Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Lucas Bergvall has reportedly asked to leave the club this summer as Robert De Zerbi plans to reinforce his options in the middle of the park.

The 20-year-old is currently away at the 2026 World Cup with Sweden and, according to The Athletic, has told Spurs he would like a ‘fresh start’ at a new club this summer.

It comes two-and-a-half years after Bergvall joined Tottenham from Swedish club Djurgarden. He impressed in his debut season under Ange Postecoglou as he was named the club’s player of the year during the Europa League-winning campaign.

But the young midfielder was limited to just 11 Premier League starts last season as Spurs finished 17th, narrowly avoiding relegation on the final day.

With Spurs pushing to sign Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United, as well as Mateus Fernandes of West Ham, Bergvall is reportedly looking for a route out of North London.

And that has alerted several potential suitors across Europe, including several sides in the Premier League. Aston Villa and Chelsea were recently linked with a move for Bergvall, while Newcastle hold a historic interest stretching back to his time in Sweden.

Back in 2024, the Swedish media claimed Newcastle had tabled an ultimately unsuccessful bid for Bergvall prior to his £8.5million move to Spurs. Bergvall is under contract at Spurs until June 2031.

Sandro Tonali transfer latest

Bergvall’s future could be determined by potential incomings at Spurs, with Newcastle star Tonali a top target.

Roberto De Zerbi’s side reportedly saw a bid in the region of £80million for Tonali turned down by Newcastle, who will hold out for an improved offer closer to the £100million mark.

Spurs remain in discussions and will push to agree a deal while Manchester City and Arsenal continue to monitor the situation. Tonali is open to leaving Newcastle this summer after the club failed to qualify for Europe.

While Spurs can’t offer European football, the prospect of working alongside fellow Brescian De Zerbi in London, along with an improved contract, is understood to be something that appeals to Tonali.
