Tottenham are planning a major squad rebuild under Roberto De Zerbi.
Not much more could have gone wrong for Tottenham Hotspur over the course of the past season, with them getting dragged into another relegation battle. Roberto De Zerbi arrived at the club over the March international break with the immediate task of keeping Spurs safe in the top flight.
The Italian tactician succeeded in his mission of keeping Tottenham in the Premier League at the expense of West Ham United, who went down despite beating Leeds United 3-0 at home on the final day of the campaign.
Back-to-back 17th-placed finishes means sweeping improvements in several areas of the pitch are needed at White Hart Lane. A whole host of changes from top to bottom are being demanded by the fans after another terribly bad domestic campaign. Club legend Glenn Hoddle believes the Europa League success during the 2025/26 campaign helped paper over the cracks, but there was no chance of it this time around.
Danny Murphy backs Tottenham to do well under Roberto De Zerbi next season
In a season where Spurs were expected to build on their Europa League success, they ended up narrowly avoiding Championship football. False promises, a lack of investment in the squad, injury problems and a chaotic managerial circle resulted in another forgettable domestic campaign for the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium faithful.
Over the summer, De Zerbi will be looking to build something special in North London after achieving his initial objective of keeping Spurs in the division. The lack of European football may work in his favour as it will allow the 46-year-old and his coaching staff to spend more time with the group on the training pitches to understand the nitty-gritty of his system.
Now, talkSPORT pundit Danny Murphy has revealed where he thinks Tottenham will finish in the Premier League. He has praised De Zerbi for doing a good job after stepping into the club during the most turbulent period, organising the team well and giving the players confidence. The Englishman has backed his former club to finish in the top half under De Zerbi next season.
“I’d be gobsmacked if they didn’t. I mean, um, he definitely got them organised, gave them a bit of consistency in the personnel, the tactics. They didn’t change that very much at all. They played with more intensity generally. They didn’t jump levels in quality because the confidence was so low,” Danny Murphy said on the talkSPORT show.
“You got that squad should never be in a relegation battle. They have had injuries, but I can’t see them having a problem. I think they’ll finish top half.”
De Zerbi has to be backed properly
ENIC, along with the likes of Vinai Venkatesham and Johan Lange, is very well aware of the massive summer they are facing. Staying up was the goal under De Zerbi, and after it has been achieved, our fans want to see a big improvement on the pitch. That all starts with a proper recruitment strategy.
