Bristol Rovers player ratings vs Tottenham U21s: Cavegn gets brace in bonkers EFL Trophy draw - Bristol Live
Description

Bristol Rovers recovered from 3-0 down to draw 4-4 against Tottenham Hotspur Under-21s before winning the penalty shootout in the EFL Trophy

Bristol Rovers took two points from their EFL Trophy opener after a frantic game at the Mem against Tottenham Hotspur Under-21s, ending 4-4 before the Gas won the resulting penalty shootout 5-4.

After seeing a chance from Ollie Dewsbury cleared off the line, Rovers conceded three goals within six minutes as Tottenham finished clinically.

The Gas managed to get a goal back before half-time as a defensive mishap was taken advantage of by Ellis Harrison, who was then replaced at half-time by Fabrizio Cavegn. The Swiss got his first goal for the Pirates, however Spurs restored their two-goal advantage when Tynan Thompson finished from a tight angle.

The visitors found themselves down to 10 men soon after as goalkeeper Samual Archer took out Ryan Howley, who was through on goal. Isaac Hutchinson then added a third direct from the awarded free-kick before Cavegn levelled things with his second.

Darrell Clarke's side had chances to win the game but had to settle for the penalty shootout which they won 5-4 after Cavegn, Luke Thomas, Hutchinson, Kamil Conteh and Taylor Moore scored from the spot.

Here's how we rated the players on a bonkers night in north Bristol...

Brad Young - 6

Will have to watch a replay to judge if the goalkeeper could have done better with any of the goals but it didn't seem like it. In the moment, all four seemed pretty clinical. Two good saves in the shootout though on his competitive debut for the club.

Joel Senior (off for Tom English 88') - 6

Despite his team conceding four goals, none were directly his fault. The right-back offered quality down the right and on another day might have come away with an assist or two.

Taylor Moore - 5

One of a handful who had a poor first half but improved in the second. Good penalty too.

Dan Ellison (off for Kamil Conteh 36') - 4.5

Unfortunate to be sacrificed as Darrell Clarke looked to change formation with Rovers 3-0 down. A tough first competitive start for the young defender.

Clinton Mola - 5

Won't want to see Tottenham's first goal back. Poor first half but improved after the three goals shipped in a flash.

Bryant Bilongo - 5.5

Didn't cover himself in much glory defensively but got into some good positions, just need a bit more quality on his crosses at times.

Ryan Howley - 6.5

Lively in the middle as the game went on. Another who didn't have the best of first halves but ended it with the assist for Ellis Harrison's goal and was a handful in the second half. A shame to see him fire over the crossbar in the shootout.

Luke Thomas - 6

A few cheap giveaways but got in behind the Spurs defence plenty of times. Another penalty scorer.

Isaac Hutchinson - 7

Underwhelming in the first half but a real livewire in the second. Scored a lovely free-kick and kept things ticking in the middle for Rovers.

Ellis Harrison (off for Fabrizio Cavegn 46') - 7

Scored a well-taken goal with virtually his last kick of the game. Had the ball in the net within the first minute but was flagged offside. Another 45 minutes for his tank.

Ollie Dewsbury - 6

Lively display from the 17-year-old but he will feel as though he should have come away with at least one goal. Had a glorious chance at 0-0 but saw his effort cleared off the line before a few sniffs in the second half.

Substitutes:

Kamil Conteh (on for Ellison 36') - 7

A welcome addition as Darrell Clarke opted to change formation after conceding three early goals. A presence in the middle as the 22-year-old's good run of form continues.

Fabrizio Cavegn (on for Harrison 46') - 9

Scored his first two goals for Rovers which will give the new arrival plenty of confidence. A nice penalty too. He should really have walked away with the matchball though if we're being hypercritical.

Tom English (on for Joel Senior 88') - N/A

On for his competitive first team debut late on. What a moment for the young right-back.

Bristol Rovers vs Tottenham Hotspur Under-21s live: Gas make eight changes from Cambridge win - Bristol Live
Description

Hello and welcome to this evening's live blog as Bristol Rovers turn their attention to the EFL Trophy as they begin the group stage with a home clash against Tottenham Hotspur Under-21s.

Rovers faced Spurs' Under-21s side in this competition last season, an entertaining clash which ended 3-3 before Tottenham took the extra point after winning the penalty shootout.

That evening they had stars like Mikey Moore and Will Lankshear involved, both of whom scored, but the pair are currently on loan at Rangers and Oxford United respectively.

Darrell Clarke has admitted that changes will be made but he still wants to remain competitive and build that winning habit.

Follow our live blog for build-up, team news, updates and post-match reaction with kick-off scheduled for 7pm.

Bristol Rovers verdict: Kofi Shaw does Gas academy proud in bizarre game with Tottenham U21s

Description

Matt Taylor's assessment of Bristol Rovers' 3-3 draw with Tottenham Hotspur Under-21s being a "strange game" is pretty accurate. From an entertainment perspective, spectators can hardly compain when there's been six goals but it wasn't, and never was going to be, a clash that many in attendance would have been overly fussed about the final outcome. What it did do though is teach us more about a number of players, particularly new faces.

Rovers started brightly and were good value for their lead as Isaac Hutchinson scored his first Gas goal after eight minutes with a lovely, low finish. However, the contest started to go stale from 20 minutes onward as Tottenham's youngsters grew in confidence, at times knocking the ball around better than any League One visitors will this season. A cracking goal from Will Lankshear to equalise was deserved but the remaining 19 minutes of the first half saw very little of note.

The second half seemed to spark the match into life though as Spurs took the lead twice with the Gas knocking them back with two responses via goals from Kofi Shaw and Luke McCormick. There were elements of a basketball match as both teams were able to get up and down each end before the contest was then to be concluded with a penalty shootout for the bragging rights of an extra point.

Jake Garrett was the unlucky individual to see his spot kick saved as the shootout went to sudden death as Tottenham took the secondary point but very few, if any, fans would have felt aggrieved.

The EFL Trophy is, and will remain in its current format, an extremely controversial competition which made the attendance of around 1,500 still a slight surprise given the number of supporters who expressed their stance against it online pre-match. However, what the game did do is hand opportunities to players on the fringes of the first-team or from the club's youth set up that Gasheads haven't been able to see much of in the flesh.

Kofi Shaw was undoubtedly the star of those players on the fringes (more on him later) while opportunities were handed to the likes of Micah Anthony, Matt Hall and Lino Sousa for his debut. Although going into the contest it felt a bit like a game the Gas didn't need, despite their desires to progress in the competition, come the full-time whistle it actually proved to be a fairly useful exercise.

Will it define Rovers' season? Of course not. Will it go down in the memory books? Not really. Yet, there were still lessons learned and talking points to take...

A game you go into blind

How do you prepare for a game against an Under-21s side? It's such a peculiar situation, especially when the game is competitive. Within Tottenham's squad they had individuals who have only known academy football while the likes of teenage sensation Mikey Moore have had first-team experience with the 17-year-old winger a substitute in their final two Premier League matches of last season against Manchester City and Sheffield United.

Spurs were always going to be able to knock the ball around well as a result of their Premier League education. However, it was always going to be about whether or not they could deal with the physicality that comes when playing a League One first-team. Admittedly, Rovers had some youngsters of their own with little senior experience.

Three days after a robust, scrap of a game against Rotherham United, there's seemingly very little genuine preparation you can do, particularly considering that Saturday's trip to Stockport County will have undoubtedly been a priority.

"You try and predict a little bit of a formation," Matt Taylor revealed when asked about preparing his side. "There's a few personnel who have played at a higher level and when they play at a higher level you generally get to see a bit more of their game. You get a bit of a feel for it. But you're going into it a little bit blind, to be honest with you which is fine because sometimes you can't always give the players everything and then they've got to figure it out for themselves.

"The biggest one tonight, and I know the numbers here tonight in terms of attendances were less, but it just went flat in that first half. That's not going to be us this season. We don't want it to be us this season. If we feel ourselves going towards that we've got to snap or slap or prod or poke ourselves back into life and not just wait for half-time or an intervention to do that. Sometimes it's got to come from within from the pitch first.

"I'm quite positive with the way the second half went because that's what I wanted our game to look like from start to finish."

Kofi puts himself in contention for County

For one final time, it is worth mentioning the display of 17-year-old academy product Kofi Shaw who was Rovers' best player out on the right-hand side. The teenager's stock has risen rather rapidly on the back of getting his first-team debut from the bench on the final day at Wigan Athletic in April to being a stand out performer in pre-season for the Gas and then getting chances in the League Cup and EFL Trophy against Cardiff and Tottenham Under-21s respectively.

This was always going to be seen as a perfect game to bring the teenager into but, having not made the matchday squad for the opening two league games, there were question marks surrounding how close the prodigy was to inserting himself into the League One picture, especially with the depth currently available in midfield. However, any queries were responded to on Tuesday night as Shaw sparkled on the pitch.

Every time Taylor has been asked about the teenager, he's made the point that people must remember that he has to be managed carefully because of his age but you always get the sense that he's well aware that this is an asset in the making.

Scoring Rovers' second goal with a clinical finish following a scramble as a result of a corner, Shaw was a livewire down the right and used trickery and tenacity up and down his flank. Although the Gas have some outstanding players on their day, there aren't many who can truly get bums off seats but that's exactly what the 17-year-old did. Now, he's played himself into contention for the weekend's trip to Stockport.

"I thought he was our best player," Taylor admitted. "I thought he was the shining light from start to finish. Everyone improved through the second half but he really showed what we want from a Bristol Rovers player and the reason I took him off was because he's put himself in contention for the weekend.

"We are in a position now where we're looking at different dynamics in different positions and I just thought his performance really stood for something tonight. Out of everyone on that pitch, and I know people improved at different stages, from start to finish I thought he was our best player so I'm pleased that he's had a good night.

"We are still conscious that he is still only 17 so you do have to manage him a little bit and he's running as hard as he possibly can. Now we want to keep him in and around the first team and see if we can get him some game time and then see how he plays in a Rotherham or Stockport away or something like that.

"You probably want your league debut to be in a more comfortable surrounding or environment but the way he played tonight, we're not scared of throwing him in."

Players not playing themselves into plans

While Shaw shone, other players looking to break into Taylor's plans for the league probably didn't quite do enough to really give him something to think about. Currently, Connor Taylor is probably the player who can feel most hard done by that he's not currently starting in League One but that is amid the outstanding starts of Taylor Moore, James Wilson and Clinton Mola as a unit. The 22-year-old is knocking on the door but is certainly capable of playing significantly better than he did on Tuesday night.

That's not to say he was poor, nowhere near. But the centre-back didn't quite dominate at the back as he has done in recent matches, suggesting that there may still be a few weeks until he breaks back into the league side.

McCormick got himself a goal and was lively but you would imagine is still seen as an impact substitute while Anthony is still in the development category so isn't expected to be seen until Rovers' next cup clash.

You've also got Sousa who made his debut at left-back who grew into the game but Bryant Bilongo has impressed so far and deserves to keep his place.

Up front, Chris Martin played the first half as he continues to build up his fitness while Ruel Sotiriou played the second. The latter had a couple of chances to net his first Rovers goal and, you would suggest, is the more likely to start of the two with Promise Omochere having started against Rotherham last weekend.

Goalkeeper plans as Hall makes long-awaited debut

Having signed in July 2023, Matt Hall finally got his first competitive outing for Rovers as he experienced a mixed debut. Distribution-wise, the 21-year-old was solid and looked comfortable with his feet. He also made some decent saves in the second half, demonstrating a strong palm. However, unfortunately all of the positive aspects to his game will be overshadowed by two poor moments that led to Spurs' second half goals.

Every goalkeeper gets beaten at their near-post every now and then but that won't mean the youngster will be frustrated with the way in which he conceded Moore's strike but playing a free-kick straight to Damola Ajayi to then score was particularly poor.

With respect, even with a worldie display, the former Southampton youth 'keeper was never going to do enough to dislodge Josh Griffiths' place as number one but it did possibly highlight the fact that bringing in another goalkeeper would be ideal this transfer window, especially when 17-year-old academy shot stopper Mattijis Korswagen, who was an unknown going into Tuesday night, was included on the bench.

However, Taylor admitted post-match that the teenager merely came in to ensure Griffiths got a full night off while also revealing that adding another goalkeeper is a target for the remainder of the transfer window.

"No," the Rovers manager said when asked if Korswagen is being looked at to be a third-choice. "Josh was physically at a bit of a low after Saturday. His workload has been extremely high so we wanted to give him the night off. He could've sat on the bench and been a part of it but when you're doing your boots back up and putting your kit on and doing your warm up - yeah, we just wanted him to be deloaded a bit tonight.

"We are looking for another goalkeeper in our ranks. Watch this space to see how that unfolds really.

"In a perfect and ideal world," Taylor added on whether that would be a more experienced profile, "but I don't think that's obtainable with what we've got left."

Matt Taylor sings Kofi Shaw's praises as Bristol Rovers prodigy stars against Tottenham U21s

Description

Matt Taylor has admitted that Kofi Shaw is now in contention to be involved in Bristol Rovers' League One trip to Stockport County this weekend on the back of a stand-out display in the Gas' 3-3 draw with Tottenham Under-21s in the EFL Trophy on Tuesday night.

The 17-year-old was one of 10 changes to the side that drew 0-0 at Rotherham United on Saturday with Isaac Hutchinson the only survivor. Shaw's two previous first-team appearances had been from the bench against Wigan Athletic on the final day of last season and Cardiff City in the Carabao Cup a week prior.

In a bizarre match against Tottenham's youth side, Rovers drew first blood as Hutchinson scored his first Gas goal early on with a precise, low finish as the hosts started on top. However, their Premier League-educated visitors grew into the contest and equalised before half-time as Will Lankshear fired home a cracking goal.

Spurs then took the lead early in the second half as Mikey Moore, who has two Premier League appearances for the North London outfit's first-team, beat goalkeeper Matt Hall from a tight angle with Shaw then smashing in an equaliser from a corner.

Goals from Damola Ajayi and then Luke McCormick saw the match finish 3-3 with Tottenham taking the extra point after winning the subsequent penalty shootout 6-5 as Jake Garrett saw his sudden-death effort saved.

"Not just the goal, I thought he was our best player," Taylor declared when asked about Shaw's display. "I thought he was the shining light from start to finish. Everyone improved through the second half but he really showed what we want from a Bristol Rovers player and the reason I took him off was because he's put himself in contention for the weekend.

"I brought him off with a view to Saturday," the Rovers manager added.

Playing on the right, the teenager dazzled down the flank with some, at times, outrageous skill while also demonstrating a real tenacity and eagerness to win back the ball for his side, putting his impressive engine to good use.

On the opposite side, former trialist Micah Anthony also did well in spells with the 20-year-old also the beneficiary of a box of tricks while Chris Martin and then Ruel Sotiriou led the line in alternate halves as the pair continue to work their way back up to full fitness.

After an outstanding pre-season, it was inevitable that Shaw would eventually get a chance in the first-team with the EFL Trophy seemingly the perfect competition to hand the academy product an opportunity in. However, although he could well make the matchday 18 at Edgely Park on Saturday, Taylor did warn that playing a Premier League academy side is completely different to playing a team like Stockport.

"Tottenham Under-21s is totally different to Stockport and Rotherham," the Gas boss declared. "So we have to put that into context of who performs well in that type of game and what gets people going. But fitness-wise it gives me an idea of where they are and lets me learn a bit more about their combinations, how they play their positions, what their mindset is, because there's still so much newness to the whole squad and the players involved tonight especially.

"I know we've had pre-season together but I'm only seeing them play properly for the first time really and seeing what it does to their game. I'll have learned a little bit more but I guarantee when they go into the league campaign and the league fixtures that they'll learn a lot more about themselves as well."

Bristol Rovers player ratings vs Tottenham U21s: Kofi Shaw stars in entertaining EFL Trophy tie

Matt Hall - 5

Not much to do in the first half and couldn't have done anything about the goal. However, second half was eventful in both ways for the stand-in goalkeeper on his first appearance for Bristol Rovers since signing last summer. Despite a couple of decent saves, the 21-year-old was beaten at his near-post for Tottenham Under-21s' second goal and played the ball straight to goalscorer Damola Ajayi for the third. Largely good distribution too but the mistakes will unfortunately overshadow what he did well.

Joel Senior - 6

Based on his first handful of appearances for Rovers both competitively and in friendlies, Senior evidently likes to get in behind and put a cross in. A couple of decent deliveries. Defensively not his or any of his colleagues at the back's best nights.

Connor Taylor - 6

Solid in spells but the centre-back is capable of playing much better. That is of course because his level is extremely high. Provided a physical presence at the back but won't be happy conceding three goals and it there could have been more.

Michael Forbes - 6

Similarly to the above, won't be happy the goals conceded but provided a presence at the back. Also credited with the assist for Kofi Shaw's goal but found himself in the referee's book for a foul in the build-up to Tottenham's second.

Lino Sousa - 6

Got in behind on a couple of occasions, linking up nicely with Micah Anthony at times. Evidently an intelligent player from the way that he anticipated the ball when making interceptions. Decent start offensively and got better as the game went on.

Jake Garrett - 7

A lot to like about the midfielder on the ball. Silky, and solid. Always tracked back for the cause and got himself involved. Was also put on a number of corners and put in some eye-catching deliveries. Unlucky to be the one whose penalty proved decisive for the wrong reasons. Good shift during the 90.

Isaac Hutchinson - 8

A goal and an assist, you can't ask for much more from an attack-minded midfielder. Not that the summer arrival has been poor in any way in the two league games so far, but he hasn't demonstrated his capabilities in the way he would have liked, making his performance this evening pleasing indeed.

A lovely finish for the goal to hand the Gas the lead, Hutchinson oozed class on the ball when he had space to run into, getting his assist via a cross for Luke McCormick's equaliser to make the tie 3-3. Hopefully we'll start to see more of his best in the league after this one.

Luke McCormick - 7

Despite being lively, McCormick hadn't quite made the impact he would have liked before getting his goal, finding the back of the net with a lovely header. The forward was then unlucky not to get a second, seeing a shot blocked and then a follow-up saved.

Kofi Shaw (off for Ollie Dewsbury 84') - 8

Outstanding. The 17-year-old was a real handful against players that were closer to his age than most of his teammates, being an absolute menace to defend against. Skillful and smart, the teenager played with a maturity well above his age range.

The goal was the least he deserved, equalising to make the scoreline 2-2, bundling home a loose ball from a corner with a firm finish. If that was an audition to be involved in Rovers' league plans, I'm not sure what else he could have done.

Micah Anthony - 7

Extremely energetic down the left for Rovers, evidently playing with a point to prove. Plenty of tricks up his sleeve, frequently skipping past defenders. End product will need a bit of work naturally but a really exciting talent who consistently tried to get himself involved in any flurries forward.

Chris Martin (off for Ruel Sotiriou 46') - 6

Had one decent opportunity which he will have felt he should have done better with, sliding onto a cross and guiding it just wide. Tried to throw himself about but doesn't seem fully fit yet, hence the running drills at half-time and the substitution.

Substitutes:

Ruel Sotiriou (on 46') - 6

Will be frustrated he didn't get on the scoresheet having hit the post and missed a few other chances in the second half. Looks a real handful to deal with. Excited to see how he gets on once fully fit.

Ollie Dewsbury (on 84') - N/A

Came on too late to make a genuine impact but got himself involved and offered fresh legs up front. Nice little cameo for the 16-year-old.

Bristol Rovers 3-3 Tottenham Hotspur U21s recap: Kofi Shaw stars in entertaining EFL Trophy tie - Bristol Live
Description

Hello and welcome to this evening's live blog as Bristol Rovers host Tottenham Hotspur Under-21s in their first group stage match of the EFL Trophy.

It's been a solid start to the new campaign for the Gas who have four points from their opening two league matches against Northampton Town and Rotherham United while they put in a spirited performance in defeat to Championship side Cardiff City in the Carabao Cup.

Tonight they begin their campaign in a third competition with the usual controversy surrounding the EFL Trophy still in tact, particularly given that Rovers kick things off against an academy side.

Spurs Under-21s won Premier League 2 last season but, as is always the case going into these games, it's very tough to pinpoint exactly what to expected against a team full of talented youngsters who have very little experience of playing men's football.

The duo also have League One Exeter City and League Two Swindon Town in their group with Matt Taylor declaring that, although he'll make changes for this game, the Rovers manager is keen to see his side progress to the knockout stages.

We'll have live updates throughout the evening with kick-off scheduled for 7pm.

Bristol Rovers predicted team vs Tottenham U21s: Sousa in line for debut with changes expected

Description

In terms of fixtures supporters are least bothered by over the course of the season, this one admittedly may rank highest and it's only game number four of the campaign for Bristol Rovers.

Rovers host Premier League giants Tottenham Hotspur's Under-21s in the ever-controversial EFL Trophy this evening, attracting limited interest from Gasheads with many still of the mindset that the competition should be boycotted while in its current setup.

Tonight is game one of three in the group stage with a trip to League Two Swindon Town (October 8) and a final match at home to League One rivals Exeter City (October 29) to follow with the two highest-ranking teams progressing to the knockout stages.

The reward of a Wembley final and the chance to lift silverware will always be attractive but the route remains one that very few pay much notice of, particularly in the early stages.

However, away from what spectators may think about the competition, it offers Matt Taylor another opportunity to rotate his team and hand minutes to players on the fringes of his League One set up with the Gas manager currently benefitting from having a near fully available squad to pick from.

Last week's Carabao Cup tie against Championship side Cardiff City offered an indication of who could come back in with Taylor making six changes for that occasion from the side that started against Northampton Town in the league three days prior with a number of those players not involved in the matchday squad that faced Rotherham United on Saturday.

Only the Rovers manager himself will know what to expect in regards to a starting line up this evening to face what is essentially an academy side with very little or no experience of men's football. However, wholesale changes are expected and it wouldn't come as a surprise if the average age of the Gas' starting 11 ends up being similar to that of Spurs'.

It's another tough one to call, but here's how we think Rovers might set up at the Mem this evening...

Goalkeeper and defence

Could this finally be the game that sees Matt Hall play in a competitive match for the Gas? You would think so. Rovers currently have the 21-year-old and West Brom loanee Josh Griffiths as their options in between the sticks having sent Jed Ward out on loan to Forest Green Rovers, meaning they're particularly light in between the sticks. It could well be that they bring in a more experienced number two before the transfer window closes but those are the current options.

Griffiths has been oustanding in a Gas shirt so far with Saturday's goalless draw at Rotherham undoubtedly the 22-year-old's best competitive performance for his loan side so far, producing a couple of outrageous saves in the first half at the New York Stadium.

However, Taylor admitted post-match that he may well need to give Griffiths a rest just to keep him fresh ahead of what looks to be a seriously tough game at Stockport County on Saturday afternoon which offers Hall a good opportunity.

The 21-year-old was brought in as third-choice last summer following his release from Southampton, for whom he didn't make a senior appearance but did play for the Saints' Under-21s in this competition. Hall is yet to feature in a competitive game for the Gas having played the second half of Rovers' 4-2 friendly win at Melksham Town last month. The young shot stopper has waited patiently for an opportunity and could well finally get it this evening.

Ahead of him, the main debate at the moment regarding line ups is whether or not the Gas will set up with a back-three or four with this new-look Rovers side demonstrating flexibility in that department so far. The players that need minutes tend to be individuals based further up the pitch and so that suggests that Taylor may well opt to return to a back-four.

You would expect the Gas' 14th and latest summer signing Lino Sousa to be one of the first names on the team sheet in order for the Rovers manager to get a good first proper look at the 19-year-old left-back who joined on loan from Aston Villa last Wednesday but didn't make the matchday squad to face Rotherham. A physical clash against the Millers certainly would have been throwing the teenager in at the deep end for a debut and so this game looks a much more adequate opportunity to ease him in.

On the opposite flank, Joel Senior didn't get off the bench at the New York Stadium so is subsequently expected to start at right-back, especially given that Jack Hunt is still injured and Luke Thomas only drops deeper when he's playing as a wing-back.

In between the pair, Michael Forbes seems to be a given who impressed in spells against Cardiff but didn't make the bench for Rotherham which will give the West Ham loanee motivation to impress. Alongside him, Taylor could slot in Dan Ellison for his Rovers debut after joining from Chippenham Town over the summer but the 19-year-old is currently expected to head out on loan before the window closes.

Therefore, you could certainly see Connor Taylor getting the nod for this one with the 22-year-old seemingly doing everything he can to get into the starting line up in the league. The colossal defender was outstanding against Cardiff, playing the full 90 minutes, but still missed out on the starting line up on Saturday with the trio of James Wilson, Taylor Moore and Clinton Mola doing exceptionally well in the opening two league clashes. Taylor is very much knocking on the door there but may need another 90 minutes here just to keep him ticking over until an opportunity to slot into the league side arises.

Midfield

Assuming Rovers are going back to a 4-2-3-1, it seems inevitable that Jake Garrett and Jamie Lindsay will come back into the starting 11 having impressed alongside each other against Cardiff. The former was defensively outstanding in South Wales but is yet to make an appearance in the league having been an unused substitute against both Northampton and Rotherham.

As for Lindsay, the 28-year-old seems set to be a regular for the Gas eventually but is another player who is currently victim to strength in depth elsewhere with Grant Ward and Kamil Conteh the current first-choice central pairing. The former Millers maestro impressed from the bench against his former side on Saturday and it does feel as though, soon or later, the experienced midfielder will have done enough to force his way into the league line up.

Ahead of them, this feels like a golden opportunity for Kofi Shaw to start for the first time in a competitive first-team game. The 17-year-old won't be going out on loan and is part of Taylor's plans according to the manager himself but will find involvement in a league squad tricky to achieve with the current options available.

Based on his pre-season peformances, there's no doubt that the teenager has an abundance of talent, albeit still raw, and this feels like the perfect opportunity for him to rise further in his manager's estimations.

Flanking Shaw in an attacking midfield trio, Micah Anthony is another player who you would assume will earn his first start for the club on the left while Ruel Sotiriou may well be squeezed in there somehow too. Despite impressing on trial and earning himself a contract, Anthony is still going to be a part of that development bracket and isn't expected to come into the league picture anytime soon. However, the 20-year-old, who came off the bench at Cardiff for his senior debut, is another individual where this clash seems a perfect opportunity.

As for Sotiriou, the 23-year-old got his first start for the Gas on Saturday but looked leggy as the first half wore on before eventually coming off in the 48th minute. Taylor admitted he should have done the straight swap for Luke McCormick at half-time post-match.

Having scored 12 goals for Leyton Orient last season, the Cyprus international is expected to be a key player for Rovers this term but still needs to be built up after suffering a calf tear soon after joining which effectively delayed his preparations for the new campaign. The expectation is that he will play some sort of role tonight.

You could also argue that this is a good opportunity for McCormick to get another start having started against Cardiff; it wouldn't be a surprise to see him named in the starting 11. Meanwhile the likes of Scott Sinclair, Luke Thomas and Isaac Hutchinson aren't expected to be risked from the off but could well come on as impact subtitutes.

Striker

Leading the line could well be Sotiriou but Taylor hinted post-match on Saturday that he may use this game as an opportunity to build up Chris Martin's fitness after Rovers' top scorer last season made his return from the bench at Rotherham.

The 35-year-old replaced Promise Omochere for the final 33 minutes of the game in South Yorkshire but had very little to make use of as the Gas struggled to create anything of note with the hosts pushing for the breakthrough.

Undoubtedly, the experienced striker is one of the best finishers in League One on the back of his 16 goals for Rovers last term and therefore the Gas need him as fit as possible swiftly in order to make an impact in the league.

Matt Taylor is expected to make a host of changes for Bristol Rovers' EFL Trophy tie against Tottenham Hotspur Under-21s tomorrow night in order to give fringe players opportunities while also handing rests to some of those who have been heavily involved in the Gas' opening trio of fixtures.

The Rovers manager made six changes from their opening League One fixture against Northampton Town for their Carabao Cup defeat at Cardiff City last Tuesday but then made just two alterations from the side that beat the Cobblers for last weekend's goalless draw at Rotherham United.

That cup tie at Cardiff saw players such as Michael Forbes, Kofi Shaw and Micah Anthony involved from either the start or the bench with the trio not involved in the matchday 18 at the New York Stadium last time out. Additionally, the Gas are expected to hand a debut to their 14th and latest summer signing Lino Sousa who arrived on a season-long loan from Aston Villa last Thursday.

Sousa also wasn't included in the matchday squad at Rotherham but did travel while handing the likes of Shaw and Anthony starts will appease Gasheads with many won over by the youngsters during pre-season.

The former remains just 17-years-old but is the latest posterboy from the academy after making his debut in the final game of last season at Wigan Athletic and seriously impressing in pre-season friendlies. Meanwhile, Anthony, 20, made his senior debut in the League Cup defeat at Cardiff having joined permanently following an impressive trial with the Gas.

Elsewhere, current second-choice goalkeeper Matt Hall could be in line for his first competitive appearance in a Rovers shirt since joining on a free transfer from Southampton last summer in order to hand Josh Griffiths a rest.

The tie may be used to give expected first-team regulars such as Chris Martin and Ruel Sotiriou minutes as they look to build up their fitness while Jamie Lindsay and Jake Garrett have both impressed in midfield despite not yet starting a league game. Regarding injuries, right-back Jack Hunt is currently the only known absentee having missed the opening trio of fixtures with a hamstring strain.

"It's a given," Taylor admitted when asked on Saturday about making changes ahead of hosting Tottenham's Under-21s. "Players who maybe didn't start today. Michael's travelled, Lino's travelled. We'll have to rest our goalkeeper who has had to work a lot today and some of the younger ones as well.

"But we want to progress. We want to put in a good performance. We're back at home. These games are difficult games because not many people watch them, so many changes, you don't know the opposition, they're totally different to what you play week in, week out but it's still an opportunity for a lot of our squad."

The Gas boss' first game in charge of Rovers actually came in this competition as they were knocked out by then-League Two side Crawley Town in the round of 32 last December having finished second in their group to West Ham United Under-21s.

It remains a controversial competition given its modern-day format that begins with a group stage with three matches before the knockout phase begins while academy sides of some of the biggest clubs in the country continue to be invited to take part.

In Spurs' Under-21s, the Gas will be hosting the reigning champions of Premier League 2 which is the top-flight for Under-21s football in England but it will be tough to fully gage what to expect from a team made up of talented youngsters with very little or no experience of playing men's football.

Alongside the North London outfit, Rovers will travel to League Two Swindon Town on October 8 and then host League One rivals Exeter City on October 29 with the top two sides in each group entering the knockout phase.
