Description

Thomas Frank has praised the travelling Tottenham contingent to St James Park for one particular thing they did during the side’s 2-2 draw against Newcastle.

The Spurs head coach has made some controversial statements about the supporters in the days leading up to Tuesday’s clash.

It all started with Frank saying it was unacceptable for Tottenham fans to mock Guglielmo Vicario during the club’s 2-1 loss to Fulham on Saturday.

Frank doubled down on his comments about Spurs fans ahead of his side’s trip to Newcastle, and the Tottenham faithful were left angered by the Dane’s statements.

Thomas Frank loved seeing Tottenham fans get behind Guglielmo Vicario

The Spurs fans who made the long trip to St James’ Park on Tuesday could be heard chanting Vicario’s name right from the start.

That was music to Frank’s ears, with the Tottenham boss admitting that the travelling contingent’s efforts throughout the game pushed the team on and were crucial in them managing to salvage a point.

Frank said after the 2-2 draw (via Football.London): “I want to speak about us, and the mentality coming back. And a great point away from home, I’m happy with that.

MORE SPURS STORIES

“I think our fans, exceptional, travelling, 3000 up here, the way they supported us throughout the game, singing, we also heard them singing and praising Vic throughout the game. That’s togetherness.”

When asked what it meant to him to hear the fans signing Vicario’s name, the 52-year-old responded: “You could hear them here, and it’s a difficult place to come as away fans and be loud enough so we can hear them. So they put so much effort into it, matched the effort from the team and that togetherness drove us forward, and it gave us a more than well-deserved point.”

Frank will be hoping relationship with the fans is on the mend

According to reports, over recent days, the Tottenham players held a long internal meeting about their worsening relationship with the supporters.

They will hope that their battling display at Newcastle and the reaction of the fans will be the start of that relationship being mended.

Description

Cristian Romero has now sent a message of focus and togetherness to Tottenham fans after his heroics against Newcastle United.

Cristian Romero proved to be the difference maker for Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday night against Newcastle United at St James Park.

The Argentine grabbed a brace, helping Spurs earn a point after Thomas Frank’s side went behind twice against the Magpies.

They were two well-taken goals that showed just how much of a threat Romero can be in the opposition box, with the centre-back scoring first with a diving header and then producing a bicycle kick finish in the closing stages of the game.

Cristian Romero sends message to Tottenham fans after brace vs Newcastle

The Spurs captain had missed matchweek 13 because of a one-game suspension after picking up five yellow cards in the league.

Tottenham fell to a defeat in his absence, but his return proved to be the difference as Spurs ended their run of three defeats in all competitions, and Romero has now sent a message of focus to Spurs fans on Instagram after that performance.

In his message, the captain emphasised the importance of remaining together and pushing forward even when results are not going their way, crediting the fans for their backing.

MORE SPURS STORIES

He wrote, “It is all about working hard, getting better, and pushing forward. Especially now, when things are not going our way, we have got to stick together. Thanks for all the support as always fans – see you at home on Saturday.”

Spurs’ home form raises concern ahead of next fixture

Indeed, there is so much work needed at Tottenham, especially on their own turf, the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Spurs have been atrocious at their ground, and with a game there next, they are more likely to lose than earn a point, given the severity of their current form.

Thomas Frank thinks it’s about time one ‘exceptional’ Tottenham star got some praise - Spurs Web
Description

Thomas Frank has unsurprisingly singled out Cristian Romero for praise after the centre-back scored his first-ever brace for Tottenham Hotspur against Newcastle United.

While Spurs were on the back foot for large parts of the game at St James’ Park, they certainly had spells where they dominated the ball and showed the threat they can pose.

After going 1-0 down to a Bruno Guimaraes strike in the 71st minute, Tottenham hit back immediately with an equaliser, with Romero producing a bullet header into the far corner from a Mohammed Kudus cross.

It looked like Spurs were undone by a bit of extreme misfortune when Antony Gordon converted from the spot on 86 minutes after a controversial penalty was given against the Lilywhites.

However, instead of feeling sorry for themselves, Tottenham rallied and hit back once again, with Romero’s overhead kick finding its way into the back of the net past several bodies in a crowded box in stoppage time.

Thomas Frank says Cristian Romero deserved his Tottenham brace

Frank suggested that Romero deserved those goals due to the calmness and resoluteness he showed in defence and on the ball.

The Tottenham boss opined that the Argentine’s first goal was even better than his second, suggesting that a lot of strikers would be proud of that header.

MORE SPURS STORIES

When asked about Romero’s brace, Frank joked (via Football.London): “The perfect bicycle kick, hit the shin, aiming for the bottom corner. I think let’s start praising Cuti, I think he deserved that for all of the top performance, defending, on the ball, coolness, calmness, duels.

“And then getting up there and scoring two goals. I think the bicycle kick will most likely get a little bit more praise, but I think the header is more exceptional. The way he does that is better than many strikers.

“That said, I think I really liked the character, the mentality in the team, what they showed after three tough games, I think it’s been. To go here, the fourth game in 10 days, the third away game, a very difficult place, going down two times, being behind two times, and coming back, it shows everything about the willingness and the mentality in the team.”

Frank says mentality is more important than tactics

The Tottenham boss has come under plenty of criticism for his negative tactics over recent weeks.

However, the 52-year-old admitted that while he and his staff can do all the tactical preparations they want, ultimately, it is up to the players to stand up in key moments as Romero did.

When asked if Romero’s leadership was key at a tumultuous time for the club, the Dane responded: “Yeah, of course. I think we can set everything nice tactically up and good principles and all that, and try to do it, and that’s the foundation, and hopefully we can make a great team. But you know, sometimes it’s decisive actions from key players, and Cuti definitely did that today.”

Description

Tottenham Hotspur saw their captain rise above the chaos at St James’ Park, and the underlying numbers paint a clear picture of just how decisive he was in securing a Premier League point.

Tottenham Hotspur did enough to stop their run of three defeats in all competitions with a 2-2 draw on Tuesday night at St James’ Park.

Thomas Frank’s side remains in the bottom half of the Premier League table despite earning a point, but the Tottenham boss will go away with some positives from his team’s performance as they showed fight against Eddie Howe’s side.

Cristian Romero was the star of the night, with the Argentine returning to the starting XI following his suspension after being banned for picking up five yellow cards in the first 12 gameweeks, and his return proved to be the difference for Tottenham.

The Tottenham captain grabbed two spectacular goals, first with a diving header and then a late overhead finish in the dying minutes to give his team a much-needed result.

Cristian Romero’s underlying stats stand out for Tottenham

It was a captain’s performance with Romero leading from the front, doing most of his damage in the opposition box, and he was our man of the match against the Magpies.

FotMob also recognised Romero’s top display, handing him a 9.1 player rating, the most of any player on the pitch.

MORE SPURS STORIES

The defender put in a complete performance, with the underlying numbers backing up his display, as he contributed defensively and offensively while showing leadership in all phases of the game.

He did not give Woltemade a sniff, and he continued to look to push his team up the pitch with a pass accuracy of 85%, while also creating one chance.

Aside from his two goals, Romero was also crucial at the back for Spurs, with the centre-back making one last-man tackle to prevent Newcastle from adding to their tally.

Cristian Romero match stats vs Newcastle

Spurs still have issues despite Romero rescue

While Spurs earned a point thanks to Romero’s heroics, there is still loads of work that needs to be done by Thomas Frank and his team.

Tottenham still do not dominate games, nor do they play attacking football, and that was on show against Newcastle, as the Magpies controlled large periods and could easily have walked away with all three points.

Of course, Tottenham cannot rely on such clinical displays where their only shots on target are goals, as it is not sustainable.

Description

Tottenham fans have highlighted two Newcastle United players who impressed in the 2-2 draw at St James’ Park, and some even want to sign one of them.

Tottenham Hotspur might have picked up a point against Newcastle United, but their overall display shows that Thomas Frank’s side are still miles off some of the best in the league.

The Magpies were clearly the better side on Tuesday night, with Eddie Howe’s men limiting Tottenham to just two shots on target.

Spurs’ first meaningful attempt only arrived in the 78th minute, which tells its own story in a game where they struggled to impose themselves in key moments.

A 2-2 scoreline is not a reflection of the game, as Newcastle created clear-cut chances on several occasions and could easily have won with more composure in front of goal.

Tottenham fans highlight Bruno Guimaraes and Harvey Barnes after standout display

Tottenham Hotspur supporters are very much aware of this and have now singled out two Newcastle players they believe were heads and shoulders above Spurs players.

The Lilywhite faithful have even gone as far as urging their club to sign both stars, given the level they showed on the night.

MORE SPURS STORIES

Bruno Guimaraes was top and so was Harvey Barnes, with the first scoring a belter while Barnes kept Pedro Porro honest all game.

Speaking on the pair, one fan said: “We do not have a LW like Barnes or Gordon and certainly do not have midfielders like Bruno and Tonali. Also their fullbacks looked far more competent on the ball compared to ours.”

Another named Guimaraes as the best player by far urging Tottenham to buy him, they said: “Was Bruno Guimaraes by far, should buy him this summer.”

Still speaking on the players that caused Tottenham the most problems, another commented: “I thought Harvey Barnes had Porro on toast for most of the first half. Porro was chasing shadows with his positioning.”

Other fans chose not to focus on Newcastle players and instead highlighted Tottenham’s flaws, saying: “I feel we will be so much better off without Bentancur. Every time he gets the ball we lose momentum in attack as he either passes sideways or backwards. The rare times he does play a progressive pass he gives it away. We always look so much better worse when he is subbed off on.”

Another added: “Our real problem for years has been movement. The players do not run into space. We had Dele, Son, Kane and Eriksen. Then just Son and now nobody. If nobody makes the runs, how can we pass the ball forward. Bruno will struggle here too.”

While another fan stated: “Our whole issue is the fact nobody other than Bergvall seems comfortable actually passing forwards. They panic and play the easy back pass, which because it is mental on some of the positions they do it the person is not expecting it and we screw up and turn the ball over.”

Spurs issues are clear and focus must shift to recruitment

There are a lot of problems popping up in this Tottenham side, and they need to be addressed quickly if Tottenham are to compete with the best.

Spurs need a wide forward down the left capable of taking on their man and creating chances while also being a threat in front of goal.

A deep-lying playmaker in midfield capable of dictating tempo and carrying Tottenham up the pitch will also help bring some dynamism to a midfield that currently has very similar profiles.

Description

Cristian Romero has earned a lot of favour with Tottenham Hotspur supporters for his performance against Newcastle and this is especially true due to what he did after scoring his goals.

Cristian Romero reached an all-time high at Tottenham Hotspur when after a trying season full of injuries, he captained his team to victory in the Europa League final.

However, the past few months have largely been disappointing for the Argentina international, who has looked less reliable at the heart of the Spurs defence.

This was not the case on Tuesday night as Romero scored a header and an overhead kick to give Tottenham a first Premier League point since the Manchester United game.

Cristian Romero trolled Bruno Guimarães after Tottenham’s equaliser

Romero has a reputation for his fiery personality and this can sometimes land him in trouble. In fact, the central defender was booked against Newcastle immediately after returning from a one-match suspension for picking up five yellow cards.

Despite this, he managed to channel his emotions later in the game and produce a moment which delighted the visiting supporters.

MORE SPURS STORIES

When Romero equalised for Spurs, he faced the Newcastle fans and performed Bruno Guimaraes’ goal celebration. The Brazilian had already used the celebration himself earlier in the match, but perhaps in a premature manner.

This is not the first celebration incident involving Spurs

Tottenham supporters may remember a match almost two years ago when Brentford’s Neal Maupay copied the iconic darts celebration of James Maddison.

The aftermath of this occurrence saw the pair exchange words, with Maddison poking fun at Maupay’s poor goalscoring record before the striker offered his own taunt.

It was Maddison who walked away smiling that day as Spurs claimed a 3-2 victory and Romero will be feeling pleased with himself too after rescuing his team from the jaws of defeat.

Description

Heung-min Son has now spoken ahead of his return to Tottenham Hotspur as the club also announces mural to join two other club legends.

Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed that Heung-min Son is set to return to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to bid farewell to Spurs fans.

The former captain will address the lilywhite faithful for the first time since the summer when he takes to the pitch before kickoff during Spurs’ next Champions League game on 9 December against Slavia Praha.

Spurs will be hoping to cap off what will be an emotional day for everyone associated with the club in style as they look to push back up the Champions League league phase table where they are two points off the automatic qualification places.

Heung-min Son to be honoured with new mural in N17

Heung-min Son is not only returning to north London, but the club has also confirmed that a mural will be made of him on the streets of N17.

Working with the Fan Advisory Board, it has been revealed that work has now commenced on a street mural on Tottenham High Road, to be completed by December 9, to further celebrate Son’s legacy in north London.

The design of the mural was chosen by the Korean international himself and is being created by the team behind the artworks of fellow Tottenham legends Ledley King and Harry Kane that also adorn the road leading to the stadium.

Son also opened up about the upcoming reunion, revealing that it was important to him that he had the chance to address the fans in person, after his departure was announced overseas and not in front of the supporters who watched him for a decade.

He said this in his message released ahead of the reunion: “When I announced my difficult decision to leave Spurs in the summer, it was in Korea and I never got a proper chance to say goodbye to fans at the stadium.

“Now I am so happy because I am going to come back to London on 9th December, for the Champions League match, and be able to tell the Spurs fans in person just how much their support and love over 10 years has meant to me and my family.

“It will be emotional, but it is important for me and the Club that this happens.”

Three winners and three losers from Tottenham’s 2-2 Premier League draw with Newcastle

Three winners and three losers from Tottenham’s 2-2 Premier League draw with Newcastle - Spurs Web
Description

Some Tottenham Hotspur players shone while others faltered as Thomas Frank’s team secured a first point in almost a month against Newcastle.

It looked as though Tottenham Hotspur were heading for another defeat, with Newcastle United twice taking the lead during Tuesday night’s fixture.

However, Cristian Romero returned from his suspension in style as he scored the initial equaliser and did so again in stoppage time.

The Argentine can be proud of his attacking contributions, and there were other players who had an impact, although not always for the right reason. Here are the three winners and losers from Tottenham’s 2-2 draw at Newcastle United.

Cristian Romero is competing with Micky van de Ven

Romero and Micky van de Ven work as a team when it comes to defending. However, in bizarre fashion, the pair look to be challenging each other to be the club’s top scorer at the end of the season.

It was the Spurs captain’s night against Newcastle as he levelled the score with a fine header. This was a significant moment for Romero, who has struggled to find the target with some of his aerial shots this season, unlike van de Ven, who cannot stop scoring.

Tottenham fell behind again, only for Romero to respond once more, and this time he was even more impressive. The World Cup-winning defender attempted an overhead kick, and while his contact with the ball was not the cleanest, it did the job. He can sleep well tonight knowing he did everything in his power to drive Spurs towards victory.

MORE SPURS STORIES

Mohammed Kudus got another Tottenham goal contribution

Mohammed Kudus was one of a very small number of players who delivered when Spurs were defeated by Fulham last Saturday. He scored a very good goal, and so it was no surprise when he was named in the starting lineup against Newcastle.

The right winger did not have his strongest performance by any means, as he struggled to cause the home side any problems for much of the game.

This changed towards the end of the game as Kudus played a really nice cross to Romero to get Tottenham their opening goal. It is encouraging to see him being involved in goals more frequently.

Guglielmo Vicario is no longer the talking point at Tottenham

There have been some low moments for Guglielmo Vicario during his time in North London, and Saturday provided one of the worst yet. The Spurs shot-stopper made a schoolboy error and was berated by his own team’s supporters.

Although the Italian conceded the same number of goals against Newcastle as he did in that game, there are positives to be taken.

Vicario was not responsible for either of the two goals, with one being the result of poor defending and the other a penalty kick. He will be glad that the dialogue around Tottenham has drifted elsewhere as he looks to get back in form.

Now, let’s take a look at the three losers from Newcastle 2-2 Tottenham…

Pedro Porro was off the pace against Newcastle

Vicario was the most unpopular player at Spurs on Saturday night, but Pedro Porro was a close second after he appeared to react in anger at the supporters following the game.

Frustration towards Vicario might have calmed down, but there will be no love lost between Porro and the Tottenham fans after a poor display from the defender.

His lack of pace proved costly as he was beaten in a footrace, which led to Newcastle’s opening goal. Porro was just as poor at the other end of the pitch, successfully completing just one of his seven crosses. It was an unconvincing performance from the Spaniard.

Rodrigo Bentancur almost cost Tottenham a point

Say what you want about the VAR decision to send Thomas Bramall to the pitchside monitor, but what was Rodrigo Bentancur thinking?

The midfielder had no intention of attempting to win the ball, and it seemed he had already given up on winning an aerial duel against Dan Burn. As a result, he put his arms around the England defender and gave VAR the opportunity to make a decision against him.

Plenty has been said about Joao Palhinha being a duel winner and not a possession-based player. However, it is hard to see how Bentancur is any better at bringing control to Tottenham. He has been shocking this season and is continuing to be handed starts because of who he is, rather than what he actually offers to the team.

Destiny Udogie still has a point to prove

The final player to complete the losers section is Destiny Udogie. The left-back did not have as many responsibilities as Porro on the opposite side of defence, but he still struggled with the task at hand.

Udogie won two of his nine overall duels, and his defensive contributions were lacking in every department except for recoveries.

The Italian did nothing at the other end of the pitch and has not done a good job at convincing Thomas Frank that he should start ahead of Djed Spence.

Description

Cristian Romero was the star player for Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday night as a 2-2 draw was secured against Newcastle, but previous results have been far less acceptable.

Tottenham Hotspur made the long trip to Newcastle for the second time this season with hopes of improving on a 2-0 defeat suffered there in the Carabao Cup.

Cristian Romero was back in the team after serving his one-match suspension, and he got off to a sloppy start. However, the Spurs captain came through for his team, scoring a header to draw them level with 12 minutes remaining.

Despite Tottenham falling behind for a second time, Romero found the net again, with an impressive overhead kick which slowly made its way past Aaron Ramsdale.

Cristian Romero claims Tottenham have not previously been good enough

Romero was in good spirits after his two goals saw Spurs receive a much-needed point in the Premier League. The centre-back even revealed that his second goal was inspired by his international teammate Lionel Messi.

However, Romero did admit that Tottenham have not been good enough in recent matches, while commenting on the team’s improved mentality on Tuesday night.

He told Sky Sports: “The first goal was very important. In the last three or four games, the team weren’t good enough. It has been a difficult time, but especially in this game, I love the mentality.”

MORE SPURS STORIES

Speaking about his second goal, Romero added: “Every day with Lionel Messi in the national team, I watch him, and it is a beautiful goal.”

Spurs must build on their performance against Newcastle

Tottenham did show heart by coming back twice to get a draw against Newcastle, and of all the grounds in England, St James’ Park is usually one of the toughest places to get a result.

Yet the point still remains that Spurs are 11th in the Premier League table and are without a victory in the English top flight since October.

Character has been shown against Newcastle, but Tottenham must now show they are capable of securing a victory. It would be a big step in the right direction if they can take the lead against Thomas Frank’s former club on Saturday and hold onto it for the remainder of the game, rather than leaving things until the last minute.

Five things we learned from Tottenham’s 2-2 draw away to Newcastle United - Spurs Web
Description

Tottenham Hotspur shared the spoils in a frantic 2-2 draw at St James’ Park to bring their run of three defeats in all competitions to a halt.

Let’s take a look at the five things we learned from Newcastle 2-2 Tottenham:

Cristian Romero delivers a captain’s performance for Tottenham vs Newcastle

The pressure was definitely on Tottenham Hotspur coming into their encounter with Newcastle United today, as Thomas Frank’s side needed to avoid defeat at St James’ Park to reduce some of the heat the manager was getting from his own fans.

Frank made some changes, and amongst them was the return of Cristian Romero to the Tottenham side after serving his one-game suspension for picking up a booking.

Surprisingly, it was the Tottenham captain who proved to be the game-changer for Spurs, as he was immense in the opposition box.

The Argentine pulled Tottenham back into the game twice in spectacular fashion, first with a flying header and then with an overhead kick late in the game when the three points looked destined for Newcastle.

Romero definitely spared Frank’s blushes as he put in a proper captain display, leading from the front.

MORE SPURS STORIES

Spurs escape with a point despite Newcastle dominance

Of course, when a defender is the one dragging you from the brink of defeat, then that often tells the story of how the game went.

In all fairness, Tottenham will count themselves lucky to have come away with a point, as Newcastle were the better side statistically.

Eddie Howe’s side started the game with intent and looked like the team interested in winning tonight, playing total football and dominating Spurs, managing 19 shots, seven on target, while registering an xG of 1.96.

The Magpies also created good chances and were denied by the woodwork at times, while Spurs did not manage to hit the target until the 78th minute through Romero’s opener, and the fact that their only two shots on target were the goals sums up how fortunate the point ultimately was.

VAR penalty decision adds to Premier League inconsistency

The officiating in the Premier League this season has been chaotic to say the least. The referees lack consistency of any sort, and we have already seen the confusion around offside when players are in the eyeline of goalkeepers.

Today brought another example, as Newcastle were handed a soft penalty for holding in the box, which is a complete lottery given how often these incidents are overlooked in the league.

It was a poor decision that put the Magpies in front, leading to more questions over the use of VAR in the Premier League, given the lack of consistency involved when the technology is used.

Xavi Simons benched again as Tottenham selection questions grow

Frank made big decisions tonight, and many fans will have been surprised by the lineup the manager went with.

Indeed, the Dane might have had in mind the need to deal with Newcastle’s physicality, which made the inclusion of Pape Matar Sarr understandable.

Maybe height played a role in Johnson and Bergvall’s involvement. However, Xavi Simons being benched for the fourth game running is strange given how much he cost Tottenham this summer.

Frank already stated that he believes Simons needs to adapt, but it is difficult for a 22-year-old to do so without any game time.

Tottenham have Brentford next, and it will be interesting to see if the Dutchman is handed a start there.

Guglielmo Vicario responds strongly after recent Tottenham error

Last time out, Guglielmo Vicario’s howler made the headlines, and rightfully so, as it cost Tottenham a goal.

Despite that, he was once more handed a start tonight, which is not surprising as he often gets the nod even after poor displays.

The Italian is definitely a big character, and his display tonight showed that he was not flustered by the error and was willing to move on from it quickly.

He was crucial for Tottenham, making several important saves to keep them in the game, while also coming up with some strong high claims when Newcastle looked to threaten from set pieces.

The Tottenham number one on his day is a very good shot stopper, but his problem is inconsistency. You just never know when he will have a down moment, which are often very costly.

But tonight, he deserves his flowers for how well he bounced back.
