Tottenham have prioritised addressing their defensive problems in this summer transfer window.
Tottenham Hotspur chiefs must build a squad that is tailored to Roberto De Zerbi’s philosophy and tactical needs.
On Friday afternoon, Spurs announced their first signing of the summer transfer window in the form of Andy Robertson. The experienced Scot has joined the Lilywhites on a free transfer after his contract at Liverpool expired. He arrives in North London following a glittering nine-year career at Anfield, where the left-back won several major honours.
After Robertson’s acquisition, it is only a matter of time before Marcos Senesi’s arrival at Tottenham is confirmed, with the parties having reached a total verbal agreement. The Argentina international is now a free agent after his deal with Bournemouth came to an end. Snapping the 29-year-old up on a potential free transfer would represent another shrewd piece of business for Tottenham.
It is no secret by now that Spurs have prioritised fixing their defensive woes over other areas. While Senesi’s deal is in the pipeline, the N17 bosses want to add more to their central defensive unit. The North Londoners have already seen a bid for Brighton and Hove Albion star Jan Paul van Hecke rejected. Spurs have agreed personal terms with the Dutchman and are understood to be formulating a second bid for the defender.
Toby Alderweireld gives verdict on Tottenham targets Marcos Senesi and Jan Paul van Hecke
Former Tottenham star Toby Alderweireld has now given his verdict on Tottenham’s central defensive targets Marcos Senesi and Jan Paul van Hecke. The 2019 Champions League finalist feels the duo’s Premier League experience is important, which would help Spurs get some much-needed stability after the disastrous last campaign.
“They both know the Premier League. That’s good, because I think Spurs now need stability,” Toby Alderweireld said in an exclusive interview with Football London.
“They need to know the players can perform every week, week in, week out. They perform at a good level. Of course, a transfer to a new club, it’s always a bit different, but they know the Premier League, and that’s very important.
“Because next season, it’s impossible that we go back to this [awful] period. So, I think it’s understanding that they are looking for players who are proven in the Premier League. That’s something they should do. They should have a little bit more security in that.”
Senesi and Van Hecke would help tighten up the screws at the back
Senesi and Van Hecke are Premier League proven commodities, which, ideally, should help them hit the ground running at Spurs.
As far as Senesi is concerned, the 29-year-old is coming on the back off an impressive campaign at Bournemouth, helping the south coast club clinch Europa League qualification. The South American defender featured in 37 of 38 Premier League games, chipping in with five assists. Despite a strong season at the Vitality Stadium, he has been unfortunate to miss out on a place in the Argentina squad for the World Cup.
