Lucas Bergvall has informed Tottenham Hotspur that he wishes to leave the club this summer in search of a new opportunity, according to David Ornstein.
It comes as the Swedish international midfielder is looking for a new challenge, having struggled to secure a guaranteed place in the starting lineup at the club.
The 20-year-old was signed from Djurgardens as a promising option for the future, signing a long-term contract until 2031 in North London.
However, even with the struggles that Tottenham have faced in the middle of the park, Bergvall has not been able to make a place in the midfield his own.
With Tottenham in talks to sign Sandro Tonali this summer, his chances appear slimmer heading into the new season. That could now spark a potential transfer exit.
Lucas Bergvall Transfer Exit
According to David Ornstein, Tottenham have been made aware of Bergvall's desire to leave the club, while he is away on World Cup duty with Sweden.
Spurs are claimed to have rebuffed interest from Premier League rivals Aston Villa and Chelsea in the January transfer market, who tried their luck at landing the young midfielder.
At the time, the North London club had a clear stance that they didn't wish to sell the promising star, and it's unclear whether they will stick by that or sanction an exit amid the flurry of signings made already this summer.
Swedish outlet Fotbolldirekt claimed back in February that Tottenham had placed a £57 million price tag on any exit for Bergvall, while also claiming that Liverpool were another team in the chase for his signature.
It remains to be seen whether a sale will be pushed through, but there is a clear balancing act for the hierarchy at Tottenham to consider in the coming weeks.
Tottenham Need Sales
Tottenham's priority this summer has been to add some quality through bringing in established Premier League players who can make an impact here and now.
While there have been some bargain buys with Marcos Senesi and Andy Robertson, an expensive deal for Jan Paul van Hecke may be triumphed by huge outlays for Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes, and Savinho.
That clearly needs to be balanced out by some sales. That will not only help raise funds, but offer a chance to get a better balance in the squad, with the reduced game time available without European football next season.
Bergvall's potential sale could raise a hefty sum for a player who hasn't quite made it in any particular role for Spurs, while he could be joined by the likes of Cristian Romero and Radu Dragusin.
That may be the trade-off of long-term potential for short-term improvement, but Tottenham need a clear uplift in quality, having looked too far ahead for too long.
