Dane Scarlett’s career at Tottenham could be drawing to a close this summer.

Scarlett famously made his Premier League debut in February 2021 under Jose Mourinho, who stated at the time that he wanted to be eternally linked with the Spurs gem as he inevitably developed into a top player.

However, since then, things have not gone according to plan for the 21-year-old, who has been shipped out on loan three times over the past three years with mixed returns.

Scarlett was recalled early from Oxford United last season and went on to score his first goal for Tottenham in the UEFA Europa League, but his involvement from this point forward was still limited.

The England youth international still has two years left on his contract with Spurs, but could be set to make an early exit after recent developments.

Tottenham agree seven-figure fee to sign Oliver Boast

Tottenham have a rich history in signing top young talents from within the English leagues, including the likes of Gareth Bale and Dele Alli.

Last summer, they brought Archie Gray from Leeds United, who made a huge impact in his debut season in N17 and is expected to have an even more pivotal role under Thomas Frank.

Spurs are looking to repeat the trick and are set to sign Leeds United striker Oliver Boast for a seven-figure fee, according to Beren Cross (26 June).

The highly-rated 16-year-old has decided to leave after falling behind Gray’s younger brother Harry in the pecking order in West Yorkshire, prompting Spurs to snap him up.

His acquisition will add to Tottenham‘s growing contingent of teenage prospects, but it could also push out other academy products to make space for his development.

One of those at risk is Scarlett, whose career at Spurs looks in even more jeopardy than ever before.

Too few academy products make Tottenham’s first team

The flip side of all the excellent scouting being done by Tottenham is that their homegrown talents are struggling to make an impact at the club.

Mikey Moore is the shining light to emerge from the academy recently, but players like Scarlett and Jamie Donley end up going out on loan several times before often being sold.

While signing Boast will be seen as a coup, Spurs risk falling behind Premier League clubs in nurturing and developing their own players, which is why they are struggling to fill the UEFA Champions League club-trained quota.
