Timo Werner is set for a return to the Premier League months after leaving Tottenham.

Werner left Tottenham after the completion of his second loan spell earlier this summer.

The winger never got to play under Spurs manager Thomas Frank, who arrived at Tottenham in June. But he did spend the period under Ange Postecoglou, who had mixed feelings about the German while in charge.

But with days until the summer window closes for another few months, he could be gearing up for a speedy return.

Leeds United interested in Timo Werner

While Werner was not cut out for another season in North London, he was in the sights of the recently promoted club.

According to the German publication Bild on Tuesday, 26 August, both Leeds United and Burnley held an interest. However, he has so far been unreceptive to any enquiries.

But with just under a week before the transfer window shuts shop for another summer, things could change. If they do, Spurs could be reunited with Werner at Elland Road in October. This time as foes, not friends.

Ange Postecoglou once hooked Timo Werner at half time

Postecoglou was the one who brought Werner to Tottenham but the winger was inconsistent with his performances.

The most memorable performance for Werner at Spurs was during their 1-1 draw against Rangers in the UEFA Europa League group stage.

Werner was hooked by Postecoglou after a subpar performance in the first half.

In quotes provided by BBC Sport on 12 December 2024, he said: “His performance in the first half wasn’t acceptable.

“We need everybody, including him, to be contributing because we don’t have the depth to leave people out if they perform poorly. I expect a level of performance from some of the senior guys, and tonight wasn’t that.”

The German’s time at Tottenham was spent in the infirmary, as a substitute or on the rare occasion as a starter.

The Rangers game is just one of the many disappointing performances from Werner, either as a starter or on the bench. While it could be odd seeing him in a Leeds shirt, it was the right time for him to leave North London.
