Back in action for the first time since their 2026 World Cup campaign, Uruguay were under new stewardship with former Manchester United and Atletico Madrid striker Diego Forlan having taken the reins following Marcelo Bielsa's departure in the summer.
That new era dawned in Rifu, Japan, as Uruguay stepped out to face Japan in a friendly at the Miyagi Stadium but that first outing ended in disappointment as their hosts ran out 3-1 winners.
Rodrigo was named captain for the game - just the second time he has taken the armband for his nation in his career - and he played 79 minutes before being substituted. It was his 77th appearance for his country.
