to return until August. A huge blow.

Radu Dragusin - out: The Romanian defender sustained a serious ACL injury which required an operation. He’s on the mend now but won’t be back in action until around December.

Dane Scarlett - out: Youngster Dane Scarlett has been nursing a groin problem for a large chunk of the year and is expected to have an operation. He’ll be targeting a return for pre-season.

James Maddison - out: England playmaker James Maddison has struggled with various different injuries throughout the campaign. The latest is a knee issue which rules him out until pre-season. It’s a devastating blow to the Lillywhites due to the former Leicester star’s creativity and goal threat.

Timo Werner - out: The former Chelsea forward, who won the Champions League in 2021, has been ruled out with a hamstring injury, marking the end of a frustrating season for the German.

Lucas Bergvall - out: Highly-rated youngster Lucas Bergvall misses out with an ankle problem in a big blow at the heart of the midfield.

Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur will do battle in the Europa League final on May 21, with the prize of the showpiece event not only silverware but a place in next season’s Champions League.

Arguably the Premier League’s two greatest underachievers of this season in the league, both clubs are set for their worst-ever Premier League finishes but will find some salvation in winning the trophy which has been their main focus for much of 2025.

For Ruben Amorim’s United, victory in Bilbao for the second time in a month could indicate the beginning of a new dawn and will undoubtedly give the Red Devils the best chance of strengthening in the summer transfer window.

It truly has been a miserable league season for the red half of Manchester, and players and fans alike will need to forget and move on over the summer if the Amorim era is to be a lasting one. Victory over Ange Postecoglou’s Spurs will go a long way to helping that.

Should United lose the final, it will be difficult to justify their position of 16th place in the Premier League table. For a club like Manchester United, simply reaching a final does not constitute a successful season, no matter how admirable their last-minute heroics against Lyon or dominant two-legged display against Athletic Club were - and everyone associated with the club knows it.

In addition, defeat would be devastating for Ineos and United’s financial situation, with the cost-cutting measures taken by the club to raise revenue in recent months well documented.

Opta makes their prediction for Europa League final

The experts at Opta have dusted off their simulation computer which has given its verdict on who is most likely to win the Europa League final on Wednesday - with United coming out on top by the narrowest of margins.

According to the prediction, where 10,000 simulations of the match were recorded, United won 50.7% of the time, with Spurs victorious on 49.3% of the occasions. This reflects how much this match is on a knife edge, with both clubs - and their managers - knowing all too well how important it is to win.

Opta has therefore named United favourites to win as they look to achieve silverware for the third consecutive season, while Spurs seek to win a first major trophy since 2008.

The North Londoners will take heart from their impressive record against the Red Devils this season, with three victories including a 3-0 drubbing at Old Trafford and an enthralling 4-3 EFL Cup quarter-final encounter. United haven’t beaten Spurs in six attempts, with their last victory coming in October 2022.

What both managers have said ahead of the final

Amorim admitted he knows the importance of victory in Bilbao: “I’m stressed already because of the final. If we don’t do it, then it means nothing. But we’re happy to be there, so let’s see.

“It's going to be a big final and we will try to win. It's hard to describe what it's like to be manager of this club, and you want to give the supporters something, because we were so disappointing in the Premier League. It's the least we can do for these fans, for the support they have given us in this tough season.”

Meanwhile, Postecoglou hit back at claims the final means more to his side than to United.

"What do I care what Man United think? Why is that relevant to me?" he said. "You know better than me, you’ve followed this club more than I have. What do you think a trophy would do for this club?

"People are fearing that it might actually happen. They're trying to tear it down and diminish it and try to compare us to Man United."

Manchester United have been handed an injury boost ahead of their Europa League final against Tottenham Hotspur next week. United prepared for the final with a 1-0 defeat against Chelsea on Friday night, though it was a performance that offered encouragement to head coach Ruben Amorim.

The United head coach made five changes from the side that lost to West Ham United as he looked to retain match sharpness and manage minutes for the clash with Spurs. United also took the chance to rest some key players, with Mason Mount, Casemiro, Bruno Fernandes and Luke Shaw replaced in the second half.

It also allowed other players an opportunity to make a case for a role in the final, while a defender made his long-awaited return from injury, in what was a fresh boost to Amorim. Here is a look at the latest injury news ahead of the Tottenham clash next week.

Ayden Heaven makes injury return

Manchester United were given a fitness boost when defender Ayden Heaven made an appearance from the bench in the 1-0 defeat to Chelsea on Friday night. The 18-year-old has been sidelined through injury since he was stretched off in the victory over Leicester before the March international break.

Heaven has made five competitive appearances since he joined from Arsenal at the start of the year and it was a shock to see him involved at Stamford Bridge. The teenage centre-back did not train with the United squad in midweek but was back in the first team two days later for their defeat to Chelsea.

It is unlikely Heaven will start for United against Tottenham Hotspur in Bilbao next week, but he will hope to have a place on the bench for the match after he stepped up his injury return. Taking to social media on Saturday afternoon, Heaven addressed his return to action. "Felt so good to be back...onto the final in Bilbao," he wrote on Instagram.

His return to action is a huge boost to Ruben Amorim at a time when Matthijs de Ligt and Leny Yoro are both injured and could miss the trip to Bilbao. United take part in their final pre-match training session at Carrington on Tuesday before they fly to Spain later in the day.

Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur have both made key changes to their starting line ups as they play their final Premier League matches ahead of the Europa League final. United face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Friday night while Aston Villa host Spurs at Villa Park.

The two sides will hope to build some momentum with a win tonight, though the main hope will be to avoid any fresh injury setbacks before the defining match in their respective seasons. United lost Leny Yoro to injury in their home defeat to West Ham last weekend, while Spurs saw Dejan Kulusevski limp out of their loss to Crystal Palace.

Ruben Amorim and Ange Postecoglou will hope to avoid similar scenarios this weekend though they have both named strong starting line ups for their respective matches. Here is all the confirmed team news and how it could impact the Europa League final.

Manchester United and Tottenham make line up changes

Tottenham have made three changes from their recent defeat to Crystal Palace, with Son Heung-min back in the starting line-up after a month out with injury. Sergio Reguilon and Mickey Moore both also start, while Pedro Porro and Rodrigo Bentancur have been named on the bench. Spurs are certain to be without Radu Dragusin, James Maddison, Lucas Bergvall and Dejan Kulusevski for the final and Ange Postecoglou has looked to avoid any unnecessary risks with his selection.

It is a similar case for Ruben Amorim, who has made five changes to his Manchester United line up for their clash with Chelsea on Friday night. Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro have been selected in midfield together, while Amad Diallo and Mason Mount play behind Rasmus Hojlund in attack.

Tottenham XI vs Aston Villa: Kinsky, Reguilon, Danso, Davies, Spence, Gray, Moore, Sarr, Odobert, Son, Tel. Subs: Vicario, Bissouma, Richarlison, Solanke, Johnson, Porro, Bentancur, Cassanova, Olusesi.

Manchester United are sweating over the fitness of Leny Yoro and Matthijs de Ligt ahead of their Europa League final clash with Tottenham Hotspur next week. United have one eye on their trip to Bilbao but first travel to face Chelsea in the Premier League fixture on Friday night.

Ruben Amorim does not expect to welcome any injured stars back for their trip to Stamford Bridge, but has not ruled out the possibility of them being available to face Spurs on Wednesday night. It leaves the United head coach with a dilemma this weekend as he looks to manage player fitness levels and also retain match sharpness.

United were without six injured players when they trained at Carrington on Wednesday morning, and here is a look at all the latest injury news and the potential return dates of their stars ahead of a crucial week.

Manchester United latest injury news

Toby Collyer - 16 May vs Chelsea (A)

Collyer took part in United's open training session in midweek and could be named in the squad to face Chelsea on Friday night.

Leny Yoro - 21 May vs Tottenham (N)

Yoro was spotted undergoing gym work on Wednesday morning and is unlikely to be match fit to face Tottenham. There is still a slim chance he could be named on the bench.

Matthijs de Ligt - 21 May vs Tottenham (N)

De Ligt has missed the last two matches due to injury and will not be in the squad to face Chelsea tonight. United will hope to have him back for the Europa League final, but he won't be fit enough to start.

Diogo Dalot - 21 May vs Tottenham (N)

Dalot is doing everything possible to be fit enough for a place in the Europa League final squad. He took part in an individual training session in midweek and is another who could be named on the bench vs Spurs.

Ayden Heaven - 25 May vs Aston Villa

Heaven was not involved in the club's open training session in midweek, and there is no need to rush him back when he is unlikely to feature anyway. He could be back against Villa or for the post-season tour.

Joshua Zirkzee - Unknown

Zirkzee was ruled out for the remainder of the season after a hamstring injury. It is unclear whether he will be available for the post-season tour of Asia.

Lisandro Martinez - Unknown

Martinez is a long-term injury concern after he underwent successful ACL surgery earlier in the year. There is still no timeframe on when he might be available again.

Ruben Amorim has suggested he will name a strong side to face Chelsea in the Premier League on Friday night as he looks to retain match sharpness ahead of the Europa League final against Tottenham Hotspur.

United travel to Stamford Bridge this weekend before they face Spurs in Bilbao next Wednesday night. A few players will be rested entirely to ensure they do not aggravate previous injury issues, though several will be given a run-out to get them up to speed for the massive final.

It means the likes of Noussair Mazraoui, Amad Diallo, and Rasmus Hojlund might not be risked from the start of the match, but those who didn't start against West Ham could return to the side. Here is how we think United should line up against Chelsea.

Ruben Amorim has suggested he will play a strong Manchester United side in their final Premier League match before the Europa League final. United travel to face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Friday night before they face Tottenham Hotspur in Bilbao next Wednesday night.

United won't take any unnecessary risks with their team selection for the league encounter, though Amorim also wants to retain match sharpness ahead of their most important match of the season. United are currently 16th in the Premier League but could redeem their campaign if they secure Champions League qualification with victory over Spurs.

Amorim plans to give several key players minutes against Chelsea, though he has hinted that certain individuals will be rested to avoid injury risks. United last played against West Ham on Sunday afternoon, and it would represent a 10-day gap for any player not involved tomorrow night.

Manchester United line up vs Chelsea

Speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of the trip to face Chelsea in the Premier League, Ruben Amorim reiterated the best preparation for the Europa League final would be to win at Stamford Bridge. It could be viewed as a controversial policy by some supporters, after Tottenham Hotspur lost star forward Dejan Kulusevski to injury in their dead-rubber defeat to Crystal Palace last weekend.

"The best way is to face the game like we should face the game, it is to win the game, we need to perform, to win points in Premier League and that is the feeling," he told reporters. "We talk about that after West Ham. We need to improve in the way we face competitions and stay focused in every moment of the game. Against West Ham we had clear situations to score, in the first situation they have, they score. These details matter. The only way I know how to prepare a final is, in the normal game for our league, we must play the same way as a final.

"We have to try to recover, the best thing to prepare the final is to play the game and then the players have to understand if you play or don’t play against Chelsea, it means nothing to the final. That is important. I am just preparing the game of Chelsea. That is my focus. We want to win and we want to perform."

When asked how close the Manchester United starting line up tomorrow night would be to the one that will face Tottenham next week, he added: "I don’t know. I know the starting 11 I am thinking for Chelsea and then I will see. Even the way we play there against Chelsea I will see it and it will be important for the next one.

"Again, it is going to be a massive part this game to the next one, so we need to perform and they need to perform, that is an important thing. Then we are going to the same way if there is a player that can get an injury and is not recover for this game who would put him at risk of the final he will not play but if it is not that situation, he will have a lot of time to recover. We cannot spend eight or nine days without a game before the final, that is a bad thing for the final. We will prepare for the game."

Five Manchester United players missed their open training session ahead of their Europa League final against Tottenham Hotspur next week. Ruben Amorim's side will look to save their season with Champions League qualification, but might have to do so without a quartet of injured defenders and a forward.

United took part in an open training session at Carrington on Wednesday morning, and there were several notable absentees from the first-team squad. Matthijs de Ligt was not involved after his recent injury scare, while Diogo Dalot was involved in an individual session with a fitness coach.

There was also no sign of Leny Yoro after he limped out of their weekend home defeat to West Ham United. Ayden Heaven was also not spotted in the training session, and Joshua Zirkzee is still sidelined despite his hopes of returning to the squad vs Spurs in Bilbao next Wednesday night.

Manchester United confirmed squad members for open training

Ruben Amorim included plenty of Manchester United youngsters in the latest training squad as they stepped up their preparations for the Europa League final against Tottenham Hotspur next week.

Academy defenders Tyler Fredricson, Sam Murray, Jaydan Kamason, Godwill Kukonki and James Overy too part in the session amid the absences of four senior options. There should be a clearer indication of who might be involved in the Europa League final from the squad that travels to face Chelsea in the Premier League on Friday night.

Onana, Bayindir, Heaton, Mee, Amass, Dorgu, Evans, Lindelof, Maguire, Shaw, Mazraoui, Casemiro, Collyer, Eriksen, Fernandes, Mainoo, Mount, Ugarte, Amad, Garnacho, Hojlund, Chido, Fredricson, Murray, Kamason, Kukonki, Fletcher, Thwaites, Overy, Kone, Scanlon, Wheatley, Musa.

Manchester United are preparing for their final away game of the Premier League campaign as they head to Stamford Bridge to face a Chelsea side competing with Manchester City for a place in the top five.

The Red Devils sit 16th in the table and can only reach 45 points as they stare down their worst-ever finish and points total in the Premier League era. They were beaten 2-0 by West Ham United at Old Trafford on Sunday.

However, Amorim and his side still have the opportunity to rescue their season as they prepare for the Europa League final. It will be an all-English affair as they take on Tottenham Hotspur in Bilbao on Wednesday, May 21. Spurs have had an equally-bad league campaign but one of the top-flight outfits will play Champions League football next season.

United face Chelsea on Friday night after drawing 1-1 with the Blues at Old Trafford earlier in the season. Tottenham are also in action on Friday as they take on Aston Villa.

Can Ruben Amorim rest his entire team against Chelsea?

With United not at threat of relegation, their final placing or points tally in the league is largely irrelevant. Their campaign hinges on the Europa League final and it could mean that Amorim makes several changes against Chelsea.

Amorim is entitled to completely rotate his starting XI and rest key players. That has not always been the case. Blackpool were fined £25,000 during the 2010-11 campaign for rotating 10 of their starting XI, as the Premier League felt they had intentionally fielded a weakened team.

The rule to stop teams rotating heavily was established to ensure that the competition was a level playing field so that clubs were facing the strongest sides from each team. For example, Chelsea could get an easy ride against United on Friday as they go for Champions League football next season - as could Villa when they face a potentially-rotated Spurs XI.

"You are allowed to have 25 players," said legendary United boss Sir Alex Ferguson when asked about Blackpool’s fine at the time. "They ask you to name them. They don't ask you to name your 11 and 14 substitutes. The rules are there."

Ruben Amorim entitled to rotate how he pleases after rule change

At the end of the 2010/11 season, clubs agreed to modify the rules that would allow teams to rotate more.

A spokesman for the Premier League said at the time: "The clubs voted at the last Premier League Annual General Meeting to modify the rule regarding clubs fielding full strength teams (E.20). From 2011/12 onwards the rule will allow any combination of players included in a club's 25-man squad list to be selected for a Premier League fixture.

"The 25-man squad rules do allow clubs to pick Under-21 players beyond those named in their squad list and, with this in mind, it was agreed by the clubs that it was appropriate for the rule to remain in place in order to ensure the integrity of the competition."

It means that Amorim can select whoever he pleases from his squad against Chelsea, along with some Under-21s players but this must be done within reason as the rules would not allow Amorim to field a team full of United’s Under-21s side but several could get the nod.

Underperforming Premier League heavyweights Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur will collide in the first all-English Europa League final in six years.

The Red Devils are aiming to win the competition for the second time in their history, with their last triumph in the competition coming under Jose Mourinho in 2017. United last reached the final in 2021 but were beaten by Villarreal on penalties.

Meanwhile, Spurs are aiming to secure their third Europa League trophy. The Lillywhites won the competition when it was formerly known as the UEFA Cup back in 1984 by triumphing on penalties against Belgian side Anderlecht after two legs. The capital side also won the inaugural edition of the competition by beating Wolves in 1972.

United are looking to win silverware for the third consecutive season and have hopes of edging closer to Liverpool in the all-time list of trophies won by English football clubs. Meanwhile Spurs are chasing their first honour since winning the League Cup in 2008.

The highly-anticipated match acts as a straight shoot-out for Champions League qualification with the winner earning the final seat at Europe’s elite table next season. It also acts as a big boost in terms of financial fair play and attracting the very best players to sign in the summer.

But what is the monetary value of winning the Europa League and just how significant is this contest for both clubs?

How much do teams earn by playing in the Europa League?

Every team that made the League Phase of the Europa League automatically received £3.6million each for simply qualifying for that stage of UEFA's secondary competition.

United finished eighth last season and were forced to wait until after the season ended to secure their place. They did so by beating local rivals Manchester City in the FA Cup final at Wembley Stadium.

Spurs secured qualification by finishing fifth in the league and ultimately finished just two points behind Aston Villa in the Champions League race.

Each win in the league phase handed a club a £379,201 boost, and each draw would see a reward of £126,400 be given out. Those that automatically qualified for the knockout rounds received £505,000 on top of those earnings. United finished third with five wins and three draws while Spurs were closely behind them in fourth with five wins, two draws and one defeat.

Progression in each knockout round increased gradually with United and Spurs both receiving a total of £7.12m for reaching the semi-final. Adding the prize money so far from wins and progressing, United’s prize money so far stands at around £9.3m.

How much will Man Utd earn if they win the Europa League?

The Red Devils and Tottenham are battling to win the maximum reward of £10.95m for winning the Europa League. The losing finalist will also be entitled to £5.9m for their efforts. It means United’s prize money could surpass £20m if they are victorious in Bilbao.

The winner of the Europa League earns approximately half the amount of teams that go all the way in the Champions League.

Champions League winners claim £21.1m for victory in the final while even runners-up receive £15m which is significantly higher than what comes for winning the Europa League final. Therefore the incentive is not just the prize money but the prestige of qualifying for the Champions League which comes the following season.

With clubs performing so poorly in the league and being out of contention to play in any form of Europe, it’s pivotal for both to come out on top in this year’s final in Basque, not just from a trophy perspective but also in terms of revenue and financial fair play.
