Description

Tottenham Hotspur are still adjusting to life without long-serving icon Heung-min Son, but Yang Min-hyeok is showing signs he could one day fill that void.

Tottenham Hotspur are still trying to adapt to the absence of long-time serving club legend Heung-min Son, who departed this summer after lifting a piece of silverware for the club.

Son is without question irreplaceable and remains a huge miss for Tottenham, but there is quiet optimism that fellow youngster Yang Min-hyeok can rise through the ranks and eventually pick up from where the former captain left off.

The young talent, however, must first learn his trade away from Hotspur Way, and he appears to be putting the right building blocks in place during his loan spell.

Tottenham’s Yang Min-hyeok grabs first assist for Portsmouth

Yang Min-hyeok is currently on loan with Portsmouth this season, having secured a move to the Championship side in search of regular first-team football and valuable experience.

The teenager has already netted two goals in five league fixtures and has now added a fine assist to his growing goal involvement tally.

Portsmouth, who sit 14th in the table, faced Leicester City, who occupy fourth place, and managed to secure a 1-1 draw after initially going behind.

MORE SPURS STORIES

Yang was the orchestrator of Portsmouth’s equaliser, with the Korean winger driving through midfield, gliding past his marker with sharp footwork before laying the ball off to John Swift, who finished superbly to bring the game level.

Yang Min-hyeok’s performance breakdown for Portsmouth

Yang Min-hyeok’s display against Leicester was both lively and efficient, as he capped his performance with a lovely assist and several promising contributions throughout the contest.

He hit the woodwork once from his only shot in the match, ending with a 7.7 rating – the joint-highest of any player on the pitch.

The Tottenham winger completed 20 of his 22 passes (91%), created one clear chance, and made three notable defensive contributions while maintaining strong involvement in both halves of the pitch.

Across 39 total touches, he registered four touches in the opposition box, five recoveries, and two tackles, while winning five of his eleven ground duels (45%) and one of his aerial duels (100%).

Description

Tottenham Hotspur have been keen to hand several of their brightest prospects valuable first-team experience this season, but one of their youngsters now looks set for a frustrating spell on the sidelines.

Tottenham Hotspur sent out several fringe players on loan this summer to help them gain crucial minutes at the senior level and prepare for potential roles in the first team.

George Abbott is one such player, currently on loan with Wycombe Wanderers, where he has made 14 appearances so far, including his latest outing in their 1-0 win over Wigan Athletic on 11 October.

However, the promising midfielder has now suffered an untimely setback while on duty with Wycombe, one that will significantly affect his playing time over the coming months.

Wycombe boss Michael Duff confirms injury to Tottenham’s George Abbott

Wycombe Wanderers manager Michael Duff has confirmed that Tottenham loanee George Abbott will face an extended period out of action after sustaining a serious injury.

Speaking to BBC Sport, Duff revealed that the youngster had been struggling with an issue before scans confirmed the extent of the problem.

The Wycombe boss explained that Abbott is now set for a lengthy layoff and could even require surgery.

MORE SPURS STORIES

“George felt something in his quad in the week. It is not good news, he is looking at four months and probably some sort of surgery,” Duff said.

“He had a scan a couple of weeks ago because he has been feeling something but that showed there was nothing. It is a real blow for him and it is a blow for us because he is a good player.”

Blow for Abbott and Wycombe as Spurs loanee faces long recovery

It is undoubtedly a major setback for Abbott, who could end up missing the remainder of the season, though his focus will now be on returning fully fit and stronger than before.

The 20-year-old has found the back of the net once this season, and his influence in Wycombe’s midfield has been clear, having featured in ten of their 13 league matches when fit.

The Chairboys currently sit 17th in League One and will now need to find solutions without the Tottenham man, whose energy and work rate have been vital to their midfield balance.

Tottenham 1-2 Aston Villa Match Report as Thomas Frank’s home fortress lacks foundations - Spurs Web
Description

Tottenham Hotspur suffered yet another defeat at home in the Premier League as Aston Villa stunned them with two brilliant goals after an early opener.

Tottenham Hotspur fans would’ve been quite happy to finally watch their team play again after the two-week international break, but had they known what kind of football they were about to witness, they would probably have wished the break went on for a few more weeks.

Even before the afternoon turned sour, it had already started badly. Destiny Udogie wasn’t in the matchday squad for what Thomas Frank described as a “minor irritation”, and Cristian Romero was pulled out of the starting eleven just minutes before kick-off after picking up an injury during the warm-up, forcing Kevin Danso to start in his place.

First half: Tottenham 1-0 Aston Villa

It took Tottenham less than five minutes to open the scoring. Mohammed Kudus whipped in a dangerous cross to the back post, where Joao Palhinha headed it across goal, and Rodrigo Bentancur was on hand to smash it in from close range.

Barely two minutes later, Spurs thought they had doubled their lead when Kudus finished smartly from a tight angle after being released by a long ball from Micky van de Ven, but the flag was up for offside.

Aston Villa struggled to pass Tottenham’s very physical midfield, with Palhinha everywhere and Xavi Simons surprisingly involved defensively, even going on to register the most defensive actions of any player before the break.

But all it took was one lapse for Villa to punish them. No one in a Spurs shirt wanted to close down Morgan Rogers on the edge of the box, and the Villa midfielder made full use of the space, curling a dipping effort past Guglielmo Vicario to level the score.

MORE SPURS STORIES

Tottenham should have restored their lead before half-time, but Mathys Tel failed to tap into an open net after Kudus sent in a brilliant low cross. Both sides went into the interval level at one apiece.

Second half: Tottenham 0-1 Aston Villa

Many Spurs fans expected changes at the break after sloppy displays from Wilson Odobert and Tel, but Thomas Frank stuck with his starting eleven.

At first, it looked like he might have been right as Spurs started the second half with a bit more energy, creating a flurry of half-chances.

Kevin Danso’s long throw caused chaos in the Villa box, and Odobert’s shot was blocked by Ezri Konsa, before Emiliano Martinez produced an acobatic save to deny Palhinha’s long-range strike seconds later.

But the momentum didn’t last long. Villa began to find their rhythm again, with Donyell Malen hitting the side netting before the visitors finally took the lead through a slick move.

A long pass from Matty Cash found Lucas Digne on the flank. The Frenchman’s first touch was excellent, and he squared the ball for Emiliano Buendia, who cut inside and guided a low finish into the far corner beyond an idle Vicario.

FT: TOTTENHAM 1-2 ASTON VILLA.

Spurs Web man of the match: Joao Palhinha

What’s next for Spurs?

Tottenham have now won just three of their last 18 Premier League matches at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, a run that feels somewhat unfair on the home crowd.

The midfield pair of Palhinha and Bentancur were solid defensively, but both struggled to create anything going forward. Simons had to drop deep to help, which meant Spurs lacked someone to link play in attack.

It’s worth remembering that this is only Thomas Frank’s second defeat in twelve matches in charge, but performances like this will test the patience of the fans.

Description

Thomas Frank has now shared a fitness update on Cristian Romero after the Aston Villa defeat at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Tottenham Hotspur suffered their second defeat of the Premier League season in their recent outing against Aston Villa at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

That defeat saw Frank’s men miss the chance to climb into second in the Premier League table, as they now sit in sixth place, behind top four rivals, Chelsea, Manchester City and Arsenal.

It was a rather painful loss for the Dane, who watched his side fail to capitalise on taking an early lead through Rodrigo Bentancur’s strike, only for Villa to stage a comeback and win 2-1.

A defeat, however, is not the only thing on the manager’s mind, with Frank also having to deal with the absence of his skipper, Cristian Romero.

Romero was set to feature from the start, having made an early return from international duty earlier in the week, but he picked up a knock during the warm-up, with Kevin Danso replacing him as a result.

Thomas Frank has now provided an update on the fitness of the defender, revealing that he does not expect it to be anything big.

MORE SPURS STORIES

Speaking to Sky Sports, the Spurs boss said: “Minor abductor injury. He felt a little bit the past few days. We expected him to be fine but he wasn’t. I don’t expect it to be anything too big.”

Spurs focus shifts to European action after Premier League setback

Spurs will now turn their attention to European matters following their latest defeat in the Premier League.

Up next is a trip to France, where Tottenham will take on Monaco in matchday three of the league phase of the UEFA Champions League.

Tottenham remain unbeaten in Europe, having secured a victory on matchday one and a draw against Glimt last time out, and Frank will be hoping his side can bounce back with a win on Wednesday night.

Five things we learned from Tottenham Hotspur’s 2-1 defeat against Aston Villa

Five things we learned from Tottenham Hotspur’s 2-1 defeat against Aston Villa - Spurs Web
Description

Tottenham suffered their second defeat of the 2025/26 Premier League season under Thomas Frank at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, following Aston Villa’s latest 2-1 win.

Let’s take a look at the five things we learned from Tottenham’s defeat against Aston Villa:

Awful home form

Tottenham Hotspur would no doubt have been hoping to follow up their win against Leeds United before the international break with another victory on Sunday afternoon.

However, it was not to be for Thomas Frank’s men, who suffered their second defeat of the season and missed the chance to go second in the Premier League table.

Two defeats, both coming on home soil, mean that Frank has picked up just one victory at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, compounding their home woes even further.

It is a run that stretches back to last season, where they managed just six league wins at home.

Frank made it clear that improving Spurs’ home performances was something he was actively working on, but despite taking an early lead in front of their home crowd, Tottenham failed to show any further quality in front of goal.

MORE SPURS STORIES

At the moment, only three sides have a worse home record than Tottenham, with Nottingham Forest, Wolves, and West Ham the only teams performing worse. For a side with ambitions of making it into Europe, something has to change.

Tottenham missed Cristian Romero and Destiny Udogie

Spurs did welcome back a few of their injured players, with Randal Kolo Muani making a return, but a few others remained sidelined.

Destiny Udogie missed the encounter, with Frank revealing that it was a minor issue, while Cristian Romero picked up a knock in the warm-up.

Of course, these players were big misses, especially Romero, who could have brought much-needed order to the defensive line.

There was little pressure or urgency from most of the Spurs players on the pitch, who often allowed Villa to let fly from range, which proved costly.

Romero is aggressive and front-footed, never afraid to put pressure on his man, and that could have come in handy.

Meanwhile, Udogie could have offered some attacking threat on the left, with his running and ability to deliver first-time crosses into the box.

Huge gap between midfield and forward line

While Tottenham are certainly making progress in some areas, there are still aspects of their game that need sharpening.

The midfield could definitely do with some improvement, as today’s game exposed the glaring gap between the midfield and the forward line.

We often saw Frank looking to build with a back three, with Rodrigo Bentancur dropping in to help form that shape, which often left space and created a disconnect between the centre and the forwards.

Building with a back three is not entirely new, but when Bentancur is dropping deep and Joao Palhinha plays as the more advanced of the pivot, chance creation becomes difficult, especially as Palhinha is not a natural playmaker.

Xavi Simons, Wilson Odobert and Mathys Tel struggled

A lot of the Tottenham players were poor, but it is fair to say that Xavi Simons, Wilson Odobert and Mathys Tel were among the worst on the pitch.

Tel and Odobert came into the fixture brimming with confidence following their recent exploits on international duty.

However, delivering consistently for Tottenham on a bigger stage is where these players tend to struggle, and that was once more on display today.

Odobert looked lively and direct, trying different things, but with no end product. Tel pressed well and worked hard, yet also failed to deliver any meaningful contribution. At this level, that final touch often decides games, and Spurs are lacking that in attack.

Simons, too, is yet to show his quality for Tottenham, whether off the left or through the middle. Today’s fixture saw him create just one chance, and as Tottenham’s number ten, that simply is not good enough.

Thomas Frank waited too long to make changes

Tottenham do have some depth in their squad, and today’s match showed that, with the likes of Brennan Johnson, Lucas Bergvall, Randal Kolo Muani and Pape Matar Sarr all on the bench.

However, Frank did not turn to his bench early enough when it was clear that the players on the pitch were not performing to the required level.

Spurs’ first change came in the 60th minute with Richarlison replacing Tel, but no other substitution was made until the 79th minute, after Villa had taken the lead.

Bergvall and Kolo Muani were seen waiting on the touchline for almost ten minutes before finally coming on. Questions also have to be asked as to why Bergvall or Sarr were not introduced at half-time or earlier in the second half.

At 1-1, the mindset simply needed to be to win the game, and with the way it was going, it was clear that those on the pitch were not ready to change the outcome.

Tottenham player ratings from 1-2 defeat vs Aston Villa as 4/10 star once again struggles - Spurs Web
Description

The full-time whistle has blown between Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa in the Premier League, and the player ratings are in.

Below, we have given each Tottenham player a performance rating on a scale of 0-10, with 10 highest score achievable for an impressive performance.

Tottenham had an afternoon to forget after suffering another home defeat, despite Rodrigo Bentancur giving Spurs an early lead.

It proved not to be enough with Villa scoring two impressive goals to foil Spurs from moving up to second in the Premier League table.

How the Tottenham players rated vs Aston Villa

Guglielmo Vicario – Beaten convincingly from range for both goals. Rogers’ dipping strike proved too difficult to handle, and Buendia’s precise long-range effort also found its way past him. A frustrating afternoon for the Italian. 5.

Pedro Porro – Solid defensively for much of the contest and composed on the ball. Produced a lovely pass in behind for Kudus in the second half, but Spurs failed to capitalise. A reliable performance overall. 6.

Kevin Danso – Handled Villa’s attacking threats reasonably well and provided danger from his long throws, one of which nearly led to a goal for Odobert. Picked up a yellow card late on, and conceded two goals, could have been a much better first start. 5.

MORE SPURS STORIES

Micky van de Ven – Part of a defensive unit that allowed two long-range strikes to find the net. Could do little to prevent either goal, but it will still feel like a disappointing outing for the Dutchman. 5.

Djed Spence – Disciplined in his defensive work but allowed Buendia too much space for Villa’s second goal, sticking out a lazy foot to block the shot. 5.

Joao Palhinha – One of Tottenham’s better players on the day. Broke up play effectively, kept possession moving, and came close to scoring, only to be denied by Martinez. But with long-range strikes leading to goals, questions would be asked of the holding midfielders. 6.

Rodrigo Bentancur – Marked improvement from his recent performances, with a goal and contributed well both in possession and out of it. Offered a good balance in midfield, but with two long-range strikes coming from his side of the pivot, it indeed was not a perfect outing. 5.

Xavi Simons – The Dutchman struggled to influence proceedings in the final third. Could not create any real openings or moments of quality through the middle. 4.

Mohammed Kudus – Failed to impact the game consistently. Showed flashes of intent in the first half but faded after the break, rarely beating his man or linking up effectively. 5.

Mathys Tel – Bright in the first half with good movement and energy, but lost influence as the game wore on. Substituted in the second period after a quieter display. 4.

Wilson Odobert – Energetic and direct, constantly looked to drive forward with the ball. Lacked end product, however, and could not convert his efforts into meaningful chances. 4.

Substitutes

Richarlison – Replaced Tel and had more than 30 minutes to make an impact, but did not trouble the Villa defence. 5.

Lucas Bergvall – Came on for Simons but had too little time to influence proceedings. N/A.

Kolo Muani – Made his return after a month out, replacing Odobert for the closing stages. He had a good opportunity to at least test Martinez, but failed to connect with a loose ball in the box following a corner. N/A.

Pape Sarr – Came on for Rodrigo Bentancur. N/A.

The half-time whistle has blown between Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa in the Premier League, and the player ratings are in.

Below, we have given each Tottenham player a performance rating on a scale of 0-10, with 10 highest score achievable for an impressive performance.

Rodrigo Bentancur fired Spurs ahead, only for Villa to equalise through Morgan Rogers.

Tottenham player ratings vs Aston Villa

Guglielmo Vicario – The Tottenham goalkeeper was largely untested for much of the game, but he will be disappointed with Rogers’ strike from range. The effort dipped, yet it was not especially difficult to stop, and the midfield offered little protection. He should probably have done better. 5.5

Pedro Porro – The Spaniard has done most of his work from deep, with Frank trusting Kudus to handle the bulk of the attacking play. Still, Porro’s distribution and energy have been impressive. 7.

Kevin Danso – Replaced Cristian Romero, who picked up an injury in the warm-up, and slotted in seamlessly. Read the game well and halted Villa’s advances each time they tried to threaten. 7.

Micky van de Ven – A change of partner has not affected him one bit. Composed on the ball and confident when recovering possession, though he did pick up a booking in the first half. 6.5.

MORE SPURS STORIES

Djed Spence – With Destiny Udogie out due to a minor issue, Spence has stepped in and impressed again on the left. Kept Guessand quiet and showed good attacking intent. 7.

Joao Palhinha – The Portuguese midfielder has dropped deep to help Spurs build from the back, forming a temporary back three at times. Broke up play well, stayed tidy in possession, and assisted the opener. A complete display so far. 8.

Rodrigo Bentancur – The Uruguayan has not always been consistent this season, but he’s been much better today and capped his improved showing with the only goal of the game. 8.

Xavi Simons – Operating as a No.10 for the second league match in a row, but has not seen much of the ball. Still, he’s showing good intent with his off-the-ball movement. Simons should have done better for Roger’s goal as he was beaten quite too easily. 6.

Mohammed Kudus – Exactly the kind of performance Spurs expect from him. Positive, direct, and willing to take on his man. His cross from the left led to the opener. Kudus also looked to get Spurs back in front, after his cross from wide found its way to Tel, but he failed to connect with it properly. 7.

Mathys Tel – A willing runner who’s not afraid to chase channels and press high. His pressure forced the corner that led to the goal, and he’s managed a few efforts himself and he could have put Spurs in front had he met with Kudus’s cross well. 5.

Description

Tottenham Hotspur fans were left wondering about the whereabouts of a first-team regular from the match day squad against Aston Villa.

Spurs return to Premier League action on Sunday afternoon with the visit of Aston Villa to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium following the international break.

While only Ben Davies appeared to pick up an injury issue while on international duty, the rest of Thomas Frank’s players came through unscathed.

With matches coming thick and fast for Tottenham over the coming weeks as they look to navigate their way through the Premier League and Champions League, keeping the squad injury free is a major aim, especially after last season’s issues.

Destiny Udogie misses out against Aston Villa through injury

When the team news was announced earlier this afternoon, Destiny Udogie was the most notable absentee from the match day line up.

Thomas Frank opted to select Djed Spence at left-back for the visit of Villa, with Udogie not available for selection.

MORE SPURS STORIES

The 22-year-old was named on the bench for both of Italy’s recent matches against Estonia and Israel, but did not make it onto the pitch.

It has now been revealed that Udogie has suffered a ‘minor irritation’ in his knee upon his return with Italy, with Thomas Frank playing down the severity of the issue.

Frank told Sky Sports Premier League (19/10/25 – 13:31): “He came back from international duties with minor irritation on the knee.”

When asked further, the Dane added: “Nothing major.”

Description

The Tottenham Hotspur team that will face Aston Villa in the Premier League this afternoon has been announced.

The North Londoners headed into the international break on a high following Tottenham’s 2-1 win against Leeds United, which was their first win before an international fixture in almost two years.

Tottenham have only lost five of their 19 post-international break fixtures which is an encouraging sign for Thomas Frank’s side.

After failing to win any of their opening five league games this season, Villa are a side in form, having won their last four fixtures in all competitions.

What is the Tottenham team vs Aston Villa?

Dominic Solanke has not yet returned to full first-team training after ankle surgery and remains unavailable.

This is the Tottenham team which takes to the field in N17 this afternoon:

MORE SPURS STORIES

Tottenham Hotspur XI: Vicario; Pedro Porro, Romero, Van de Ven, Spence; Palhinha, Bentancur; Kudus, Xavi Simons, Tel; Odobert.

Subs: Kinsky, Danso, Byfeld, Sarr, Gray, Bergvall, Richarlison, Johnson, Kolo Muani

Aston Villa XI: Martínez; Cash, Konsa, Pau Torres, Digne; Kamara, Onana; Malen, McGinn, Rogers; Guessand.

Subs: Bizot, Maatsen, Lindelof, Barkley, Watkins, Sancho, Buendia, Elliott, Bogarde

Tottenham head into today’s match currently fifth in the Premier League table, where victory over Villa would take them back up to second place ahead of Liverpool’s clash against Manchester United.

For those wondering how to watch Tottenham vs Aston Villa, in the UK, the match will be televised live on Sky Sports.

Tottenham’s next five fixtures

Tottenham have a difficult run of fixtures ahead of them with matches set to come thick and fast.

A trip to Monaco awaits on Wednesday evening as Spurs look to return to winning ways in the Champions League following the disappointing 2-2 draw at Bodo/Glimt on match day two.

First of all, however, full focus must be on Villa, who have won on two of the last three visits to Tottenham in the league, but have not beaten a top-half team since the start of the campaign

Tottenham eye January swoop for Man United player who is yet to start a game this season

Description

Tottenham Hotspur could make a move for a big-name Manchester United player in the winter window, as Thomas Frank looks to strengthen his squad midway through the season.

The January transfer window is fast approaching, and Tottenham Hotspur could be among the more active Premier League sides this winter, as Thomas Frank looks to strengthen his squad ahead of the second half of the season.

Spurs are reportedly in search of a new centre-forward, but Frank’s recent comments on Harry Kane and Ivan Toney have done little to cool speculation, with the manager refusing to rule out potential moves for either striker.

Tottenham are believed to have £100 million available following a recent ENIC cash injection, and with two Sporting Directors in place, there is an expectation that the club will move decisively in the market.

Tottenham eye Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo

According to The Daily Briefing, Tottenham are understood to be eyeing a move for Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo, who has played just 30 minutes of competitive football this season.

Spurs were previously linked with Mainoo during the summer transfer window, but a proposed loan move fell through after Ruben Amorim insisted that Mainoo remain and fight for his place at Old Trafford.

Despite that decision, Mainoo’s lack of game time has reignited speculation surrounding his future, with journalist Marc Brus reporting that Tottenham are among several clubs keeping tabs on his situation.

MORE SPURS STORIES

Mainoo is yet to start a Premier League game this season, with his only appearance in the starting XI coming in the League Cup defeat to Grimsby Town.

Speaking via The Daily Briefing, Brus said: “I am told that the January transfer window is going to be a very interesting one for Manchester United as they may be forced into the market for a new midfielder.

“Names like Carlos Baleba and Adam Wharton have been on the Red Devils’ radar for some time, though neither are likely to be allowed to leave their current clubs in the middle of the season.

“This poses an issue for United, though, as they face the prospect of having to replace a big name who wants to leave. That name, not too surprisingly, is Kobbie Mainoo, according to my source I just got off the phone to.

‘Kobbie Mainoo wanted to leave in the summer but United blocked it,’ my source said. ‘This will be one to watch again in January because he is still not playing and interested clubs are still there.’

“Multiple sources have confirmed to me that Napoli are big admirers of Mainoo, and that the Serie A champions have done the most work on the player’s side for that potential deal. There will be Premier League interest as well, though, from Chelsea, Tottenham, Newcastle and Leeds, who have all monitored him in recent months.”

Spurs midfield depth could become a concern

Spurs could certainly use reinforcements in midfield, particularly with Yves Bissouma’s situation under Thomas Frank still unresolved.

The Mali international has not played a competitive match since May under Ange Postecoglou and was left out of Frank’s squad for the Super Cup due to disciplinary reasons.

The former Brighton man’s situation has only worsened after suffering another injury while on international duty, adding to his frustrations.
