Four things we have learned about Tottenham so far this season including a £30m concern - Spurs Web
Description

Tottenham Hotspur have shown plenty of promise under Thomas Frank, and we have already seen a glimpse of what life will be like under the Dane.

Tottenham Hotspur have enjoyed a solid start to life under new boss Thomas Frank, who replaced Europa League winner Ange Postecoglou following his sacking.

While his start as Tottenham manager has not been flawless, supporters will feel encouraged, as Frank has collected six points from a possible nine in the Premier League so far.

The Dane has Spurs sitting in fourth place, and he has impressed in stern tests against both Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain, showing his side is capable of competing with the very best.

A victory over the Citizens and a draw against the Champions League winners in ninety minutes in the Super Cup final highlights a Tottenham team that is progressing, but with clear areas to improve on.

So what exactly have we learned from Tottenham in the opening weeks of the season? Here are four things that stand out so far.

Mathys Tel must take his chance to impress at Tottenham

If there is one thing certain about this Tottenham side, it is the competition for places in attack, with Frank having a variety of options and profiles to rotate across the front line.

MORE SPURS STORIES

Brennan Johnson can comfortably play on either wing, as can Mathys Tel, Wilson Odobert and Mohammed Kudus, while Richarlison and Randal Kolo Muani offer flexibility through the middle as well as on the flanks.

Yet, when Frank submitted his UEFA Champions League squad for the league phase, Tel found himself down the pecking order, which is a concern considering Tottenham only just made his move permanent this summer with a £30m outlay.

At 20 years old, he has time to change his fortunes, but he must take every opportunity presented to him if he is to fight his way back into the squad. Djed Spence is a clear example of how to battle back into a manager’s plans.

There is no way back for Yves Bissouma

While there is still hope for Tel to climb back into contention, Yves Bissouma’s situation feels very different, as the Mali international now looks destined to leave.

His omission from both the Super Cup and Champions League squads speaks volumes, and with Joao Palhinha brought in on loan, Frank appears to have already made up his mind about the 28-year-old midfielder.

With reports of interest from Fenerbahce and the transfer window still open elsewhere, Bissouma could well depart in the coming weeks, and at this stage, it is hard to see any way back into the Tottenham fold.

Pedro Porro needs to improve defensively

Defensively, Tottenham under Frank have looked relatively strong, with two clean sheets in their opening three league matches, a foundation the manager will want to build on.

However, there remains a weakness on the right side, as Pedro Porro has already been dribbled past six times this season, more than any other defender in the league.

It is a worrying trend that underlines the Spaniard’s defensive vulnerability, and one that Frank will need to address quickly if Tottenham are to continue looking solid at the back.

Savinho signing would have transformed Tottenham’s transfer window

Tottenham’s summer business was largely positive, with six arrivals addressing key positions, yet the absence of one signing still lingers in the minds of supporters.

The biggest disappointment is undoubtedly missing out on Savinho, who was keen on a move to Tottenham, but Manchester City refused to entertain offers for the Brazilian winger.

His addition would have elevated Tottenham’s attacking threat further, adding another one-versus-one outlet and a touch of unpredictability on the flank alongside Kudus.

Tottenham’s Dejan Kulusevski has come in for huge praise from his Sweden international teammates for his gesture during the international break.

Kulusevski has been out of action with a knee injury since the start of May, which saw him miss the Europa League final.

The Swede has also missed the entirety of pre-season, with Thomas Frank and his coaching staff yet to get their first look at him in the training pitch.

According to reports, Kulusevski is not expected to be back in action until December, but the 25-year-old made a great gesture despite being on the treatment table.

Dejan Kulusevski praised for joining Sweden’s camp despite Tottenham injury

Despite not being able to train or play, Kulusevski joined up with the Swedish squad ahead of their World Cup qualifiers against Slovenia and Kosovo.

The Tottenham Hotspur man made the trip to show his support to the side, and the meaningfulness of his gesture is not lost on his teammates.

When asked about Kulusevski’s decision to join the camp, Sweden winger Ken Sema told Fotboll Skanalen: “This shows that he is an incredible leader. It means a lot. He comes in with energy, is very playful and gives us a lot of positive things. Then he is a close friend of mine. So, it means a lot to us.

MORE SPURS STORIES

“He shows that he is a leader who wants to be here and help the team, and we all see how much he is passionate about this national team. We need as much help as we can get. It is only positive.”

Kulusevski’s character hailed by Sweden centre-back

Centre-back Hjalmar Ekdal also showered praise on the Spurs man for deciding to travel to support the team.

Kulusevski has been appointed his country’s captain by John Dahl Tomasson, and Ekdal remarked that his decision to support his teammates says a lot about the former Juventus man’s commitment.

The Burnley man said about the attacking midfielder’s decision: “It’s big, actually. That says a lot about his character. He is here as a leader, but of course as one of the players.

“It means a lot. It means he has a lot of commitment and that he is passionate about this. A good captain’s job.”

Description

A failed transfer may not be the end of the story, as a fresh opportunity could now open the door for a Tottenham midfielder who almost left the club during the British summer window.

Tottenham Hotspur’s deadline day on September 1 was more about departures than arrivals, with the club sanctioning more sales than new purchases.

Bryan Gil managed to secure an £8.5million move to Spanish side Girona, while Manor Solomon found a temporary escape through a loan deal to Villarreal after a collapsed move to Crystal Palace left his future uncertain.

Yet not every planned exit materialised, with Yves Bissouma seeing his proposed transfer break down. The Mali international, who was expected to move on before the window shut, ultimately remained in north London, at least for now.

Fenerbahce show late interest in Yves Bissouma

According to a fresh report from the Daily Mail, there could still be movement on Bissouma’s future, with Turkish side Fenerbahce reportedly considering a move even though the British transfer window has closed.

Bissouma had been close to joining Galatasaray in the final days of the English window, but concerns over his fitness prevented the deal from going through and left him stranded at Tottenham.

However, the situation may change quickly, as Fenerbahce are monitoring him closely and could strike a deal if the right offer is put forward, with the Turkish transfer window not shutting until this Friday.

MORE SPURS STORIES

It was originally reported that Jose Mourinho had shut down a Fenerbahce move for Yves Bissouma after giving a negative review. However, the Special One has since parted ways with the Turkish club, which could perhaps reopen a late path.

Bissouma slipping down Thomas Frank’s pecking order at Tottenham

Bissouma is yet to feature competitively under new Tottenham manager Thomas Frank, with his last competitive appearance coming in the UEFA Europa League final.

The midfielder was involved during pre-season but picked up an injury in training before Spurs’ Premier League opener against Burnley, which has since seen him fall behind in the squad hierarchy.

Description

Spurs fans will love what Xavi Simons has told the Dutch media about the reasons behind his decision to sign for Tottenham Hotspur.

After being snubbed by both Morgan Gibbs-White and Eberechi Eze earlier in the summer window, Tottenham needed to get a top-class number ten through the door to make up for that embarrassment.

In the end, the club managed to pull off a very impressive deal, with Spurs securing Xavi Simons for just £51m.

The transfer fee might have been low for a player who is considered one of the best young attacking midfielders in Europe, but the overall cost of the deal was pretty high for the Lilywhites.

According to reports, Simons has agreed a seven-year contract worth £200,000 per week with Tottenham, bringing the total cost of the deal to a whopping £125m.

Xavi Simons admits he got the right feeling from Tottenham

Previously, Simons revealed that his conversation with Thomas Frank was a big factor in his move to Spurs.

The Netherlands international has now elaborated on his decision, explaining that he got a very good feeling about the club and added that his conversation with Micky van de Ven convinced him that it would be the right next step.

MORE SPURS STORIES

Simons told NOS: “At PSV, for example, after a conversation with manager Ruud van Nistelrooy, I knew: this is where I need to be. I also had that feeling at Leipzig and also at Spurs, where I also met Micky [van de Ven].

“I knew: I want to be there too. That’s where the best players are. I want to be the best too. I know what I want to achieve and I’m going to do it.”

Simons admits his family played a role in Spurs move

The 22-year-old confessed that his family members visited the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and were blown away by the atmosphere at the venue.

He added: “Before I signed, my family went to the stadium. My eleven-year-old sister’s reaction was amazing.”

Tottenham fans might have to wait a little longer before seeing Xavi Simons make his debut for the Lilywhites, but they could still catch a glimpse of the new signing in action for the Netherlands when they face Poland tonight.

The first international break of the 2025/26 season is in full swing, and Tottenham Hotspur head into it off the back of a frustrating 1-0 defeat against Bournemouth in the Premier League.

For Spurs supporters, the wait for Premier League football will stretch another week, with the focus now turning towards international fixtures across Europe.

Several Tottenham players have been called up for duty with their national teams, giving fans the chance to keep a close eye on their performances and perhaps catch a first look at some of the new arrivals.

How Tottenham fans can watch Xavi Simons in action for the Netherlands vs Poland

Several new players joined Tottenham during the summer transfer window, yet some of them are still waiting to make their first-team bow for the Lilywhites.

However, Spurs fans may not have to wait much longer to watch new Dutch signing Xavi Simons in action, as he is expected to feature when the Netherlands face Poland tonight at 19:45, with the game being shown live on Amazon Prime.

Xavi Simons, who was signed just before the Bournemouth clash, has not yet had the chance to pull on a Spurs shirt in competitive action, leaving supporters eager to see what he can bring to Thomas Frank’s side.

Why Simons must stay fit during the international break

Although Simons has not yet made his debut for Tottenham, he has already played competitive football this season with RB Leipzig before making the switch to north London.

In just two appearances for the Bundesliga side, the 22-year-old registered a goal and an assist, underlining his sharpness and ability to make an impact in the final third.

Djed Spence could be about to make England history with ‘first-ever’ moment on the cards - Spurs Web
Description

Djed Spence is in line to make history for England this week, and the Tottenham man hopes he can be a role model for others to follow.

Spurs fans will feel that Spence’s England call-up was a long time coming, with the 25-year-old arguably having been one of the best full-backs in the Premier League since breaking into Ange Postecoglou’s side last season.

With James Maddison and Dominic Solanke currently out injured, the defender is the only Tottenham representative in the England squad.

Thomas Tuchel has said that Spence is fully deserving of his call-up and admitted that he sees him as an option for both right-back and left-back.

Djed Spence is honoured to become England’s first openly Muslim player

The 25-year-old is on the cusp of making history and will become the first Muslim player to play for the Three Lions if he plays against either Andorra or Serbia.

The Tottenham Hotspur man said that he is honoured to have that distinction, admitting that his faith is an important part of his life.

When asked about becoming the first muslim player to wear the England shirt, Spence told Sky Sports: “I’ve seen that. It’s a blessing, it’s amazing. I did see something like that. I was surprised, really, first ever. It’s just amazing. I don’t have the words really.”

MORE SPURS STORIES

Asked if he felt pressure being the first of his faith to play for the senior side, the full-back responded: “Maybe, maybe not. I don’t really feel the pressure for certain things. I just play football with a smile on my face, be happy, and the rest will take care of itself.

“First things first, God is the greatest. I pray a lot. I give gratitude to God. In the toughest moments of my life, the darkest moments, I’ve always believed that God has always been by my side.

“When I’m winning, when I’m in a good moment, I promote God as well because he’s always been by my side. It’s a big thing for me, my faith. If I can do it, you can do it. Not just Muslim kids, any child of any faith. Put your mind to something and you can do it, man.”

Spence admits his strong mentality has helped him overcome challenges

Spence’s path to the Tottenham starting eleven and to the England set-up has been far from straightforward, with the full-back having his fair share of doubters.

However, rather than giving up on his dream, the former Middlesbrough man has fought to overcome every hurdle that was put in front of him, and he puts that down to his mentality.

Spence added: “Without [a strong] mentality, you won’t make it to the top. I definitely think I have got a strong mentality, especially to fight through challenges.”

Tottenham star nominated for Premier League Goal of the Month award - Spurs Web
Description

Tottenham scored five Premier League goals in August, one of which has been nominated for the Goal of the Month award, and it is not hard to guess which one.

Tottenham had an excellent start to the Thomas Frank era, winning their first two Premier League matches against Burnley and Manchester City, and doing so with back-to-back cleansheets, something that they never achieved under Ange Postecoglou.

However, some of the optimism of Spurs fans was dented during their 1-0 loss against Bournemouth, with the performance exposing some of the Lilywhites’ shortcomings.

The Tottenham faithful will be hoping that was a blip rather than a sign of things to come, and that the arrivals of Xavi Simons and Randal Kolo Muani will help solve some of the club’s issues.

Richarlison nominated for Premier League Goal of the Month award

Richarlison won the Player of the Week award for gameweek one after his outstanding brace in the 3-0 win over Burnley.

Both of the Brazilian’s finishes were outstanding, and the second one in particular was something that will likely be replayed for a long time.

The 28-year-old met Mohammed Kudus’ cross with a scissor kick that thundered into the back of the net, and unsurprisingly, it has been nominated for the Goal of the Month award.

MORE SPURS STORIES

Richarlison now has more competition to contend with

We have heard from inside the Tottenham camp that Richarlison is hungry to prove a point this season after his injury struggles prevented him from showcasing his best in a Spurs shirt over the last three years.

Some pundits have backed Richarlison to thrive under Thomas Frank, opining that the Dane’s system suits the former Everton man down to a tee.

However, the Brazil international now does not just have to contend with competition from Dominic Solanke, but also Kolo Muani after the Lilywhites secured the Frenchman in a deadline-day deal.

Ally McCoist names surprise best signing from a ‘good’ Tottenham transfer window

Ally McCoist names surprise best signing from a ‘good’ Tottenham transfer window - Spurs Web
Description

Ally McCoist has named who he thinks Tottenham Hotspur’s best signing of the summer window is, and it is not Xavi Simons.

Tottenham Hotspur’s transfer dealings during the summer window were not flawless, but there is a fair argument to be made that the club did what was required.

The Lilywhites backed new head coach Thomas Frank with six new signings, targeting key areas of the squad that were in desperate need of strengthening.

Among those arrivals, two stand out as marquee additions, with Mohammed Kudus and Xavi Simons joining for over £100 million, while Joao Palhinha and Randal Kolo Muani, despite only arriving on loan, are players of proven quality who can slot straight into the side and immediately raise the standard.

Ally McCoist makes bold claim about Tottenham and Thomas Frank

Despite making six signings this summer, Ally McCoist, speaking on talkSport, argued that Tottenham’s biggest signing of the window was actually Thomas Frank himself.

The former Scottish international claims that Tottenham will have a strong season under Frank this term and also believes that some of the additions Spurs made to their squad this summer are really good, praising the signings of Kevin Danso and Mathys Tel.

“I see Spurs having a good season,” said Jeff Stelling, to which McCoist replied: “I don’t disagree, the result at the weekend was obviously a disappointment.

MORE SPURS STORIES

“But listen, the fact of the matter is, we’ve seen enough for Bournemouth already this season, particularly in that opening game against Liverpool, that they’re more than capable of beating anyone on their day.

“But if you throw in Mathys Tel and Danso, who will certainly take part, I think they’ve had a good window. I’m not sure it’s the best window, but I definitely think they had a good window.

“I tell you what, their best signing might be their manager; he might just be the best signing they’ve made in a number of years. I think he’s a terrific coach, terrific manager, and he’ll do really, really well.”

Thomas Frank already proving his worth at Spurs

Frank stepped into the Tottenham dugout this summer after Daniel Levy sacked Ange Postecoglou following a disastrous Premier League campaign that saw Spurs finish 17th.

In just three league outings, Frank has already shown signs of improvement, winning two of those games and keeping two clean sheets in the process, something that had been a real weakness last term.

Tottenham could revive big-money transfer in January after deadline day talks

Tottenham could revive big-money transfer in January after deadline day talks - Spurs Web
Description

Tottenham could revisit a move for one of their biggest summer targets in January, after talks went right down to the wire on deadline day, and the player himself was keen on making the switch.

While Tottenham Hotspur did manage to address areas of their squad that required more depth in the summer window, several positions were left untouched, leaving supporters to wonder whether the club had done enough to keep pace with their rivals.

Tottenham secured six signings in total, bringing in an attacking midfielder, a wide forward, a striker, a holding midfielder and a young centre-back, all of which adds variety to Thomas Frank’s squad.

Kevin Danso and Mathys Tel also saw their loan moves made permanent, strengthening the spine of the team, but Tottenham still missed out on one of their most ambitious targets, Savinho, despite chasing the Brazilian for much of the summer.

Tottenham could return for Manchester City winger Savinho

TBR Football are now reporting that despite Tottenham’s failure to land Manchester City winger Savinho in the summer, the north London club could make a move for the Brazil international in January.

Manchester City, who have often allowed players to leave when they push for a move, decided to block Savinho’s transfer even though the winger was open to joining Tottenham.

Spurs were even prepared to break their transfer record to secure Savinho, but Pep Guardiola’s side refused to entertain offers, with City making it clear that the winger was not for sale.

MORE SPURS STORIES

Football journalist Graeme Bailey explained just how far Tottenham were willing to go for him, telling TBR Football: “The fact that Tottenham were willing, in theory, to break their transfer record for Savinho tells us everything.

“There were still some talks on Monday morning, Spurs still had a little hope of trying to persuade City to sell. The player wanted the move, he was impressed with Spurs, and they were impressed with him – they liked his attitude, and him wanting the move is always a green flag to a club.”

“The situation could now hinge on Savinho’s game time over the coming months, with Guardiola expected to decide whether he can be part of City’s rotation once he returns from a minor knock that has kept him out at the start of the season.”

Bailey added: “I think there is a real chance Spurs revisit this one, but much will depend on the coming months and how much he features for City.”

Spurs still have wide attacking depth despite Savinho setback

Even without Savinho, Thomas Frank still has plenty of wide attacking options to call upon, with Mohammed Kudus, Brennan Johnson, Wilson Odobert and Mathys Tel all capable of playing out wide and giving Spurs different looks in the final third.

Xavi Simons and Kolo Muani also bring further flexibility as they can both operate in wide roles if required, something that gives Frank the chance to adapt tactically depending on the opposition.

What Mauricio Pochettino said about Xavi Simons four years before Tottenham transfer

What Mauricio Pochettino said about Xavi Simons four years before Tottenham transfer - Spurs Web
Description

Mauricio Pochettino managed Xavi Simons for a short period at PSG and he has already delivered his verdict on Tottenham Hotspur’s new signing.

Tottenham Hotspur played the long game when it came to signing an attacking midfielder. A deal had supposedly been agreed to bring Morgan Gibbs-White to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. However, Spurs missed out on Gibbs-White as he signed a new contract at Nottingham Forest.

Next came Eberchi Eze, another player who was reportedly on the verge of moving to Tottenham. As the negotiations neared an end, there came the report that Spurs lost out on Eze to Arsenal.

Tottenham then turned their attention to Xavi Simons, despite suggestions a couple of weeks before which stated Spurs were set to miss out on Simons. Thanks to Chelsea changing their priorities, Simons completed a successful move to North London and he will make his first appearance after the international break.

Mauricio Pochettino claimed Xavi Simons had ‘very good potential’

Former Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino gave Simons 11 appearances when he was in charge of PSG, despite the Dutchman being just 17 years old at the time.

Pochettino was complimentary about Simons, although he did reveal what he believes to be the midfielder’s ceiling by stating which players he would never be as good as.

Pochettino told Sport: “He won’t be Iniesta or Xavi, but he has the quality and balance to be able to develop a career in the first division. He’s still very young, but he has very good potential.

MORE SPURS STORIES

“Simons is training very well, he has character, he doesn’t get nervous, and he reads the game well.”

Xavi Simons is guaranteed game time at Tottenham

Simons may only have been given a handful of matches under Pochettino, but he is far more proven and experienced now. Spurs had a major attacking midfield shortage on their hands before signing him, so he is guaranteed plenty of starts.

Even after the conclusion of the summer transfer window, Spurs have been unable to resolve their left wing problems. This could mean that Simons is called on to play out wide too.

Regardless of the position he plays, Simons will be tested this season as he will be selected week-in, week-out.
