Dominic Solanke ‘lucky’ as striker in line to start crucial Tottenham clash vs Wolves - tottenhamhotspurnews.com
Description

Dominic Solanke is expected to start Tottenham Hotspur‘s next game with Wolves despite his recent performances.

The striker has found the back of the net once in his last nine matches, in the 3-1 loss to Crystal Palace in March.

He is yet to score under Roberto De Zerbi, and he needs to step up, if Spurs are to avoid relegation to the Championship.

The England hopeful has notched three goals in 14 Premier League appearances this season, and he needs to add that tally significantly before the campaign concludes.

Tottenham will hope that he can, as that is their best chance of survival.

Why Solanke will start in Tottenham vs Wolves

John Wenham believes that Solanke will start Tottenham’s crucial clash with the Old Gold, due to a stroke of luck.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, he said: “He was basically invisible against Sunderland, and that was really disappointing, and I’ll be honest, I thought he was quite poor in the Brighton game.

“He’s a player that I’ve picked out many times before. I still think he’s our best striker, but I think he’ll count himself lucky that we can’t keep changing things, with just five games to go.

“I think he will start the game at Wolves and be given another opportunity, but he could really do with grabbing himself a goal as well.”

Where has it gone wrong for Solanke?

Solanke’s struggles this season are primarily due to injury issues.

The forward has missed a total of 33 matches for club and country after undergoing ankle surgery in September.

That has not allowed him to get any rhythm, and the fact that the team have been struggling has not helped him since he came back into the action.

De Zerbi needs him to find something urgently, because he cannot justify his selection using the lucky reason that Wenham has suggested.

The manager can’t hope that the former Bournemouth man miraculously returns to form to save his team, that is not how the game works.

He needs momentum and confidence, and the only way that he will get that is to score again, and it could open up the floodgates for the 28-year-old.

‘Jan Paul van Hecke will earn £60m move after what I seen against Tottenham’ - tottenhamhotspurnews.com
Description

Jan Paul van Hecke has been tipped for a mega-money move after his showing against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.

Roberto De Zerbi‘s side looked to be heading for a crucial victory, before the defender helped the ball to Georginio Rutter for the late leveller.

It was a heartbreaking blow for the Lilywhites, who are trying desperately to escape a humiliating relegation.

Van Hecke was one of the standout players in the contest, on both sides of the ball, and is someone that the N17 outfit could have their eye on.

Tottenham are in the market for a centre-back when the summer transfer market reopens, and the Dutchman would fit the bill.

Why Van Hecke has been tipped for £60m move after Tottenham draw

John Wenham believes that Tottenham will not be in the race for Van Hecke, despite his excellent performance, but he can see a £60million move on the cards.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, he said: “Van Hecke, the first time I have watched him up close for Brighton, my God, what a good player he is.

“I could see him talking about maybe Liverpool, getting a Van Dijk replacement at some

point, Van Hecke is extremely good, and until you watch him up close and personal in

the match, you don’t realise that he’s so authoritative.

“He lets you know he’s there with the power and velocity of his challenges, and obviously he pushed up towards the end to win the ball and set up Georginio Rutter for the equaliser.

“I noticed Fabrizio Romano tweeted that he’s recently switched agencies as well, which is normally, an indication that a player is sort of lining up either a new contract or a summer

move away.

“For Brighton, it would be a huge loss, but someone in the Premier League is going to pick up an outstanding centre back there, I don’t think it will be Tottenham because we’ve heard they are advancing in talks for Marcos Senesi from Bournemouth on a free transfer.

“Van Hecke is very, very good, and for me looked, all the part of a 60 million pound centre back, maybe more.”

How Van Hecke compares to Marcos Senesi?

Van Hecke compares favourably to reported Spurs target Senesi.

The Argentine has won 52 per cent of his ground duels and 48.5 per cent of aerial battles this season, compared to 60.6 per cent and 57.1 per cent for the Dutchman, per Fotmob.

The Lilywhites’ main target makes 1.77 tackles per game, 1.55 interceptions per game,

Meanwhile, Van Hecke makes 1.56 tackles per game, 1.21 interceptions per game, 3.06 recoveries per game and 5.35 clearances per game.

It looks as though Van Hecke may well be the better option, but he may be less attainable for the North London side.

Tottenham squad age reveal is what could hinder Premier League survival

Tottenham squad age reveal is what could hinder Premier League survival - tottenhamhotspurnews.com
Description

Tottenham Hotspur are staring down the barrel of relegation, and Roberto De Zerbi’s job of keeping them up could prove harder than expected.

It is a position that is ultimately unacceptable for a team that are on the back of winning a European trophy, and blame should lie with the board at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The issues lie deeper than just what is happening on the pitch.

Not only have managerial decisions backfired on multiple occasions this season, but the ambition in the market and methodology with squad-building may succumb Spurs to the Championship.

Ahead of Tottenham’s relegation battle, the squad make-up in N17 may define where Spurs play their football next season.

How experienced is Tottenham’s squad?

According to Gradient Sports, who have conducted a review of each Premier League squad, Tottenham have handed the third lowest minutes to “experienced players”.

In their review, this includes those within the age range of 29.1 to 34. Additionally, those minutes would have gone to Guglielmo Vicario and Joao Palhinha this season.

Overall, Tottenham also have the third youngest average squad based on minutes, with an average age of 25.37.

While chasing a young squad is ideally the goal for future success, this may end up backfiring in the relegation battle this season.

The lack of experience may ultimately be why Spurs have failed to get results over the line. This season, the North London outfit has taken the lead in fixtures on 14 occasions and has won just 50 per cent of those games, with four draws and three losses.

When fighting for Premier League survival, having that experience is a difference maker, and the makeup of the Lilywhites’ squad lacks talent with that in their locker.

However, that is not to say they do not have any experienced options. The age of the squad is not the only issue ENIC faces in Tottenham’s squad building.

Roberto De Zerbi must used those with experience beyond their years

There are players in Tottenham’s squad that have experienced the highs and lows in football regardless of their age.

Richarlison, for example, while falling outside of the “experienced” threshold at 28 years old, has been part of relegation battles before with Everton.

De Zerbi can turn to players such as the Brazilian and utilise his time in Merseyside as a way to motivate Spurs for the final five games of the season.

The N17 outfit is just two points behind West Ham, and there is plenty of time for the tables to turn at the bottom of the league.

Tynan Thompson could be Tottenham's difference-maker as Premier League 2 exploits on show again - tottenhamhotspurnews.com
Description

Tynan Thompson deserves a chance to showcase his worth for Tottenham Hotspur.

Let’s face it, the senior players in North London have been nothing short of an embarrassment for the most part of the season, and that was again on show against Brighton.

The performance was improved, but the lack of character was exposed again as the Seagulls grabbed a late equaliser to prevent Spurs from securing their first win of the year (we are almost in May).

That lack of character is not something that can be fixed overnight, but it can be washed out by the injection of youth, with several players having shown their worth in the Premier League 2.

Thompson is one of them, and Roberto De Zerbi needs to become aware of the quality he could bring to the relegation battle.

Tynan Thompson shows Tottenham what they’re missing

Xavi Simons aside, who is not a winger, you’d find it hard to name a wide player that has had a positive influence for Spurs this season, at least at senior level.

But at youth level, there have been several, and Thompson is right up there.

Across 22 appearances for the Under-21s and the Under-19s, Thompson has 17 goal involvements, having grabbed another in the 2-0 win over Blackburn.

The 18-year-old was fearless in his performance, as he has been all season, but he also had the quality to back it up.

At this stage in the campaign, Spurs need to roll the dice and try something out of the ordinary, and Thompson may well be able to provide it.

Roberto De Zerbi must avoid error made by Igor Tudor

When Igor Tudor was appointed, many thought he would make dramatic changes in a bid to keep Spurs in the Premier League.

He didn’t, and nothing changed. At least not in a good way.

De Zerbi can’t afford to make the same mistake, and with several youth stars knocking on his door, he has to give them the chance.

Whether it be Thompson or one of the other teens excelling above their age, they can certainly make a difference in the Premier League.

Roberto De Zerbi tactics have already given Tottenham obvious blueprint to beat the drop

Roberto De Zerbi tactics have already given Tottenham obvious blueprint to beat the drop - tottenhamhotspurnews.com
Description

It felt like an almighty release of emotion months in the making.

Xavi Simons whipped off his shirt and jumped into the crowd after putting Tottenham Hotspur in front against Brighton with 13 minutes remaining on the clock. With players and the crowd wrapped up in those wild, jubilant scenes, it felt like the dam had finally cracked.

But, of course, nothing is simple with Spurs anymore. There would be no lasting release. That much was proven when the visitors hit back at the death to force a 2-2 draw, leaving Roberto De Zerbi‘s side still teetering inside the relegation zone.

It didn’t have to be like this. Spurs had delivered a drastically improved performance, both in tactical understanding and sheer, unadulterated effort. There will have been numerous positives for De Zerbi to take in the build-up to this weekend’s make-or-break trip to Wolves.

While the result against Brighton proved to be bitterly disappointing at the last, the blueprint is now in place and promises to help keep Tottenham in the Premier League.

Tottenham tactics can keep them up

De Zerbi warned after replacing Igor Tudor that there would be no drastic changes. There simply wasn’t the time. No smoking gun, no revolution. Instead, he promised a renewed focus on the basics, as well as the relentless press he has become synonymous with.

For large swathes against Brighton, this back-breaking work paid off handsomely.

Just look at the build-up before Simons restored Spurs’ lead. Lucas Bergvall swarmed Jan Paul van Hecke before dispossessing him and sliding the ball across to the Dutchman. He then did the rest, twisting and turning before arrowing beyond Bart Verbruggen.

It was ruthlessly simple. Tottenham’s calculated press began as soon as Brighton looked to play out. Their triggers were clear for all to see, but the visitors couldn’t get a grip on them. Time and again, they were swarmed around their box, leading to turnovers and chances.

But with Spurs these days, there is always a catch. Simons’ devilish cross to tee up Pedro Porro and his thumping 77th-minute strike moved the hosts to the cusp of winning a Premier League match for the first time since December, before it was snatched away from them.

Cruelly, there was little Simons could do to stop it. Having moved mountains for so long, he was spent when Brighton flooded forward in the final few seconds. It was cruel that he seemingly pulled up with cramp in his left leg when Georginio Rutter equalised.

As if balancing on a knife-edge, Simons went from ecstasy to the verge of tears in milliseconds. His moment of magic should have broken Spurs’ four-month winless streak.

The fact that Tottenham played so well yet came away with so little boggles the mind. De Zerbi has clearly already instilled his non-negotiables into his squad. Hard work is king, as is attitude. Players who arrived at training on Monday not smiling risked being sent back home.

They hounded their opponents on Saturday night, giving the crowd reason to row in behind them. The atmosphere was fervent, fuelled by the sight of each of Spurs’ players running forward with purpose, closing down the visitors and expertly shutting off passing lanes.

It was telling that Spurs scored two goals from high turnovers – their highest tally this season. They could only manage one against Fulham back in November and one against Arsenal on February 22. Already, the fruits of De Zerbi’s labour are beginning to show.

There is a new hunger in the squad, demonstrated when Bergvall, who had hardly been on the pitch 60 seconds, robbed the ball off Van Hecke and teed up Simons.

Tottenham covered a distance of 113.6km against Brighton, already an improvement on the 111.34 registered at Sunderland in De Zerbi’s opening match in charge. They also sprinted more last time out, the 8.86 per cent trumping the 8.24 they managed on Wearside.

There was a clear difference in xG, too, 0.98 compared to 0.7. Forward passes were also up from 118 to 124, while they made 14 tackles, four more than at the Stadium of Light.

What these numbers prove is that De Zerbi’s high-energy style is beginning to filter through. It is an approach that promises to keep them in the top-flight by the skin of their teeth.

Roberto De Zerbi’s instant impact

In the lead-up to the draw with Brighton, De Zerbi looked to stitch his wounded squad back together by treating them to a swanky team-bonding meal at a Mayfair restaurant. He also promised more expensive dinners if they were able to secure victory in his first home match.

For a while, this dangling carrot looked to have done the trick.

News of West Ham’s goalless draw at Crystal Palace on Monday night was met with a resounding sigh of relief in N17, but Spurs still have it all to do. It is just as well, then, that De Zerbi has bullishly insisted they can win all five of their remaining matches to beat the drop.

Whether he will echo that sentiment in private is unknown, but what is clear is that Spurs made a major mistake not moving for the 46-year-old sooner.

They will just hope that lapse in judgement doesn’t dump them into the Championship.

Troy Deeney slams Xavi Simons celebrations amid Tottenham relegation call

Troy Deeney slams Xavi Simons celebrations amid Tottenham relegation call - tottenhamhotspurnews.com
Description

Troy Deeney says he didn’t like Xavi Simons’ over-the-top celebration against Brighton, while admitting he is really worried for Tottenham Hotspur.

Simons arguably had his best game in a Tottenham shirt but couldn’t stop Brighton twice coming from behind to secure a 2-2 draw on Saturday.

Roberto De Zerbi‘s side showed signs of promise at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium but their recent fragilities were plain to see.

Simons bagged a goal and an assist in the draw, with the Netherlands international sparking wild celebrations after scoring what he thought was a 77th-minute winner.

The former RB Leipzig man was on the verge of tears when the final whistle blew as Tottenham still search for a first Premier League win since 28 December.

Xavi Simons named in team of the week

Tottenham forked out £51.8million to sign Simons from RB Leipzig last summer, but so far, he has not lived up to that hefty fee.

A return of two goals and five assists in the Premier League is nothing to write home about, although Simons was a cut above the rest against Brighton.

After scoring a brilliant goal, Simons celebrated wildly, before raising his arms aloft to salute the Tottenham fans – something Deeney didn’t like.

The former Watford striker praised the 23-year-old’s “X-Factor” and picked him in his Premier League Team of the Week, but does not think Tottenham will stave off relegation to the Championship.

He wrote in his BBC Sport column: “I didn’t like the celebration when he scored against Brighton – I thought it was a bit too much, a bit Instagrammy. But Spurs have been poor of late, and his quality and the X-Factor he showed with the assist and goal could be how they stay up.

“I don’t think they will stay up – I’m really worried for them, but they need him to have five more games like that, and that will give them the best chance. Maybe if the defenders started to defend, they would have won the game instead of drawing it.”

Deeney also picked Fulham duo Bernd Leno and Joachim Andersen and Manchester City quartet Erling Haaland, Rayan Cherki, Bernardo Silva, and Nico O’Reilly in his best XI from the latest round of results.

Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk, Bournemouth’s Adrien Truffert, Nottingham Forest’s Morgan Gibbs-White, and Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins were also selected.

Xavi Simons needs to show Tottenham X-Factor again

Simons is one of Tottenham’s most expensive signings ever, but five goals and six assists in 40 matches in all competitions put him closer to the miss than hit category.

Simons’ highs and lows might just sum up Tottenham’s sorry state of affairs; ergo, they are too emotional during this relegation fight.

The ex-Paris Saint-Germain ace has undoubted quality, but he has struggled to adapt to the league’s physicality.

Via Sofascore, he has scored two goals from an xG tally of 2.96; he has missed three big chances, created seven big ones, and compiled a passing accuracy of 82 per cent in the Premier League.

Simons averages 3.2 ball recoveries per game and 1.2 tackles; his dribble success is at 44 per cent, while his ground duels won are up at 52 per cent.

He impressed against Brighton. Now, Simons needs to do it against Wolves and in Tottenham’s other remaining games.

Otherwise, they won’t be able to close that two-point gap to West Ham in 17th.

Roberto De Zerbi’s Mathys Tel snub makes no sense, Tottenham need him

Roberto De Zerbi’s Mathys Tel snub makes no sense, Tottenham need him - tottenhamhotspurnews.com
Description

It was telling that Roberto De Zerbi was quick to heap praise on Mathys Tel in his first press conference as Tottenham Hotspur boss.

“I know Mathys Tel, I wanted him in Marseille when I was there,” said the Italian. Those comments suggested that the young forward would go on to play a crucial role in this brave new era in North London, but instead, he has remained rooted to the substitutes’ bench.

It beggars belief why he has not been trusted more. Tel is everything that Spurs haven’t been. He is athletic, explosive and relentless in his work rate across the frontline, making him a complete – and much-needed – contrast to the wider club’s failings this season.

The sheer size of the task De Zerbi has inherited should not be forgotten. He now presides over a squad battered and bruised, and dangerously low on confidence. Their winless run in the league stands at 15 matches, one short of their worst-ever streak set 91 years ago.

But he only has himself to blame for not starting Tel in the defeat by Sunderland and the draw with Brighton, two damaging results that leave Spurs teetering over the trap door.

Why isn’t Mathys Tel playing more for Tottenham?

De Zerbi’s reason for not giving Tel more minutes appears to be simple.

He has made Dominic Solanke his first-choice No 9 and has so far been inclined to opt for other forwards over Tel out wide. “Dominic Solanke is one of the best strikers in the Premier League,” was De Zerbi’s bullish verdict ahead of the 2-2 draw with Brighton last time out.

Those words haven’t quite married up to reality, making it all the more mind-boggling that Tel hasn’t been given more opportunities to make the shirt his own. The 20-year-old offers versatility in multiple positions and is capable of both scoring and creating goals.

De Zerbi is known to value speed and athleticism up front, with his preferred style of play centred on drawing out opponents before exploiting the space in behind. This appears to make Tel the ideal fit, but he has been forced to watch on while his team-mates have toiled.

Tel has certainly fallen victim to the frequent changes at the club.

Under Thomas Frank, he found himself stuck behind Randal Kolo Muani, Wilson Odobert and Brennan Johnson, who was sold to Crystal Palace in January. He had arrived from Bayern Munich initially on loan, in a deal that contained an option to buy for around £48million.

Despite him being unable to impress during Ange Postecoglou‘s tenure, Spurs renegotiated with the Bundesliga giants and signed Tel permanently. By the time this happened, though, the Australian had been dismissed, with Frank chosen as his successor.

His woes have not abated even after the arrivals of Igor Tudor and, later, De Zerbi.

Tel remains determined to prove himself at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and is believed to see his future on the left wing. The fact that he has all too often flitted between the flanks, to the No 9 spot and then across to the bench hasn’t aided his cause.

His statistics this campaign suggest he should be given a more prominent role by De Zerbi.

Tel has made 26 appearances in the Premier League to date this term, starting just nine of them, while he has scored three goals and failed to record an assist. Naturally, these are underwhelming numbers, but he will be the first to argue that there are mitigating factors.

Indeed, his average of 38 minutes per game is preventing him from building up rhythm and confidence, not that you’d know it from his eye-catching 55 per cent dribble success rate.

Tel averages 1.0 shots per game, hardly a surprise due to Spurs’ insistence on only playing him out wide, while his expected assists tally stands at 1.43. He does, though, have a passing accuracy of 76 per cent, which must be improved.

Spurs need Tel inspiration

While it is true that Tel has relied on fleeting moments since arriving at Spurs, they are in desperate need of ingenuity. This maverick would be able to offer that in spades.

De Zerbi has helped to knit together a wounded dressing room and instilled the foundations for the fight against the dying light, but going back to basics will not decide matches alone. Tottenham will still need someone to fashion chances or put them away.

Tel seemingly ticks both of these boxes and should, therefore, be thrust back into the firing line for the must-win trip to basement club Wolves on Saturday afternoon.

Damningly, only Sheffield Wednesday, the Championship’s rock-bottom minnows, have picked up fewer points (four) than Spurs (six) across the top four leagues in 2026.

Tel’s limited minutes have coincided with this, so De Zerbi would do well to turn to him to bail his side out of a hole. Whether Spurs stay up may well depend on it.

Xavi Simons backed to become Tottenham icon after ‘magical’ Brighton scenes

Xavi Simons may have finally arrived as a Tottenham Hotspur player.

The Dutchman was signed for big money from RB Leipzig last summer, but he has failed to produce many moments of quality this season.

However, he notched a stunning goal and an assist in the 2-2 draw with Brighton, as Roberto De Zerbi‘s side were denied all three points at the death on 18 April.

It was an encouraging performance from the 22-year-old after months of struggling at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Tottenham need Simons to perform like that consistently if they are to have any chance of maintaining their place in the Premier League.

Why Simons can be an icon at Tottenham

Simons has been criticised by sections of Tottenham fans for his post-game antics, but John Wenham was blown away by his performance in the game.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, he said: “We saw the emergence of Xavi Simons as a real top-level player for Tottenham, and he can be a focal point and an icon of this team moving forward.

“He inherited Son’s number seven shirt, and we’ve seen glimpses, but this was an all-around performance where he was just a creative magician throughout.

“He got the assist for the first goal with a fantastically weighted ball, then his goal was just magical, I can’t remember celebrations like that at the South stand for such a long period of time.

“It was a magical moment for a magical player, which gives us hope.”

How Simons can prove to be worth every penny

Tottenham will pray that the former RB Leipzig man has finally arrived, because they need much more from him in the final few weeks.

He has five goals and cost £51million, which means he scores at a rate of £10.2million per goal at the moment.

That is not a worthwhile investment based on those figures, but if he can step up in the final few weeks and secure Spurs’ top-flight status, it may be worth every penny.

Then he can kick on next season with the Lilywhites still in the elite division and become a true star, like he was supposed to be in this campaign, after his transfer to the North London side.

Tottenham irony on full display as ENIC face £256m wage surgery amid relegation fears

Tottenham irony on full display as ENIC face £256m wage surgery amid relegation fears - tottenhamhotspurnews.com
Description

Tottenham Hotspur spent £256million on wages for the 2024-25 season, and that could be a huge problem for ENIC if the club get relegated.

Spurs have lost further ground in the race to stay in the Premier League after the conclusion of game week, with most of those around them doing well.

Roberto De Zerbi’s arrival may be too little too late, as the Lilywhites are facing financial hits on all fronts if they drop to the Championship.

Recent findings show that ENIC lost £94.7m in their 2024-25 accounts, and that will be nothing compared to what might be seen for the 2026-27 campaign.

Tottenham has been a tightly run ship over the last few years, and even in attempts to stay cheap, the club could now be testing their own limits through relegation.

Tottenham wage cap proves irony; here’s why

The Lilywhites will see some bonuses from this season, one mainly in the form of payments from UEFA for their progress in the Champions League.

However, this season has seen the club sack Thomas Frank, who cost £6.7m to hire and much more to fire, as Tottenham still need to pay off Igor Tudor‘s contract.

Tottenham were fixated on having a wage cap for so many years under Daniel Levy’s ownership, and it’s something that probably has stayed the same since the Lewis family took over.

As highlighted by X user Chris, Spurs rank seventh highest in the Premier League for money spent on wages during the 2024-25 season.

Though the £256m figure won’t be the same this campaign, there’s a good chance it could be more, which will obviously need to be cut down significantly if a drop to the Championship occurred.

ENIC earned £287m from commercial revenue in the 2024-25 season, just £31m more than the wages they spent on players.

There’s a good chance this revenue will be halved in the Championship, highlighting the massive obstacle that the Tottenham board faces with paying what could now be expensive wages after all.

Who could be valuable assets to offset?

The likes of James Maddison, Dejan Kulusevski, and Dominic Solanke among others are all on sky-high wages that will never have been seen in the Championship before.

A route that ENIC could go down to ease wage pressure if relegation occurs is to loan some star players out to top-flight sides, so that they are not paying the entirety of their wages.

Cristian Romero looks likely to leave, while the club may also listen to offers for Micky van de Ven, regardless of which division they are in.

Guglielmo Vicario also looks destined to depart N17 this summer, while interest in Lucas Bergvall is there.

There are plenty of big-name players that ENIC could sell or loan out, but these £200m plus findings show that wages could be the biggest downfall of Spurs after all, but not in the way that anybody expected.

James Maddison return could give Tottenham boost they need to avoid relegation

James Maddison return could give Tottenham boost they need to avoid relegation - tottenhamhotspurnews.com
Description

It’s simplistic to suggest that Tottenham Hotspur badly need wins, not crowd boosters.

But Roberto De Zerbi‘s decision to name James Maddison on the bench for the 2-2 draw with Brighton was seconds away from becoming his first masterstroke since taking charge.

It did have its desired effect after the news of his inclusion spread like wildfire around the ground ahead of kick-off. Supporters, after all, had been caught off guard after De Zerbi played down the playmaker’s chances of returning this season just days before.

Maddison hasn’t played since August, having suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury during Spurs’ pre-season friendly against Newcastle in South Korea. It was a surprise, then, that the 29-year-old was made available for the squad in North London on Saturday evening.

De Zerbi believes Spurs can win their remaining five matches to avoid relegation from the Premier League for the first time since 1977, but the clock is ticking.

Tottenham badly missing James Maddison

The Italian demanded his players report for training on Monday with a smile on their face, or they would be sent home. When they do get back to work, Maddison will be crucial in helping to lift spirits despite the cavernous trap door lurking below them.

There is no room for moping. The severity of this situation will leave no passengers unscathed. Somehow, Spurs must pick themselves up and dust themselves down after the brutal dagger that was Georginio Rutter’s last-gasp equaliser for Brighton.

With Maddison watching on from down the tunnel, having headed inside after not being brought on, Rutter arrived to rocket home the visitors’ leveller with seconds left on the clock. Everywhere you looked, Spurs players on their haunches littered the floor at the final whistle.

Maddison’s inclusion had been designed to prevent scenes like this. Naming him among the substitutes had been largely symbolic. If rumours are to be believed, he is not quite ready to make his return, meaning his spot on the bench was purely to help rouse his team-mates.

It has been a long and gruelling way back for the former Leicester man. He has been training with the first-team for a little while now, but at present, it is unlikely that he will be able to make his comeback before the end of the campaign. That will be a crying shame for Spurs.

He remains their most talented and creative attacking fulcrum, and it is no surprise that they have so sorely lacked thrust during his absence. They have also missed his leadership at a time when De Zerbi needs his players to help rally themselves.

Tellingly, Maddison came back out onto the pitch at full-time to console his squad-mates. While his return was a much-needed pick-me-up, it fell short of helping them secure a first Premier League victory since beating Crystal Palace on December 28.

Maddison will be desperate to be more than a glorified support act.

Last season, he was Tottenham’s highest-rated player on Sofascore with 7.30, narrowly ahead of Son Heung-min (7.27) and Pedro Porro (7.19). He scored nine top-flight goals from an expected goals (xG) tally of 5.83, demonstrating his clinical nature in and around the box.

He also registered seven assists and 1.3 key passes per 90 minutes for his team-mates, which they have missed this season. Since joining Spurs, he has made 58 top-flight appearances, scoring 13 times and bagging 16 assists, while also creating 108 chances.

These are deeply impressive numbers, but De Zerbi must press on without them.

Tottenham find balance vs Brighton

On a rather more positive note, Spurs finally found better balance against Brighton. Rodrigo Bentancur and Yves Bissouma worked well in tandem in the double pivot, while Xavi Simons stole the show in Maddison’s usual No 10 spot. De Zerbi deserves credit for these changes.

The new head coach admitted he had little time for complex tactics, but the simplistic approach has already led to two improved performances. Really, they deserved to finally clinch that elusive win. They were brave and almost played their way out of danger.

They created more chances and kept the ball with greater confidence. Players demanded the ball, and a notable uptick in tempo quickly brought the crowd onside. It is just a shame that all this may be forgotten after the manner of their last-minute disappointment.

How Maddison would complement this new approach.

De Zerbi will rue his inability to call upon him, potentially to the extent that he could be tempted to echo Ange Postecoglou’s downcast assessment last season.

Of course, the Australian infamously declared that the light at the end of the tunnel at Spurs too often turns out to be an oncoming train. But Maddison’s return is certainly not a false dawn. It is, in fact, a glimmer of hope when that is in dangerously short supply.
