One expiring deal in one city, and half of Europe is quietly rearranging itself.
Ronald Araujo’s season long loan to Liverpool, complete with an option to buy, was broken by Fabrizio Romano and landed as one of the genuine shocks of the window.
For Barcelona it solved a wage problem and created a football one.
Hansi Flick can still call on Pau Cubarsi, Eric Garcia, Andreas Christensen, Gerard Martin and Jules Kounde, but he has lost the one defender in that group built on raw physical dominance, and he has lost him with the season already moving.
The profile of the replacement was never really in question.
Flick wants leadership, presence and a centre back willing to make life unpleasant for anyone who enters his box.
There is one candidate in Europe who fits that description better than any other, and his situation has been an open secret since the summer.
He has worn the armband in north London, and he informed his club after the 2026 World Cup that he had no intention of staying.
He has spent weeks waiting for precisely this door to open.
Romano had already reported that Barcelona were keeping Romero on their list of defensive targets, but only if one of their existing centre backs moved on first.
Araujo boarding a plane to Merseyside is that condition met in full, and the Catalans have wasted no time acting on it.
As per Doble Amarilla, Barcelona have identified the Argentine as one of their main options to fill the vacancy, with the report noting that Flick particularly values his leadership, personality and physical presence, and sees him as an ideal profile to reinforce the back line.

Barcelona have arrived late, seen the paperwork sitting on the table, and gone all in anyway.
That makes this more than a straight replacement hunt.
Doble Amarilla add that Barcelona are not only trying to sign Romero but are also negotiating with Atletico for Julian Alvarez, a forward they consider a priority, raising the prospect of the Catalans stripping two key figures from Simeone’s squad inside a single window.
Alvarez is understood to be keen on the move while Atletico dig in to keep him.
Nor does it stop in Madrid’s red half.
Barcelona are also in the conversation for Rodri, which sets up a separate confrontation with Real Madrid, who regard the midfielder as a priority of their own.
Inter Milan, long time admirers of Romero, remain in the background, and Spurs are reported to value him at around 50 million euros.
Barcelona, in other words, have picked fights with all three of their biggest rivals at once, and the reason they can is that Liverpool moved first and moved quietly.
That is the part worth sitting with from an Anfield perspective.
Andoni Iraola needed a centre back, Araujo needed minutes, and the deal was reportedly agreed before most of Europe had registered it as a possibility.
The consequence is a chain reaction running through Madrid, Barcelona and north London, and Liverpool are the only club in it who already have their business done.
