Pape Matar Sarr is still at AFCON after Senegal reached the final, but Yves Bissouma is back, although he is yet to feature under Frank this season. Dejan Kulusevski and James Maddison remain long-term absentees with knee injuries. New signing Conor Gallagher could make his debut.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference, Frank shared an update on his squad ahead of the game.

"Unfortunately, Richarlison has a hamstring injury that will keep him out for up to seven weeks.

"Lucas [Bergvall] could be available - is probably available - for Saturday. "Bissouma is back, so he’s available as well. Destiny [Udogie] and Dominic [Solanke] are close to finishing a good week's training, both are available, both look good and both are closer to playing more minutes."

According to Teixeira, the money brought in from Spurs for Souza will be used to balance the books, settle debts and try and avoid any further sanctions from FIFA.

The most important of those is regarding Joao Basso, with Portuguese club Arouca filing a lawsuit with FIFA about a €2.6m missing payment.

He said, via ESPN Brazil:

The effort is always the same to balance the debts. We have already paid R$ 130 million in transfer bans in 2024, and others were avoided through agreements. Arouca didn't even agree to talk to Santos, who even sent a representative to Portugal," he reported.

Why Souza Deal has Taken Longer Than Gallagher

Tottenham actually agreed a deal to sign Souza before negotiations started with Atletico for Gallagher, so why has it taken longer to happen?

The first reason is that once an agreement has been reached between the two clubs, a medical then needs to be organised for a player who is travelling from Brazil.

Semenyo, meanwhile, has made an early impression at his new club, netting for City in their back-to-back wins over Exeter City and Newcastle in cup competitions.

The Athletic deputy news editor said: "I don't see a future for [Thomas] Frank at Spurs, to be honest with you.

"He hasn't really shown anything since the Manchester City game early in the season - when they won 2-0 at the Etihad - to impress me and suggest that he's able to scale up and be a Tottenham manager.

"Perhaps that's a bit harsh. Obviously, he did some really good work at Brentford. The list of players he has transformed there is a long one, and some of the names we are all familiar with - Mbeumo, Wissa, Ollie Watkins.

"Look, he's obviously got something about him, but you know, so far at Spurs, the football has been nearly unwatchable. Honestly, it's been that bad at times. So I think if this is to work for Frank and Spurs, he needs to change. He needs to be more proactive."

Kilpatrick has a point. Tottenham have only won seven games from 21 in the Premier League this season, though five of those came in the first nine. Two wins in 12 is not good enough for one of the 'Big Six' clubs in the division.

Maghnes Akliouche to Tottenham is 'One to Keep an Eye On'

Speaking on GIVEMESPORT's 'Market Madness' podcast, journalist Sessions stated that if any winger was to come in, Akliouche would be their top target - although Tottenham would only pay a maximum of around £43million to land the 'insane' France international, as opposed to the £60million that Monaco desire. Sessions said:

"I think, probably the one that I feel like it's going to happen this window or maybe in the summer, it feels like Maghnes Akliouche actually is one to keep an eye on.

"Spurs were interested in the summer. I mean, Monaco kind of expected him to be sold in the summer. €70million (£60.7million) price tag, I think, put a few clubs off.

"And because they couldn't sell, they actually sort of struggle to reinvest and boost their squad like they'd hoped. But I think Monaco are ready that he is going to be leaving at some point.

"And although he's not a left midfielder, he's somebody that can play on the right, is left-footed, can come inside and play in the 10 as well as the left.

"He feels like, if Spurs are going to sign anyone this month, that they're probably going to be looking at someone like that.

"[Akliouche] is a really good player, but he's not going to be €70million. I think his price is going more close to €50million (£43.3million), which is generally where Spurs are doing their business - even though there has been a change and Daniel Levy has left.

"I don't think you're going to see Spurs spending £70-80million just yet, especially not in January. But I feel like if they're going to sign anyone this window, and they're going to be a wide player, it's probably going to be Maghnes Akliouche."

However, the likes of Bryan Gil, Arnaut Danjuma, Manor Solomon, Timo Werner, Ryan Sessegnon and Brennan Johnson have all departed the club without completely stamping their mark at the club, and the jury is still out on Wilson Odobert, Mohammed Kudus and Mathys Tel.

It's been an area that Spurs have largely struggled in recent years, ever since the days of Son and Lucas Moura, and they will be hoping that Akliouche can change that if he is the chosen man to come into their ranks.

Boro believe that they are unlikely to see a club match their valuation in the current window, and they are reluctant to sell him in the January market. If they fail to achieve promotion, then Hackney could become more attainable.

Hackney would offer Spurs something different in midfield, especially in comparison to Gallagher. The Middlesbrough man is more of a progressive player who loves to drive with the ball and play forward, whereas Gallagher is known for his defensive work rate and winning the ball back from the opposition.

Hackney's a Different Profile to Gallagher

As mentioned, Hackney would offer something different from Gallagher, which is why a move for the former would make sense alongside the latter. Scouted Ftbl described Hackney as being 'on another planet' in terms of progressing the ball, whereas Gallagher is a midfielder more likely to help out with the defensive side of the game.

If both players arrive through the door, then Thomas Frank will have a difficult task fitting them in alongside his current options. Rodrigo Bentancur is currently on the sidelines for an extended period due to injury, but Spurs still have the likes of Archie Gray, Joao Palhinha, and Lucas Bergvall as options in the middle of the park.

Aston Villa, with the shadow of Profit & Sustainability Rules and Squad Cost Ratio hanging over them, were inclined to do a loan deal, with an option to buy at the end of it - much like they had with Harvey Elliott - a deal that has not gone well with the Liverpool loanee told he will not play for Emery's side again this season and thus the £35million buy obligation will not come into force.

Tottenham were prepared to pay the €40million (£35million) asking price for a permanent signing, which was accepted, with Gallagher agreeing personal terms and passing a medical swiftly.

From the player's side, Gallagher was always keen to return to the Premier League, having been let go by Chelsea and may return with something of a point to prove to his boyhood club, now with their fierce rivals.

With Villa third in the Premier League and more likely than Spurs (14th) to qualify for the UEFA Champions League next season, there needed to be another selling point for Gallagher too.

Villa have a settled side and are out-performing expectations under Emery this season. On the flip side, Tottenham have struggled and Frank needs organisation and control in his midfield. That's where Gallagher comes in and the fact that he is more likely to get guaranteed starts at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium than at Villa Park will also have played a part in his decision.
