2025/26 Revisited: October - Leeds United
Description

October began with Daniel Farke’s Leeds United welcoming Thomas Frank’s Tottenham Hotspur to Elland Road. The visitors took the lead in fortuitous circumstances when Mathys Tel’s right-footed strike took a wicked deflection to wrongfoot Karl Darlow but the Whites responded well, levelling proceedings through Noah Okafor.

Brenden Aaronson had initially forced a fine save from Guglielmo Vicario though the Swiss international was quickest to react and bundle home. Somewhat against the run of play, the visitors retook the lead through another shot that cannoned off a white shirt and despite throwing everything at Spurs, including a Joël Piroe chance saved by Vicario, it wasn’t to be.

The result ended United’s 23-game unbeaten league run at Elland Road yet despite the defeat, the boss wasn’t too disheartened with what he had seen from his side, telling the media: “We had more possession, we had more passes, we had more expected goals, we had more shots, we had more shots on target, we had more big chances created, we had more big chances missed, we had more corners.

“In each and every aspect, we were the better side today. Football is decided by goals. We missed too many of the good chances today in the first half and the second half. Yes, at this level, each of the little mistakes is punished.”

From there, eight senior players headed off away on international duty with work to be done in the World Cup qualifiers and returned for what would prove to be a frustrating afternoon over the Pennines at Turf Moor where Leeds were edged out by Burnley, despite once again dominating the statistics.

Without a win in three, attentions quickly turned to the home meeting with West Ham United. Elland Road at the best of times can be a cauldron of noise and outpouring of emotion but there is something even more special about a Friday night encounter under the lights.

The Hammers were quick to find that out, within three minutes to be precise, as Aaronson was well placed to pounce and grab the opener from close range. If the famous old ground was rocking, the roof then very nearly came off as defender Joe Rodon made it two with a towering header beyond Alphonse Areola on the quarter of an hour mark.

The evening’s first goalscorer was impressive throughout and very nearly made it three, seeing a strike rattle the crossbar following the a mazy run from inside his own half. West Ham did pull one back late on but the Whites saw out the victory. After the full-time whistle, Player of the Match Aaronson highlighted the importance of the fans in helping United over the line.

“It was a great atmosphere,” the American said. “It is amazing to score early. A couple of times last year we had a couple early goals to start the game and it was huge for us. It was a relief for me, to be honest with you. I kept at it. I worked this whole week at my finishing again and, yeah, I am proud of my mentality and I am proud of the group.

“I think defensively we were good today. We handled a lot of crossing situations from them. And listen, West Ham is a team that has a ton of quality so it was definitely a difficult game. The message all week was late minutes in the game, stay on top of it and get the result which we needed today.”

Farke’s men ended the month with 11 points taken from their opening nine outings, sitting 15th – crucially three positions above the relegation zone with a challenging looking November looming just around the corner.

Ampadu’s all-action display secures Hisense Player of the Match award - Leeds United
Description

Ethan Ampadu was voted Leeds United’s Hisense Player of the Match by supporters following the Whites’ hard-fought 1-1 draw against Tottenham Hotspur at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The skipper produced another commanding display at the heart of Daniel Farke’s side, helping Leeds earn a deserved point in North London with an influential all-round performance.

Ampadu played the full 90 minutes and was central to Leeds’ efforts both in and out of possession. The Welsh international recorded 67 touches and completed 42 passes, whilst also making nine carries for a total carrying distance of 90.4 metres.

Defensively, the Leeds captain was once again immense, registering 13 defensive contributions across the contest. Ampadu won two tackles, made three interceptions, produced two clearances and completed five recoveries, whilst also winning seven duels during a combative midfield battle.

His most important contribution came in the second half when he bravely won the penalty that earned Leeds a share of the spoils. Rising to meet the ball inside the Tottenham area, Ampadu was kicked in the head by Mathys Tel as he attempted the header, with the referee pointing to the spot after reviewing the challenge.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin stepped up to calmly convert the resulting penalty and secure an important away point for the Whites.

Supporters overwhelmingly backed Ampadu in the Hisense Player of the Match vote, with the Leeds captain receiving 66% of the votes cast.

Joe Rodon finished second with 16%, whilst Ao Tanaka claimed 6% and Jaka Bijol received 4%.

Daniel Farke: I couldn’t be prouder of my players - Leeds United
Description

Leeds United extended their long unbeaten run away from home in the Premier League, drawing 1-1 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to complete the set of weekend fixtures which saw the Whites secure top-flight safety.

The hosts went ahead just after half-time through Mathys Tel before Dominic Calvert-Lewin smashed home his 14th goal of the season in all competitions from the penalty spot to claim a point.

Speaking after the match, Daniel Farke gave his thoughts to the media, stating that his team would always put in maximum effort even though they had already confirmed their Premier League status.

He said: “If you put the white shirt on and represent this passionate and amazing club, you have all to play for because we represent Leeds United.

“We want to make our supporters proud. And for that, if you are then not highly motivated in a Premier League game, you have chosen the wrong club and I would never allow anything less than just 100 per cent.

“I think this is also what we have shown today because out of many reasons it was, of course, a difficult game but the big pressure after yesterday’s results was a bit away.

“Tottenham, back in good shape, back-to-back wins. I expected them also to play with confidence. Also, the stadium was on it.

“They liked also to have a bit more positivity right now. And for us, it was a difficult week because we had to play today without many key players.”

The boss was asked directly about what survival means and how proud he is of the team for achieving it with three games to play.

“Perhaps we should have been on even more points right now but I couldn't be prouder of my players! And for that, whatever happens, a fantastic achievement.

“But exactly what we have shown today, we also want to show this and to spoil our supporters even a bit more in our final home game.

“And then also, of course, on the final game day, if we can extend our unbeaten run and keep going, would be great. And we will fight till the end for each and every point till the last game day.”

Leeds United’s superb unbeaten run in the Premier League continued with a hard-earned point away at Tottenham Hotspur.

Behind after the break in the capital, a composed Dominic Calvert-Lewin penalty ensured the spoils were shared, taking the England international’s tally to 14 for the campaign in all competitions.

With top-flight safety secured after results elsewhere over the weekend, the Whites went into the clash in North London with two changes to the team that faced Burnley last time out, giving starts to attackers Brenden Aaronson and Daniel James.

On the front foot inside the opening few minutes, a cross from the Welsh international was met by Pascal Struijk who, under pressure from several Spurs shirts, glanced wide of the upright.

From the hosts’ first venture forward, Richarlison raced through on goal after beating the offside trap though the retreating Joe Rodon did exceptionally well to recover and make a crucial last-ditch intervention.

Down the other end, the defender went close to opening the scoring against his former club, latching onto Aaronson’s deep cross and forcing a fine diving save from Antonin Kinsky who clawed the ball off the line.

Karl Darlow’s fist real involvement came on the half-hour mark as the goalkeeper sprung to his right to gather Richarlison’s testing effort from inside the area. From a corner moments later, Struijk stood his ground to block a fizzing Pedro Porro drive from 20 yards.

The home team then had an opportunity after a scramble in the middle ensued from a whipped in Mathys Tel delivery which resulted in Joao Palhinha lashing over the upright, before Rodrigo Bentancur steered a header wide of the far post in the final action of the opening period.

HALF TIME: Tottenham Hotspur 0-0 Leeds United

Unchanged at the interval, the Whites emerged for the second period though fell behind when Tel curled a powerful strike from the edge of the area into the top corner.

A first enforced alteration in personnel came as Sebastiaan Bornauw entered the action, replacing the injured Struijk in a switch to the backline.

Looking to respond, a deep Ao Tanaka cross almost found Jaka Bijol towards the back post though the ball skidded off the surface and ran through to a grateful Kinsky.

Approaching the hour mark, Richarlison spurned a great opportunity to extend the hosts’ advantage, lashing over after good initial work by Randal Kolo Muani down the right.

Clever link up play between Calvert-Lewin and James then resulted in the England international laying the ball off for his teammate who was unable to hit the target from range.

That was the final involvement for the Welsh attacker who made way alongside Aaronson for Willy Gnonto and Lukas Nmecha respectively.

After a lengthy VAR check, United were awarded a penalty after skipper Ethan Ampadu was volleyed out of the air contesting a looping ball with Tel.

Calvert-Lewin stepped up and did the rest, hammering a fierce spot kick beyond the despairing dive of Kinsky and into the back of the net!

Leeds almost completed the turnaround almost immediately after the restart as Nmecha latched onto Calvert-Lewin’s flick but saw a first-time attempt blocked allowing the Tottenham stopper to gather.

A final change in stoppage time saw Sean Longstaff replace Tanaka and the midfielder nearly won it with an effort that came crashing off the underside of the bar but it wasn’t to be, with the point in the capital extending United’s impressive unbeaten run to seven matches.

Preview: Tottenham Hotspur vs Leeds United - Leeds United
Description

Leeds United can confirm their Premier League status on Monday evening with a victory over Tottenham Hotspur in North London.

The Whites go into the encounter in the capital in fine form in the top-flight, unbeaten in six matches dating back to the start of March.

In recent weeks, after an emphatic 3-0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers was followed up with a last-gasp draw at AFC Bournemouth, Daniel Farke’s side continued their momentum with a 3-1 triumph over Burnley last time out.

An Anton Stach long-range effort fired United into the lead before goals from Noah Okafor and Dominic Calvert-Lewin after the break sealed an important three points at Elland Road.

Leeds sit 14th in the standings with 43 points collected prior to the final three league encounters of the season, three places above a resurgent Spurs side who have found form in recent weeks under new boss Roberto De Zerbi.

After drawing with Brighton, Tottenham have picked up vital victories away at Wolves and Aston Villa in their bid to avoid the drop.

In the West Midlands, Conor Gallagher and Richarlison were on target to help last season’s Europa League winners out of the bottom three.

In 104 meetings between the two clubs, United have picked up 33 wins while the shares have been spoiled on 29 occasions.

Action from the Tottenham Hotspur stadium gets underway at 8pm.

Ahead of the match, Okafor spoke exclusively to Premier League Productions and said: “I think at the moment they are in a good mood, they have had back-to-back wins.

“I think they were struggling a little bit but this is football. Everyone in the Premier League is competitive. Everyone can beat everyone.”

Edmund Riemer: It will be a huge test - Leeds United
Description

Leeds United travel to London on Monday night to face Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League, seeking a seventh successive game without defeat.

With just three games left of the campaign, the Whites will be aiming to build on their strong run of form and finish on a high as they take on Roberto De Zerbi's side away from home.

Ahead of the clash, assistant manager Edmund Riemer spoke to the media.

"I think it will be a huge test, in terms of Spurs, they will go for it. I know the manager managed to get them out of the relegation places so we are fully aware that we need to be up for it and we want to maintain our top form.

"This is best form we have been in throughout the season now, and we want to finish the season on a high and also as soon as possible seal it also mathematically."

On De Zerbi's impact since joining Tottenham, Riemer stated: "That's not for me to judge from the outside, but I think he has an impact on the players.

"I think they follow him, what he says, what he wants to do I think he's quite clear in that, and gives him the confidence and you can see it.

"If you see our previous seasons it has to seem that every season has to be a special season to achieve what we want to achieve," the German added on the prospect of mathematical safety come Monday.

"To achieve now on being on 43 points, it's truly something special, especially if you see what the promoted teams did the last years.

"Especially the form that we picked up, we had to come through it to be now with 43 points with three games to go. I think in the form table we are the second best team at the moment so it's massive here and credit to the players."

Edmund Riemer provides fitness update ahead of Spurs clash - Leeds United
Description

Filling in for Daniel Farke, assistant manager Edmund Riemer spoke to the media at Thorp Arch, giving an update on the availability of the Whites’ squad for the trip to Tottenham Hotspur.

United head to the capital on Monday night after last weekend’s home victory over Burnley, though they will be without in-form attacker Noah Okafor who faces a spell on the sidelines with a calf strain.

Beginning his press conference, Riemer started with an encouraging update on the boss, saying: “I am pretty sure he will be alright, yes!”

The coach then discussed Gabriel Gudmundsson’s recovery from injury, adding: “I think, as the manager already mentioned last week, Gabi will be out for this week and then we need to assess him on a daily basis so hopefully he can be with us as soon as possible.

“Then we have got another one with Noah who picked up a calf strain so he will miss the next two games. We are hopeful that he will be available back for the last game.

“He sustained an injury after the FA Cup game in the calf. It was the right calf where he got a contusion. And, in the Burnley game, the left calf.

“So likely will be out the next two games and, as I said, we are hopeful that he will be back for the last game.”

Finally, there was an update on the team’s defensive options, with Edmund explaining: “Pascal is not going to train today with us. He has a hip contusion, so got a hit. He will train individually but we are hopeful that he will be available.”
