Description

Tottenham look to have been handed a boost in the race for Marc Guehi at Crystal Palace.

The Lilywhites have been linked with a number of high-profile deals at this stage of the window, despite not yet landing a deal.

This has seen rumours surround Bryan Mbeumo, although he looks set to join Manchester United in a £60million move to Old Trafford.

As a result, Spurs have to turn their attention to other targets, with positivity emerging over a deal for Guehi at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Guehi to remain patient for Tottenham transfer

After securing Champions League qualification, there was a hope that key players would then stick around for the foreseeable future in N17.

MORE SPURS STORIES

That may not be the case with Cristian Romero, still potentially on his way to Atletico Madrid before the end of the summer.

This would certainly leave Thomas Frank’s squad light for another busy season, and as a result, new centre-back options could be a requirement.

There are few options available right now who will be a better option than Guehi as his contract ticks down at Crystal Palace.

Former Brentford and Leicester City boss Martin Allen believes this could end with the England international seeing out his contract before joining Tottenham for free on a sizable signing-on fee.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Allen said: “With Guehi, his contract is up in a year’s time.

“He could play for Crystal Palace in the Premier League and in Europe for another year.

“He’s probably worth about £45m as a centre-back.

“If he has another good season, next summer he could say to any club, ‘I’ll sign for you, but you’ll have to pay me £40m.’ So the player can pick up that money himself, rather than it being a transfer fee.

“If I were him, I could stay at Palace, play there and then ask for crazy amounts of money from clubs, like Tottenham, who are getting a good deal, not paying a fee.“

Tottenham could land Guehi bargain next summer

It is fair to say that bringing in the Englishman to partner Micky van de Ven would be an excellent pairing for the Lilywhites.

To have that duo with someone like Kevin Danso playing backup in N17 can only be seen as positive depth moving into the new season.

That could hinge on whether Tottenham are willing to meet Palace’s demands or are willing to delay a deal by 12 months to complete a free transfer.

It will certainly be interesting to see how this saga plays out and what that means for Oliver Glasner’s side ahead of a European football campaign.

Tottenham have plenty of work to do as their first pre-season game quickly approaches.

The Lilywhites confirmed on Friday (27 June) that they have added to their pre-season schedule, as they take on Reading at the Select Car Leasing Stadium in just over three weeks (19 July).

Thomas Frank will be hoping to have concluded some transfer business by then, with supporters growing increasingly restless with the lack of arrivals in North London.

With this in mind, Tottenham News rounds up the latest emerging from N17.

Tottenham want to sign Josh Acheampong

As reported by The Independent (26 June), Spurs are interested in a move for Chelsea gem Josh Acheampong, having tracked the defender for some time.

MORE SPURS STORIES

The 19-year-old has progressed through the ranks in West London and made his breakthrough with the Blues last season, recently starting in Chelsea’s 3-0 victory against Esperance at the FIFA Club World Cup (25 June).

Borussia Dortmund and Newcastle are also monitoring Acheampong, while Tottenham’s rivals could be open to selling the teenager as they look to manage Profit and Sustainability rules (PSR) concerns.

Cristian Romero could hand in a transfer request

Cristian Romero has been linked with Atletico Madrid this summer, with Daniel Levy recently setting his price for the Argentine at £60million [The Telegraph].

As reported by AS (27 June), Atletico are only willing to offer £51.2m for the World Cup winner, with Diego Simeone very keen on bringing his compatriot to Spain.

Significantly, this is below Levy’s valuation, which could prompt Romero to hand in a transfer request to force through a move.

Frank is expected to hold talks with Romero in the coming days to come to a final decision for the benefit of both the player and the club.

Arsenal join the race to sign Eberechi Eze

Tottenham have had an interest in Crystal Palace’s maverick Eberechi Eze for years, and were preparing to make the attacking midfielder their marquee signing of the summer.

However, the Lilywhites received possibly the worst news possible as it has emerged that bitter rivals Arsenal could hijack Spurs’ move and are now favourites to sign the 26-year-old, as per The Mirror (27 June).

The talented England international was crucial in securing Crystal Palace their first major trophy by scoring the only goal in the FA Cup final against Manchester City.

Were he to join the Gunners, it would be a bitter blow to both Frank and the Tottenham faithful, who have dreamed of seeing Eze in a Spurs shirt for years.

Thomas Frank’s first transfer window at Tottenham is not going according to plan.

The Dane often credited the backroom staff at Brentford for working extremely well in unison toward a common goal, which helped the Bees overachieve year on year.

Frank is quickly finding out what the Spurs supporters could all have predicted: that he was not going to find the same harmony and efficiency under Daniel Levy.

Tottenham are already on the back foot, and have the added insult of potentially seeing Eberechi Eze choose to join bitter rivals Arsenal after already seemingly losing out on Bryan Mbeumo.

Selling players has been equally challenging, with recent reports offering up another twist to their summer dealings.

MORE SPURS STORIES

Tottenham have not received a concrete bid for Alejo Véliz

Frank has to counterbalance potential incomings with the sale of players within the overinflated squad already present at Tottenham.

The Londoners only released four players at the end of last season, and are labouring to move on players like Richarlison and Bryan Gil, despite their careers in N17 effectively being over.

One player that still lingers on their books is Alejo Véliz, who had reportedly garnered interest from clubs in his home country, Argentina.

However, according to Football London (27 June), Spurs are yet to receive a formal bid for the 21-year-old, who spent last year on loan at Spanish side Espanyol, scoring just four goals.

The striker arrived in North London in 2023 for a reported £13million, but has only made a total of eight appearances for the Lilywhites, who are desperate to sell him this summer.

However, Spurs have a history of being unable to move out-of-favour players on, resorting to either accepting a huge loss or, in extreme cases such as Tanguy Ndombele, terminating contracts.

Tottenham are still learning from their mistakes

Tottenham’s scattergun approach to previous transfer windows, especially with Fabio Paratici at the helm, led to a mix of both excellent and very disappointing signings.

The North London club used traditional methods of talent identification to scout their players, but often did not factor in the physicality and mental fortitude required to compete in the Premier League.

Levy is still learning from his mistakes the hard way, and employed Johan Lange to fix some issues.

Recent signings prove that a data-led strategy might be the way forward, and with the addition of Frank, the likelihood of complete misses in the transfer market are surely to decrease.

Description

Tottenham have been lauded for their stellar youth recruitment and the number of players who get promoted to the senior side.

Mauricio Pochettino did a phenomenal job at promoting youngsters and a lot of academy graduates also were given their debuts under Ange Postecoglou.

Now, with Thomas Frank in charge, the Spurs hierarchy will be hoping for the same.

Oliver Irow signs new three-year deal at Spurs

Tottenham confirmed via their academy handle on X on 27 June that Oliver Irow had penned a contract extension.

The 19-year-old first represented the club at the Under-8s level and has since climbed up the ranks.

MORE SPURS STORIES

Irow is on the back of an impressive 2024/25 campaign, as he was the top scorer for the Under-21s side.

The striker scored 10 goals in all competitions, which included six goals in seven games around the turn of the year.

Irow’s new deal will now run out until 2028 and he will be hoping to make his first-team debut by then.

Tottenham will hope Irow continues his development well

Irow’s contract extension with Tottenham until 2028 is excellent news, securing a promising 19-year-old forward for their long-term project.

This commitment reflects Spus’ belief in his potential, evidenced by his six goals and one assist in 18 Premier League 2 games during 2024/25.

To be ready for his senior debut, the Englishman must improve his physicality to handle Premier League defenders, enhance his decision-making in high-pressure moments and increase his goal-scoring consistency, as his current tally, while solid, lacks the prolific edge needed for Frank’s attack.

Regular starts in Under-21 matches, potential loan spells to a Championship club for senior experience, and refining his versatility across forward roles will prepare him for a first-team breakthrough.

Description

Daniel Levy will need to accept the criticism coming his way after another Tottenham transfer disaster rocks Hotspur Way.

Levy has not always gotten it right when it comes to transfer dealings in North London.

The 63-year-old has been criticised for approving big-money signings who never reach expectations – it is doubtful he will ever get over Tanguy Ndombele’s failure.

Levy has also been blasted by supporters for missing out on key players who could have made all the difference in N17, as the Tottenham Chairman gets ready to add another transfer failure to his resume.

Tottenham are set to make a huge loss on Alejo Véliz

Alejo Véliz has been a huge disappointment since Tottenham signed him for £13million as an exciting young prospect in August 2023.

MORE SPURS STORIES

The forward was sent to Sevilla on loan six months after he arrived at Tottenham, before being loaned to Espanyol for his second season as a Spurs player.

Now, two years later, Véliz is expected to leave Spurs and return to Argentina after making just eight appearances for the Lilywhites.

As reported by Juan Pablo De Luca via X (27 June), Racing Club have offered a fixed fee of £2.9million, with a further £2.1million in add-ons, and a 30 per cent sell-on clause for Tottenham.

And while he acknowledges that Spurs are set for a big loss, Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – believes selling the striker is the right decision.

“Véliz’s signing has been an absolute disaster,” Wenham said.

“He didn’t make any impact at all in Spain, and it has just been such a disappointing signing for everyone involved. All that effort to disrupt a player progressing well in Argentina and move him across the world, it just hasn’t worked out for anybody.

“By selling him with a sell-on clause, at least there is a chance in the future they could recoup their money. However, it is going to be a low initial fee, which means Tottenham are set to make a huge loss on Véliz. They could recover some money in the future. However, this is a good decision to get the player off the books now.”

Tottenham must be smarter in the future

The failure of Véliz and several others must continue to act as a learning curve for Tottenham.

After winning the UEFA Europa League, Levy has the opportunity to build something great. However, whether Spurs will see prolonged success depends on how they operate in the transfer window.

Description

Tottenham fans are becoming frustrated at the lack of activity in the transfer window, as criticism of Daniel Levy continues to grow.

Spurs have made the loan signings of Kevin Danso and Mathys Tel permanent, but despite being linked with several level-raising additions, the Lilywhites are yet to bring in any fresh faces.

Tottenham are set to sign young Japan international centre-back Kōta Takai, and the 20-year-old is expected to be part of the first team next season.

However, fans have questioned the deal, and former Premier League star Darren Ambrose has highlighted what he believes Levy’s plan is for the defender.

Ambrose slams Levy’s ambition over Takai deal

For years, criticism of Levy has highlighted the lack of sporting ambition as finances are prioritised, and Ambrose believes this is set to continue as Spurs close in on the signing of Takai.

MORE SPURS STORIES

Speaking on talkSPORT (27 June), Ambrose claimed that Levy’s intention with Takai, just as it is with other players, is to make a significant profit long-term.

“I mean, he could come good,” Ambrose stated of Takai.

“He’s [Levy] only signing these players though, as he wants them to come good, just so he can sell them on for £30-40million.”

The fee for Takai is expected to be around £5m. Therefore, Spurs would make a significant £35m profit if the centre-back eventually leaves for £40m. However, fan frustration will continue.

Spurs need level-raising signings

Spurs have signed several promising young talents in recent years, with big-money deals for Lucas Bergvall and Archie Gray sanctioned.

There are other top talents within the club, including Mikey Moore. However, Tottenham risk stunting these players’ development if they cannot surround them with quality.

Gray especially suffered last season as he was forced to play out of position as a result of a lack of cover at centre-back. Therefore, level-raising signings who can make an instant impact will be necessary if Thomas Frank is to succeed.

Description

Daniel Levy has been the orchestrator of his fair share of odd decisions during his time as Tottenham Chairman.

Levy has signed off on several failed additions at Tottenham, which has lowered his stock among supporters.

There was a suggestion that the 63-year-old had turned over a new leaf after he declared his desire for Tottenham to win the Premier League and UEFA Champions League.

However, it appears as though not much has changed, as yet another transfer decision made by Levy has now been called into question.

Tottenham agree deal to sign Kōta Takai

Tottenham have reportedly agreed a £5million deal to sign Japanese defender Kōta Takai from J1 League side Kawasaki Frontale.

MORE SPURS STORIES

The 20-year-old is expected to join the first team and will arrive at Tottenham next month. Takai’s signing seems to indicate Spurs’ commitment to developing talent and building their young core.

However, Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – has questioned the reasoning behind this transfer, claiming that Spurs are well-stocked at centre-back.

“I find this signing quite strange if I’m being honest,” Wenham said.

“The centre-back position is probably the strongest when it comes to our squad depth. We have the likes of Ashley Phillips, Alfie Dorrington, and Luka Vušković to come in, too.

“It’s a position we’re quite well covered in. However, Tottenham are always looking to sign the best young talent around, and it has worked well with someone like Lucas Bergvall. Therefore, hopefully he does well, and I’m sure Thomas Frank will take a look in pre-season.”

Romero could remain at Tottenham

Romero has been heavily linked with a move to Atletico Madrid this summer.

However, there is little to suggest that Levy would replace Romero with someone young and inexperienced in the Premier League. As good as Takai may be, it is unlikely he walks straight into the starting lineup.

As such, his signing could indicate that the Argentine will remain in North London next season. Therefore, Spurs supporters could be heading into the UEFA Champions League with their most prized defender.

Description

Dane Scarlett’s career at Tottenham could be drawing to a close this summer.

Scarlett famously made his Premier League debut in February 2021 under Jose Mourinho, who stated at the time that he wanted to be eternally linked with the Spurs gem as he inevitably developed into a top player.

However, since then, things have not gone according to plan for the 21-year-old, who has been shipped out on loan three times over the past three years with mixed returns.

Scarlett was recalled early from Oxford United last season and went on to score his first goal for Tottenham in the UEFA Europa League, but his involvement from this point forward was still limited.

The England youth international still has two years left on his contract with Spurs, but could be set to make an early exit after recent developments.

MORE SPURS STORIES

Tottenham agree seven-figure fee to sign Oliver Boast

Tottenham have a rich history in signing top young talents from within the English leagues, including the likes of Gareth Bale and Dele Alli.

Last summer, they brought Archie Gray from Leeds United, who made a huge impact in his debut season in N17 and is expected to have an even more pivotal role under Thomas Frank.

Spurs are looking to repeat the trick and are set to sign Leeds United striker Oliver Boast for a seven-figure fee, according to Beren Cross (26 June).

The highly-rated 16-year-old has decided to leave after falling behind Gray’s younger brother Harry in the pecking order in West Yorkshire, prompting Spurs to snap him up.

His acquisition will add to Tottenham‘s growing contingent of teenage prospects, but it could also push out other academy products to make space for his development.

One of those at risk is Scarlett, whose career at Spurs looks in even more jeopardy than ever before.

Too few academy products make Tottenham’s first team

The flip side of all the excellent scouting being done by Tottenham is that their homegrown talents are struggling to make an impact at the club.

Mikey Moore is the shining light to emerge from the academy recently, but players like Scarlett and Jamie Donley end up going out on loan several times before often being sold.

While signing Boast will be seen as a coup, Spurs risk falling behind Premier League clubs in nurturing and developing their own players, which is why they are struggling to fill the UEFA Champions League club-trained quota.

Tottenham have had a slow start to the summer transfer window.

With Champions League football to attend to and the need for Thomas Frank to preserve his reputation in English football, it is evident that Tottenham need to make the most of the summer window.

Several players have already been linked with a move to Spurs, including the likes of Xavi Simons and Dennis Cirkin, though as of yet, only one addition has been made: Mathys Tel.

The Frenchman spent the last campaign on loan in North London, but the decision made by Tottenham has thrown up plenty of surprises.

Tottenham deal to sign Tel questioned after loan spell

Given the reputation that he made for himself at Bayern, his arrival at Tottenham was met with a lot of initial excitement.

MORE SPURS STORIES

However, he failed to really hit the heights many anticipated for him, though they still proceeded to activate the buy option in his contract, much to the surprise of Paul Robinson.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, he said: “I thought he was poor on loan. I’m very surprised that they signed him on a permanent deal.

“He’s touted as one of the top young talents in Europe, but here’s the questions that I would always ask and I would always go back to: one, why are Bayern Munich so willing to let him go?

“Two, in January why were Tottenham the only team that were looking to take him and why did he go to a team that were fifth bottom in the Premier League at the time?

“If he’s that highly regarded around Europe, how come Tottenham were at the front of the queue and were able to secure his signature between then and the end of the season?

“He’s still young, and as I say with Paratici back at the club you kind of have to trust the signings that they have because you look at what Paratici has brought to the club, you look at the players that he’s brought in, they obviously see something in him that he hasn’t showed in the short time he was there

“Without being flippant, 30 million euros is not that big of a gamble for a player who was regarded as one of the best young players in Europe.”

Frank can get the most out of Tel at Spurs

If there’s any manager you could trust to improve a player, it is Frank, as showcased by his time at Brentford.

The likes of Bryan Mbuemo, who is now set for a move to Man United, benefited massively from his guidance, and Spurs will be hoping he can do the same with Tel and justify their purchase.

Description

Mikey Moore is unlikely to be best pleased after a recent transfer development at Tottenham.

Moore signed his first professional contract with Tottenham the day after his 17th birthday and enjoyed a breakthrough campaign under Ange Postecoglou last season.

The teenager represents a new strategy at Spurs, which focuses on developing young players, and Moore has become a figure that academy players can look up to after his success with the first team.

However, it remains to be seen what Thomas Frank has planned for the Spurs gem, with a recent transfer development not good news.

Tottenham want to sign Malick Fofana from Lyon

Moore has been linked with a move away from Tottenham, with Juventus looking to snatch up the Spurs academy product [La Gazzetta Dello Sport].

MORE SPURS STORIES

Meanwhile, as reported by ESPN (20 June), Tottenham are interested in Lyon winger Malick Fofana after the 20-year-old’s impressive season in France.

Tottenham have been handed a huge boost in signing Fofana after it was confirmed on Tuesday (24 June) that Lyon will be relegated from Ligue 1 after failing to comply with financial regulations.

The French club have already appealed the decision. However, they will likely have to sell several players before a verdict is reached. This could spell trouble for Moore, who will face increased competition on the left wing should Tottenham agree a deal for Fofana.

It was suggested that the potential departure of Son Heung-min could free up some space. But in addition to Fofana, Tottenham have been linked to several other wingers this summer.

Therefore, Moore could look to leave the club on loan or permanently over the coming weeks, and get on the phone to Juventus to do this after the Old Lady expressed an interest.

Moore should leave Tottenham on loan

Moore should consider a loan move if two or more left-wing options are added this summer.

Indeed, Tottenham will compete in the UEFA Champions League next season, and it is unlikely that less-experienced players will play many minutes in Europe’s elite competition.

With Levy making his desire to win the Premier League and Champions League clear, Moore will probably need to fight for gametime in the league as well. Therefore, the youngster should consider a season-long loan where he can continue to grow.
