Tottenham Hotspur will be keen to get back to winning ways after two defeats in a row in both the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup.

They were knocked out of the Carabao Cup, losing 4-0 to Liverpool, and then lost 2-1 to Aston Villa in the FA Cup leaving Ange Postecoglou’s only chance of silverware this season coming in the Europa League.

Spurs will play against one of Real Sociedad, Midtjylland, Galatasaray or AZ Alkmaar in the round of 16. They find themselves in the same bracket of the draw as United, their opponents this weekend.

The Red Devils won 2-1 against Leicester in their last match to keep their hopes of defending their FA Cup title alive under manager Ruben Amorim. Spurs and United faced each other twice this season with Tottenham winning both.

They won 3-0 in the Premier League at Old Trafford while Erik Ten Hag was still in charge, and then 4-3 in the Carabao Cup quarter-final.

Premier League pick referee for Tottenham vs Man United

The Premier League has appointed Peter Bankes to be the referee for the game on Sunday afternoon. He has taken charge of 19 games this season, showing 79 yellow cards and one red card.

Bankes was last seen in Arsenal’s 5-1 win against Manchester City, and is yet to officiate a Tottenham game this season. He has refereed for Man United on three occasions, United lost two of them to Bournemouth and Brighton, and won one against Leicester.

Eddie Smart and Nick Greenhalgh have been appointed as Bankes’ assistants. They both worked with Bankes during the 5-1 Arsenal win against Manchester City, in which just two yellow cards were handed out.

Both assistants have officiated in a Tottenham game this season, as they worked during their FA Cup trip to Tamworth in mid-January when Postecoglou’s side won 3-0 in extra time.

Michael Salisbury has been appointed as the fourth official, he has been a referee in seven games this season. Salisbury has shown 22 yellow cards and one red card. He worked as a fourth official for a Manchester United game this season, when they beat Arsenal in an FA Cup third-round tie.

Paul Tierney will be the VAR. According to a report by ESPN, Tierney made the joint-most errors whilst being the VAR last season, level with Stuart Atwell.

Tottenham could have several players return from injuries this weekend, which would come as a major boost to Ange Postecoglou, who remains under pressure.

They lost 2-1 to Aston Villa in their last match, a game which saw their exit from the FA Cup, after they were also knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Liverpool last week. They will now rely on the Europa League in order to get silverware this season.

Spurs will host Manchester United on Sunday for a battle between two sides who will feel as though they have underperformed. Postecoglou could have some key players returning to his squad for the game.

Brennan Johnson

Winger Johnson could make a return this weekend as he has been recovering from a calf injury. He is currently being assessed ahead of Sunday’s game and is expected to return within the next two games. If he is unavailable, Postecoglou might yet again choose youngster Mikey Moore to play on the wing.

Expected return date - Sunday 16 February vs Manchester United

Timo Werner

Also a possibility to return, striker Timo Werner has been recovering from a hamstring injury which he picked up in January.

He has struggled to stay fit this season, making 17 Premier League appearances, he is also yet to score in the league. There is a chance that he could be on the bench with Mathys Tel maybe getting his first start as a Tottenham player.

Expected return date - Sunday 16 February vs Manchester United

Guglielmo Vicario

The Tottenham keeper has been injured since their 4-0 win against Manchester City in late November, when he played over 60 minutes of the game with a fracture to his foot. Vicario could be back this weekend, but seeing as Postecoglou has a good backup in the form of Antonin Kinsky, he may not rush Vicario for the game against United.

Expected return date - Sunday 16 February vs Manchester United

Destiny Udogie

Wing-back Udogie could also return as he is on a similar injury timeline to Vicario, Johnson and Werner.

Postecoglou said at the start of February: “They are all kind of around the same time - around 10 days. We are talking about Vicario, (Brennan) Johnson, Destiny (Udogie), Wilson (Odobert), and Timo (Werner).”

He could make a return this weekend, although due to the impressive performances by Djed Spence, Udogie may not get back into the starting XI just yet.

Expected return date - Sunday 16 February vs Manchester United

Micky van de Ven

Van de Ven made his return during the Europa League game against Elfsborg, but was not yet ready for a full return to playing.

The Spurs centre-back is returning with caution due to Tottenham’s multiple injuries in defence. Postecoglou said: “Micky got through the [Europa League] game with no problem, but he feels he's not ready yet for the step up to the Premier League. And after losing Radu (Dragusin), I'm not going to risk these guys.”

Expected return date - Sunday 16 February vs Manchester United

James Maddison

Maddison could see a return this weekend against Man United, which would be a major boost to Postecoglou. He has been recovering from a calf injury, and is expected to be available for Spurs assuming all goes well in training this week for the midfielder.

Expected return date - Sunday 16 February vs Manchester United

Cristian Romero

The game on Sunday will come too soon for Romero, as he is on a week-to-week basis with a hamstring injury.

Romero looks set to return against Ipswich next weekend, but it remains unclear if this will be a certain move. Postecoglou said: “Romero is a bit of a tricky one. We are not really sure yet. There is still some work he needs to do. It’s just a slower healer, and it is one we are looking at on a week-to-week basis.”

Expected return date - Saturday 22 February vs Ipswich Town

Dominic Solanke

Striker Solanke won’t be rushed back now that Tottenham have Mathys Tel as cover up front. He has been dealing with a knee injury which was originally set to keep him out for six weeks.

The timeline looks the same as things stand is a week behind the likes of Maddison and Johnson, and looks to return against Ipswich much like Romero.

Expected return date - Saturday 22 February vs Ipswich Town

Wilson Odobert

Odobert looked very close to coming back this week before he suffered a setback in his recovery which is expected to keep him out until March, which is a blow for the winger, and for Spurs.

Expected return date - Sunday 9 March vs Bournemouth

Radu Dragusin

Dragusin suffered an ACL injury to his right knee during Tottenham’s 3-0 win against Elfsborg, when he came on as a substitute and then off again due to his injury.

He will miss the rest of the season for Tottenham, and it could be all the way until December before we see him on the pitch for Postecoglou again.

Expected return date - Next season

Richarlison

Striker Richarlison worked well to get back from an injury recently, but then suffered another during their game against Liverpool in what was a 4-0 defeat in the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg.

The Brazilian will likely be out for several weeks. Postecoglou said: “It’s disappointing for him. He was emotional last night because he’d worked really hard to get himself back, but again, it’s another setback that he’s going to have to deal with. We’ll hopefully get him back as soon as possible.”

Tottenham may be in a state of crisis heading into Sunday’s Premier League clash with Manchester United, but their opponents are not any better off. The Red Devils have also endured a disastrous season, currently 13th and just two points better off than Spurs.

United are on their second manager of the season, swapping Erik ten Hag for Ruben Amorim, but things haven’t got much better since the change, with the former Sporting CP boss struggling in his early days in charge.

Amorim has lost eight of his first 20 games in charge, stubbornly sticking to his three-at-the-back system and getting no real reward for it, at least not yet. That led Gary Neville to say: “I thought it would get better when Ruben Amorim came in, the enthusiasm of him and the new system, the players would buy into and we’d see a bounce, but we’ve seen the absolute opposite and it’s got a lot worse.

“They (United) are obviously going to stick with Amorim. But the more you lose, the more difficult it is for the manager to convince the players of his idea. It will depress the thoughts of the players to a point whereby they’ll start to lose faith in the idea and it’ll damage you.”

On the back of those comments, the Daily Mail have reported that some United players have met privately to discuss concerns over Amorim’s tactics. It’s reported that some players are concerned that the system is leading to a slide down the table and that it is not just a case of teething issues under Amorim.

The Red Devils showed plenty of symptoms of being dysfunctional under Ten Hag, and it appears it is not getting any better under Amorim, with back-channel discussions from player still reportedly taking place. That will be something Tottenham will take comfort from the discord at Old Trafford as they look to right their own results and ease the pressure on their own boss, Ange Postecoglou.

Tottenham Hotspur have shown interest in signing Fiorentina striker Moise Kean this summer to add firepower to Ange Postecoglou's struggling side.

Spurs brought in Mathys Tel at the end of January, working hard to ensure that a loan deal with Bayern Munich came with the option to buy. The London outfit can sign the 19-year-old for £45 million at the end of the current campaign.

The talented teenager prefers to play on the wing with Dominic Solanke still the only out-and-out central striker option for Postecoglou. Richarlison can play in that position too but has also historically been deployed on the flank.

Both the England and Brazil internationals have proven to be injury prone this season and are both currently nursing knocks. That has underlined a potential need for talisman recruitment during the next window.

Tottenham transfer interest pushes Fiorentina into contract talks

Solanke has done the business when fit, with 11 goals in all competitions, but has missed nine fixtures so far this season. Spurs paid £65 million to sign the player from AFC Bournemouth last summer.

A fresh report from Corriere dello Sport claims that Tottenham Hotspur are looking at a move for Kean. Arsenal are also keen and the transfer interest from the north London rivals is now claimed to be enough to have urged the Serie A outfit into contract negotiations with their striker.

The 24-year-old has 19 goals in all competitions this season in an impressive campaign and is currently the second top scorer in the Serie A. Kean would come to the top flight with Premier League experience, but his last efforts in the division were somewhat of a flop.

Everton signed the player for around £23 million in 2019 but Kean only ever scored four goals in 39 appearances for the side before loan spells at PSG and Juventus, eventually joining the Italian side permanently in 2023.

Kean endured ‘flop’ period at Everton

Kean has a £43 million release clause in his Fiorentina contract but would be somewhat of a risky signing for that fee given his struggles with the pace of the Premier League previously. The striker was once hauled off just 19 minutes after coming on for Everton in one disastrous moment and had also been left out of the squad for disciplinary reasons.

Speaking about the player in 2019, Ancelotti said: "He did really well last year [in Italy]. We were involved, when I was in Napoli, to try to buy him. He signed for Everton. I think he is a really good player with a lot of talent. He showed fantastic talent last year with Juventus, even if he didn't play a lot.

"But he is 19 years old and for every player that changes country, changes teams, they need adaptation. We have to wait and we have to work on him to improve his quality and be a better professional. But he has top quality."

In other news, Tottenham Hotspur could welcome back several first team players from injury against Manchester United this weekend.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou has decided to give first team players 'three or four' days off ahead of clashes with Manchester United and Ipswich Town, despite a recent rotten run of form for the north London outfit.

Spurs were dumped out of the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup in just a few days last week following defeats to Liverpool and Aston Villa. Postecoglou's side have won just two of their last eight top flight outings and languish 14th in the top flight. Spurs will look to bounce back against Manchester United at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday before making the trip to struggling Ipswich Town next weekend.

Despite the unconvincing performances against Liverpool and Aston Villa, Postecoglou has confirmed that first team stars will be given days away from training after a hectic fixture schedule. The club has been hit with an injury crisis this season, meaning that fully fit players have racked up the minutes and needed to work double time.

Postecoglou gives Spurs stars days off

Tottenham Hotspur don't have a midweek game since the turn of the year and Postecoglou confirmed that players would be allowed to recover as a result. He said: “I am just going to keep working like I have. We’ve got to give them some time off in the early part of the week.

“The boys who are coming back we have got an opportunity to give them a full week of training which is great. Come Tuesday, we should have three or four who have been missing. We can give them a full week of training rather than just throwing them in.

“By the time we get to the end of the week we will have something resembling a squad of players to prepare for a big game. That folds into the following week because again we have got seven days to prepare for the next game.

“That gives us a good opportunity to get some work into the guys who have been out for a while and give some rest of the guys who have been going at it. By the time we get back to Europe and midweek games, we will be in much better shape.”

Tottenham Hotspur hope for injury boost against Man Utd

Following that time to recover, Tottenham Hotspur are expected to welcome back several injured players for the meeting with Manchester United. A total of five first team stars could return to face the Red Devils.

Guglielmo Vicario, Destiny Udogie, James Maddison, Brennan Johnson and Timo Werner are all pushing for a return to full training this week and Postecoglou is confident that will provide a 'reset' for his beleaguered side.

Speaking after defeat to Aston Villa, Postecoglou said: "Two and a half months of asking 18-year-olds and 17-year-olds and senior players, with no rest, to play Thursday, Sunday, Thursday, Sunday, Thursday, Sunday, Thursday, Sunday.

"If you think that is not at all a factor of how this team is performing then there's nothing else I can say. There's nothing else I can explain."

Pressure continues to grow on Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou. They were beaten 2-1 by fellow Premier League side Aston Villa in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Sunday afternoon.

The London outfit also lost in the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Liverpool last Thursday night. It has been a tough week for them and they will hope their fortunes can change soon.

Spurs are sat in 14th place in the table as they look to rise up the league. They are back in action on Sunday with a home clash against Manchester United.

Manchester United injury news ahead of Tottenham Hotspur trip

Starting with the visitors, Manchester United have been dealt a blow with defender Lisandro Martinez is out with a long-term knee injury. His boss Ruben Amorim has said: “Licha is a difficult situation. He's going to be out for a while. We don't know the extent of the injury, but it's an injury that is going to take time.”

Left-back Luke Shaw continues to struggle with his fitness. He isn’t expected to be seen until the start of April which isn’t ideal.

Mason Mount is still in the treatment room and he hasn’t been able to get going since making the switch to Old Trafford from Chelsea. Amorim said at the end of December: “Several weeks. I don't know the exact date, but it's going to be for long. And that’s it, it's part of football, and you continue.”

Meanwhile, Jonny Evans isn’t available for the Red Devils either. It remains to be seen at this stage when the veteran defender will be fit again to play. His contract expires at the end of the season and he is due to become a free agent as things stand.

Tottenham Hotspur injury news ahead of Manchester United clash

Spurs are hoping to get a few players back this week. Postecoglou has said: “We were hoping to get a couple back for this last week and it didn’t happen. We could have risked a couple but with what’s ahead we went conservative on that. We'll get three, maybe four, players back this week, with the possibility of one or two others in the week or two after that. “

They will need to assess the fitness of Micky van de Ven, Brennan Johnson, Cristian Romero and Timo Werner. They have been unlucky on the selection front over recent times and could do with getting a few bodies back.

Destiny Udogie, Guglielmo Vicario and Dominic Solanke have been unavailable of late and the end of February is seen as the more realistic return time for the trio. In terms of more long-term absentees, they remain without Radu Dragusin and James Maddison.

Richarlison went off at Anfield last week against Liverpool. His head coach said: “It looks like his calf. It didn't look too good after the game. He was emotional last night because he’d worked really hard to get back. It’s another setback. We’re going to have to deal with him and get him back.”

Tottenham Hotspur were beaten 2-1 away at Aston Villa in the fourth round of the FA Cup over the weekend. Mathys Tel scored his first goal for the London outfit at Villa Park but the visitors weren’t able to find an equaliser in the end.

It was a tough past week for Ange Postecoglou’s side and pressure continues to mount on the former Celtic man. The club hierarchy have a decision to make about whether to stick with him or make a change.

Spurs are sat in 14th place in the Premier League. They have 14 fixtures left to play this season as they look to rise up the table over the coming weeks and months.

Tottenham Hotspur U18s score impressive goal

Spurs’ U18s scored a well-worked team goal against Brighton and Hove Albion during their 5-3 win over the weekend. Their official X account posted: “This flick from Tynan. It kick-started another sublime team move which was finished off by Luca for his second of the game.”

They kept possession and played their way out from the back before Luca Williams-Barnett finished off in style. The top flight outfit have a few youngsters to keep an eye out for in the future including Tynan Thompson.

Spurs’ kids are taught to play the passing out from the back style of football. Postecoglou has religiously stuck by it with the first-team over recent times, despite the fact it has caused problems.

The U18s are managed by Stuart Lewis and he has been in charge since taking over from Matt Taylor back in 2021. They are sat in 6th place in the league.

What now for Tottenham Hotspur?

Spurs are back in action on Sunday with a home clash against Manchester United. They are looking to return to winning ways and build some confidence.

Following their defeat at Aston Villa, Postecoglou said: “People can judge me. They can say I've done a bad job, I'm not up to it or whatever. That's fine. What I'm saying is you can't be critical of our players' performances at this time.

"If you want to measure anything on what they're doing at the moment, other than the extreme situation they're dealing with, then I think your analysis is skewed and it's not objective. If it's to get rid of me that's fine. Good on you. Go for it a million times. But in terms of this group of players, what they've given over the past two and a half months has been outstanding."

He added: “[It's been] Two and a half months of asking 17-year-olds, 18-year-olds and senior players with no rest to play Thursday and Sunday [every week]. If you think that is not at all a factor in how this team is performing, then there's nothing else I can say," said Postecoglou.

"I think this group of players, once we get the rest of the group in, will be an outstanding team. I have no doubt about that. Whether other people can see that is of no interest to me."

Tottenham Hotspur look to bounce back from a whimpering Carabao Cup showing against Liverpool on Thursday night with a response against Aston Villa in the FA Cup, or risk being knocked out of two tournaments in four days.

Ange Postecoglou's side had one foot in the Carabao Cup final when arriving at Anfield with a 1-0 advantage but looked leagues below their Premier League rivals under the lights on Merseyside. Arne Slot's men strolled to a 4-0 victory against the North London outfit.

Tottenham Hotspur have just a few days to prepare for their next challenge, a cup tie with Unai Emery's Aston Villa at Villa Park. Postecoglou is set to be without striker Richarlison, who picked up a calf injury against Liverpool, but Kevin Danso and Mathys Tel both made debuts in that match and are in line for more minutes.

FA confirms official Aston Villa v Tottenham Hotspur decision

The FA has confirmed the officials for the match at Villa Park. Referee Anthony Taylor will be in charge of the meeting between Spurs and the Villains.

Taylor is a familiar face having refereed 21 Premier League matches so far this season. His last work was in the Champions League last week, overseeing Atletico Madrid's 4-1 win at Salzburg.

The referee was in charge of the dramatic Spurs defeat to Chelsea in August, which the Blues won 4-3. Two penalty kicks and five yellow cards were shown in that goal-fest.

Aston Villa fans will also remember Taylor as the referee in charge of their 3-0 defeat to Newcastle United in December. The referee showed Jhon Duran a first half red card in that match.

The assistant referees will be Gary Beswick and Adam Nunn. The fourth official is Simon Hooper.

Ange Postecoglou confident of Spurs response

Speaking on Friday morning, Postecoglou was asked if he was confident of seeing a reaction against Aston Villa following a disappointing showing in the Liverpool defeat. He said: "Like I said, I have a great deal of belief in this group of players, and what they're going through, and how they're dealing with it. They were disappointed last night. We're all disappointed. But we'll learn from it. And we'll move on.

"People are on the TV and the radio and in the newspapers to give opinions and I respect that. They're allowed to do that, but I don’t have any obligation to listen to any of it. To get fuelled by the comments of people I’ve never even met, I don’t know how you live your life, but I certainly don't live my life that way.

"That's with all respect that they're there to give an opinion. It's not like I want to be successful here so I can go to these people and say to them, 'look, you were wrong'. I don't even know them. Why would I care where they think we're at?

"They're a million miles away from us, but they're allowed to have their opinion. We're an easy mark at the moment, and look after last night, there are times you've just got to take it, keep your council and atone for it in the way that only really matters and that is with playing the football I know we can."

Tottenham Hotspur defender Kevin Danso has admitted that it was a ‘stinging’ debut for the defender against Liverpool on Thursday night, but tried to take pride in his first appearance for the North London club.

The 26-year-old was snapped up by Spurs from Lens last weekend with Ange Postecoglou’s side beating Premier League rivals Wolves to the loan transfer. Danso had a medical lined up with the Midlands outfit before Tottenham Hotspur came to swoop in.

That was an important deal for the club given injuries to Micky Van de Ven and Cristian Romero with Danso ushered into the starting XI at the first opportunity for the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Liverpool last night. Spurs conceded four without reply as they went crashing out of the competition, despite having one foot already in Wembley Stadium for the final.

Tottenham Hotspur defender ‘proud’ to make debut

Danso partnered Ben Davies at centre-back with young Archie Gray and Djed Spence filling the full-back roles. It was another shaky showing from the Tottenham back line as the Reds cruised to victory thanks to goals from Cody Gakpo, Mohamed Salah, Dominik Szoboszlai and Virgil Van Dijk.

Taking to social media platform X on Friday morning, Danso wrote: “Yesterday marked my debut for @SpursOfficial in the @Carabao_Cup , and though we fell short against a strong side, I couldn’t be prouder to have worn this shirt for the first time.

“The loss stings, but I truly believe in this team and our journey ahead. I want to thank everyone at the club, and every single fan for the support! Onwards and upwards. COYS.”

Danso was given a 4/10 rating for his performance by LondonWorld. We wrote: “Not much better than Davies, who was screaming in frustration when the Lens loanee was nowhere to be seen for the Szoboszlai goal. A tough first outing for Spurs.”

Tottenham Hotspur have the obligation to make the loan move permanent this summer for a £21 million fee. The defender now has a couple of days to work with his new side before the FA Cup meeting with Aston Villa on Sunday. The visit of Manchester United follows next weekend in Premier League action.

Ange Postecoglou reviews Spurs debutants performance

Speaking after the tough defeat to Liverpool, Postecoglou backed Danso following his debut with words of affirmation for fellow debutant Mathys Tel too. The latter came off the bench in the first half to replace the injured Richarlison having completed a Deadline Day move from Bayern Munich.

Postecoglou said: "Yeah they did OK. Kevin was really positive, as was Maty. It's hard, you know, throwing guys in after their first trainings sessions, it's not ideal.

“That's part of our dilemma at the moment of trying to get some fluency and consistency but also knowing we have to keep tinkering with the starting line up to account for everything going on. But I thought they acquitted themselves well."

In other news, Tottenham Hotspur are facing yet another fresh injury blow ahead of meetings with Aston Villa and Manchester United as Postecoglou struggles to catch a break.

Tottenham Hotspur had salt rubbed into the wounds of a Carabao Cup semi-final hammering at the hands of Liverpool on Thursday night with Richarlison forced off in the first half with an injury.

The Reds put four past Spurs at Anfield, finishing on an aggregate score of 4-1 as the North London outfit went crashing out of the cup. Ange Postecoglou's side didn't manage a single shot on target in the 90 minutes, drawing criticism from pundits after full time.

Tottenham weren't helped by seeing striker Richarlison limping off the pitch just before half time. The Brazil international had barely been involved in the game, his most notable moment being a coming together with Virgil Van Dijk early doors.

Fresh injury blow for Tottenham Hotspur

Richarlison, who signed from Everton for £60 million in 2022, has missed a large chunk of the season with a hamstring injury but had scored two goals in his four Premier League appearances since returning to fitness. However, it wasn't to be for the former Everton man on his return to Anfield.

Postecoglou is relying on the striker with Dominic Solanke out until March with a knee injury. The forward arrived at Tottenham Hotspur from AFC Bournemouth for £65 million and had scored 11 goals before picking up the injury in training.

Speaking after the 3-2 win over Hoffenheim, Postecoglou said: "All the information now is kind of we're looking at around the six-week mark for him. No surgery but maybe we can get him back a little bit earlier, we'll just see how he progresses, but at this stage it's only around six weeks."

The Aussie boss did give Bayern Munich loanee Mathys Tel a debut as Richarlison came off, but the 19-year-old is more comfortable as a winger than through the middle. That could leave Postecoglou short of options once again for this weekend's FA Cup meeting with Aston Villa and the upcoming Premier League clash against Manchester United.

Having been knocked out of the Carabao Cup, the FA Cup and the Europa League are the last realistic remaining chance of silverware this term for the under-pressure Postecoglou. The Spurs manager will be desperate for a return from his side against the Villains and Red Devils, especially when it comes to hitting the target.

Jamie Redknapp slams Spurs showing

Speaking on Sky Sports after the game, pundit Jamie Redknapp said: "I can't get my head around not having one shot on target in a semi-final. The one half chance was when Son manufactured something and hit the bar, even then you thought the game was gone for them.

"When you come into a semi-final, and it's difficult when you arrive at Anfield 1-0 up with the pressure and the noise that goes with it, but I just felt first half they were trying to play out the back, the goalkeeper was edgy, they didn't show any courage to get on the ball and make things happen. They were so abject.

"It wasn't the inexperienced ones, it was the experienced ones I was looking at thinking, go on, lead the team. Son's your captain, show something, some character. Kulusevski, nothing."

In other news, this is how the Tottenham Hotspur players rated in that underwhelming defeat to Liverpool last night.
