talkSPORT pundit has urged Tottenham to sign ‘this’ striker, this summer.
Tottenham Hotspur have been urged to make a move for Victor Osimhen this summer, with Sonny Snelling making the case for the 27-year-old Nigerian as the striker capable of transforming De Zerbi’s attack into a genuinely competitive Premier League force after a season in which the club’s forwards produced a collective return of just 15 league goals between them.
Snelling’s argument is compelling in its simplicity. The market for elite strikers has become increasingly difficult to navigate, with Benjamin Sesko, Viktor Gyokeres, and Joao Pedro all having secured their futures at top clubs.
Osimhen, by contrast, represents a rare combination of proven elite-level quality, availability, and a profile that should not realistically still be attainable for a club of Premier League standing. Snelling said (h/t talkSPORT):
“A lot of big teams last year got in their striker, Sesko, Gyokeres, Joao Pedro, and they’re all secured now. But there’s one striker’s name who gets touted around every year, and he is at a perfect age of 27. He’s in a league where he’s smashing it up, and he should come back to a top-five league, and that’s Victor Osimhen. He’s not going to the World Cup because Nigeria didn’t qualify, he should come to the Premier League. I think he’s a top, elite striker, and if you want Premier League experience, I don’t know who you would attract.”
The statistics support the enthusiasm. Osimhen has scored in 74 appearances for Galatasaray since joining, with 22 coming this season alone across all competitions. His career total of 202 goals for club and country places him among the most prolific strikers of his generation, and his Serie A title-winning campaign with Napoli in 2023 demonstrated what he is capable of at the very highest level of European football.
Tottenham attackers are not producing goals
The contrast with what Tottenham have had available this season could not be more striking. Richarlison, Mathys Tel, and Randal Kolo Muani managed 15 league goals between three players across 38 games. Dominic Solanke was consistently hampered by injury. The through-ball data, recently revealed by Squawka to be the worst in the Premier League, reflects a team that could not create the opportunities even when the intent was there. Osimhen’s movement, his ability to run in behind defensive lines, and his clinical finishing would address multiple problems simultaneously.
The Lewis family have promised significant investment this summer, and the appointment of De Zerbi on a five-year deal signals genuine ambition. If that ambition is real, Osimhen, alongside the free transfer arrivals of Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi, represents exactly the kind of statement the fanbase needs to believe the rebuild is serious.
