European competitions had provided some solace for troubled Tottenham during the past two seasons – at least until Tuesday's trip to Atletico Madrid.

Having won the 2024-25 Europa League, Spurs finished a creditable fourth in this term's Champions League standings.

But Igor Tudor's men were torn apart by Atletico, who raced into a 4-0 lead inside 22 minutes on their way to a 5-2 victory in the last-16 first leg.

Tudor's reign has been more reminiscent of Liz Truss than Elizabeth I and things are unlikely to improve against Liverpool at Anfield.

Spurs have won two of their 20 league matches since the start of November, picking up just two points from their last nine.

They have conceded at least twice in all nine of those games and travel to Anfield without a dozen senior players including first-choice centre-backs Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero.

Van de Ven is suspended after his red card in last week's damaging 3-1 home defeat to Crystal Palace.

And ill discipline also cost Tottenham in December's reverse fixture against Liverpool, who clung on for a 2-1 victory after Xavi Simons and Romero were sent off for their hosts.

Liverpool remain hard to trust away from home, having lost 2-1 at Wolves in the Premier League and 1-0 at Galatasaray in the Champions League in the past couple of weeks.

But they thumped West Ham 5-2 in their most recent home fixture and Tottenham's last four visits to Anfield ended in 4-3, 4-2, 4-0 and 5-1 defeats.

The Reds also won 6-3 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium last season so splitting stakes between 4-1 and 4-2 home wins could be profitable in the correct-score market.

Liverpool had 4-1 home victories over Barnsley in the FA Cup and Newcastle in the Premier League in January while Tottenham lost both of this season's derbies against Arsenal by that scoreline.

Spurs's attacking unit is in far better shape than their defence but it is hard to see them snapping their six-game losing streak.

Gravenberch poses an underrated attacking threat at Anfield

Tottenham have conceded 18 goals in those six defeats so Liverpool midfielder Ryan Gravenberch should have licence to get forward and threaten the Spurs goal.

Three of the Dutchman's four league goals this season came at Anfield and he has had at least two shots in five of his last seven home games in the top flight.

Dangerous forwards should test Danso's discipline

With Van de Ven and Romero missing, Kevin Danso and Radu Dragusin are set to start for Tottenham, either in a back four or a three-man defence.

Danso received a yellow card in the final ten minutes against Atletico but he may struggle to stay out of trouble for long at Anfield, having been booked four times in 752 minutes of Premier League action this term.
