How many millions Tottenham have lost out on from lack of stadium naming rights deal

Tottenham opened their state-of-the-art stadium in April 2019, but have yet to secure a naming rights deal.

Since then, Spurs have lifted the Europa League title, Daniel Levy has departed and music’s icons have graced the North London stage.

However, with no deal in place, the Lilywhites have been missing out on a substantial stream of income.

Here, Tottenham News analyses exactly how much money the Premier League club has lost since their stadium opened.

Tottenham have missed out on around £90m without naming rights deal

Spurs may have secured a £90million media rights deal, but they have lost around the same figure because of their stubbornness with their 62,850-capacity facility.

MORE SPURS STORIES

In February, Football Insider reported that the North London outfit had missed out on approximately £75m of extra revenue after turning down naming rights offers for their stadium.

It is understood that Tottenham have been holding out for £25m a year, with Levy turning down offers between £10-15m a year.

When using the rejected figures as a starting point, that means that the Lilywhites have now missed out on up to £90m in potential revenue.

However, when calculating based on their desired figure of £25m a year, it works out to be around £150m lost over six years.

What is the state of play with a Spurs naming rights deal?

Nike and DHL have been linked with Tottenham in terms of a naming rights deal, but neither has come to fruition.

Since then, the Premier League club are in a stronger financial position now that they are a Champions League side.

That is because competing in Europe’s premier competition increases exposure, which in turn increases value for a naming partner.

It is believed that the North London side are seeking a 10-15-year deal, meaning that they could land between £250-375m if they secure the deal they desire.

There were reports over the summer that Spurs were close to finalising a naming rights deal with a Saudi entity, meaning that news could be on the horizon.

However, the longer the wait goes on, the more synonymous the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium name becomes among supporters.

Tottenham at centre of record takeover bid, set to change face of Premier League overnight

Description

Tottenham could be about to become one of the most envied teams in world football amid news of a mammoth takeover bid.

ENIC have publicly stated Tottenham’s not for sale, having been involved with Spurs since the late 1990s.

That came amid the fallout from Daniel Levy’s shock exit from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium earlier this month.

However, there have been murmurings behind the scenes that the Lewis family would be open to big-money bids, one of which may now be imminent.

Brooklyn Earick leads plan to purchase Tottenham for £4.5bn

Amanda Staveley was previously linked with a takeover at Tottenham, but that ultimately came to little in the end.

MORE SPURS STORIES

Meanwhile, a Hong Kong-based consortium is also said to have approached Spurs, but once again that led to nothing.

Now, The Sun reports on 25 September that a fresh bid is about to be launched – and it is one that could change the landscape of the Premier League.

A U.S consortium is said to be launching a record £4.5billion takeover bid, which includes £3.3bn to buy out the entire club from ENIC and the Lewis family.

The other £1.2bn will be set aside for what is described as player budget, which is made up of wages, fees and agent payments.

The report, written by Martin Lipton, says Spurs could blow the likes of Manchester City, Chelsea and indeed Arsenal out of the water if the takeover goes through.

Brooklyn Earick is said to be leading the ‘Tottenham 3.0’ project, which would instantly put Spurs at the top of the Premier League pile overnight.

Tottenham squad could be transformed with huge takeover

Former scout Bryan King exclusively told Tottenham News this week that ENIC could plough £200m into the Spurs squad in January.

That would be a welcome boost, of course, but news of this fresh takeover would simply blow that sum out of the water.

There is the small matter of PSR, of course, but Spurs have managed to spend within their means for a number of years and have a little more flexibility than some.

While the details are still few and far between at this stage, this is a truly exciting development and one that could see Spurs enter a whole new era imminently.

Description

Spurs moved into the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in 2019, and it still stands as one of the best stadiums in European football.

Tottenham moved out of White Hart Lane in 2017, playing at Wembley Stadium for under two years before their state-of-the-art stadium was opened.

The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium has earned rave reviews for it’s facilities, and the stadium design could prove inspirational for other grounds.

Premier League rivals Newcastle are now looking towards Tottenham for inspiration, amid a new development over their own stadium plans.

Newcastle to follow Tottenham’s example over new stadium

Newcastle are yet to decide whether to build a new stadium or revamp St James’ Park, but their owners PIF could take a leaf out of ENIC’s book.

MORE SPURS STORIES

A state-of-the-art stadium could be built to replace St James’ Park, and if this decision is made, then Newcastle could aim to build a multi-purpose arena, like Tottenham’s.

The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium plays host to NFL matches and concerts when not being used for football, and this brings in extra revenue for the club.

As reported by the Daily Mai on 25 September, the “hope” by those wanting to push for a new stadium is that Newcastle would follow the model of building a self-sustaining ground like Tottenham’s, which will host a lot of other events.

Tottenham Hotspur Stadium’s other events

Tottenham do earn significant revenue from hosting NFL matches and concerts, but a lot of fans are not too enamoured by this benefit of their stadium.

Spurs fans derided announcements that Beyonce was set to perform at the stadium after a dreadful league campaign last season.

Several other big-name acts have performed at the stadium, and Armenian metal band System of a Down will perform at Tottenham next summer.

Ticket prices at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium have been a contentious point among Spurs fans, with recent games against Villarreal and Doncaster United failing to sell out as fans did not want to pay premium prices.

Other clubs may follow suit as Spurs lead the way with their multi-purpose venue, which has clearly gone down well in boardrooms, but less so among fans.

Tottenham Hotspur women made a winning start to their Women’s League Cup campaign with a victory over Aston Villa.

Spurs won the game 7-6 on penalties after both sides failed to find the net with Lize Kop shining in net for Martin Ho’s side.

However, the game was overshadowed by reports of alleged racist abuse that was directed towards forward Jess Naz.

Tottenham’s League Cup victory overshadowed

The WSL replied to Tottenham Hotspur Women’s tweet about the incident.

They said: “We are appalled to hear that Jess Naz was subjected to disgusting racial abuse last night.

“This hate-fuelled behaviour is contrary to our beliefs and values as an organisation and there is no room for racism in sport or society.”

The Lionesses also released a statement in response to the racist abuse.

They said: “We stand with Jess.

“There is no room for racism, be that in football or any walk of life.”

Naz states the importance of addressing abusive behaviour

Prior to both statements being made, Naz posted on her Instagram account stating she had been subjected to racial abuse in her direct messages.

She said: “I was going to wait till after the game to speak because I’m done being quiet.

“I was subjected to racial abuse in my DM’s.

“Racism in any form is unacceptable and it is important to address this behaviour, and ensure that steps are taken to prevent it from happening again.”

The 25-year-old made the switch from rivals Arsenal to Tottenham in 2018, and has made over 100 appearances since arriving.

Naz also has six England appearances to her name.

England teammate and defender Jess Carter was also subjected to racial abuse in July during the victorious Euro 2025 campaign.

Real Madrid tipped to line up Lucas Bergvall deal as Tottenham face transfer battle - tottenhamhotspurnews.com
Description

Lucas Bergavll is turning into an undroppable talent for Tottenham head coach Thomas Frank.

Last season, Bergvall was thrust into the first team by Ange Postecoglou and became a rare success story in North London.

This term, Bergvall has continued to flourish at Spurs, but worryingly, this has attracted unwanted attention from abroad.

Indeed, with talk of European heavyweights Real Madrid interested, the Lilywhites face a struggle to keep him.

This story includes exclusive comment from former Premier League midfielder Martin Allen.

MORE SPURS STORIES

Lucas Bergvall bound to attract Real Madrid interest after Tottenham performances

Bergvall has surprised even his Spurs teammates this season, with Joao Palhinha in disbelief that he was just 19 years of age.

Of course, that is unsurprising, given that the teenager has continued to stand out in North London, despite the whole team’s recent success.

Now, former Brentford manager Allen – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – believes that Spurs will do well to keep hold of him.

“He’s got his best years ahead of him,” Allen said.

“Tottenham must have tied him down to a long-term contract because clubs like Real Madrid are going to be looking at him; they are going to be taking an interest.

“So they’re going to do well to keep hold of him, I think.”

How much would Real Madrid have to pay for Lucas Bergvall?

Tottenham have found it hard to resist Real Madrid in the past, and the same could be true if they make an offer for Bergvall.

Indeed, there have been a host of world-class players at the North London club in the past, with a couple making the move to the Spanish capital.

Luka Modric and Gareth Bale made the move to Real Madrid within almost a year of each other between 2012 and 2013.

Both went on to achieve great success for Los Blancos, and Bergvall will only be too aware of their journeys.

While Bale went for a fee of £85million, which is an astonishing figure for that time, the Sweden international could demand an even higher number.

At 19, the midfielder has a ceiling that cannot be seen, meaning that a figure of around £100m should be expected.

However, the best thing that Bergvall can do is focus on his Tottenham career and deliver success in North London.

Description

Thomas Frank can be more than happy with his start to life at Tottenham, helped by some positive summer transfer business.

Tottenham saw off Doncaster Rovers in the Carabao Cup in midweek and are third in the Premier League after five matches.

Mohammed Kudus joined Tottenham from West Ham and has taken little time to settle into his new surroundings, while the likes of Xavi Simons and Joao Palhinha are also finding their feet.

The summer transfer window may only have closed this month, but already there appears to be plans in place for Spurs to get a deal over the line for a permanent deal in 2026.

Tottenham ready to trigger permanent Joao Palhinha transfer

Palhinha has been superb for Tottenham since joining on loan from Bayern Munich in the summer transfer window.

MORE SPURS STORIES

Indeed, the Portugal international was the best player on the field in the win over Doncaster on Wednesday.

Palhinha may have only signed on an initial loan deal, but Spurs have the option to turn that deal permanent.

And according to talkSPORT on 25 September, Frank is eager for that to happen sooner rather than later.

Palhinha has featured in all eight of Tottenham’s matches this season and has been a standout performer in the middle of the park.

How much would Joao Palhinha cost Tottenham?

As per widespread reports, Spurs have the option to purchase Palhinha for a fee of £27million.

That would be a steal in today’s market, especially when you consider Bayern Munich paid Fulham an initial £42.3m for the midfielder a little over a year ago.

Palhinha’s time at Bayern did not go to plan, but he still did enough to impress Spurs legend Harry Kane in Bavaria.

Indeed, speaking earlier this year, Kane told reporters of Palhinha: “He’s tough, he tackles hard, he’s good on the ball, he knows the Premier League well from his time at Fulham and he’s a guy that will give everything for you.”

Spurs fans have taken no time at all to fall in love with Palhinha, and the hope now is that his loan move is made permanent in time for the start of next year.

Mathys Tel’s top five career moments that will surely offer Tottenham fans hope - tottenhamhotspurnews.com
Description

Tottenham supporters may be wondering why their club ever signed Mathys Tel, and that would be fair.

Spurs paid around £30million for Tel this summer, turning his loan from Bayern Munich into a permanent deal.

While he did not exactly light up the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium during his loan spell, things look even more dire now.

However, given that the forward is just 20 years of age, there is every chance that he could turn around his form in North London.

Here, Tottenham News looks back at Tel’s top five career moments that demonstrate exactly what he is capable of.

MORE SPURS STORIES

Mathys Tel won the UEFA European Under-17 Championship with France

While North London has been a place of struggle, Tel has found salvation with France, showcasing his talent on the international stage.

Indeed, the 20-year-old’s record for France speaks for itself, which should encourage fans that there is a player in there.

In 2022, Tel delivered three goals and an assist on the way to France’s triumph in the under-17 Euros, scoring against Bulgaria and Poland.

Furthermore, the forward captained his side on four occasions, crucially doing so in the final against the Netherlands.

Mathys Tel provides quality moment for Tottenham in the FA Cup

Tel’s gleaming moment in a Spurs shirt came in last season’s FA Cup fourth round tie with Aston Villa.

While the match ended in a 2-1 defeat for Ange Postecoglou’s side, the Frenchman delivered a moment of class for the Lilywhites.

Tottenham ring leader Dejan Kulusevski provided a curling inswinger into the Villa box, which Tel smartly finished past the helpless Emi Martinez.

Not only did he score, but Tel also drew plaudits from Gary Lineker, who described his strike as “exquisite”.

Mathys Tel breaks records for Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich signed Tel from Stade Rennais in 2022 for just over £17m during his fledgling years.

In 2022, the forward made history for the Bavaria club by becoming their youngest-ever goalscorer at 17 years and 126 days.

The Frenchman bagged in Bayern’s 5-0 thrashing of Viktoria Cologne in the DFB Cup, snatching the record from Jamal Musiala, who was 79 days younger when he achieved the feat.

The Tottenham man bags another brace on international duty

While Tel is yet to score a hat-trick during his career, he has notched several braces for his national team.

Earlier this month, the former Bayern man put his club form behind him and produced an inspirational performance yet again for his country.

It took Tel less than two minutes to score for the France under-21s against Serbia, curling the ball into the top corner with his left foot from outside the box.

Then, in the second half stoppage time, the 20-year-old finished emphatically from close range with his right foot to make it 3-0.

Mathys Tel links up with potential Tottenham returnee Harry Kane

There has been significant talk of Kane returning to Spurs over the past couple of weeks, with many believing he could come back next summer.

That news should have pricked the ears of Tel, who linked up well with the England international during his time at Bayern.

Indeed, in April of last year, Tel started as a right-winger for the Bavaria club against Union Berlin, with Kane playing as a sole striker.

The Frenchman first provided Leon Goretzka with an assist before Kane then teed him up for a goal of his own.

Tel finished the match with a goal and assist in the 5-0 drubbing, highlighting his threat when surrounded by world-class players.

Tottenham coasted into the fourth round of the EFL Cup by beating Doncaster Rovers on Thursday to continue a positive start to life under Thomas Frank.

Tottenham were 3-0 victors over Doncaster in a game where they were seldom troubled at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Spurs also sit fifth in the infant Premier League table through five games and Tottenham won their Champions League opener 1-0 against Villarreal.

Jamie O’Hara and Jason Cundy were discussing Spurs‘ start to the season with a caller on the Sports Bar on Thursday, when the former was delivered some unwanted news during the discussion.

O’Hara reacts Tottenham’s Carabao Cup draw

Frank saw Tottenham make light work of Doncaster but the next stage of the competition promises to be an altogether different challenge as Tottenham against holders Newcastle United at St James’ Park.

MORE SPURS STORIES

Spurs fan O’Hara was evidently annoyed by a tricky draw as he reacted live on talkSPORT to the news.

He said: “Michael Brown what are you doing? We’ve got the draw on, I’m fuming with Michael Brown right, he’s pulled Tottenham out of the hat.

“Newcastle away, it’s so annoying. It’s one of the hardest fixtures in the whole draw.”

O’Hara had already sent a cheeky message to Newcastle fans but he was not feeling quite so confident following the fourth-round draw.

Tottenham and Frank have difficult records to overcome

Tottenham’s recent record at St James’ Park is shocking and doesn’t bode well for O’Hara if he hopes to have the last laugh.

The last Spurs manager to leave Tyneside with a victory was Nuno Espirito Santo in 2021 when Steve Bruce was in charge of the Magpies.

While in charge of Brentford, Frank shared a similar record against Howe’s Newcastle to what his new club does, overcoming the North East side just once in the last eight meetings (one win, eight losses).

The Danish manager will hope for a more favourable outcome with his Spurs squad but it is more than fair to say that a midweek trip to Tyneside represents one of the trickier ties that were available.

Still, if you are going to compete for major honours on a regular basis then you have to beat the better teams in the competition to do so and this represents a good test for Frank and his Spurs charges.

Daniel Levy's exit now looks like a real problem as Tottenham face huge Premier League rule overhaul - tottenhamhotspurnews.com
Description

Tottenham have a completely different look compared to last season, and Daniel Levy’s departure has only added to the uncertainty.

Levy resigned as Tottenham chairman to the delight of many Spurs fans, as it was news many have been begging for.

In June, Levy decided to sack Ange Postecoglou and replace him with Thomas Frank, despite the former breaking the club’s 17-year wait for a trophy.

Many Spurs fans criticised Levy, but something fans might not want to hear is that Levy would have been the perfect fit for a new Premier League rule change that is coming into play.

Tottenham could now suffer with proposed UEFA-style ‘squad cost rule’

Levy was known for being tightfisted with his cash whilst at Tottenham, and many fans felt their former chairman kept money for himself.

MORE SPURS STORIES

The Sun has reported in its print edition (25 September, page 47) that Premier League clubs may be asked to vote on whether to switch financial rules or not.

A debate over the planned move from Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) to a UEFA-style squad cost ratios (SCR) was held at a shareholders’ meeting on Tuesday night.

SCR would see clubs be restricted to spending a maximum of 85% of their revenue on wages and transfer fees.

According to a Deloitte Football Money League report in 2025, Spurs’ wage bill took just 42 per cent of their annual revenue, while a lower percentage is expected for annual transfer fees.

Levy has always been able to keep Spurs’ spending down so that they stayed as a healthy, profitable club. The rule change would have been perfect for Levy with Tottenham.

Thomas Frank and Spurs may suffer from the Premier League rule change

There’s chaos behind the scenes at Spurs right now as Joe Lewis‘ family is more involved in the Tottenham boardroom.

The Lewis family face an issue with Fabio Paratici, which could already halt any January transfer window plans.

Frank and his side have made a good start this season, and come January they may need a boost of new signings to achieve success this year.

However, with this potential rule change amid the madness happening behind closed doors, it could be a recipe for disaster.

Description

Thomas Frank gave Mathys Tel a rare start in the Carabao Cup as Tottenham took on Doncaster Rovers on home soil.

As expected, it was a straightforward Wednesday evening for the Lilywhites, with Joao Palhinha and Brennan Johnson on the scoresheet in the 3-0 win.

Several fringe players started the encounter, but Tel was unable to grasp his Tottenham chance, spurning several promising opportunities.

Not only did the Tel have a night to forget, but he was also involved in a flashpoint that has come under the microscope.

This article contains the exclusive opinion of former Premier League and FIFA-listed referee Keith Hackett.

MORE SPURS STORIES

Andy Madley should have given a yellow card for foul on Mathys Tel

Tottenham progressed to the fourth round of the Carabao Cup and will face a stern test away to Newcastle United in the next round.

Having been omitted from Frank’s Champions League squad, Tel is set to be limited to domestic cup appearances as well as the odd Premier League start.

The Frenchman attempted to make inroads past the Doncaster backline, but Glenn Middleton’s sliding tackle brought him down near the touchline.

Referee Madley awarded a foul against Donny’s winger, but decided against brandishing a yellow card.

When analysing the incident, Hackett – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – believes it was a clear bookable offence.

“There is lenient, then there is lenient,” Hackett said.

“Andy Madley not sanctioning this challenge is disappointing. It does not matter if he believes he is comfortably in control.

“Overlooking a challenge of this nature is unacceptable. he should do his job and apply the demands of the law. This is a clear yellow card offence.“

Will Thomas Frank continue to give Mathys Tel chances at Tottenham?

Some Spurs supporters are frustrated by Tel’s performances and are questioning why the North London club decided to sign him.

So far, Frank has opted to play the 20-year-old against weaker opposition, making starts against West Ham and Doncaster.

However, Tel has not done anything of note in either game, meaning that his head coach has a decision to make.

While there will be more favourable games to come, continuing to play the Frenchman is a risk, especially if Spurs don’t deliver results.

Furthermore, with Randal Kolo Muani to come back from injury, chances are surely going to become more sparse.

Indeed, if Tel’s opportunities diminish before the winter window, then that will trigger speculation of a possible January loan move, and rightly so.
