Tottenham Hotspur centre-back Luka Vuskovic has caught the attention of fans and colleagues alike so far in pre-season as his career in north London gets off to a promising start.

The 18-year-old signed for Spurs in September 2023 when just 16 years old, with a £12 million fee agreed. However, the rising star continued his development with Hajduk Split before arriving at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this summer.

Given his young age, Vuskovic had been linked with an immediate loan exit to gain more experience but recent performances in pre-season friendlies have suggested that he could impact the first team sooner than expected.

Micky Van de Ven praises Luka Vuskovic

Standing at 6’ 4”, the centre-back has been an imposing presence and looked assured at the back, as well as dangerous up front. In his first Tottenham Hotspur outing, in the friendly against Reading, he picked up an assist and a goal during the 2-0 win.

Speaking ahead of the fixture against Arsenal on Thursday, Micky Van de Ven was asked about his fellow defender’s progress and heaped praise on the teenager. The Tottenham Hotspur star said: “Luka is only 18 years old but what you can see from how he behaves on the pitch and off the pitch you can see he is a really talented football player.

“He has a lot of qualities and I think he has shown in the last two friendlies that he has a lot of big and strong points where even our centre-backs can learn from. He's done unbelievable at this point and hopefully he can do way more for us and hopefully you can see way more from him.”

Tottenham Hotspur centre-back situation

It remains to be seen what role Vuskovic plays over the course of the 2025/26 season. Speaking about the player following that win over Reading, Spurs manager Thomas Frank said: “Luka deserves the praise as well. A great header. Showed his physicality and his composure on the ball. He’s not getting stressed when opponents get close. And what a strike.”

Vuskovic himself has said that everything is ‘perfect’ going into his first full season at Spurs and that he is ‘really happy’ at the club. The Daily Mail claims that several Bundesliga clubs are interested in taking the player on loan, should another campaign away from the Premier League be deemed the best option.

It remains to be seen whether Cristian Romero remains at the club amid interest from La Liga giants Atletico Madrid. Tottenham Hotspur have signed Kevin Danso on a permanent deal and continue to be linked with a move for Crystal Palace man Marc Guehi.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Thomas Frank remains in the market for a new defensive midfielder and his hunt for a recruit in that position appears to have drummed up a transfer saga.

The new Spurs manager isn’t short of options in his current squad with Yves Bissouma, Rodrigo Bentancur, Pape Matar Sarr, Lucas Bergvall and Archie Gray all capable in that position. However, there remains a feeling that the north London outfit lacks a certain bite that can only be solved with a new arrival.

In recent days, it’s looked increasingly likely that former Fulham man Joao Palhinha could be the answer to that. The 30-year-old moved to Bayern Munich for nearly £50 million last summer but has not dazzled in Germany.

Tottenham Hotspur prepare £45 million Bayern bid

As a result, it’s expected that the Bundesliga giants will allow Palhinha to leave this summer with a return to the Premier League likely. At first, a £25 million fee had been touted but the latest report from journalist Sebastian Vidal claims that Tottenham Hotspur are now willing to pay £45 million for the player.

That’s a staggering fee for a midfielder who has already passed the age of 30 years old, but it could work for Spurs. At his best, Palhinha was one of the top defensive midfielders in the Premier League while at Fulham, and capable of stopping any attack. Spurs need that.

Speaking about the player, former Fulham captain Tom Cairney said: "If you lose the ball, he smells blood. He’s probably one of the best I've ever seen off the ball, in terms of getting back, recovering and trying to win back the ball.

"He doesn't just put pressure on them, he goes back to win the ball and does the tackle. It's amazing to watch sometimes. I think the fans have taken to him. I think he's been a breath of fresh air in the Premier League."

Spurs transfer risks double embarrassment

If Palhinha was to hit that level every week, then £45 million is a steal. However, if he doesn’t, that’s an embarrassing amount of money to waste on a 30-year-old.

The worry for Spurs is that the midfielder is aware he’s had a tough season. Speaking at the Club World Cup, he was all too aware that he has not been at his best, which casts questions over that lofty fee. He said: “Obviously, it hasn’t been an easy year for me, but I’m also very motivated to – as soon as the season starts – prove my worth once again, at a very special club like Bayern, a huge club.

“I have a contract with Bayern for another three years, so I’ll report back on the 29 [July], which is when we start pre-season. Enjoying these vacation days with family and friends is the most important thing right now.”

Not only could Frank be embarrassed by that signing becoming a flop, but Tottenham Hotspur could also be shown up by being beaten to the transfer in the first place. Fulham reporter Jack Kelly has claimed that the Cottagers are also weighing up a move for the midfielder.

That transfer would likely be a loan and to see Palhinha choose Fulham over a big money move to Spurs would be embarrassing for Frank. Taking to social media platform X, Kelly wrote: “Fulham still retain an interest in re-signing Joao Palhinha. A loan looks likelier at this stage. One to watch.”

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Mikey Moore had been tipped to make a loan exit from the club in recent weeks and appears to have landed on his preferred destination.

The 17-year-old enjoyed a breakthrough season under Ange Postecoglou last season, making 21 first team appearances despite his young age. Moore scored his first goal for the club in a Europa League win over Elfsborg in January and had been part of Thomas Frank’s pre-season preparations this summer.

Despite his progress, Moore is not thought to be a priority in Frank’s plans for next season and still seen as a future first team star rather than a regular player as it stands. With that reasoning, the club is willing to sanction a loan move.

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder set for loan exit

Football League World had named Championship sides West Brom and Birmingham City as two prime candidates, while LondonWorld reasoned that Millwall could be an ideal destination for a season long loan. However, in a blow to all those second tier sides, it appears as if Moore is off to Scotland.

The Telegraph correspondent Matt Law wrote on social media platform X: “Rangers have emerged as favourites to sign Mikey Moore on loan from Tottenham. There's been a lot of interest, particularly from the Championship, but Rangers seen as most likely destination.”

Moore had featured in pre-season matches against Reading earlier this month and against Luton Town last weekend. LondonWorld rated the youngster an 8/10 for his 45 minutes against the Royals, writing: “Had a really nice moment early on when he cut in from the left and sprayed a pass into Brennan Johnson on the other flank, bringing about the first Spurs corner. Drifted out of the game after that but found some impetus again shortly before the break, almost curling one into the top corner from the edge of the box. It would be a shame to see him leave Spurs this summer, but a loan away could make sense given his potential.”

Mikey Moore tipped for big things

James Maddison heaped praise on Moore in October when speaking to TNT Sports following a 1-0 win over AZ Alkmaar, a match in which the teenager played 87 minutes. Maddison said: "I thought we had Neymar on the left wing! He is fearless, [he has] that young, fearless mentality. He's a brilliant lad, he has bags of ability. I will hopefully help him with wise words but he has all the ability and well done to him."

Postecoglou was keen not to put too much pressure on the rising star but was confident that the player’s feet are firmly on the ground. After that AZ Alkmaar game, the Aussie said: "I think we all understand with young players, you have to be careful but after the game, I don't get the sense that that's going to affect Mikey at all. There's no denying he was great last night. I thought he was great the whole game. It's exciting for us."

Tottenham Hotspur are looking for serious improvement in the Premier League next season after appointing Thomas Frank as Ange Postecoglous’s successor.

Postcoglou guided Spurs to their first trophy in 17 years and back into the Champions League with victory in the Europa League final against Manchester United but their rotten Premier League form and 17th-placed finish saw Daniel Levy swing the axe.

As the North London club compare to compete on all four fronts, Frank knows he will need to bolster his squad significantly to mount a challenge in both the Premier League and Champions League.

Kevin Danso, Luka Vuskovic, Mathys Tel, Kota Takai and Mohammed Kudus have so far signed for Spurs while Morgan Gibbs-White is also the subject of interest from North London. However, that deal is being held up due to Nottingham Forest being unhappy with Gibbs-White’s £60m release clause coming to light.

Now another midfield gem from within the Premier League is linked with a switch to Spurs.

Tottenham ‘make enquiry’ for Man Utd ace Kobbie Mainoo

Spurs have looked to add a Manchester United player to their squad and have made an enquiry to the Old Trafford club about Kobbie Mainoo, per a report from TBR Football. The North London club “appreciate” the United academy graduate and are keeping up-to-date with his contract situation.

Mainoo has committed to 2027 at Old Trafford but has been in talks over a new deal but no agreement as yet been reached. The parties are in a stalemate with Mainoo’s representatives demanding the player earn £180-a-week to reflect his status within the squad.

The midfielder is keen to remain at Old Trafford but Spurs are closely monitoring the situation and the longer the contract stalemate goes on, the stronger the possibility he leaves United. Mainoo struggled with injury last season and will want to ensure plenty of game-time as he eyes a spot in England’s World Cup squad for next summer’s tournament in Canada, United States and Mexico.

Gary Neville issues big Kobbie Mainoo praise

Speaking about Mainoo during his breakthrough 2023-24 campaign, Gary Neville said of Mainoo: "He’s a fantastic player. To come into Manchester United’s team at any time is really difficult and he’s come in at one of the most difficult times in the club’s recent history and he’s just stood out as someone whose temperament and composure is off the scale."

He added: "It looks like he’s got the world at his feet for the next 10 years.

"He’s got 15 years left, Kobbie Mainoo, and he’s got to keep his feet on the ground, but it looks like he’s got all the attributes that you would need to be a top player."

Tottenham Hotspur are eyeing a loan move for Bayern Munich midfielder Joao Palhinha this summer as Thomas Frank looks to add more bite into his midfield.

The former Brentford manager deployed Pape Matar Sarr, Rodrigo Bentancur, Yves Bissouma and Lucas Bergvall in the two defensive midfield roles during the pre-season friendly against Reading on Saturday afternoon. Spurs kept a clean sheet but there were misplaced passes and a lack of synergy in those important roles.

Palhinha has been touted as the ideal replacement given his availability at Bayern Munich and his Premier League experience. The 30-year-old spent two years with Fulham, making 68 top flight appearances and turning heads with his dominant performances.

Tottenham Hotspur eye loan move for former Fulham man

It’s not the first time that Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with Palhinha with a £25 million fee touted. However, The Mirror claims that Spurs will instead look to bring the player in on loan.

Palhinha only joined Bayern Munich last summer but has struggled to settle in Germany, with just nine starts last season. Speaking at the Club World Cup, he said: “Obviously, it hasn’t been an easy year for me, but I’m also very motivated to – as soon as the season starts – prove my worth once again, at a very special club like Bayern, a huge club.

“I have a contract with Bayern for another three years, so I’ll report back on the 29 [July], which is when we start pre-season. Enjoying these vacation days with family and friends is the most important thing right now.”

Palhinha ‘smells blood’ in centre midfield

Standing at 6’ 3”, Palhinha earned a reputation for always being in the right place at the right time to stop attackers and was one of the league’s most feared players.

Thomas Frank was appointed as Tottenham Hotspur’s successor to Ange Postecoglou last month and the Dane had his work cut out when he arrived in North London.

Spurs were riding the high of Europa League glory but bigger issues around the squad and its confidence lay beneath the surface. Frank was chosen as the right man to rectify this, having been known for his great man-management skills during his time at Brentford.

The playing squad also needed major surgery and that is what Frank has aimed to do. The club has so far brought in five permanent signings for a combined cost of £122million, with Mohammed Kudus the marquee purchase in a £55m move from London rivals West Ham United for nearly half the total summer spend.

The Ghana international may yet be eclipsed, though, with two £60m targets linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. A significant obstacle has reportedly arisen for one of the deals in question.

PSG set to submit improved offer for Illia Zabarnyi

It was reported on Monday that Tottenham are interested in Bournemouth centre-back Illia Zabarnyi, who shone at the back for the Cherries last season and may be available for transfer this summer at a hefty price tag of around £60m.

European champions PSG have been touted as the favourites to sign the Ukraine international throughout the summer window so far, but questions over the move arose due to a gap in valuation. Fresh reports by Fabrizio Romano on X state that the Parisians are ready to come back with an improved offer for the 22-year-old, which may put a dent in Spurs’ hopes of landing the defender as a possible replacement for Cristian Romero.

Romano continues that “no active talks” are going on with Tottenham, which backs up previous speculation that Zabarnyi only wants PSG and will only actively engage in discussions with the French champions while a move is still on the table. The transfer guru states that a “verbal agreement” between Zabarnyi and PSG was reached in June.

Zabarnyi is a ‘reliable’ player with a ‘great attitude’ - Iraola

Regardless of whether Zabarnyi ends up in the capital of France, of England or somewhere else entirely this summer, it is without doubt that any potential suitors will be getting a defender with the capabilities of going right to the top.

Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola said of Zabarnyi last season: “Zaba for me is easy to explain, I think. I'm not sure if we decided to change him one minute in the time I've been here. So that basically says everything about the confidence we have in him and how reliable and how robust also he is and he's the kind of player that is very easy to coach.

“For a coach, he pays attention, he comes every day to train with a great attitude and I am enjoying also his development because now when I arrived he was a great player but quite shy. He didn't talk a lot and now you see him managing everything from behind, shouting to the ones in front asking for the others and this is a show of how he's developing and he's becoming a more important player even for us. I love him personally and as a player.”

Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur have both faced a major task this summer as the two clubs look to push on from trophy success last season.

The Blues ended the 2024/25 season in the perfect fashion, picking up both the Conference League and the Club World Cup trophies as Enzo Maresca experienced international glory in a debut season which had already seen his side qualify for the Champions League.

For Spurs, winning the Europa League was even more profound - as the north London outfit ended a 17-year trophy drought by beating none other than Manchester United in the European final.

After such glory, the only way is forwards to avoid becoming complacent in the belief that equal success will follow. Both London giants have already secured major transfer targets in the summer window and may yet do battle for the signature of another top player, who has recently come on the radar of both clubs.

Chelsea and Tottenham interested in Alejandro Garnacho

One of the players to watch in the transfer window ever since his outburst against his own manager following the Europa League final, the future of Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho has yet to become any clearer and both Chelsea and Tottenham may look to profit from this.

Garnacho is a part of United’s infamous ‘bomb squad’ who head coach Ruben Amorim is desperate to sell this summer and as we get further into the window, United’s desperation is only increasing. According to reports by The Telegraph, Garnacho may be available for a cut-price £40million transfer, a far cry from the Red Devils’ reported initial valuation of around £60m-£70m. Chelsea, Spurs and Aston Villa are thought to be “monitoring the situation” of the 21-year-old.

The Telegraph’s report continues that Garnacho’s position at Old Trafford is becoming increasingly “untenable” and the club are under immense pressure to sell the Argentine along with Jadon Sancho, Antony and Tyrell Malacia. If one or two of the quartet are not sold on permanent deals, United may not be able to fund further improvements to the squad - and the report suggests that Garnacho may be the safest bet to get a sizeable transfer fee.

Where would Garnacho fit in at Chelsea or Spurs?

Both Chelsea and Spurs appear to already have a wealth of options to play out wide, but this could be a rare opportunity to sign a top talent from a Premier League rival for a relatively low price.

The eight-cap Argentina international only just turned 21 in early July, while it is worth noting that Garnacho’s exile from United seems to directly relate to a fall-out with the manager rather than any doubts over his quality or potential. The Red Devils’ board have stuck by Amorim strongly in their eagerness to dispose of a young player who was regarded as a major part of the club’s future just 12 months ago.

Following the sale of Noni Madueke, Chelsea could feel there is a spot for Garnacho to compete with Pedro Neto, Jamie Gittens and Estevao for a place out wide. While Spurs boast the likes of Son Heung-min, Brennan Johnson, Mohammed Kudus and Dejan Kulusevski competing for a starting role in new boss Thomas Frank’s side. Both clubs may feel Garnacho could bring something new to their squad and preventing their bitter London rival from completing his signing could just be the cherry on top.

Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United transfer target Yoane Wissa has quit the Brentford pre-season training camp in Portugal amid transfer talk that he may leave the west London outfit.

The BBC reports that the 28-year-old has returned to London from the Brentford camp and will hold talks with Bees director of football Phil Giles over a summer exit. Nottingham Forest are also said to be monitoring a move for the striker.

The DR Congo international is said to be of ‘firm interest’ to Forest, Spurs and the Magpies. All of those clubs can offer the player European football next season and that is thought to be hugely attractive to the bagsman.

Yoane Wissa leaves Brentford training camp

The BBC adds that efforts from Spurs and Newcastle United to sign the player have ‘intensified’ over the past 48 hours. A move to one of those Champions League sides is believed to be preferred by Wissa.

The former Lorient man signed for Brentford in 2021 for a reported £8.5 million, arriving on a four year contract. Wissa put pen to paper on an extension in March 2023 but that deal is set to expire in 12 months, which could force Brentford to sanction an exit now, rather than seeing the player walk away a free agent next year.

The BBC adds that Wissa is ‘unsettled’ by the transfer speculation over his future but is not necessarily against staying at the Gtech Community Stadium. Brentford have just seen fellow bagsman Bryan Mbeumo leave for Manchester United on a £65 million transfer and could push to keep Wissa at the club.

Thomas Frank big fan of Wissa

The striker scored 19 goals in 35 Premier League appearances last season and has now hit double figures in back-to-back seasons with 12 goals scored during the 2023/24 campaign. Tottenham Hotspur are believed to be in the market for attacking reinforcements.

Morgan Gibbs-White is a clear target but that deal continues to look complicated amid growing European interest in the Nottingham Forest man. Wissa can play out wide as well as through the middle and his versatility could be an asset should Son Heung-min leave Spurs this summer.

Wissa is a player that new manager Frank knows well thanks to their time at Brentford. Speaking about the striker, alongside Mbeumo, last season, Frank said: "That's an incredible achievement from the two of them. All praise due the two of them for the hard work, how much they push, and then of course to my staff, and then I think a little bit to the way we play."

Tottenham Hotspur are reported to have made first contact with the representatives of Atletico Madrid midfielder Conor Gallagher over a potential transfer back to the Premier League.

Spurs are in the market for midfield reinforcements having already added West Ham winger Mohammed Kudus to the squad for £55 million. Nottingham Forest star Morgan Gibbs-White is a prime target with the club’s interest very public, but that deal is bagged down by legal complications.

It now appears as if Thomas Frank is not putting all his eggs in a Gibbs-White sized basket amid fresh Tottenham Hotspur transfer links with a player who supporters will know well.

Tottenham Hotspur eye Conor Gallagher swoop

That is former Chelsea man Gallagher. TBR Football reports that ‘intermediaries have been touching base’ to see if the midfielder would be willing to move back to the Premier League. Atletico Madrid have enjoyed a busy summer window so far, which could tempt the player to seek a move and guarantee his game time elsewhere.

Transfer specialist Graeme Bailey believes that Frank is a big admirer of Gallagher, with the player also on the radar of Newcastle United. Spurs are said to have admired Gallagher before his move to Atletico Madrid last summer.

Bailey told TBR: “Gallagher at this point is happy at Madrid, very happy, he has thoroughly enjoyed working with Simeone and feels he made the right choice in moving. He does have the England situation in the back of his mind, I am told, and feelers have been put out by intermediaries to check on his potential options, but as said, ideally he stays put.”

A move for Gallagher may only come as a back-up should the swoop for Nottingham Forest man Gibbs-White fall through. However, the Spurs pursuit of the player may have been given fresh hope by Forest locking in on a potential replacement.

Morgan Gibbs-White saga takes new twist

The Mirror claim that James McAtee has become a transfer priority for Forest as they prepare for a Europa League campaign. Manchester City are said to value McAtee at £35 million, which would be a fee easily payable should Gibbs-White be cashed in on.

McAtee made 27 appearances for Manchester City last season, having impressed on loan at Sheffield United, but is a way off of a consistent place in the starting XI under Pep Guardiola. Just nine of those 27 outings saw him named in the starting XI.

Speaking back in April, Guardiola said: "I didn't allow him to play minutes so I cannot ask anything from the players who don't play a lot of minutes. They could do better? No. Macca has this quality, the ability to create.

"He is there. The game worked better against Palace, you create chances. Macca close to the box is quite similar to Phil. They are there, a sense. It's difficult to train, to make that movement because the ball is coming. If he plays minutes he will score.

"For the age, I'd like him to stay. But I understand the players want more minutes. I would like him to stay, he's a player for the academy, he knows the patterns. He's a lovely person and trained really good. He can play different positions but I don't know how the squad will be and we will see."

Thomas Frank’s first job as Tottenham Hotspur manager will be to add a sense of organisation after the chaos theory of Ange Postecoglu’s reign.

The Europa League trophy sits proudly in the club’s trophy room and with it a place in the Champions League despite the sort of season that would see most managers sacked long before the big Aussie eventually collected his P45.

Two new centre-halves have arrived in Luka Vuskovic and Kevin Danso, but it has been the big money arrival of Mohammed Kudus that has caught most attention and hit the headlines. Spurs’ forward line hasn’t been the same since Harry Kane left and a “Moneyball” approach could pay dividends with his goals being replaced from all over the attack.

Tottenham should make bargain swoop for outcast Federico Chiesa

As seen with Kudus and the failed attempt to sign Bryan Mbeumo, good players don’t come cheap and the Morgan Gibbs-White saga is one that Spurs will have to make a decision on. There is though, a bargain backup that Frank could take advantage of with an experience international cast aside by his Premier League club.

Since signing from Juventus for £10m, Federico Chiesa just hasn’t been able to get going at Liverpool and it looks like Arne Slot has made his mind up, as reported by Gazzetta dello Sport:

“Federico Chiesa, however, is not included in the list (of players heading on tour to the Asia), having already had a difficult season in the Premier League, prompting transfer rumours of a possible return to Italy.

“The Italian winger, despite scoring in the second friendly of the summer against Stoke City, is clearly not part of manager Slot's plans. His failure to be called up is therefore another piece of the puzzle that supports the possibility of the Italian striker's return, a move that Napoli had previously been interested in. “

Chiesa’s transfer fee gives Liverpool a lot of leeway in terms of selling the Italy international and it is unlikely that they would be hard to deal with in terms of negotiating a fee. The priority will be to get a player off the wage bill who is set to fall even further down the pecking order after the £82m signing of Hugo Ekitike.

Why has Chiesa been binned by Liverpool?

Chiesa’s issue at Liverpool hasn’t particularly been that Slot didn’t rate him, it’s that an early injury and the inability to get up to full match fitness due to the form of others saw him on the outside looking in, as explained by the Reds’ boss:

“In terms of the quality he has he would deserve more playing time at this football club or the club he is playing for as he has the quality to play for us," Slot said .

"But unfortunately for him he is in competition with Mo Salah when it is about the right wing but I think he can also play as a left-winger, but he has Cody Gakpo and Lucho Diaz.

"I don't think I am wrong if I tell you these three have had a great season and for him starting one or two or maybe three-nil down because the moment he came in he was, by a long time, not as fit as the other payers were and that doesn't help in the beginning.

"The other ones did so well there was not a lot of reason for me to change and then being in the squad becomes difficult.”

Chiesa would bring experience to a young Spurs team as well as the ability to play on either flank or through the middle. With depth and more goals needed, he could be the perfect solution without breaking the bank. Reports back in May indicated Spurs were interested in the player, and the deal now looks there to be done.
