Tottenham and Chelsea had contrasting fortunes in the EFL Cup in midweek as Spurs were knocked out at Newcastle while the Blues booked their spot in the quarter-final with a win at Wolves.

Attention now turns to Premier League matters and Spurs, who started the weekend in third, will be hoping to put their dreadful recent record against London rivals Chelsea firmly behind them at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Tottenham vs Chelsea preview

Injuries and inconsistencies have been an early theme in the season of London rivals Tottenham and Chelsea but Spurs have managed matters better in the first quarter of the campaign.

Thomas Frank’s side, despite continually being held back by absentees, started the weekend in third and within five points of leaders Arsenal following last Sunday’s convincing 3-0 win at Everton.

However, Spurs have picked up 13 of their 17 points on their travels and have looked much happier away from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, where they have been beaten by Aston Villa and Bournemouth and held to a draw by winless Wolves.

A 2-0 defeat at Newcastle on Wednesday quashed their EFL Cup dreams and a record of nine losses in their last 11 clashes with Chelsea may have some Spurs supporters fearing the worst.

But Chelsea are only ninth after as many matches, having won just four times, and last Saturday’s 2-1 loss at home to new boys Sunderland further highlighted that they remain a work in progress following Enzo Maresca’s summer revamp.

The absence of talismanic figure Cole Palmer continues to hurt but ill discipline and a disjointed defence are problems that persist and they have kept only two clean sheets in their last 11 matches.

Chelsea came through a chaotic cup tie at Wolves on Wednesday, triumphing 4-3 despite racing into a 3-0 half-time lead, and that means that both teams to score and over 2.5 goals has been a winning bet in nine of their last 11 matches.

Spurs had recorded back-to-back clean sheets against Monaco and Everton before midweek’s defeat at Newcastle but that was more down to the keeping heroics of Guglielmo Vicario, who may find it tougher keeping out a Chelsea side who have hit 15 goals in their last five matches.

Cucurella collecting cards

Chelsea left-back Marc Cucurella was booked for the fourth time in his last eight matches in Wednesday’s thrilling 4-3 win at Wolves and another booking could come his way as he lines up against the tricky Mohammed Kudus, .

The fiery Spaniard was cautioned on last season’s trip to Tottenham - a 4-3 win - and he will know that he is in for a stern test against Kudus, who has drawn eight fouls in nine league appearances.

London rivals could see red

There has been no love lost in this fixture in recent times and last season’s two league meetings combined to feature a total of 15 cards.

When the teams met at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the 2023-24 campaign, Spurs saw red cards dished out to Cristian Romero and Destiny Udogie. Chelsea have been ill disciplined this term with five players sent off in their 14 games.

Tottenham vs Chelsea Bet Builder

Both teams to score

Both teams have scored in ten of Chelsea's last 13 matches and the high-scoring trend should continue at Tottenham.

Over 4.5 cards

Four of the last five meetings between these sides have featured five or more cards and it should be another feisty London derby.

Enzo Fernandez to score or assist

Chelsea's World Cup-winning midfielder has four goals and one assists in 13 appearances and remains on penalty duty in Cole Palmer's absence.

Description

Just three points separate Tottenham in third and ninth-placed Chelsea in the Premier League, and the London rivals clash in what should be a hotly contested Saturday affair.

Chelsea were shock 2-1 losers to Sunderland last Saturday, while Spurs were dumped out of the EFL Cup by Newcastle on Wednesday, meaning both will have a point to prove at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium – with goals sure to flow as a result.

Paddy Power are offering new customers 50-1 for a goal to be scored in Saturday's Premier League showdown, which will be broadcast live on Sky Sports Premier League at 5.30pm.

Keep reading for details on how to claim your bonus, all the T&Cs, and a handy guide to creating a Paddy Power account.

Tottenham vs Chelsea betting offer: get 50-1 for a goal to be scored

Thomas Frank's excellent start as Tottenham manager has resulted in 17 points in nine league games and they are improving as an attacking unit week on week, scoring 12 goals while losing just one of their last six Premier League matches.

In Mohammed Kudus, Xavi Simons and Brennan Johnson, they have a number of creative players who can find the net and they will fancy their chances against a Chelsea side who have managed just two clean sheets in 11 games.

The Blues narrowly beat Wolves 4-3 in the EFL Cup on Tuesday and have conceded five goals across their last two matches, which suggests they desperately need to improve on the defensive end.

That being said, Enzo Maresca has more than enough talent at his disposal to simply outscore teams, with Chelsea scoring 16 goals while winning five of their last six games.

With so much firepower in each squad and the pair's last six meetings producing 21 goals, it seems likely another thriller is on the cards this weekend.

Tottenham are unbeaten in their last seven games and will be aiming for another three points when taking on improving Aston Villa at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The Lilywhites signed off for the break with a hard-fought 2-1 victory at Leeds, but they will be wary of the Villans, who are chasing a fifth straight success.

Tottenham vs Aston Villa preview

Tottenham have stayed close to the early pace in the Premier League title race but they haven't won a top flight home match since the opening week of the campaign and could be frustrated by fast improving Aston Villa, who are heading to the capital on a four-game winning streak.

Thomas Frank is a demanding manager but he must be pretty content with his early work with Tottenham, who have taken 14 points from seven league games.

However, Frank's team are far from the finished article and they turned in some underwhelming performances in the period leading up to the October break.

Joao Palhinha's superb injury-time strike was needed to rescue a fortunate 1-1 draw at home to Wolves, who had taken complete control in the second half.

And a 2-2 draw was somehow salvaged from the Champions League matchday two trip to Bodo/Glimt, who bossed proceedings for the opening two thirds of the contest and could have been out of sight had they been more precise with their finishing.

Spurs raised their level for the 2-1 win at Leeds a fortnight ago, but were still second-best on the possession and shot statistics and needed the assistance of deflections for both of their goals.

Picking up results without playing particularly well can be an art in itself and there is little doubt that Spurs are tougher to play against with Palhinha stiffening up the midfield and key defenders Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven featuring in every Premier League game.

But Tottenham's Premier League expected-goals figures of 8.14 for and 8.86 against speak of a team who will struggle to maintain an average of two points per game unless their performances improve.

Villa's xG figures of 6.95 for and 10.49 against are even less flattering but there has been a positive recent trend in performances and results.

Unai Emery's side have won four on the bounce for the first time since April and will be targeting another strong month as they continue to compete on various fronts.

The Midlands side remain winless on their Premier League travels but they showed up well when goals from Emi Buendia and John McGinn handed them a 2-0 victory away to Feyenoord on Europa League matchday two.

Villa have won on two of the last three visits to Tottenham in he league but have not beaten a top-half team since the start of the campaign and may be content to take a point this weekend.

Palhinha could pick up a card

Tottenham have had a better balanced midfield thanks to the loan signing of Joao Palhinha. However, the 30-year-old takes some risks with his tackling and he could see yellow for a third successive Premier League game.

Close contest could see the points shared

Tottenham and Aston Villa have not shared the points since a 1-1 draw at Villa Park in 2012. However, they look like fairly evenly-matched sides and could be tough to separate this weekend.

Tottenham vs Aston Villa Bet Builder

Morgan Rogers to score or assist

Rogers has been doing his best work in an England shirt but he can come up with a major contribution at Tottenham.

Mohammed Kudus to commit over 1.5 fouls

Kudus is one of Tottenham's liveliest attackers but he also works hard off the ball and has committed 12 fouls in seven league appearances.

Under 3.5 goals

Villa's last seven away games and have generated a total of just ten goals and the low-scoring trend is likely to go on.

Leeds vs Tottenham preview

Draws for Tottenham were few and far between during the Ange Postecoglou era but Spurs have already shared the spoils four times in ten matches under Thomas Frank and they may have to settle for another point at a hostile Elland Road.

Eleven points from six Premier League games, which is headlined by a 2-0 victory at Manchester City, yields a happy return for Frank, but recent performances have underwhelmed and Spurs are lacking rhythm in the final third.

Tottenham needed an injury-time equaliser from unlikely source Joao Palhinha at home to rock-bottom Wolves last weekend and they were largely second-best in Tuesday’s 2-2 draw at Bodo/Glimt, who led 2-0 with little over 20 minutes to play but were punished for some slack finishing.

Frank, having won his opening Champions League game 1-0 at home to Villarreal, had the luxury of being able to ring the changes in the Arctic Circle with Palhinha, Mohammed Kudus, Xavi Simons, Cristian Romero and Destiny Udogie all protected from the off.

That should allow the Dane to freshen things up, but his side also needed to come from two goals behind to rescue a point in their last away league trip to Brighton and Leeds have shown that they are tough to pass at their home fortress.

Daniel Farke’s side lost only once at home in last season’s Championship-winning campaign and a 1-0 win win over Everton has been built on by draws with Newcastle and Bournemouth at Elland Road.

The Cherries played Tottenham off the park in a 1-0 win on the road so there is substance to that form and, with neither side at their fluid best in attack, a stalemate may provide the value.

Card calls for aggressive Ampadu

Back fully fit and holding the fort ahead of Leeds’ defence, Ethan Ampadu was booked in the latest 2-2 draw against Bournemouth having committed three fouls and Tottenham’s talented midfield will test his resolve.

Ampadu collected seven bookings in just 29 Championship appearances last season and he looks a leading card candidate in what could turn into a fiery encounter.

Calvert-Lewin can pounce on slow-starting Spurs

Tottenham have conceded the opening goal in three of their last four matches and a resurgent Dominic Calvert-Lewin may be able to capitalise.

The former Everton man was on target in the 3-1 win at Wolves and he will feel that he should have at least doubled his tally against Bournemouth a week ago, when he spurned three golden chances in the first 20 minutes.

Leeds vs Tottenham Bet Builder

Leeds or draw double chance

Leeds are unbeaten in 23 home league games and victory over Everton and draws with Newcastle and Bournemouth show the difficulty in travelling to Elland Road.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin to have a shot on target

The Leeds forward has had at least one shot on target in each of his last four Premier League appearances and he had three efforts on goal in the recent 2-2 draw with Bournemouth.

Ethan Ampadu to be shown a card

The Welsh international loves a physical battle and he committed three fouls against Bournemouth which resulted in a stoppage-time booking.

Pays out at 7-1 with bet365

Key stats for Leeds vs Tottenham

♦ Leeds have gone a full year without losing a home league game, with their current unbeaten run standing at 23 matches.

♦ Spurs have picked up seven points from three Premier League away games

♦ Three of Tottenham's last four matches have ended in draws

♦ Three of Leeds’s last five matches have ended level after 90 minutes

♦ Each of the last six meetings between this pair have gone over 2.5 goals

Leeds

Daniel James will be out for a few weeks after rolling his ankle in training and joins Wilfried Gnonto on the treatment table. Goalkeeper Lucas Perri has returned to training but this match comes too soon.

Predicted line-up (4-3-3): Darlow; Bogle, Rodon, Struijk, Gudmundsson; Stach, Ampadu, Longstaff; Aaronson, Calvert-Lewin, Okafor.

Subs: Harrison, Piroe, Nmecha, Tanaka, Gruev, Bijol, Justin, Gray.

Tottenham

James Maddison, Dejan Kulusevski and Radu Dragusin are long-term absentees while Dominic Solanke, Yves Bissouma, Randal Kolo Muani and Kota Takai remain sidelined. However, Cristian Romero is set to return.

Tottenham beat Bodo/Glimt 5-1 on aggregate in the semi-finals on their way to Europa League glory last season and the teams meet again in Norway in the Champions League.

Spurs made a winning start to the league phase, beating Villarreal 1-0, although manager Thomas Frank was disappointed with Saturday's Premier League draw at home to bottom club Wolves.

Bodo/Glimt vs Tottenham preview

Thomas Frank has made a promising start to his career as Tottenham manager, although his side flopped as short-priced favourites at home to Wolves on Saturday.

Long-suffering Spurs fans must have feared the worst when Wanderers arrived at north London on a run of five straight Premier League defeats.

Tottenham have a reputation for slipping up against out-of-form opponents and they needed a 94th-minute equaliser from Joao Palhinha to pinch a point against the top flight's bottom club.

That result may dissuade some punters from backing Frank's men on their Champions League trip to Bodo/Glimt in the Arctic Circle but there is a gulf in class and resources between the clubs.

Ange Postecoglou's Spurs eased to a 5-1 aggregate win over the Norwegians in last season's Europa League semi-final, winning 3-1 at home before a 2-0 victory on the artificial pitch at the Aspmyra Stadion.

While plenty of European visitors struggle on trips to Bodo, Tottenham restricted the underdogs to just three shots on target in the two legs of May's tie.

Frank's attacking options are limited by injuries and ineligibility but Bodo/Glimt allowed Slavia Prague 26 shots at goal in their 2-2 draw on matchday one.

Slavia are one of the lowest-rated of the 36 Champions League contenders so Tottenham should be confident of creating enough chances to win the game.

They have defended well in the early weeks of Frank's reign, winning five of their last eight matches to nil including a 1-0 home victory over Villarreal on matchday one and league wins at Manchester City and West Ham.

Bodo score bundles of goals in Norway's Eliteserien but it is not easy to break down a solid Tottenham back four protected by two of Palhinha, Pape Matar Sarr and Rodrigo Bentancur.

Spurs conceded only three goals in seven Europa League knockout ties against AZ Alkmaar, Eintracht Frankfurt, Bodo/Glimt and Manchester United last term and another gritty away performance could be on the cards.

Proactive Porro poses attacking threat

Pedro Porro scored Tottenham's second goal in their second-leg win in Bodo, where he was the only visiting player to have more than one shot.

Porro should be encouraged by the attacking success that Slavia's full-backs had on matchday one as left-back Youssoupha Mbodji scored twice and right-back David Doudera had three attempts at goal.

Bodo's Bjortuft may not keep his discipline

Bodo/Glimt centre-back Odin Bjortuft was the first player booked in Prague on matchday one and he faces another awkward test against Tottenham striker Richarlison.

Bjortuft has the worst disciplinary record of any Bodo player in the Eliteserien, picking up three yellow cards and one red, and is overpriced to be the first name in the referee's notebook again.

Bodo/Glimt vs Tottenham Bet Builder

Tottenham to win

Spurs outclassed Bodo/Glimt in May's Europa League semi-final tie and they have taken seven points from Premier League trips to Manchester City, West Ham and Brighton.

Under 3.5 goals

Tottenham are not at full strength in attack and only one of their last eight matches in all competitions featured over 3.5 goals.

Kasper Hogh to have a shot on target

The hosts' main goal threat is striker Kasper Hogh, who has scored 16 times in 19 Eliteserien starts this season and had a penalty saved against Slavia Prague.

Pays out at 11-2 with bet365

Key stats for Bodo/Glimt vs Tottenham

♦ There have been over 3.5 goals in five of Bodo/Glimt's last seven victories

Tottenham have made a superb start to life under new manager Thomas Frank, taking ten points from five Premier League matches to start the weekend in third, and they will be looking to build on their early success when they entertain rock-bottom Wolves on Saturday evening.

The visitors are already feeling the heat following five successive defeats, although they will be hoping Tuesday's EFL Cup victory over Everton can provide them with the platform to kick on at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Tottenham vs Wolvespreview

Wolves have won four and drawn one of their last five Premier League meetings with Tottenham and the basement boys will be hoping that record can inspire something deep from within as they bid to pick up their first point of the campaign.

However, Wolves are already in serious danger of being cut adrift at the bottom of the Premier League table following five straight defeats and it is hard to see them turning the corner at a new-look Spurs.

Vítor Pereira’s men put their poor league form behind them as they beat a much-changed Everton 2-0 in the third round of the EFL Cup on Tuesday, but this represents a hike in difficulty.

Wolves have made their worst start to a league season in their history and last Saturday’s 3-1 defeat at home to Leeds only exacerbated relegation fears after they relinquished an early lead to concede three times in 14 first-half minutes.

The departures of Matheus Cunha, Rayan Ait-Nouri and the reliable Nelson Semedo has done even more damage than first feared and that raises doubt as to whether they have the character and quality needed to survive the fight.

It is still early days but Wolves have been trailing at half-time in each of their last nine Premier League games, which continually puts them on the back foot, and there seems to be a reliance on physical forward Jorgen Strand Larsen to provide their attacking impetus.

The Molineux men have lost three of their five league games to nil and this trip to Tottenham could follow a similar narrative to their 1-0 defeats away at Bournemouth and Newcastle.

Pereira had no choice but to stay compact, which is why that pair forced only four shots on target apiece, but once they fell behind the writing was virtually on the wall.

Spurs have taken ten points in five Premier League games under Thomas Frank and clean sheets against Burnley, Manchester City and West Ham show that they are far less chaotic than they were with Ange Postecoglou at the helm, especially with Bayern Munich loanee Joao Palhinha anchoring the midfield.

Go Gomes in pursuit of cards

Only Fulham’s Sasa Lukic and Igor Thiago of Brentford have committed more fouls than combative Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes (12) this season and he has been booked in two of his four Premier League meetings with Spurs.

The Brazilian relishes a scrap - he has been booked in three of his last six appearances - and Tottenham’s quality midfield three will severely test his patience.

Spurs to work hard for their rewards

The league table would suggest that this should be routine work for Tottenham but Wolves were plucky in defence in 1-0 losses at Bournemouth and Newcastle and it may take a moment of brilliance for the hosts to unlock the Old Gold rearguard.

Tottenham vs Wolves Bet Builder

Tottenham to win

Wolves have lost all five of their Premier League matches this season and the tide is unlikely to turn at a much-improved Tottenham.

Joao Gomes to be shown a card

The Wolves midfielder loves to get stuck in, having committed 12 fouls in five league games and picked up bookings away at Bournemouth and Newcastle.

Cristian Romero to commit a foul

The Tottenham centre-back has committed six fouls in five league games and he will be relishing the chance to rough up a physical presence like Jorgen Strand Larsen.

Tottenham vs Villarreal preview

Tottenham's most recent Champions League campaign, in 2022-23, ended with a disappointing 1-0 aggregate defeat to Milan in the round of 16.

However, confidence is high in the Spurs camp as they return to the competition with a matchday-one home fixture against Villarreal on Tuesday.

Brennan Johnson's goal settled last season's scrappy Europa League final against Manchester United in Tottenham's favour, securing Champions League football for a team who finished 17th in the Premier League.

That dismal domestic effort under Ange Postecoglou is already a distant memory for Spurs fans, who have enjoyed 3-0 wins over Burnley and West Ham and a 2-0 victory away to Manchester City in their first four games under new man Thomas Frank.

The only setback in the league was a 1-0 home defeat to in-form Bournemouth and Frank could also take positives from his first competitive fixture as Tottenham boss – last month's daunting Uefa Super Cup clash with Paris Saint-Germain.

Spurs led the European champions 2-0 until the 85th minute before conceding two late goals and losing 4-3 on penalties.

PSG's comeback was a reminder of the ruthlessness and focus required to compete in the Champions League and matchday-one visitors Villarreal are unlikely to roll over in north London.

They won their final six matches in La Liga last term to qualify for the Champions League and began the new campaign with stylish home wins over Real Oviedo (2-0) and Girona (5-0).

Their progress has stalled in their last two games, though, as they conceded a late equaliser at Celta Vigo and lost 2-0 at Atletico Madrid on Saturday.

There was not much between the teams in Madrid, where Atletico scored with two of their three shots on target and Nicolas Pepe hit the crossbar for Villarreal.

The Yellow Submarine have injuries in defence but are still capable of frustrating Tottenham until the break and the draw-Spurs double result – a winner in Saturday's 3-0 victory at West Ham – is a decent bet.

Rising star Moleiro may unsettle home defence

Young winger Alberto Moleiro caught the eye for Las Palmas last season, scoring six goals and averaging 1.9 shots per game in La Liga, and he has made a bright start to his Villarreal career.

The Spain Under-21 international had three shots against Atletico, more than any other player on the pitch, and could shine on his Champions League debut.

Back Spurs forward to collect another card

Tottenham striker Richarlison is expected to lead the line after dropping to the bench for the weekend win at West Ham and he looks overpriced to be booked.

The Brazil forward relishes the physical side of the game and he picked up yellow cards in Tottenham's high-profile fixtures against PSG and Manchester City this term.

Under 3.5 goals

None of Tottenham's first four Premier League games under Thomas Frank produced over 3.5 goals and three of Villarreal's four league matches ended with under 2.5 goals.

Nicolas Pepe to have a shot on target

La Liga's Player of the Month for August scored twice in his first three appearances of the season and hit the crossbar with a free-kick against Atletico Madrid on Saturday.

Rodrigo Bentancur to be shown a card

Tottenham's midfield enforcer picked up 13 yellow cards in 32 Premier League and Europa League starts last season.
