When Liverpool were suffering consecutive defeats to Manchester City, Nottingham Forest and PSV, you could not move for suggestions that they simply needed to go back to basics.

Well that is exactly what Arne Slot has done, and so it would probably be unfair to complain that his team are now a difficult watch as a result.

Across an unbeaten run that was stretched to six games here, the Reds have largely ensured that little has happened in either box, and that was the case again as the two sides mustered 1.16xG between them from open play.

They also won again to move level on points with Chelsea in the final Champions League spot, confirming that Slot has been successful in his bid to steady the ship.

Still, for all the positives, it is entirely fair to ask if this is going to be enough in the long term, or whether getting outplayed by nine-man Tottenham is acceptable.

It was perfectly in keeping with Alexander Isak‘s Liverpool career thus far that an important goal here was followed immediately by an injury that forced him from the field.

Since arriving this summer, the Swede has simply been unable to catch a break, and thus has failed to build any momentum as he looks to justify his price tag.

His goal here, a trademark dart in behind and smart finish, should have done wonders for the confidence of a player who is still trying to overcome the various fitness setbacks he has faced this season.

Instead, Isak is facing another stint on the sidelines as a result of a reckless Micky van de Ven challenge that surely should have been examined more closely.

Fortunately for Liverpool, if they are to be missing Isak for any length of time, they have another centre-forward who is perfectly capable of leading the line.

And that is Hugo Ekitike, who netted his eighth Premier League goal and 11th of the campaign so far to effectively seal the points.

That it saw the Frenchman bully one of the league’s most physical defenders was fitting given it underlined how quickly he has adapted to the demands of English football.

Ekitike is surely emerging as one of the signings of the season and, just like the team as a whole, is getting better week by week.

Perhaps there is little honour in being man of the match in a game of such low quality, but either way, Florian Wirtz was it.

Nobody created more chances than the German’s two, or completed more dribbles than his four, and he also took on two shots in constantly menacing the Spurs defence.

But his most significant takeaway from this match will surely be a first Premier League assist, registered in late December.

Anyone who has watched Wirtz of late will know this has been coming given his recent uptick in performances, and there hope is that it can spur him on to more.

How many more times can we talk about this issue before Liverpool make a decisive move to solve it?

Clearly, Slot’s side had not played well in this game, but they had done enough to bring themselves into the final 10 minutes of normal time with a chance of comfortably seeing out a hard-earned 2-0 victory.

Then, a complete inability to defend set-pieces reared its head once again and suddenly the last moments of the game turned into a desperate, backs-to-the-wall nightmare.

This was an 11th goal from such situations conceded this season, with only Bournemouth boasting a worse record on that front.

Liverpool were simply lucky that it did not cost them this time, but there is no doubt it will again before the campaign is out.

Once Spurs were down to 10 men, it was hoped that Alisson would have a quiet evening, instead he ended up saving the Reds at the end.

He did well to thwart danger when Randal Kolo Muani raced through, showing great composure, and he was reliable throughout.

Some great handling in the final minutes.

Conor Bradley – 6

Back in the team after suspension, Bradley made an important early block after getting himself in a mess, and did well to stop a Spurs counter-attack.

He was also frustrating on the ball, though, not keeping it in play a few times and failing to offer enough attacking quality.

Replaced at half-time.

Ibrahima Konate – 6

Konate did fine, barring one error that nearly allowed Kolo Muani in on goal, only for Alisson to save his blushes.

Made a vital block to deny Richarlison when Liverpool were rocking late on, but gave away a couple of needless free-kicks.

Virgil van Dijk – 6

Van Dijk hit the target with a header, but his biggest involvement in the first half was the awful tackle on him that saw Xavi Simons sent off.

Made one important headed clearance towards the end, but poor for Richarlison’s goal, air-kicking an attempted clearance.

Still not the Virg of old, in terms of being so faultless.

Milos Kerkez – 7

Kerkez continued his improved form in north London, with one block in the second half seeing the ball loop onto the crossbar.

Admittedly, he was more solid than spectacular, but that is what is needed from him at the moment, rather than an erratic presence.

Ryan Gravenberch – 6

Gravenberch was relatively quiet but kept things ticking over at the heart of the midfield.

He was too quiet as the game went on, especially given Liverpool’s numerical advantage, with more needed when the Reds lost control of the match.

Dominik Szoboszlai – 6

Another who has played better this season, Szoboszlai was still perfectly adequate, but lacked a spark throughout the opening 45 minutes.

Moved to right-back after Bradley came off at half-time, where he did well, but misses the Wolves game after picking up a fifth yellow card of the season.

Curtis Jones – 6

Jones was disappointing here, not hitting his recent heights.

So sloppy late on when he lost the ball, allowing Richarlison to race though, but Konate bailed him out.

Didn’t stamp his authority enough, despite the result.

Alexis Mac Allister – 6

Again deployed in a more attack-minded midfield role, Mac Allister was relatively unnoticeable, apart from when it came to winning free-kicks.

It isn’t necessarily working using him in this position, with only 46 touches far fewer than he would have deeper in midfield.

Florian Wirtz – 7 (Man of the Match)

After Simons’ red card, Wirtz seemed to come alive, finding pockets of space and being denied by Guglielmo Vicario.

He was great to watch in tight areas, so often producing one-touch class, and he got his first Premier League assist, deftly setting up Isak.

Best player on the pitch, but it must be stressed that it wasn’t exactly a high-quality affair!

Hugo Ekitike – 7

Ekitike was frustratingly quiet in the first half, but he received a complete lack of service.

He was far better after the break, finding himself involved in Alexander Isak‘s goal, before burying a brilliant header soon after.

Opened the scoring with a clinical finish but cruelly injured while finding the net.

Hopefully, he isn’t out for a while.

Assisted Ekitike’s goal with a deflected cross and looked lively on the right wing.

Replaced after losing his head late on, claiming he was elbowed by Richarlison.

Having steadied the ship, Slot knew victory over Spurs would be another massive step in the right direction.

Few could have any issues about his starting XI, given the unavailability and form of some, but the first half was a dull affair and Liverpool lacked creativity.

Up against 10 men, with Isak introduced, it was still a slow start after the break.

The game management at 2-1 against both ten and then nine men was woeful.

Slot will be feeling far happier about things after six unbeaten, but there is still a lot to work on.

Forwards Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike were on the scoresheet, but injuries, suspension and another fraught finale made it far from plain sailing.

One change as Bradley returns

Arne Slot made just one change to the Reds’ lineup that started last week vs. Brighton, with Conor Bradley replacing the injured Joe Gomez at right back.

Alexander Isak remained on what was an increasingly weak-looking subs bench. The Swede, though, would be introduced at half time.

Jeremie Frimpong returned to the squad after six weeks out.

Simons sent off in dull first half

It was a dull opening 45, with the main talking point being Xavi Simons’ red card for a foul on Virgil van Dijk just after the half hour.

The Reds had a host of corners but failed to make anything from – hardly a surprise from the team with the second-least goals from corners in the league so far this season.

It was 0-0 at the break, marking the 11th time in 17 league games Liverpool have failed to score in the first half this season.

Isak on, scores and injured

With a man advantage and Conor Bradley suffering another injury just before half time, Alexander Isak replaced the Northern Irishman with Dominik Szoboszlai dropping into right back.

It was a slow start to the half but after 10 minutes it was the two £100 million men who combined for the opening goal.

The increasingly influential Florian Wirtz slid in Isak and he finished clinically for his second league goal for the club.

In scoring, Isak was clattered by Micky van de Ven and subsequently had to be replaced by the returning Frimpong – the Dutchman operating on the right wing with Szoboszlai still at full back.

It was Frimpong who then assisted, via a deflection, for Ekitike to net his fifth goal in three games when he impressively headed home ten minutes later.

That second goal was needed, with Spurs having just hit the bar at the other end via a deflected shot.

A frantic finale as Reds struggle to hold on

But still, it should have been more comfortable than Liverpool made it – conceding in the 83rd minute when sub Richarlison finished after some messy defending.

The Brazilian then almost had a chance for a second soon after as Liverpool’s fragility once again came to the fore.

Szoboszlai picked up his fifth booking of the season, meaning he’s suspended vs. Wolves next week.

Frimpong got a cut on his lip from Richarlison and was replaced after losing his head. Nine minutes were added on as Liverpool looked shaky.

The frantic finale was added to by Cristian Romero then being dismissed for his second yellow card, putting Spurs down to nine men. Liverpool, though, continued to look a complete mess and struggled despite the two-man advantage.

Victory, but an already thin squad now looks set to be without Szoboszlai (suspended), Isak and Bradley (injured) for the next match.

Remarkably, the win marks six games unbeaten (all comps) and actually pushes the Reds up to fifth, level on points with fourth-place Chelsea.

Liverpool are at Tottenham in their final match before Christmas, and have the chance to record three successive wins for the first time since September. We’re live to bring you the latest.

After seven days without a game, the Reds head to north London, taking on a Spurs side struggling to impress under Thomas Frank.

For Liverpool, it is a case of trying to make it six games unbeaten in all competitions, and preferably pick up three precious points on the road pre-Christmas.

Here’s all you need to know ahead of the match.

Having made his comeback against Brighton, Mohamed Salah has now headed off to the Africa Cup of Nations duty with Egypt.

Whether the Liverpool legend has played his final game for the Reds remains to be seen, but Slot was insistent on the eve of this match that the rift is behind them after his return last weekend.

Nevertheless, we won’t see Salah for up to a month, with the final taking place on January 18, should Egypt reach it.

It’s now up to Liverpool’s attackers to show that there is life without him, with big-money signings Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak needing to step up.

Spurs and unpredictable belong in the same sentence throughout history, and they have been exactly that this season.

The hope was that Frank would make them a more organised team, but they sit 11th in the Premier League table and were beaten 3-0 at Nottingham Forest last Sunday.

There have been key losses to rivals, including a 4-1 thumping away to Arsenal, and pressure is growing on the manager.

For now, Frank’s job is not reportedly at risk, but that may change if Liverpool dispatch of them.

On top of Salah, Liverpool have plenty of injury problems, despite having a week without a game.

Joe Gomez is out after limping off in last weekend’s 2-0 win at home to Brighton, but there is positive news regarding Cody Gakpo, whose scan “looked promising,” but he remains unavailable this weekend.

Jeremie Frimpong is back in the squad, while Dominik Szoboszlai must prove his fitness in Friday’s training session to be in contention to start after suffering a knock to his ankle.

Giovanni Leoni and Wataru Endo are still missing, as are Stefan Bajcetic and Jayden Danns.

After a midweek break, there is no need for Slot to rotate, so the starting lineup should be similar to the one that beat Brighton.

Conor Bradley is back after a one-game ban, so he will replace the absent Gomez at right-back, with Milos Kerkez and Andy Robertson battling for a start at left-back.

Isak remains off the pace and is likely to be on the bench, especially with Hugo Ekitike scoring four goals in his last two Premier League appearances.

As mentioned, Spurs suffered a poor loss at Forest, so it will be interesting to see if Frank makes any changes.

Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven are a strong centre-back pairing who are likely to start, and they will provide a stern test for Ekitike.

Mohammed Kudus has arguably been Spurs’ best player this season and will pose a threat, as will Netherlands international Xavi Simons.

Dejan Kulusevski, James Maddison, Pape Matar Sarr, Destiny Udogie, Radu Dragusin and former Liverpool striker Dominic Solanke are all out for the hosts.

Meanwhile, Yves Bissouma is suspended for off-field issues and is also carrying an ankle injury.

Speaking in Friday’s pre-match press conference, Slot confirmed that he will not be creating distractions by discussing Salah during AFCON, feeling it is best for all parties:

“I said last week, actions speak louder than words. We moved on, he was in the squad and he was the first substitution I made.

“Now he’s at the AFCON, playing big games for himself and also for his country, so I think it’s fair to them that all the focus is, for him, over there.

“But definitely also for us, because we are going to play some very important games. There should not be any distractions from me saying anything about his time here at Liverpool, because as I said, we’ve moved on after the Leeds interview and he played against Brighton.

“Now he’s there, so it’s fair for the country and for him and also for us to talk, for us, about Tottenham and other games, and for them to be fully focused on their tournament.”

This is Liverpool’s eighth trip to the impressive Tottenham Hotspur Stadium – the seventh in the league – where they have experienced mixed fortunes.

Their first meeting there was decided by a Roberto Firmino goal in January 2020, in the title-winning season under Jurgen Klopp, winning 3-1 a year later.

A draw (2-2) and a win (2-1) came Liverpool’s way next, but Joel Matip‘s last-gasp own goal saw the nine-man Reds lose 2-1 heartbreakingly in September 2023.

Last season, Slot’s champions-in-waiting thrashed Spurs 6-3, before losing 1-0 in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final. One thing we do know, you can guarantee goals!

Ekitike is arguably Liverpool’s most in-form player and has been the most successful of their summer signings to date.

The Frenchman has scored seven goals in his first 10 Premier League starts, which is the same as Salah managed in his first 10 after joining from Roma in 2017.

Only Daniel Sturridge (eight) has more for Liverpool in that period, summing up the impact Ekitike has made.

Erling Haaland (17) and Igor Thiago (11) are also the only players with more Premier League goals than him this season.

John Brooks will referee Saturday’s match, in his first Liverpool game since last season’s Carabao Cup final defeat to Newcastle.

In fact, he hasn’t taken charge of any Premier League fixture involving the Reds since the 2-1 win at home to Chelsea in October 2024.

Brooks’ assistants on Saturday evening are Simon Bennett and James Mainwaring, with Anthony Taylor the fourth official.

Thomas Frank is a man under pressure at Tottenham, but which key battles do Liverpool need to win to get the better of his Spurs side this weekend?

The Reds have had a week without a game, which Arne Slot will have enjoyed, allowing for more time on the training ground and for injured players to return.

Next up is Saturday’s trip to Spurs, with the north Londoners not yet convincing under Frank, following his appointment from Brentford.

Ahead of the game, we spoke to Spurs fan Paul O’Keefe (@pokeefe1) to get the lowdown on the season to date, Frank’s future and the key battles this weekend.

How happy are you with Tottenham’s season so far?

I don’t believe any Spurs fan is particularly happy with the season so far.

The performances have largely been disappointing and lacklustre, so it has been a slog for the fans.

Is Thomas Frank the right man for the job?

Thomas Frank is clearly a pragmatic manager, with systems that rely on efficiency and consistency.

Spurs are a vortex of chaos, so good luck with that!

Overall, it’s too early to tell if he is the man to take them forward.

Which players have stood out most for Spurs?

Mohammed Kudus has shown glimpses of what he is capable of and has been one of the more impressive players this season.

Joao Palhinha has been excellent doing exactly what he does. He is an engine and an enforcer.

Spurs fans have been very critical of him not being creative or progressive enough, but for me, the issue is who partners him to get that creative balance required in any pairing.

Lucas Bergvall has impressed when given the opportunity this season. He is still young and will become even better.

He is 100mph in everything he does currently and needs to show the same enthusiasm, but at the right times. Otherwise, he can look careless.

It’s all about the coaching of an undeniable talent.

What’s the aim for the season now and how do you predict it will pan out?

The aim for Tottenham is always European football. The fans want everything (obviously) competitive in the Premier League and cup runs.

I expect Spurs to end up top eight this season.

What do you make of Liverpool’s season and would you stick with Arne Slot?

As an outsider, I was surprised Liverpool didn’t go the extra yard early and get Marc Guehi to the club.

The forward line was pretty set, and as good as he is, Alexander Isak was not a necessity in the end.

On Arne Slot, for any manager to walk into English football and take over from a club legend and then go and win the league in his first season is truly remarkable.

For me, that would buy Slot time, and to be calling for his head before Christmas after he’s just won the title is a little embarrassing to be honest.

Where do you think Liverpool will finish?

Third or fourth for me.

Where will the key battles take place?

I expect it to be quite a battle in the centre of midfield, so width will be the key.

Who can win the midfield battle and get it to the wide players to progress feels important.

Finally, what’s your prediction?

Spurs are only consistent at being inconsistent, so genuinely anything could happen!

But if we look at it rationally, Liverpool should pick up the win.

Fears that Dominik Szoboszlai picked up a serious injury against Brighton have been dismissed, with the Hungarian hoping to play for Liverpool against Tottenham.

Saturday saw Szoboszlai withdrawn in the 83rd minute during Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Brighton, due to an ankle injury sustained in the second half.

Thankfully, “a scan subsequently allayed fears that he could be facing an extended spell on the sidelines,” according to the Athletic.

Journalist James Pearce reports that Szoboszlai has since “responded well to treatment” and the 25-year-old “is hoping to be passed fit” to face Tottenham on Saturday evening.

However, it isn’t guaranteed that he will be available, with Liverpool “to monitor him closely before making a final decision on Friday.”

If he can’t play this weekend, Szoboszlai “will definitely be back” to play Wolves at Anfield seven days later, on December 27.

This will come as a relief to supporters and Liverpool coaching staff alike, who have watched Szoboszlai become one of the Reds’ most-heavily relied upon players.

This season, only two outfielders to have played more minutes for club and country in Europe’s top five leagues: Virgil van Dijk and Genoa’s Johan Vasquez.

Joe Gomez hamstring injury is “not serious”

There has been a positive update on Joe Gomez‘s recent hamstring injury, with the problem being deemed as “not serious” and “relatively minor.”

The 28-year-old was forced off in the first half at Anfield last Saturday, being replaced by Mohamed Salah in the 26th minute.

A hamstring issue was the cause and the Athletic report that the issue is being deemed as “relatively minor.”

He “is expected to miss the Tottenham game but the hamstring injury he picked up in the first half against Brighton is not serious,” wrote Pearce.

While “the damage is relatively minor,” Liverpool will still take “a cautious approach” to his recovery given his history of injuries.

Gomez had been doing a diligent job at right-back in the absence of Conor Bradley and Jeremie Frimpong, but he is now unlikely to feature until 2026.

Thomas Frank is under pressure to keep his job as Tottenham manager, with a new update emerging over his future ahead of Liverpool’s trip to north London.

Arne Slot‘s Reds head to Spurs on Saturday evening, looking to seal back-to-back Premier League wins in their last game before Christmas.

Frank has struggled at Spurs since arriving from Brentford, with his pragmatic style not endearing himself to the fans, and his side sit 11th in the table.

Despite this, reliable journalist David Ornstein has told NBC Sports that the 52-year-old is safe in the job for the time being.

“The word coming out of Tottenham Hotspur tonight is that they fully support Thomas Frank, and they are backing him,” Ornstein said.

“That the leadership at the club, of course, now it’s in a more full-on way, the Lewis family, after Daniel Levy was sacked in September, you could say this was a first sort of true test of their control of the club.

“And everything we’re hearing at the moment is that they are squarely behind Thomas Frank and that they want to see improvement in the team, and also, of course, results.

“Now it’s been a particularly difficult period for them, and there is concern in the fan base clearly.

“There are regular meetings taking place, and we’re told that within these meetings, of course, Thomas Frank and his position are discussed, but not in an abnormal way, and there’s no suggestion coming to us that he is under any immediate threat.”

Frank may seemingly not be under huge pressure, but a resounding defeat at home to Liverpool this weekend could change that.

The champions should be heading to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium confident after two wins in a row in all competitions, also playing Spurs at a good time.

They have won just one of their last five league games, losing three of them, including a 3-0 defeat at Nottingham Forest last Sunday.

If Liverpool can score early, as they did against Brighton, the home crowd could quickly turn on Frank, with patience wearing thin.

He is a manager whose Brentford teams troubled the Reds, though, and Slot’s men will know that a good performance will likely be needed to pick up a victory.
