Description

Tottenham Hotspur are one of the most historic British clubs, and plenty of legendary figures have graced the turf in North London over the years.

Ange Postecoglou wrote his name in Spurs history books by winning the UEFA Europa League with Tottenham, ending a 17-year trophy drought in North London.

His replacement, Thomas Frank, will be looking to build his own legacy in N17 and turn some of the players in his squad into Tottenham legends.

Here, Tottenham News takes a look at 10 legends that every Spurs supporter should know.

Son Heung-min – Forward (2015-2025)

Appearances: 454

Goals: 173

One of only four captains to lift a European trophy for Tottenham, Son Heung-min capped off his decade-long stay in North London by winning the Europa League before joining LAFC.

MORE SPURS STORIES

The South Korean left North London as Spurs’ fifth all-time top goalscorer.

Son declared himself a Tottenham legend after winning the Europa League and is arguably the most popular Spurs player from the modern era.

Harry Kane – Forward (2004-2023)

Appearances: 435

Goals: 280

Spurs’ greatest goalscorer of all time and arguably the best player to ever climb the ranks at Hotspur Way.

After several frustrating loan spells, Harry Kane finally burst onto the first-team scene at Tottenham, making his mark under Mauricio Pochettino.

The striker would go on to become Spurs’ all-time record goalscorer before joining Bayern Munich in 2023, where he has since won the Bundesliga and German Super Cup, after failing to win a trophy with Tottenham.

Jimmy Greaves – Forward (1961-1970)

Appearances: 379

Goals: 266

One of England’s greatest ever strikers, the late Jimmy Greaves held the record of Spurs’ greatest goalscorer for more than fifty years before Kane surpassed his tally.

However, where Kane failed to win trophies with Tottenham, Greaves did not have the same issue. In fact, the striker scored in two separate finals for Spurs, the 1962 FA Cup final and the 1963 European Cup Winners’ Cup final.

Greaves passed away on 19 September 2021, but will always be remembered among the Spurs faithful as arguably the club’s greatest ever striker.

Glen Hoddle – Midfielder (1975-1987)

Appearances: 490

Goals: 110

As well as being one of the most exciting players to ever feature for Tottenham, Hoddle also spent some time as the Lilywhites’ manager once his playing days were over.

The now-pundit was in charge of Tottenham between 2001 and 2003.

During his playing days, Hoddle often lit up the pitch at White Hart Lane with some magic moments and won both the FA Cup and UEFA Cup as a player for Tottenham.

Ledley King – Defender (1999-2012)

Appearances: 323

Goals: 14

A one-club man and arguably Spurs’ greatest-ever defender, King is adored in North London.

Persistent knee injuries prevented the impact the centre-back could make and forced him to retire at the age of 31, but his talent was there for all to see, with Thierry Henry famously referring to King as one of the best defenders he had ever faced – high praise.

King won the League Cup as Tottenham captain in 2008 and remains an ambassador of the club.

Danny Blanchflower – Midfielder (1954-1964)

Appearances: 382

Goals: 21

Perhaps the most successful period in Spurs’ history was the early 1960s, when Tottenham became the first club in the 20th century to win the double, lifting both the First Division and FA Cup in the 1960/61 season.

Blanchflower was a key component and captain of the double-winning side.

He was twice named FWA Footballer of the Year, showcasing just how good he was.

Bill Nicholson – Midfielder (1938-1954)

Appearances: 314

Goals: 6

Perhaps the greatest-ever Tottenham legend, after joining the Lilywhites as a member of the groundstaff in 1936, the late Bill Nicholson would go on to represent Tottenham as a player, coach, assistant manager and manager over the next 38 years.

Nicholson is Spurs’ greatest-ever manager, winning eight major honours during his time in charge, but his time as a player shouldn’t be forgotten.

Often affectionately referred to as ‘Mr. Tottenham’, Nicholson sadly passed away on 23 October 2004, aged 85.

Gareth Bale – Forward (2007-2013, 2020-2021)

Appearances: 237

Goals: 71

One of the greatest Tottenham players in the modern era, Bale lit up White Hart Lane with a host of sensational goals, famously scoring a hat-trick against Inter Milan at the San Siro, before moving to Real Madrid for a then-world record fee.

After winning everything there was to win in Madrid, including five UEFA Champions League titles, Bale returned to Tottenham on loan during the 2020/21 season.

Although his second spell with Tottenham wasn’t quite as productive, the Welshman demonstrated where his loyalty lies during the Europa League final as he posed with the Tottenham players for photos after their victory while working as a pundit for TNT Sports.

Steve Perryman (1969-1986)

Appearances: 854

Goals: 39

Perryman is Spurs’ all-time record appearances holder, and won several trophies during his 17-year stay at Tottenham, including two FA Cups, two League Cups and two UEFA Cups.

After the trophies he won and the loyalty he showed Spurs, it would be difficult not to recognise Perryman as one of the 10 greatest legends at Tottenham.

Pat Jennings – Goalkeeper (1964-1977)

Appearances: 591

Goals: 1

Largely considered one of the greatest goalkeepers in English football history, Jennings won the FA Cup, UEFA Cup and two League Cups during his stay with Tottenham.

He even scored a goal from his own penalty area in the 1967 Charity Shield match against Manchester United.

‘Massive’ Tottenham blow set to force Daniel Levy into heavy spending

Tottenham have a crucial piece of business to conduct in the next 12 days.

Everyone in North London knew how important this summer was going to be for Tottenham, especially after such a poor domestic campaign.

Thomas Frank was going to be tasked with Champions League football with a squad that finished just one place above the relegation zone in the Premier League.

So far, Spurs have passed the test fairly well, but the latest blow has served up a whole new challenge that could cause financial disturbances in the remainder of the window.

This article includes exclusive comment from former Tottenham goalkeeper Paul Robinson.

MORE SPURS STORIES

James Maddison needs to be replaced

James Maddison had a tough time at Tottenham last season, and things got even worse for the Englishman this summer.

Maddison suffered an ACL injury that will rule him out for the majority of the season, with Paul Robinson emphasising how Daniel Levy may now have to spend big to land his replacement.

“You can’t dress it up. It’s a massive blow for both him and Tottenham,” Robinson said exclusively to Tottenham News.

“Tottenham having to go into the transfer market, you would think in an area that they weren’t expecting to overspend or spend as heavily as they’re going to have to.

“And for Maddison, it’s a huge blow, but injuries are part of football. The type of player, the type of person that he is, the strength of the character that he’s got, he’ll come back from it, and there’s nothing else you can do.

“It’s going to be a long, tough road back for him, but I’ve got no doubt he’ll get back into the starting XI under Thomas Frank.”

Morgan Gibbs-White failure hurts even more now

Tottenham’s pursuit of Morgan Gibbs-White was well documented, but with Maddison now set for several months on the sidelines, the disappointment of losing out on him has been amplified.

He would have been the perfect replacement, but news of a new Nottingham Forest contract quickly subdued the likelihood of that deal going through.

Tottenham are closing in on the signing of Eberechi Eze, but he is unlikely to be a direct replacement for Maddison, and with 12 days left of the window, time is running out to secure it.

Tottenham ‘may have just lucked out’ as Maghnes Akliouche emerges as Savinho alternative

Description

Tottenham were interested in Manchester City star Savinho, but it now appears that a move for the winger is off.

Spurs were keen on signing Savinho but Man City are now unwilling to sell, meaning that Daniel Levy will need to move on to other targets.

Tottenham have now been linked with Monaco star Maghnes Akliouche as an alternative, and it is easy to see why.

Akliouche is a rising star in French football, and Thomas Frank will now be keen on adding him to his Tottenham side, given his similarities with Savinho.

How Akliouche’s experience compares to Savinho

Both Akliouche and Savinho come with similar levels of experience in European leagues, but Savinho has the advantage in this regard as a player who has featured in the Premier League for Man City.

MORE SPURS STORIES

At 23, the Frenchman is two years older than Savinho, and both have made limited appearances for their respective National Teams, and remarkably, both have similar levels of experience in the Champions League.

Akliouche has spent his entire career at Monaco after coming through the academy, while Savinho has featured for Atletico Mineiro, Girona, Man City and PSV Eindhoven.

What the stats say about Savinho and Akliouche

Akliouche is an obvious alternative to Savinho for Tottenham when it comes to the underlying stats, but with the Frenchman more naturally suited to the right wing, Mohammed Kudus could end up moving position.

Top-quality alternatives for Savinho are few and far between, but if Spurs can tie up a deal for Akliouche , they will be landing perhaps the most similar profile to the Brazilian in European football.

How much Maghnes Akliouche could cost Tottenham as Savinho alternative is identified

Tottenham are on the hunt for further attacking additions this summer and have identified Maghnes Akliouche as a potential target.

Spurs have already brought in Mohammed Kudus from West Ham, but Thomas Frank is keen to reinforce his winger further.

Savinho had been linked with Tottenham throughout the window, but this deal now looks unlikely to happen due to the potential cost.

Therefore, Spurs have identified Akliouche as a potential alternative. However, this could still cost the London club a pretty penny.

Akliouche set to cost Spurs at least £59m

If Tottenham want to sign Akliouche, Monaco are set to demand a hefty fee for the 23-year-old.

MORE SPURS STORIES

According to the Independent on 19 August, the Ligue 1 side wants £47.5million if they are to part with the Frenchman.

On top of this, the attacker could demand a wage increase if he is to leave Monaco.

Capalogy on 19 August estimates that Akliouche is currently earning £19,067-a-week, with three years left on his deal.

Considering how much Spurs currently pay their attackers, the 23-year-old will surely get a wage boost.

Therefore, if Tottenham were to offer Akliouche a four-year deal on £60,000-a-week, this package would cost the London club £12.06m. This is without including potential clauses and bonuses in his contract.

As a result, this wage package, on top of the fee demanded, would cost Spurs £59.56m.

How much do Tottenham’s attackers earn?

According to Capology, Tottenham’s first-team attackers currently earn massive amounts each week.

Not including the new signings, Spurs’ injury-hit James Maddison earns the most a week on £170,000, with Dejan Kulusevski and Richarlison following on £110,000 and £90,000.

Even Bryan Gil, who hasn’t played for Tottenham since the 2023/24 campaigns earns £60,000-a-week.

Therefore, it is likely that Akliouche will earn a substantial wage if he is to move to Spurs.

Hopefully, unlike Gil, he will quickly find a starting spot in the team and make an impact.

Savinho is beginning to feel like a player who will remain out of reach for Tottenham.

The Lilywhites are working hard to try and secure a replacement for Son Heung-min, after their club captain recently departed after a decade-long spell in N17.

Spurs’ chances of signing Savinho have now been dealt a fatal blow, as Manchester City will not sanction his exit under any circumstances in the final two weeks of the window.

That looks set to force Thomas Frank and Co. to look elsewhere to find their new wing wizard, and they may have already earmarked their man.

Tottenham want to sign Takefusa Kubo

City appear likely to reject all advances from Tottenham, which should ensure that Savinho remains beyond their reach until after the transfer window closes on 1 September.

MORE SPURS STORIES

Spurs have now had to quickly turn their attention elsewhere in a bid to bolster their options on the flanks, and they already have their eyes fixed firmly on their next target.

Frank’s side are now interested in signing Takefusa Kubo from Real Sociedad, according to Spanish outlet AS.

The Japanese star has a £43.2million release clause within his contract, and is also attracting interest from Atletico Madrid.

Sociedad are expecting to face pressure regarding the wideman until the very final days of the window, and it is thought that Spurs could now make a move, after showing an initial interest last season.

Kubo is a player of genuine quality, and his ability to carry the ball to devastating effect would make him the perfect alternative to Savinho for Frank to add to his attack.

How does Kubo compare to Savinho?

Tottenham have a busy few weeks ahead of them in the transfer market as they look to refine their squad even further.

Kubo could prove to be an excellent addition if they can get a deal done, as well as a potentially ideal alternative to Savinho.

He has been consistently productive in the final third for Sociedad for several seasons now, and as a result it is no surprise to see two of Europe’s top clubs competing for his signature.

The wideman’s low centre of gravity makes him a hugely dangerous dribbler, and he arguably possesses a slighter better eye for a pass than his Manchester City counterpart.

The 44-cap international is unproven outside La Liga, but it could be a really shrewd piece of business if Tottenham could pick him up.

Tottenham backed to sign £51m Piero Hincapie after double defensive injury woes

Description

Tottenham have earmarked Bayer Leverkusen’s Piero Hincapie as key target in the final two weeks of the transfer window.

The defender is a crucial figure for the Bundesliga side, having started 28 league games in their ultimately unsuccessful title defence last term.

Hincapie is now firmly on Tottenham’s radar, and they have been tipped to shell out £51.7million to trigger the releause clause that is part of the 23-year-old’s contract.

Thomas Frank’s side got their Premier League campaign off to an ideal start at the weekend, but there could still be further additions to the squad in the coming weeks.

This article includes exclusive comment from former Tottenham scout Bryan King.

MORE SPURS STORIES

Tottenham may not be able to convince Hincapie to sign

Tottenham’s pursuit of Hincapie has now been dealt a blow with the news that Leverkusen have no intention of selling him this summer.

The Ecuadorian is seen as a key part of their project moving forward, and as a result, they are hugely reluctant to allow him to leave.

That is certainly a setback for Spurs, who will likely now turn their attention towards trying to convince Hincapie himself to push for the move.

However, ex-Spurs scout Bryan King – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – believes that the Lilywhites would not be able to entice the defender, given the quality that they already have at the heart of their backline.

“The only reason Spurs would go for someone like that is because of the injury problems that they’ve had with (Micky) Van de Ven and (Cristian) Romero,” King said.

“Unless Tottenham feel that there’s a need for Hincapie, I can’t see really that it would be a major priority for them.

“If they want quality cover, how are they going to convince a player who costs £51m that he’ll get a regular first team place, when you’ve got two centre backs who are as good as he is?”

Spurs don’t need Hincapie

Tottenham have identified Hincapie as a key target, but there may be little point in them splashing out significant money on a player who they don’t really need.

The Ecuadorian would not provide a substantial upgrade on either of their starting centre halves in Van de Ven and Romero.

He would undoubtedly strenghten the depth options available to Frank, but then it poses the question of whether it is really necessary to spend such a sum on a player who wouldn’t start

Instead, it may be more prudent for the N17 outfit to use the money to strengthen at the other end of the pitch, where they are still chasing replacements for Son Heung-min and James Maddison.

Thomas Frank has transformed Tottenham since becoming head coach at Hotspur Way.

There is an order at Tottenham now which was lacking under Ange Postecoglou. This was first seen during pre-season.

Spurs’ 1-0 win against Arsenal was enough to get Tottenham fans on board. The defeat against PSG in the UEFA Super Cup final urged supporters to buy into what Frank is selling.

But it was Tottenham’s recent 3-0 win against Burnley which has convinced all at Hotspur Way to get behind the Dane.

Now it seems that the plans have been drawn and the players have been decided for the new season.

MORE SPURS STORIES

This article includes exclusive comments from Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham.

Richarlison tipped to be a ‘massive asset’ to Tottenham

Richarlison was expected to leave Tottenham by the end of the summer after a difficult couple of seasons in North London.

However, plans have since changed. The Brazilian stole the show in Spurs’ win against Burnley at the weekend. His scrumptious double fired the Lilywhites in front, while his partnership with Mohammed Kudus was thrust into the limelight.

Dominic Solanke was tipped to start over Richarlison against the Clarets. But Frank’s decision to pencil the 28-year-old into the starting eleven speaks volumes.

Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – believes Richarlison could become a valuable asset at Spurs if he remains fit.

“I’ve written off Richarlison multiple times,” Wenham said.

“I said he should be moved on this summer. I’m now seeing a new sign of Richarlison that makes me think if he can keep up whatever’s going on in terms of his play and his fitness to see the Richarlison we’re now seeing on the pitch.

“And if he can stay aside from injuries, he can be a massive asset to Tottenham this season and moving forward. because we saw it in the UEFA Europa League final when he played off the left, and we’ve seen it in preseason playing as the out-and-out striker.”

Can Richarlison maintain this form?

Richarlison’s recent form bears a striking similarity to his start to the 2023/24 season under Ange Postecoglou. The Brazilian netted 12 goals and provided four assists in 31 appearances for Spurs.

However, most of these goal contributions came before early February, and then a knee and hamstring injury saw him sidelined for various parts of the remaining matches. Post-recovery, he still struggled to get back to his previous form.

As such, there will be question marks on whether he can maintain this stellar form throughout the 2025/26 season. While Spurs supporters will be hoping he does, history dictates that most will walk away disappointed.

Description

Tottenham’s spending in this transfer window could hit club record levels, with several more deals targeted before the deadline.

Mohammed Kudus has joined from West Ham for a significant fee, while Eberechi Eze is now closing in on a move to Spurs.

Tottenham were also interested in Manchester City star Savinho, but a deal now appears to be off. Nevertheless, there could be more significant arrivals in the final weeks of the window.

This level of spending was unprecedented under Daniel Levy, but it now appears that Tottenham are benefiting from outside investment to facilitate these deals.

Levy spotted with Vivienne Lewis

Levy is the Executive Chairman of Tottenham, as a minority shareholder of ENIC, who is majority owned by Joe Lewis and his family trust.

MORE SPURS STORIES

While Lewis is rarely seen around Spurs nowadays, his daughter Vivienne is now taking a more active role, and this could lead to extra investment from ENIC.

The Telegraph have reported that Vivienne Lewis was spotted with Levy, as she sat next to the Chairman in Tottenham’s opening day victory over Burnley.

This has been described as “significant,” and it could point towards extra investment from the Lewis Family Trust and ENIC into the team.

Tottenham benefiting from extra investment

Extra investment into the team has been long overdue, but Spurs could now reap the rewards under Thomas Frank this season.

Kudus has already settled well, while Magnes Akilouche is being targeted as an alternative to Savinho.

Tottenham have also recruited Joao Palhinha, while captain Cristian Romero has signed a new contract, and there are promising signs over the squad building which could take shape by the end of the window.

If Vivienne Lewis is to take a more hands-on role than her father did, it could mean there is more ambitious investment into the club, but while Levy is in charge, Spurs fans will remain sceptical until more signings are through the door.

Mohammed Kudus needs to step aside as Tottenham look to bring a new star to town.

Kudus has excelled at Tottenham since signing from West Ham this summer.

Spurs supporters were shocked by Kudus’ stunning display against Burnley, and he was also positive in Tottenham’s defeat against Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup final.

But his reign that the top could come to an abrupt end as Daniel Levy looks to sign another star.

This article includes exclusive comments from Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham.

MORE SPURS STORIES

Eberechi Eze mooted to take Tottenham to the next level

Tottenham are back in the race for Eberechi Eze after midfielder James Maddison sustained an ACL injury against Newcastle United during pre-season.

The Lilywhites want a number 10, and the Englishman has been deemed sufficient. Hopes dwindled when Oliver Glasner issued a message before Crystal Palace faced Chelsea in the Premier League.

But Eze’s performance during Palace’s draw to Chelsea has since restored faith that a deal can be achieved.

While Tottenham missed out on Morgan Gibbs-White earlier this summer, Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – believes Eze is a huge upgrade.

“I think I’ve said this earlier in the summer with Jack Grealish and Marcus Rashford,” Wenham said.

“I have Eze above all of these players. Would have Eze above Mogan Gibbs-White as well. He’s a special, special talent that will elevate us significantly and will become the kind of poster boy of the club.

“I’d be very excited about him if we can pull that off.”

How does Eze compare to Maddison?

If Tottenham sign Eze this summer, he will be expected to slot into the space left behind by Maddison – but is he up to the task?

Going by the numbers, the two are pretty similar. Eze contributed to 14 goals and produced 11 assists in 43 matches for Place last season, while Maddison scored 12 and gave 11 assists in 45.

A deeper delve into their creative statistics in the Premier League last season reveals that the Palace midfielder created more chances than Spurs’ man and was also a greater dribbling threat. Eze’s crosses were more accurate, while Maddison trumped him on accurate long balls.

But all in all, both performed at a similar level throughout the season, even if the younger of the two excelled on several fronts. Therefore, Eze would be a suitable, or even upgrade to Maddison if he arrives this summer.

Tottenham may have done their best deal of the summer after what Frank has said about Romero - tottenhamhotspurnews.com
Description

Tottenham’s transfer window may have fallen below some fans’ expectations.

After appointing a new manager and qualifying for the Champions League, some supporters might have expected a procession of world-class players marching through the door.

It hasn’t been quite like that. Mohammed Kudus has arrived from West Ham and was superb on his debut.

Kevin Danso and Mathys Tel have made their loan moves permanent, while Palhinha has been signed on a season-long loan.

Still, the news announced on Monday regarding Cristian Romero is arguably their best bit of business of the summer.

MORE SPURS STORIES

Romero commits to Tottenham with new four-year contract

At one point, it seemed likely that Tottenham would sell Cristian Romero. Atletico Madrid were interested in signing him and Spurs were seemingly seeking replacements.

Nothing came of that interest, though, and Romero was given the captain’s armband for Tottenham’s first competitive fixtures.

Now, he has committed his long-term future to Spurs by signing a new four-year contract.

Romero has likely become one of the highest earners at Spurs, but it should prove to be worth every penny based on how he has previously performed in North London.

His leadership will prove to be particularly crucial moving forward.

Addressing this part of his game recently, Thomas Frank said: “There is a big respect for him from the players. Off the pitch as well, he also sets the standards.

“His aggression is phenomenal. He is fantastic in the duels. When he gives that to the team, he can transform the team and give energy to the team so I think that’s extremely important.”

Romero can become Tottenham legend

Romero was named the Player of the Tournament in the Europa League. He was arguably Tottenham’s best player by a country mile last season.

Ange Postecoglou blamed Tottenham’s particularly poor form in the middle of the season on a first-team injury crisis.

Romero was out for several months during that time, and it was him that Spurs missed more than any other player.

No matter how much money was offered for Romero, Tottenham would have struggled to buy anyone who could have as much of an influence on the team as he does.

Now, Tottenham can look forward to the World Cup winner continuing to have that positive influence for many years to come.

Romero has already made an impact on Tottenham’s history by helping them win the Europa League.

If he sees out his contract and Tottenham continue to progress, there’s no reason why he can’t be deemed a club legend in the future.
