Simon Jordan believes Sandro Tonali has joined Tottenham Hotspur for financial gain.
And in a passionate rant, he claimed Spurs have zero “football expertise” and “don’t know what they are doing” amid an ongoing spending spree. Tonali is set to leave Newcastle United for a staggering £100million.
The midfielder’s desire to leave was no secret, with his agent, Beppe Riso, publicly teasing a potential exit in recent months. Toon chiefs snubbed two £75million advances before striking a £100million deal earlier this week.
‘Money!’ - Simon Jordan
Former Crystal Palace owner Jordan has attacked Tonali - insisting his decision is financially motivated. The Italian is set to earn around £275,00 per week in North London.
“I'm not disputing it,” he told talkSPORT when asked if Tottenham are showing ambition. “What does it tell you about the players that are joining them? Because with respect to Tonali, why would you go from Newcastle to Tottenham Hotspur? I suspect it's because of the money and I don't know what that tells you.
“That tells you that you've either got a player that's playing for money or a player that's playing for ambition because you're going to a side that finished fourth from bottom of the league last year.
“Going to the central theme, I don't think they know what they're doing. They're paying massively over the odds for these players. They're paying £100million for Tonali. They're paying £85 million for (Matheus) Fernandes. What market is it? Who are they bidding against?
“You're not getting Tonali because he wants to come to Spurs. You're getting Tonali because you're paying Newcastle £100million and the guy is going to get £300,000 a week. Fantastic. Let’s see how it goes.”
Simon Jordan slams Spurs
Jordan - who questioned whether Tonali would join Spurs a fortnight ago - also fired a vicious swipe at the club’s hierarchy. He added: “I don't think they've got any football expertise in the building in terms of the commercial side of things. I don't think Vinai (Venkatesham) has a clue about football.
“I think he knows how to run commercial things, but he has no clue about football. The sporting directors in there are not good enough. We can all spend money.”
