If Vicario is thinking of moving on then it probably only speeds up a process that would have been partially in motion on the club’s side as well.

He was, publicly at least, one of the Spurs figures who seemed to take the vitriol in the Fulham loss on the chin the best.

But, despite his obvious qualities, Tottenham probably need to upgrade if they are to reach their long-term objectives of regularly challenging for trophies.

Since his arrival in 2023 it has been identified by rivals that swinging balls in high towards him in a crowded penalty area is a potential weakness, and for all his shot-stopping ability he has been targeted in this way.

January seems a very destabilising time to lose a starting keeper, although should Frank not last until then everything would be up in the air, but it would be no shock to see Vicario move on in the summer.

“Matthew Craig, another one who needs to go out, didn’t get a loan, which he should have got in the summer contract coming to an end. I expect if Tottenham can find him a club that will take him now, they’ll let him go for free.

“So there are lots of players that need those opportunities, and this may be why the Premier League has had this break to allow players to try at other clubs”
