Leeds United take on Tottenham this evening, with the Whites’ Premier League status already secured for next season.
Danny Murphy recently argued that Spurs are the favourites ahead of the pivotal game at the bottom of the table, with Daniel Farke’s men having already achieved what they set out to do at the start of the season.
Alan Pardew seemingly disagreed when previewing the game in his own right, arguing that United being safe may give them a newfound freedom ahead of their trip to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Leeds United players given major financial incentive ahead of Tottenham clash
That said, supporters do not have to worry about United being on the beach already for tonight’s game. The Leeds players having a significant financial incentive to play for tonight, according to a report from The Athletic.
Nottingham Forest’s 1-1 draw with Newcastle and Crystal Palace’s draw with Everton ensured both leapfrogged Leeds in the league. Forest now sit in 15th place on goal difference with United having a game in hand.
This may seem insignificant to supporters, who will just be happy to see their side sit outside of the bottom three. But, Beren Cross’ recent article suggests that this will be something that the Leeds players will be paying close attention to.
The report states that “there are significant squad bonuses on the line for the higher Leeds can finish.” If Farke’s men were to finish 17th or 16th, a bonus of £2.5million would be shared equally.
If the Whites finish 15th, this amount rises to £3million. And, if they finish 14th, this amount rises even further to £3.5million.
Furthermore, Chris Weatherspoon, The Athletic’s football finance writer, posted a picture of the club’s financial statements on X. It confirms that retention of Leeds’ Premier League status may also incur total bonuses payable of £39,454,389 to both players and management, conditional on their performance.
Leeds United centre-back Joe Rodon will be keen to impress against Tottenham
One player, who regardless on financial incentives will be eager to impress against Spurs will be Joe Rodon.
The Welsh defender spent four years at Tottenham between 2020 and 2024. But, he only managed to make 15 Premier League appearances for them after being loaned out first to Rennes before joining us on loan in the Championship during the 2023/24 campaign.
Fast forward to today, and the 28-year-old has been a colossus for United ever since arriving in West Yorkshire. Now, Spurs may be regretting the decision to let the defender leave, given their troubles in recent seasons.
Rodon has been an integral part of our success this season, adapting brilliantly to his new wide-centre back role as part of the back three.
Undoubtedly, Rodon will want to make an impression against his former employers after proving beyond all doubt that he is a Premier League-calibre centre-half.
Hopefully, for those making the trip down south, the defender can add to his tally of two Premier League goals this season to further rub salt in Tottenham’s wounds.
