Description

Despite their latest defeat at the hands of Nottingham Forest, it is still all to play for in the fight to avoid the drop for Tottenham Hotspur, and the next few months will be crucial in their bid to stay up. We have now compared Spurs’ fixtures with those of their relegation rivals.

The margin for error in the Premier League’s battle for survival is very slim, given how tight it is at the bottom of the table.

Leeds United, in 15th, down to West Ham United in 18th, are currently embroiled in the relegation scrap with seven games to go.

As it stands, four points is the difference between Leeds and West Ham, leaving it all to play for in the battle to beat the drop.

Spurs currently find themselves outside the relegation zone, but only just, with one point separating them in 17th from West Ham in 18th.

Ange Postecoglou delivers honest verdict on Tottenham relegation battle: 'They need a circuit-breaker' - Spurs Web
Description

Ange Postecoglou has now offered a candid view on whether Tottenham can still steer clear of Premier League relegation this season.

Tottenham Hotspur are only just outside the relegation zone following their 3-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Spurs currently maintain a one-point lead over West Ham United in 18th, thanks to the Hammers falling short in their own clash against Aston Villa, where they lost 2-0.

Given Tottenham’s form in the league, there is a growing feeling that they might not have what it takes to beat the drop this campaign.

Spurs remain winless this calendar year in the Premier League and have managed just two wins from their last 21 games.

Tottenham Ange Postecoglou Premier League survival verdict

Despite this poor run of results, former Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou is certain that Spurs will avoid the drop this season.

The Australian was in charge last season, where he guided Tottenham to their first piece of silverware since 2008, despite having them in 17th.

MORE SPURS STORIES

Speaking to Melbourne-based radio station SEN 1116, Postecoglou reflected on his emotional attachment to Spurs and addressed their relegation battle, admitting the situation is difficult but insisting they have enough quality to survive.

“Not great, I still have a really strong attachment to the club. It was two years and they were by no means easy years, but we invested a lot into them. Second last game we won a European trophy which was an incredible high.

“The connection there will be there forever. To watch them struggle has not been easy and it is not the way I thought it would go. They are in a hell of a fight, relegation is massive for any club but for Tottenham, it is a pretty big deal.

“They have some fighting to do and they have the quality to get out. They need a circuit-breaker for sure.”

Ange Postecoglou reflects on Spurs and Forest

Postecoglou was sacked by Tottenham due to his poor league performance, but the 60-year-old did not waste time before returning to management.

He took charge of Spurs’ relegation rivals Nottingham Forest, but his spell there lasted just 39 days before he was dismissed.

The 60-year-old admitted he watched his two former sides face off on Sunday, describing the experience as uncomfortable as Forest ran out 3-0 winners at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

He continued by explaining his emotional investment in both clubs, particularly Spurs, and how difficult it was to watch the match unfold.

“I did watch it – I am still very much invested – particularly in Spurs because of the players and some of the staff there.

“We had two years together, you always have that attachment. If you had have told me in May last year that this would be the scenario of watching two teams I have managed in the last calendar year, I would have said ‘no, that is beyond the realms of possibility’.

“I tuned in and I watched. It was an uncomfortable watch, I did not enjoy it, that is for sure.”

The former Tottenham boss also hinted at the possibility of his returning to management next season, stating that he would prefer to wait until the summer when he would have the chance to oversee a full pre-season, before stepping back into work.

It remains to be seen if that return will be to the Premier League, where he has unfinished business.

Tottenham target Chris Hughton as interim manager: Career stats, trophies, win record - Spurs Web
Description

Chris Hughton has been linked with the Tottenham managerial job in recent weeks. But how good is he as a manager? Let’s find out.

Tottenham Hotspur are understood to be working behind the scenes as they continue their search for a manager to replace the struggling Igor Tudor.

Tudor has managed just one win in his seven matches as Spurs boss, with his latest defeat against Nottingham Forest believed to be the nail in the coffin for the Croat.

A mutual parting of ways between both Tudor and Tottenham is said to have been agreed, and Spurs are now beginning their search for a new manager.

Chris Hughton is among the names linked to Spurs as the club continues to assess its options. With that in mind, we have now decided to take a look at Hughton’s managerial career and how well he performed in those stints.

Tottenham manager target: Chris Hughton’s record and career history

Chris Hughton represents a managerial option familiar with the inner workings at Tottenham, having both played for and coached the Lilywhites.

Making his professional debut aged 20, Hughton spent most of his playing career with Tottenham Hotspur as a left-back, leaving in 1990 after 13 years.

MORE SPURS STORIES

After brief spells with West Ham United and Brentford, he retired from playing in 1993 at the age of 34.

Following his retirement, Hughton served as a coach and later assistant manager at Tottenham from 1993 to 2007. He moved to Newcastle United in 2008, initially as first-team coach before taking over as caretaker manager, leading them back to the Premier League and earning the role permanently before his dismissal in December 2010.

He later managed Birmingham City, Norwich City, Brighton & Hove Albion, Nottingham Forest and the Ghana national team.

Chris Hughton’s managerial performance and record

Hughton has had mixed success across his managerial career, with his most notable achievement coming at Brighton & Hove Albion, where he secured promotion to the Premier League in 2017 and maintained their top-flight status for two seasons.

Across his various roles, his record shows periods of stability alongside spells where results dipped, leading to several managerial departures.

His time at Newcastle United stands out statistically, while other stints, including Norwich City and Nottingham Forest, proved more challenging.

Overall, Chris Hughton has managed 516 games, winning 200, drawing 144, and losing 172, giving him a win percentage of 38.76.

He is well-suited to relegation battles and is also a manager capable of securing promotion to the top flight, which could bode well for Spurs should they go down.

I did it at Sunderland and I can keep Tottenham up too: Gus Poyet wants the Spurs job - Spurs Web
Description

Gus Poyet has now emerged as the latest name to publicly throw his hat into the ring for the Tottenham job, insisting he has what it takes to steer Spurs away from danger.

One month has gone by since Tottenham Hotspur appointed Igor Tudor as interim manager, and results have remained the same.

Spurs are still without a win in the Premier League this calendar year and have managed just two wins in their last 21 league outings.

That run of form has Tottenham right in the thick of a relegation dogfight, with one point separating them from 18th-placed West Ham United.

Gus Poyet throws his name in the mix for Tottenham manager job

Igor Tudor is now under pressure, with results still failing to improve under his tutelage.

MORE SPURS STORIES

The latest defeat to relegation rivals Nottingham Forest has only intensified speculation over his future, with some reports suggesting his time is up.

Spurs, for their part, may need to go back to the drawing board, though the potential vacancy has already left many clamouring for the role.

Tim Sherwood once again put his name in the mix for the Tottenham job, this time claiming he will keep them up, and now Gus Poyet has followed suit by staking his own claim.

Speaking on Tottenham’s current situation, Poyet questioned what he has seen on the pitch and explained his coaching approach, saying:

He told talkSport: “I think they are in danger, I think they are. I did not like what I saw on the pitch. You know, like I said, sometimes… I do not know. You know, when I was a player, I respected the coach’s instructions and then I played. When I was a coach, I tried to give the instructions, but they play.

“I believe the same; I did not change my mind. I do not think now you need to do what I told you; if not, you are not playing, because they need to make the decision on the pitch, because I am not there.

“You know the typical, like when the coach calls you and he says, “Guys,” and you look at him and say, “Yeah, yeah, right,” and play. That was my character, and that is what Simon meant, saying play.”

Addressing whether he would take the job if approached, Poyet pointed to his past experience in a similar situation, adding:

“I already done it in Sunderland. I was in that position – oh, sorry, I was in a worse position. I was seven points adrift… do not ask me how, but we stayed up.

“That is what I was saying about the objectives. There is objective; that was the objective.”

Gus Poyet backs himself to keep Spurs in the Premier League

On whether he can keep Tottenham up, Poyet explained that the reality can differ once inside a club environment, while stressing the need for simplicity in approach:

“From outside, yes. Then from inside is when you find… if you find that problem inside, then definitely. You need to know that it is very easy for everybody to talk outside – ‘Yeah, I know what to do if I go in.’

“Do you remember when Harry Redknapp, after Juande Ramos left, he put ketchup back on the table? Are you going to win or lose because of ketchup? Come on, stop it.

“Now the players, they need something. I think it is as simple as possible – play the players in their best position and play.”

Having had stints in Greece, China and elsewhere, Poyet was also asked about a potential return to England, where he admitted opportunities have been limited:

“I am trying – no chance at the moment, no chance. Not even meetings, which is… because I always say, have a meeting, listen to me, let me convince the chairman.”

On the possibility of Spurs making an approach, he reiterated his willingness while stressing the importance of club backing:

“I cannot say no, and I have to trust my ability. I have got no doubt, but listen to me, I like it when the clubs support the coach. I like it… like what Simon said about, choose your staff – we want to win the league with these players – okay, pick the coach, go with the coach.”

Igor Tudor’s Tottenham exit rumours may be premature: Talks still ongoing at Spurs - Spurs Web
Description

TalkSPORT sources have revealed that many of the reports doing the rounds on Tottenham and Igor Tudor are actually premature.

Since Tottenham’s 3-0 loss to Nottingham Forest, a number of reports have suggested that Spurs are seeking to make a managerial change during the international break.

Tudor and Tottenham are expected to part ways by mutual consent after the Croat has overseen four defeats and a draw in his five league games in charge.

In fact, it has been claimed that Spurs have already begun working on finding the right replacement for Tudor, as the club make a desperate attempt to preserve their Premier League status.

Tottenham have not made a final decision on Igor Tudor’s future

However, a new update has poured cold water on the reports of the former Juventus boss’ impending departure from Spurs.

It has been asserted that Tottenham are still holding talks over their next move, and no decision has been made on Tudor’s future.

Paul Hawksbee said on talkSPORT: “You probably saw on social media some pronouncements that there will be a parting of ways between Spurs and Igor Tudor. Our understanding here at talkSPORT is that that is still being discussed, and no decisions have been made.”

MORE SPURS STORIES

The presenter then went on to add that Adi Hutter, Robbie Keane, Roberto De Zerbi, and Chris Hughton could be potential contenders to take over from Tudor if Spurs do decide to part ways with the 47-year-old.

Would Roberto De Zerbi accept the Spurs job right now?

Some sources suggest that while De Zerbi is open to taking over at Tottenham in the summer if they stay up, he has no intention of taking a job before the end of the season.

However, The Times have claimed that Spurs have discussed offering the Italian coach a contract with a break clause in the event that the club are relegated.

However, the same report explained that Tottenham’s preferred plan was always to make a permanent managerial appointment at the end of the season, as more managers would be available in the summer.

Five reasons Tottenham have an 21-day gap before returning to Premier League action - Spurs Web
Description

Tottenham Hotspur have a huge gap before their next Premier League fixture and this is not merely due to the international break.

Many fans groan when the international break begins, but Tottenham Hotspur supporters will wish it could last forever.

Luckily for them, Spurs are not in action until a week after it finishes anyway, giving the club plenty of time to sort out their shambolic managerial situation.

Here are the five reasons Tottenham are not set to play again for another 18 days (21 days after their last fixture).

The international break is underway

Tottenham’s young stars have already begun fulfilling their international duties and the senior players will start doing the same on Thursday.

Most of the club’s players are involved in low-stake friendly matches. However, Lucas Bergvall and Radu Dragusin are competing in the World Cup qualifying play-offs for Sweden and Romania respectively.

Spurs are out of the FA Cup

This season has been a disaster for Tottenham and that includes their performances in the domestic cup competitions.

MORE SPURS STORIES

Spurs were dumped out of the FA Cup by Aston Villa in the third round, meaning they have no fixture to fulfil on Easter weekend.

Tottenham fell short in the Champions League

Even though Spurs did brilliantly in the opening stage of the Champions League, they were absolutely thrashed by Atletico Madrid in the last 16 first leg.

The valiant response at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium was not enough to put Tottenham through to the next round, extending their period of time without a match.

Spurs are not playing until the Sunday

There is only one reason for Tottenham’s trip to Sunderland not to take place on a Saturday and that is due to TV broadcasting.

Sky Sports will be showing all the action from the Stadium of Light, meaning it will kick off at 2pm a day later.

Tottenham have not arranged a mid-season friendly

It has not been uncommon in recent times for Spurs to arrange a behind-closed-doors game while the international break is in progress.

However, no such fixture has been scheduled, which is another reason the Lilywhites will be out of action for so long.

Tottenham Hotspur will be regretting their big Yang Min-hyeok gamble in January

Tottenham Hotspur will be regretting their big Yang Min-hyeok gamble in January - Spurs Web
Description

Tottenham Hotspur appear to have made a major error when it comes to Yang Min-hyeok, who has had an extremely frustrating couple of months after a strong first half of the campaign.

The 19-year-old winger had a big impact at Portsmouth after joining the club on loan last summer, scoring three goals in 16 appearances for Pompey.

Yang made decisive contributions at crucial times for the South Coast club and appeared to be on his way to becoming a fan favourite at Fratton Park.

However, the Spurs teenager was recalled in January and loaned out to Championship leaders Coventry City, where things have not gone according to plan.

Tottenham’s Yang Min-hyeok has not made a matchday squad for over a month

The switch to Coventry has proven to be disastrous for the winger so far, with Yang having managed just one start for his new side, which came in the FA Cup last month.

According to Football.London, the pacy winger has only made three appearances in the Championship for Coventry, totalling just 29 minutes of football.

MORE SPURS STORIES

In fact, the outlet reveals that the Tottenham man has not made it into the Sky Blues’ matchday squad for over a month.

It is fair to say that the youngster would be wishing he had stayed at Portsmouth, and the decision-makers at Spurs may also be rueing their decision to send the youngster to the league leaders.

What Frank Lampard has said about Yang’s situation

Coventry boss Frank Lampard spoke about the winger’s lack of game time last month, insisting that the 19-year-old will come into the side when he is needed.

The Chelsea legend remarked that he is not prioritising picking the club’s own players over the ones who are on loan, insisting that his team selections are on merit.

Lampard told Coventry Live last month about Yang: “We’re competing to try and do well this season. I have to make decisions with what I see. And that’s not to disrespect Mini. If I feel like it’s Mini’s time to come in, he’ll come in, absolutely. That goes with all the players.

“I don’t have a preference of loan or players that are ours, as such, because at the minute we want to win. I can’t add those kind of emotions into it. I have to try to pick the best 11 and the best bench, and at the moment we don’t have any injuries.”

Tottenham discuss Roberto De Zerbi and Portuguese manager, says Fabrizio Romano - Spurs Web
Description

Fabrizio Romano has provided a big update on Tottenham’s search for a new permanent head coach amid Roberto De Zerbi links.

Over the last 48 hours, it has been widely reported that Spurs could replace Igor Tudor with another interim appointment before the Lilywhites take to the field next against Sunderland on April 12.

The club are also working on a long-term option to take over in the summer, with some sources suggesting that Roberto De Zerbi is Tottenham’s top target.

Other reports have maintained that Mauricio Pochettino remains the name at the top of Spurs’ wishlist, but it appears that another Premier League manager may be on the Lilywhites radar.

Tottenham holding discussions over a move for Marco Silva

Fabrizio Romano has now taken to social media to confirm that Tottenham are continuing to assess the best candidate for the permanent role.

He claims that the situation will ‘evolve’ over the coming days and suggests that De Zerbi remains the club’s preferred candidate.

However, interestingly, Romano adds that Fulham boss Marco Silva is also a name which has been discussed internally at Tottenham.

MORE SPURS STORIES

Silva was among the names that Spurs considered appointing last summer, before they eventually decided to bring Thomas Frank through the door.

Romano has now said on X: “Tottenham keep assessing internally best options for managerial situation to evolve in next days/summer. Roberto De Zerbi, favorite candidate from June and Italian manager open to discuss from summer. Marco Silva also being discussed internally.”

Another Premier League manager is also on Spurs’ radar

Silva is not the only Premier League boss liked by Tottenham, who are also eyeing a move for a highly-rated young manager, whose stock has grown rapidly in England over the last couple of years.

Andoni Iraola continues on Spurs’ wishlist as the Spaniard’s current deal with Bournemouth runs out this summer.

However, the Cherries boss is not expected to make a final decision on his future before the end of the season.

Three candidates Tottenham should consider to become the club’s next captain

Three candidates Tottenham should consider to become the club’s next captain - Spurs Web
Description

Tottenham Hotspur could be about to lose another captain this summer, meaning there is another big decision to be made.

Heung-min Son’s departure last August saw Tottenham Hotspur lose their skipper, just two years after he took on the role.

Despite the fact Cristian Romero was linked with Atletico Madrid, he was handed the captaincy, but this decision could come back to bite the club.

Once again, Romero is expected to leave Spurs, meaning another player must be identified to wear the armband if the Argentine does depart North London.

Here are three candidates Tottenham ought to consider for the role, provided they do not follow Romero out the door of course.

James Maddison is the obvious pick for Tottenham

During Ange Postecoglou’s reign, James Maddison wore the armband at times for Tottenham when Romero was absent, so it makes sense to give him a promotion when he returns from his long-term injury.

Maddison is among his team’s most experienced players and he is unlikely to push for a move straight after his comeback, even if Spurs suffer a humiliating relegation.

MORE SPURS STORIES

The fact the midfielder has been out for so long could actually work out rather nicely, as the Tottenham fans will not have any anger towards him for what has been a dreadful season.

Archie Gray has shown himself to be a leader

Call us crazy, but this 20-year-old has been levels above most of his teammates when it comes to leadership and workrate this season.

Archie Gray still has a lot to learn, but should at least be in the conversation for the captaincy role. If Spurs do drop down to the Championship, why not?

Perhaps a good first move would be to promote Gray to the five-man leadership group to see how he performs with his added responsibilities.

Conor Gallagher has worn a captain’s armband before

Although Conor Gallagher has made a miserable start to life at Tottenham, he is a player who possesses experience as a leader.

The 26-year-old first captained Chelsea in August 2023 and he will have learnt a lot since then, especially as he broadened his horizons with a move to Spain.

If Gallagher is allowed to play a more centralised, possession-based role with fewer attacking expectations next season, he might become decent for Tottenham, so he could be considered.
