Joao Gomes pens new Wolves contract until 2030 amid Tottenham interest

Tottenham Hotspur focused mainly on addressing the defensive and offensive units of the squad during the winter transfer window, signing the likes of Antonin Kinsky, Kevin Danso and Mathys Tel. Now, the club have started planning for the summer transfer window after an extremely disappointing season, seemingly setting their sights on a central midfielder.

This is because the Hotspur Way chiefs are planning to cash in on Yves Bissouma as he enters the last year of his contract. Should Bissouma gets moved on, a competent No.8 has to be signed to complement Rodrigo Bentancur and Dejan Kulusevski in the middle of the park.

Tottenham have reportedly set their sights on signing Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Joao Gomes, who could cost in the region of £50m.

Regardless of Wolves’ struggles this season, Joao Gomes has performed relatively well. He has been one of the very players to produce decent displays amid a torrid campaign that currently sees Vitor Pereira’s side just above the relegation spots. The Brazilian midfielder has racked up three goals and an assist in 27 Premier League games thus far.

However, Spurs have been dealt a fresh blow in their pursuit of Gomes. The South American has penned a new five-year deal at Molineux despite interest from Tottenham and several other clubs, Wolves’ official website have confirmed. He has signed a bumper new contract until the summer of 2030 with an option for a further 12 months.

The Wanderers were adamant they wouldn’t lose several key players this summer, and after extending Matheus Cunha’s contract last month, they have secured his compatriot’s future. Perhaps the Molineux chiefs are now feeling confident that they will be able to avoid the drop, having opened a nine-point gap from the three sides in the danger zone, and that reflects in their quick renewals of two key stars.

Now, Wolves are positioned very well when it comes to deciding Gomes’ future. This means Spurs will have to meet their expectations if they want to sign the South American box-to-box midfielder.

Ange Postecoglou is a dead man walking as Daniel Levy sharpens knives at Tottenham

At 24, the Rio De Janeiro native does suit Levy’s transfer policy from recent years, and he fits the profile of a player who is technically strong to thrive in Ange Postecoglou’s high-pressing, attacking system at White Hart Lane. The Australian tactician would love a tenacious and combative presence operating from the base of Spurs’ midfield, and the Wolves star appears ideal for that role.

However, Wolves extending Gomes’ contract until 2030 may have just halted Tottenham’s pursuit of the player.

Tottenham Hotspur fans are enduring a brutal season, with the club languishing in 14th place in the Premier League. The Lilywhites look completely out of sorts under Ange Postecoglou, far from the side many expected to challenge for a top-four finish. Defensively, they’ve been particularly poor, managing just six clean sheets in 29 league games, a dismal record for a club with Champions League aspirations at the start of the campaign.

Such a disappointing season has inevitably left fans reminiscing about the glory days under Mauricio Pochettino. Back then, Spurs were Premier League contenders and Champions League regulars, boasting one of the most well-drilled defensive units in the league. White Hart Lane was a fortress, and at the heart of that defence stood the iconic duo of Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld—a partnership that embodied composure, grit, and tactical brilliance.

Vertonghen and Alderweireld were arguably regarded as two of the best defenders in the world during their prime years at Tottenham. Their understanding, chemistry, and consistency at the back were second to none, forming the backbone of a Spurs side that often punched above its weight.

It remains a surprise to many that the duo never managed to lift silverware during their time in North London, despite coming agonisingly close on multiple occasions. Most notably, they played a pivotal role in Tottenham’s historic run to the 2019 UEFA Champions League final, a remarkable achievement that ended in heartbreak with a loss to Liverpool in Madrid.

Jan Vertonghen speaks about joining Tottenham

Vertonghen is one of the best centre-backs Tottenham have had in their recent history. The Belgium international was a natural leader and was a fan favourite during his time in North London. The 37-year-old played his best years of football at Spurs and gave his all every time. Vertonghen recently announced that he was retiring at the end of the season, and Spurs fans will surely be a bit emotional when he hangs up his boots.

However, the current RSC Anderlecht defender recently revealed a huge secret about his move to Tottenham back in 2012. Speaking to NU (transcribed by TBR Football), Vertonghen said,

“Arsenal was also concrete, but they wanted to make me a midfield controller, an Emmanuel Petit type. I’m not afraid of competition, but the overall picture of Spurs appealed to me more.”

Spurs fans will always be grateful that Jan Vertonghen chose to wear the Lilywhite of Tottenham instead of making the switch to arch-rivals Arsenal. The former Ajax defender created countless unforgettable moments during his time in North London. From being a cornerstone of Mauricio Pochettino’s side that regularly challenged for the Premier League, to delivering on the biggest stages in Europe, Vertonghen’s legacy is etched into the club’s modern history.

One of his standout performances came during the iconic 2018/19 Champions League campaign, when he not only scored but also assisted against Borussia Dortmund in the Last 16, an electric night that encapsulated his class, commitment, and importance to the team.

His leadership, loyalty, and countless match-winning performances in a Spurs shirt have left a lasting legacy at N17. Vertonghen’s contribution to the club will be remembered for years to come, not just for the trophies that eluded him, but for the passion and pride with which he wore the Lilywhite jersey.

Tottenham Hotspur are ready to accept a bargain fee for Cristian Romero amid Atletico Madrid’s interest

Tottenham Hotspur could be set for some major changes in the summer, and they may lose some high-profile players after a woeful 2024/25 campaign.

Spurs are currently 14th in the Premier League, with Ange Postecoglou under huge pressure to keep his job beyond the end of the season. It has been a miserable season for the loyal supporters, especially, and the expectation will be that changes are made in the summer to ensure that next season is a much more positive one.

Unless the North Londoners go all the way in the Europa League and win it, they are set to miss out on Champions League football and this could lead to some key departures in the off-season.

Tottenham star Cristian Romero has been linked with an exit ahead of the summer transfer window. Real Madrid have held an interest in the South American star for some time now, but it is their cross-town rivals, Atletico Madrid, who are reportedly trying to lure him away from the North Londoners. Diego Simeone’s side have made him their top defensive target as the 26-year-old enters the final two years of his deal at the end of the campaign.

Once deemed untouchable, Spurs are now open to entertaining offers for Cristian Romero. It is understood that should the Argentine not accept a contract extension until the end of the season, the Hotspur Way chiefs will cash him in.

Now in a fresh update, an exclusive report from Football Insider claims that Tottenham could accept a £50m bid for Romero when the transfer window reopens in June. The 2022 World Cup winner was valued highly by the club in recent windows but his inconsistent form coupled with injury worries have seen them now ask a fee in the region of £50m.

Indeed, Romero has had an injury-ravaged season, limiting him to only 14 Premier League appearances. The central defender has recently returned to action with club and country, and has worn the captain’s armband for Tottenham in Premier League games against Bournemouth and Fulham.

The aforementioned report adds that the Cordoba-born star wants to play in the Champions League regularly and compete for trophies elsewhere if the North London outfit are unable to match his ambitions.
