Harry Kane 'more than welcome' back at Tottenham Hotspur, Thomas Frank says after transfer clause revealed in Bayern Munich contract
Published 24/09/2025 at 08:27 GMT+1
Harry Kane left Tottenham Hotspur in 2023 to pursue a new challenge at Bayern Munich. The England captain has gone on to record staggering goal returns during his time in Germany. Details of Kane's contract have been revealed, which show he has release clauses to favour a return to Spurs in the future. Spurs boss Thomas Frank has welcomed the idea of a Kane reunion.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Thomas Frank would warmly welcome Harry Kane back to the club after it was revealed the England captain has a release clause in his Bayern Munich contract.
Kane left north London in favour of Bavaria in 2023 and has gone on to achieve staggering feats at Allianz Arena.
During his time at Bayern, he has already scored 98 goals in 103 matches and won the Bundesliga title, as well as lifting the German Super Cup.

Spurs could reunite with Kane as release clause revealed - Paper Round
Kane’s most recent outing saw him score a hat-trick in his team’s 4-1 league victory at Hoffenheim.
That was his ninth treble in Germany’s top flight, which leaves him seventh on the league’s all-time list of players to take a match ball home.
Despite Kane’s performances indicating that he is more than comfortable with his life in Munich, Spurs supporters can cling on to the hope of a reunion with their former No. 10 due to the details within his current contract.
Bayern bought Kane for a reported £100 million, but a clause in his agreement would have allowed him to leave the club for £67m in January 2025.

That figure will drop to £54m in the next transfer window, according to multiple reports, and it is believed Spurs would have a ‘first option’ - which means if Bayern were to accept a bid from a club for Kane, or the release clause was met, then Spurs would be given the chance to match it.
"There are a lot of Tottenham fans, including myself, who would like to see Kane back," Frank said when asked about the possibility.
"Personally, I don't think he will do it right now, if I'm honest. He'll probably stay in Bayern and continue performing well.
"He was the top scorer last year. He won the title and he's doing fantastic now."
Kane’s start to the new season has been impressive, with 13 goals from just seven matches, but he did miss out on a top-10 finish in the Ballon d’Or rankings, with the England skipper having to settle for 13th spot.
An early-season UEFA Champions League showdown with Chelsea offered Kane a reminder of playing against Premier League opposition, and he duly stepped up to the challenge with two goals in a 3-1 victory.

Frank feels Kane still has more to do at Bayern, but would never turn down the chance to work with the Spurs legend.
"I don't know what he's thinking," Frank added. "Myself, I'm a traveller, I like to explore things as well, so he's been here for many years, so why not enjoy the time in Bayern a little bit more.
"But he's welcome. If he wants to join us, he's more than welcome."
Kane came through the academy setup at Spurs and gained valuable experience with loan spells at Leyton Orient, Millwall, Norwich City and Leicester City before making his mark on the first team.

Tottenham Hotspur lead chase for £56.7 million Harry Kane ahead of potential Bayern Munich exit - Paper Round

Tottenham have been linked with a £56.7 million move for their former striker Harry Kane next summer, while Patrick Bamford could be set for a switch to La Liga outfit Getafa after leaving Leeds. Elsewhere, Aston Villa could appoint Roberto Olabe to replace the outgoing Monchi, and Manchester United defender Tyrell Malacia attracted interest this summer.

Spurs in pole position for Kane
The Telegraph believes that Tottenham are well-placed should Harry Kane decide to leave Bayern Munich next summer.
A £56.7 million release clause could come into effect, and Spurs have £200 million to spend according to PSR rules.

Man City lining up €120m offer for PSG star - Euro Transfer News
The paper states: "The fear in Germany is that Harry Kane’s third season at Bayern Munich could be his last, despite the fact the club are currently more reliant on him than at any other point of his time at the Allianz Arena.
"There has also been big talk around Tottenham Hotspur lately, with the Lewis family insisting that sustained sporting success is top of their agenda following the departure of former chairman Daniel Levy.
"If the Lewis family want to walk the walk, rather than just talking a good game, they will make sure Spurs are at the front of the queue to re-sign Kane next summer if the fears in Germany are realised.
"It would seem that striker will be a priority position for Tottenham to fill next summer and, unlike many of their rivals, the club do not need to worry too much about their position regarding profit and sustainability rules. It has been estimated that Spurs have £200m in PSR headroom, which means, unlike some of their rivals, they do not have to worry about making a big outlay on a player who is at an age where they may have little or no resale value."

Bamford set for Getafe switch
Reports in Spain suggest that Getafe could make a late move for former Leeds striker Patrick Bamford.
The 32-year-old has been without a club since the summer, but can sign for clubs as he is a free agent.
The Sun reports: "Patrick Bamford could be handed a fresh chapter in Spain with a shock move to La Liga side Getafe.
"The 32-year-old is a free agent after being released by Leeds this summer.
"Bamford netted 60 times in 205 appearances over seven years with the Whites, but failed to score in 17 Championship games last season.
"Now he could get a second chance to play at the top level after Spanish journalist Matteo Moretto claimed he was in talks with Getafe."
Villa set to clinch Olabe deal
Aston Villa are closing in on the appointment of former Real Sociedad transfer guru Roberto Olabe.
The Mirror believes the 57-year-old will soon agree to take over the role recently vacated by president of football operations Monchi.
The paper writes: "Aston Villa are expected to appoint Roberto Olabe as the successor to Monchi. The 57-year-old parted ways with Real Sociedad earlier this year and has been in discussions with Villa about taking the reins of the club's football department, and an agreement has reportedly been struck.
"Monchi's departure was revealed on Monday night, with an official announcement anticipated soon. Villa have been bracing for his exit, earmarking Olabe as their top choice. Olabe is considered one of Europe's leading football executives and previously worked with Unai Emery at Almeria.
"Alberto Benito, who joined Villa's recruitment team in May 2023, took over from Olabe as sporting director at Almeria."
Malacia still frozen out at United
Tyrell Malacia has not yet received permission to play for Manchester United’s under-21 side, according to the Mail.
While it had been anticipated that he would receive approaches from Saudi and Turkish sides, the paper also reveals that no officer was deemed sufficient.
The paper explains: "Interestingly, Malacia is also said to have requested to be allowed to play for the Under 21s, but is yet to receive the green light.
"The 26-year-old, who was Ten Hag's first signing when he joined United for £13m in 2022, is the last remaining member of Amorim’s ‘bomb squad’, having been left behind by Jadon Sancho (on loan at Aston Villa), Marcus Rashford (on loan at Barcelona), Antony (sold to Real Betis), and Alejandro Garnacho (sold to Chelsea).
"A late loan deal for Malacia to join La Liga side Elche collapsed and no suitable offers arrived from Turkey or Saudi Arabia. He spent the second half of last season back in the Netherlands with PSV Eindhoven, and last turned out for United away at FCSB in the Europa League on January 30."

Tottenham Hotspur unrecognisable as Thomas Frank shows his 'tactical nous', says Martin Keown after UEFA Champions League victory over Villarreal
Published 17/09/2025 at 00:30 GMT+1
Tottenham needed a goalkeeping error to get their UEFA Champions League campaign off to winning ways, but that did not stop them impressing TNT Sports pundit Martin Keown. Thomas Frank's side edged to a slender 1-0 win over Villarreal on home soil on Tuesday night. And Keown praised the new Spurs boss for "improving" his players in his short spell at the helm.

Martin Keown thinks Thomas Frank has already transformed Tottenham Hotspur.
The new manager guided his side to a 1-0 victory over Villarreal on their return to the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday night.
It means the Dane has won four of his first six matches since making the switch from Brentford in the summer.

They failed to hit the same levels as on Saturday, when London rivals West Ham were on the end of a 3-0 drubbing.
But Keown was still impressed with what he saw, as he told TNT Sports: "I'm looking at players and I don't recognise them. Richarlison now, he looks a wonderful talent. Players [are] improving all the time.
"We always knew Thomas Frank, with a good budget, good situation, would turn out to be... we know he's a good person, a good manager.

"The players now are really responding. He's showing that tactical nous, coaching ability, and Spurs are getting a lot better."
Despite their improvements in recent weeks, Spurs still needed a helping hand to get past their Spanish opponents.
The only goal of the game came in the fourth minute, when Villarreal's Luiz Junior was left red-faced by a horrendous error.
Attempting to claim a low cross from the right, the goalkeeper somehow spilled the ball, allowing it to slip through his body and into the back of the net.
"To be honest, you can't really have any sympathy for him," Keown continued. "The goalkeepers go out, what, two hours before kick off?
"You don't need that kind of warm up, surely, and then to do this in the opening minutes... it's a gimme.
"It's a great result for Spurs, first time out in the Champions League, but honestly, the goalkeeper, he's had a nightmare.

"If his family are watching, look away now, because it's a shocker. I'm not even sure how he made it possible from that angle."
"You couldn't even do that if you tried," added TNT Sports expert Steve McManaman. "Dive forward and make the ball go backwards?
"They got off to a wonderful start, Tottenham. They got the right result. But they certainly had a bit of luck to get them forward, just to ease themselves into this competition, that's the most important thing."
Frank learning to 'appreciate' victories
The win is Tottenham's first in the Champions League since the 2022/23 season.
They made their way back into the competition for the current campaign by winning the UEFA Europa League in May.
Whilst they were making their return to Europe's top table after a three-year absence, it was a debut in the tournament for Frank.
Having been in charge of Brentford since 2018, his only previous experiences of continental football were this season's UEFA Super Cup, and 10 Europa League qualifiers as Brondby boss a decade ago.
Getting a maiden victory in the Champions League is therefore something to cherish.
"It is [a very special moment], and of course I'm very happy with that," Frank told Amazon Prime. "I definitely learned you need to be happy with your wins and appreciate them.
"I think also that there were still many good things. I think we defended exceptionally well. We gave very, very little away throughout the game against, in my opinion, a very good Villarreal side.
"I think offensively we didn't hit the highest level. There was definitely a spell second half where we decided 'ah, let's give it to the Villarreal guys and then let's just sprint back'. I think that's a very good fun thing.
"But on the flip side, I think Villarreal are a good team and they defended very well as well. It was a very, very even game that we just edged.
"I learned that they are working very hard and that we have a very good foundation to stand on in terms of our defensive organisation.
"I think it's good and we gave very little away. This is the Champions League against a very good team.
"Also, I knew it, I think it was a step forward against West Ham. Offensively, that is definitely the area where we need to get better.
"So, Djed Spence and [Xavi] Simons, it's their second game together. Too many times they played too short, or too in to feet, instead of finding a better relationship. There's something in that, definitely."

‘So angry’ Cristian Romero admits past criticism of Tottenham Hotspur was a ‘mistake’ but eyes bright future ahead of UEFA Champions League return
Published 15/09/2025 at 22:28 GMT+1
Cristian Romero says Tottenham are moving in the right direction but has admitted frustration at a failure to act like "big clubs" sparked previous comments. Spurs beat Manchester United to secure a first trophy in 17 years with Europa League success in May, which earned qualification into this season's Champions League - and Romero hopes it is the first of many pieces of silverware with the club.

Cristian Romero is confident that Tottenham are heading in the right direction and praised the swift impact of Thomas Frank as the club prepares to embark on their return to the UEFA Champions League this week.
Last December, following a 4-3 defeat by Chelsea, the Spurs captain appeared to criticise the club's board during a sit-down with Telemundo Deportes, claiming the club had fallen behind rivals due to a lack of investment.
Romero said: "Man City competes every year, you see how Liverpool strengthens its squad, Chelsea strengthens their squad, doesn’t do well, strengthens again, and now they’re seeing results. Those are the things to imitate."

Ultimately, the club would finish 17th under Ange Postecoglou but ended the season by clinching the UEFA Europa League with victory over Premier League rivals Manchester United.
Despite ending the club's 17-year wait for silverware, it ultimately cost Postecoglou his job, with the early days of Frank's reign hinting at producing more consistent performances and forging sustainable success at the North London club.

Spurs' total net spend for the summer of 2025 came to £145m, but the departure of chairman Daniel Levy earlier this month has signalled the club's desire to move in a new direction.
Romero now appears buoyed by Tottenham's revival under Frank.
Ahead of Tuesday's visit of Villarreal in the Champions League, the 27-year-old admitted: "Yes, I did a lot of interviews which seemed like I was talking badly about people inside the club, but in the end I’m a person who sometimes makes mistakes and that’s it.
"I always want the best for the club. Sometimes, things have been said that aren’t true as well, but always, everything I said is because I want there to be a structure of a club that can be at the top level, part of the big clubs.
"That’s why I was sometimes so angry before, but today I see a very, very organised club with a clear idea and a coach who is organising things, and everyone is seeing that in a short space of time we are with him and that’s it.
Daniel Levy stood down as chairman this month

"Absolutely everyone inside is looking in the same direction, and that is the important thing. We hope obviously, to continue like this. There are objectives for the season but as I said before, our heads are in tomorrow’s game.
"We are going to enjoy that we’re back in the Champions League, that’s the most important thing. I see a fantastic group, a coach who leaves us with a clear idea.
"The group is very happy, and we have to go game by game but I believe we can achieve great things. We hope and we are going to fight to lift another trophy."
Tuesday night will be the first time Tottenham have played at home since the shock of Levy stepping down from his position on September 2, the last step in what was a summer of change that saw Vinai Venkatesham begin his role as chief executive back in June before Frank's arrival.

Romero added on Levy: "I don’t know what’s happened, but he’s a person who’s been at the club for a good many years. We need to thank him, because he’s the person who brought me here to Spurs.
"In the end it depends on everyone that we pull in the same direction. I think that since Thomas [Frank] arrived here, they have started to take all those decisions to go in the same direction. And then when it’s like that, everything runs a lot more easily, right?
"The players know what the objectives are for the season, and we continue like this. We started to improve and we want another title this season."
