The last time Tottenham won three successive Premier League matches was in February 2025 so there should be no complacency among their supporters going into Saturday night's London derby.

Fans who have spent the last 19 months not bothering to set their alarms for dawns that only ever prove false are far too hard-bitten by failure.

So while they will be naturally buoyed – or should be – by a not-always-impressive 3-1 win over Coventry and a seriously decent 2-0 win at Chelsea, they will be the first to remind anyone that any steps in the right direction are usually soon followed by a trip.

But maybe not this time, or not this weekend at least. Maybe that hat-trick of wins is incoming. The layers certainly have few doubts.

Anyone who watched Tottenham play so well at Stamford Bridge last weekend has to be encouraged by what they saw.

Chelsea looked stale and predictable and minus a central striker, whereas Spurs looked lively, confident on the ball, not averse to some scary risk-taking but lethal on the break.

Add in an obvious danger from set-plays given the delivery from some of their more gifted sorts and they are a threat.

What they need, while they transition under Roberto De Zerbi, is to be playing opponents when those adversaries are not quite right. Chelsea certainly were not and the same can be said about Crystal Palace.

Palace head coach Pierre Sage is feeling the heat. The Frenchman has clocked up five wins this season but only two have been in the Premier League, where they have lost five of eight.

The Eagles have not found the net in three of their last four league games – a goalless draw with Leeds and 5-0 and 2-0 defeats by Brighton and Newcastle respectively.

And even a heavily reshuffled side could muster only four shots in an anaemic display at Fulham in the EFL Cup on Wednesday. Luckily for Sage and his men, Eddie Nketiah took the one that came his way and the Eagles went through to the quarter-finals on the wings of a 1-0 win.

There is a chronic lack of firepower at the club. Jorgen Strand Larsen has missed games but isn't the real deal anyway, Jean-Philippe Mateta is just back from a lay-off and the exciting Ismaila Sarr is crocked.

This looks like a golden opportunity for Spurs and if they strike early, they can triumph. Palace ship too many first-half goals, are short of confidence and the hosts can take this in a game featuring at least two goals.

Count on Canvot to put in the tackles

Jaydee Canvot averages 2.4 tackles per game and there is a good case for believing he could soar past that line at Tottenham.

In Spurs' last two wins, against Coventry and Chelsea, the opposing full-backs clocked nine tackles in each match.

Palace don't play with a conventional back four, but Tottenham clearly expose opponents down the flanks and Canvot could easily get to drawn into making his share of tackles.

Four matches into the new term, Spurs and Villa find themselves in a familiar pickle.

Tottenham finished 17th in the table in 2024-25 and 2025-26 and they kicked off this round of fixtures in exactly the same spot.

Tottenham are still awaiting their first goal of the Premier League season as they prepare to take on unbeaten Everton at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday evening.

Roberto De Zerbi's side took a small step forward with a 0-0 draw at Nottingham Forest, but they are four points worse off than the Toffees, who shook off their transfer deadline-day debacle with last Sunday's 2-2 draw at home to Manchester United.

After splashing the cash in the summer transfer window, Tottenham would have been hoping for a far better early return on their investment.

Spurs were clearly ill-prepared for their season opener against Brentford, who thumped them 3-0, while they were then stunned by Newcastle at home.

Roberto De Zerbi's men secured their first point of the season in a goalless draw at Nottingham Forest last Saturday, but they are still searching for their first win and goal of the new league campaign.

The draw at Forest was achieved despite Spurs failing to post a shot on target, and they were thankful for a lengthy but ultimately correct VAR call which ruled out a second-half effort from Neco Williams.

It was far from perfect but Spurs' performance at the City Ground was at least a step in the right direction.

They commanded almost 60 per cent of possession in the East Midlands and the midfield partnership of Rodrigo Bentancur and Sandro Tonali is starting to gel and look more effective.

And there were also moments of encouragement from attackers Omar Marmoush, Savio and Mohamed Kudus, who are getting sharper with every outing.

Tottenham's new-look attack is a long way away from reaching its full potential but it may be effective enough to inflict a first defeat of the season on Everton.

The unbeaten Toffees have put five points on the board and their fans celebrated last Sunday's 2-2 draw at home to Manchester United with understandable enthusiasm given the disappointment and anger at a disastrous end to the transfer window.

However, Everton's fans are still far from happy with the club's ownership and it would take only a few poor results for them to voice their discontent.

Everton were fortunate to snatch a 1-1 draw at Bournemouth a fortnight ago and they needed a couple of stunning strikes to salvage a draw against United, who were the better side at the Hill Dickinson.

To this point David Moyes has been satisfied with the players' efforts, but his threadbare squad features just one senior centre-forward, Thierno Barry, and his starting eleven is clearly not as strong after Iliman Ndiaye's deadline-day switch to Manchester City.

Ndiaye contributed six goals and three assists last season and his departure is a major blow for a club who finished 13th in 2025-26, only ten points above the relegation zone.

Everton players and fans closed ranks and made life difficult for United, but there are 35 more games to go and the lack of depth and balance within their squad may soon tell.

In contrast, Spurs remain a side with plenty of potential to grow and they look ready to claim their first league victory of the campaign.

Marmoush can make his mark

Among the several Spurs players on an upward trajectory is former Manchester City striker Marmoush.

The Egyptian star, 27, went close with a decent effort against Nottingham Forest and his first goal for the club may not be too far away.

It's a simple enough equation but Tottenham fans are acutely aware that their team haven't been doing simple this season.

Beat Everton at a toxic Tottenham Stadium and they stay up and, given the state of their goal difference, a draw should also be enough.

Defeat and then it's all eyes on the London Stadium where West Ham have no choice but to beat Leeds if they want to send their capital rivals down in their place.

So, simple enough. But there has to be the fear for home supporters, given what a horrible and unpredictable mess Tottenham's season has been to this point, that a twist or two on the final day is inevitable.

David Moyes insists his side will take this game seriously even though their European ambitions have vanished following an untimely six-game winless streak.

Roberto De Zerbi's charges very definitely do have to take this game seriously, however, and at a venue where the build-up will have been marked by protests at the running of the club, there is a huge weight on the shoulders of Spurs' stars that won't be easy to deal with.

And given that this team have managed just two wins at home all season, they clearly find playing in north London difficult at the best of times.

In contrast, Everton have not qualified for Europe but they have clocked up more away wins than Champions League-bound Manchester United and Aston Villa, so will fear nothing in the capital.

Inevitably, Spurs are a price they would not normally be if this was any other weekend, meaning Everton are probably a spot of value.

They have also had a week off while Tottenham were lost 2-1 at Chelsea on Tuesday.

On the flip side they were not good at home to Sunderland last weekend, going down 3-1 to extend their winless run to six.

It's not easy to back either side with that in mind, especially when accounting for the potential late drama.

What's evident from the last two games under De Zerbi - a 1-1 draw against Leeds and the 2-1 loss at Chelsea - is that they are starting slowly and panicking later.

In a match where a draw will do and Everton have nothing on the line, expect another slow start but a frantic second half. There might be a goal – or a goal at West Ham – to change the script.

Take the second 45 minutes to produce the most goals for a third Tottenham game in a row, a prospect strengthened by the fact that their last two games have conjured up a combined 20 minutes of second-half stoppage time.

James Garner narrowly missed out on an England World Cup place despite a fine season and he can prove Thomas Tuchel wrong with a big performance, in which he should register least one effort on target for a third game in a row.
