Leeds United captain Ethan Ampadu has led by example this season. The same cannot be said of Spurs’ Cristian Romero.

The Whites’ survival from relegation this season has come down to so many factors going our way. That stems from player performance, Daniel Farke’s work as manager, to other clubs being hapless for months.

However, one thing that Farke has always instilled ever since he was appointed has been a sense of togetherness. Side before self, every time.

Ethan Ampadu guides Leeds United to safety and earns Player of the Season

You can name several individuals at this club and point to their vital impact on our survival bid this season. There’s one that stands above the rest in this squad, though: captain Ethan Ampadu.

It’s been a season where United knew from minute one that unity was a non-negotiable. And, having one of our best captains in recent history at the thick of it was crucial.

His contribution is being appreciated outside of LS11. But, better than that is Ampadu earning the club’s Player of the Season and Players’ Player of the Season prizes.

Voted by fans and his peers, Ampadu has been seen as the main reason why this season has been so successful. It’s a fitting summary that the hard-hitting yet classy skipper was cleaning up on award night.

Spurs’ club captain contrast proves why Leeds United are safe – Cristian Romero jets back to Argentina this week

The fans aren’t fond of the squad. And, it’s not hard to see why after performances for the past two seasons.

‘Leading’ the way towards Spurs’ potential oblivion has been captain Cristian Romero. A World Cup winner and undoubtedly elite centre-back when he can be bothered, he’s been a key culprit this season in Spurs’ demise.

However, a heartbreaking knee injury means he’s not featured since Roberto De Zerbi’s first game – a 1-0 loss at Sunderland.

Still, you’d expect that your club captain is still showing up and inspiring the group. Well, no.

Instead, Romero won’t be in attendance for Spurs’ final game of the season at home on Sunday against Everton. He’s back in Argentina, planning to watch boyhood club Belgrano take on River Plate in a league title decider.

De Zerbi has explained that Spurs medical staff have allowed Romero to head back to Argentina to complete rehab on his injury. But, to not be in attendance when his club need all the support they can get, is nothing short of disgraceful.

When your captain is setting a tone like that, no wonder they’re the side facing possible relegation. And, it shows why Leeds are nowhere to be seen in that conversation on the final day. Ethan Ampadu could never.
