Tottenham Hotspur are eyeing up a surprise move to sign Celtic star Arne Engels this summer, according to Football Insider.
Spurs have been very busy in the transfer market so far, with Roberto De Zerbi adding Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi, Martin Dubravka, Jan Paul van Hecke, Mateus Fernandes, and Sandro Tonali to his squad after they narrowly avoided relegation on the final day of the Premier League season.
But while the club are now prioritising moves to bring in forwards, the club are alert to potential market opportunities, which has led them in the direction of a move for a surprise star.
Tottenham Eyeing Celtic Star Engels
Engels, who has been described as 'powerful', was one of the top performers for the Glasgow side as they lifted the Scottish Premiership title on the final day of the season, thanks to a 1-0 win over Hearts.
The Glasgow side rejected a £25m bid for his services in January from Nottingham Forest, but are expecting more interest this summer and a deal is expected to happen, with the player looking for a new challenge.
According to Pete O'Rourke, Spurs are one of the clubs showing an interest in his services, despite spending £185m on two new midfield signings already.
"It's going to be hard for Celtic to keep hold of him this summer, despite rejecting an offer for him in January," he said.
"Obviously, they've got more time to plan ahead in this summer transfer window. I'm sure Engels himself would be interested in the move away if a move to the Premier League comes up.
"For Tottenham, again, their interest has come as a surprise maybe in some respects. They've bolstered their midfield already with Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes.
"So whether they see Engels joining that as well remains to be seen, but they are showing no signs of slowing down in the transfer market."
Tottenham Must Prioritise Forwards
While Tottenham have been busy in the transfer window already, there is still a big need in the forward departments this summer. Man City star Savinho has emerged as the top target, while other players have been linked too.
However, the club shouldn't shut their eyes and ears to potential market opportunities, and a move for Engels could allow them to further strengthen their midfield, especially with Lucas Bergvall's future up in the air.
But with a deal for Engels unlikely to be very cheap, the club must ensure that they are prioritising the right deals in this window if they want to be more competitive.
