It’s very much a case of never a dull moment for Spurs fans. A good few have now been blatantly called out after last night’s game against Leeds United. During the 1-1 draw against Spurs, Mathys Tel caught Ethan Ampadu with a boot to the head while attempting an overhead kick or clearance in the penalty area.

The referee initially waved it away, but VAR reviewed it and awarded Leeds the penalty (which Dominic Calvert-Lewin converted).

Post-match, Ampadu appeared in a TV interview (Sky Sports) with a clear, brutal red mark/wound on the side of his forehead — strong visual proof of contact. Leeds even posted a close-up photo on social media with a sarcastic jab at Spurs fans who claimed there was “no touch” or that he was exaggerating.

The decision was technically correct under the rules — a high, reckless boot making contact with an opponent’s head is a foul, even if accidental and even if Tel got some of the ball. Ampadu’s visible head wound provided clear evidence of significant contact.

Many Spurs fans felt it was harsh/soft, or even accidental. Tel was trying to clear the ball, and questioned if there was enough force or if Ampadu exaggerated. In fact, it was a clear foul, dangerous play, and the referee should have spotted it live. VAR got it right. Leeds posted the close-up of Ampadu’s wound to silence doubters.

He was named Player of the Match, handled the incident well, staying down until VAR did its job.
