Description

Eddie Howe wants to get the balance right as he prepares to make changes to his Newcastle United starting XI for tonight’s Carabao Cup fourth round tie at home to Tottenham Hotspur (kick-off 8pm) .

The Magpies host Spurs in what is their fourth game in 12 days, with West Ham United, Athletic Bilbao and Brentford still to come before the November international break.

United have won back-to-back matches, beating Benfica in the Champions League and Fulham in the Premier League, and now return to the competition in which they won in March after beating Liverpool 2-1 in the final at Wembley.

Howe’s side defence began with a 4-1 victory over League One outfit Bradford City at St James’ Park last month.

“Yes, I think it's an important decision that I've got coming up for this game because, of course, we want to progress,” Howe said when asked about rotation his team against Spurs. “Competition means a lot to us, current holders, etc, o, we don't want to give that up easily.

“But I have to trust the squad as well, and we've got some very good players that need football and need an opportunity to show their talents and what they can bring the squad. So, I think there'll be an element of that, but, as I said, I've got to try and get the balance right.”

Howe could hand Aaron Ramsdale a chance in goal while Fabian Schar will be hoping to retain his place in defence after coming on for Sven Botman, who is a doubt for tonight’s game due to a head cut, against Fulham.

In midfield, Sandro Tonali is back to full fitness after struggling with illness. Jacob Ramsey started the Champions League match against Benfica last Tuesday but was rested versus Fulham having only just returned from an ankle problem.

In attack, both Anthony Elanga and Harvey Barnes will hope their recent positive cameos can earn them a place in the starting XI.

Here’s how Newcastle United are predicted to line-up:

Eddie Howe wants to get the balance right as he prepares to make changes to his Newcastle United starting XI.

Newcastle host Tottenham Hotspur in the Carabao Cup fourth round on Wednesday night in what is their fourth game in 12 days, with West Ham United, Athletic Bilbao and Brentford still to come before the November international break.

The Magpies have won back-to-back matches, beating Benfica in the Champions League and Fulham in the Premier League. Howe’s side now return to the competition of which they are the current holders of after beating Liverpool 2-1 in the final at Wembley in March.

United’s defence began with a 4-1 victory over League One outfit Bradford City at St James’ Park last month.

Eddie Howe on rotating his Newcastle United starting XI v Tottenham Hotspur

“Yes, I think it's an important decision that I've got coming up for this game because, of course, we want to progress,” Howe said when asked about rotation his team against Spurs. “Competition means a lot to us, current holders, etc, o, we don't want to give that up easily.

“But I have to trust the squad as well, and we've got some very good players that need football and need an opportunity to show their talents and what they can bring the squad. So, I think there'll be an element of that, but, as I said, I've got to try and get the balance right.

“I love the different focuses that those competitions bring, the different challenges. I really love this competition, as I said earlier, so, I think it's a good thing, we love preparing football matches and love the experience of managing, so, from my perspective, it's fine.

“From the players' perspective, I think they feel the same way. I think they've got in a good groove and rhythm of knowing that this season is just going to be about playing, then resting and then preparing again for the next game. Very limited training.

“But, yes, so the different focuses, I think, is a good thing and we want to stay in as many competitions as we can.”

Newcastle United fresh injury doubt

Howe will have a full squad to choose from with the exception of Lewis Hall, Tino Livramento and Yoane Wissa. Of the three, Hall is closest to returning, though the Spurs game will come too soon for the left-back.

“He is the closest,” Howe said. “No, this game will come too quickly for him, so we'll see how he is for West Ham.”

Meanwhile, Sven Botman is a doubt due to the “nasty cut” to the head he sustained during the 2-1 win over Fulham on Saturday. The Dutchman missed training on Monday.

“Yes, so, as I said, after the game, no concussion,” Howe said. “It was a cut, quite a nasty-looking cut for Sven. I think he had it stapled together so, he didn't train yesterday, so we'll see how he is today.”

Thomas Frank has vowed to attack Newcastle United as he aims to secure Carabao Cup success at Tottenham Hotspur.

Eddie Howe brushed the Dane aside last season on his way to ending Newcastle’s 70-year domestic trophy drought. At the time, Frank was in the dugout at Brentford - a job he held for seven years.

The 52-year-old has now enjoyed a fine start to life in North London, with a 3-0 win over Everton climbing Spurs up to fifth. Attention turns to the Carabao Cup tomorrow and Frank is confident Tottenham can progress.

‘Compete and win’ - Thomas Frank

Speaking after beating the Toffees, Frank recognised Newcastle’s strength on home soil but remained confident his team can upset the apple cart. He told reporters: “I think it was very clear that we're in this game because we love it and if you are in a club like Tottenham, we would like to do whatever we can to win.

“I said from the beginning, I'd like to be able to compete in every tournament. We have an opportunity in a tournament where we play, not tomorrow, but Wednesday, against a very strong team.

“(They are) the holders. They have done very well, a very difficult place to play but we will go out there and do everything we can to compete and win and progress.”

Tottenham Hotspur injury update

Frank also provided a positive injury update - at least as far as Spurs are concerned - ahead of the fourth-round tie. He added: “No, (we are) all good from the guys that played yesterday. Dom (Solanke) stepped forward, step by step. Cuti (Cristian Romero) on the pitch today, not a timeframe. Destiny (Udogie) on the pitch as well today. Three steps forward.

“Of course there’ll be rotation, playing every third or fourth day. If you want to compete over 60 games, you can’t play the same XI. So there’s a fine balance. That’s one of the beauties of being head coach, that’s all part of the good fun.”

Bruno Guimaraes on Carabao Cup importance

Toon skipper Guimaraes opened up about his goal of winning the cup again following the Fulham win. As quoted by The Northern Echo, he said: “It means a lot. “We want to keep making history. We went 70 years without a win, but we can make it two in two. It's a big possibility, a big opportunity, so we don't want to miss it.

“It’s going to be a big game for us and we hope we're going to be ready to take advantage in the game. It’s a big moment, and even more because we won last season. We want to do it again, keep making history, against a great and very focused team.”

Tottenham Hotspur will be without several first-team players for Wednesday’s Carabao Cup fourth round tie away to Newcastle United (kick-off 8pm).

Spurs have lost their previous three visits to St James’ Park, while head coach Thomas Frank is yet to win any of his five trips to Tyneside, which includes a 2-1 defeat at the quarter-final stage with Brentford last season.

And to add to that, Frank’s squad has a growing injury list, although that didn’t appear to affect them on Sunday after a 3-0 win at Everton moved them up to third in the Premier League.

Thomas Frank on Tottenham Hotspur’s injury list ahead of Newcastle United game

Frank has refused to use the injuries as an excuse, though there is no denying that the Dane is without some of his star players.

The 52-year-old highlighted the loss of James Maddison, who sustained his ACL injury in a pre-season friendly against Newcastle in August and Dejan Kulusevski. The Swede hasn’t played since May due to a knee injury.

Frank said: "Every head coach wants all the players fit and we get that, then we complain about the squad being too big! And then you need to disappoint players.

"Anyway, I’d rather want that, of course. It is what it is. I very, very rarely say anything about injuries because it is what it is, I need to deal with it. It's my job to put the best possible available team on the pitch and get it hopefully clicking.

"Of course there's some of these, especially Kulusevski and Maddison, proven players that prove in this club for goals and assists and creating things, so they would have been lovely to be able to use, but I think we have some very talented players who are growing."

Frank praised some of his attackers in the absence of Maddison and Kulusevski.

"Wilson (Odobert), Xavi [Simons], I think Mo [Kudus[ has been very good for us as well and I think Richy [Richarlison[ had a good start to the season," Frank added.

"Richy tried to get up to pace, but the reality is that we are working very hard on getting the flow with the front four and hopefully it will be better bit by bit.

"I think it's fair to say, I can't remember the amount of games we played, but there have definitely been some good games and good spells where we have been looking very good, so we'll keep working on it."

Tottenham Hotspur without seven senior players v Newcastle United

Maddison and Kulusevski are among seven Tottenham stars currently sidelined. The others are Ben Davies, Radu Dragusin, Destiny Udogie, Cristian Romero, Yves Bissouma and Dominic Solanke

None of those players are expected to be back in time for the trip to Newcastle.

Frank said last week: "Cuti (Romero) just walked out on the grass running with some of the performance guys, so positive, progressing, no time frame, but I don't expect it to be a longer one.

"Destiny is not on the grass yet but still progressing, so again, not a longer one.

"With Dominic, it's positive, he's taking steps in the right direction every day, was on the grass again today on his own but has now a sustainable amount of pitch sessions in him on his own, so it's progressing forward."

Newcastle United injury news ahead of Tottenham Hotspur clash

Newcastle, meanwhile, will definitely be without Yoane Wissa and Tino Livramento, but there’s a chance Lewis Hall could return tomorrow night.

Hall has missed the last three matches with a hamstring injury but was back training last week. Howe said: “He’s doing really well. He’s been on the grass for a while and is pushing himself. He’s done back-to-back sessions now. He’ll be hopefully not too far away now.”

Amanda Staveley is keen to make her presence known at Tottenham Hotspur despite a bullish club statement last month.

It is no secret that the former Newcastle United co-owner wants to return to football. Staveley and her husband, Mehrdad Ghodoussi, reluctantly sold their shares in the Magpies 16 months ago.

Amid high-profile court cases with Greek billionaire Victor Restis and Barclays - both of which she lost - it was decided Staveley would step down at St James’ Park. The 52-year-old had been the public face of the Saudi-backed era but no longer possessed the wealth to keep up with other Toon shareholders.

Amanda Staveley confirms football ambitions

As quoted by theBBC last December,Staveley admitted her desire to return to the football arena. She said: "First of all, I think all we can do is thank the amazing Newcastle community and the founders for all the support that we had and continue to get.

"It's so hard to move on from a club that's amazing. We could never move on from Newcastle and we never will. But yes, we're looking at a number of investment operations. We can't say too much at the moment because of you know, rules around it. But we will be able to talk about it, hopefully in the not-too-distant future."

Amanda Staveley spotted at Tottenham Hotspur

Spurs are the Premier League club Staveley has been linked with the most. On September 8 - in the wake of Daniel Levy stepping down - Tottenham rejected an approach fronted by the Ripon-born businesswoman.

It was made crystal clear that the club is not for sale despite the ongoing speculation. Rules state that Staveley cannot submit another offer for six months, with DJ Brooklyn Earick also ruling himself out of the race.

That has not, however, stopped Staveley from making herself seen around North London. She was spotted at the recent NFL fixture between Cleveland Browns and Minnesota Vikings at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Newcastle fans will remember Staveley attending Newcastle vs Liverpool at St James Park in 2017. This visit predated the Saudi-backed takeover by four years, showing that she could be prepared to play the long game.

Tottenham Hotspur statement

"The Board of Tottenham Hotspur Limited (“Tottenham Hotspur”, the “Club” or the “Company”) is aware of recent media speculation and confirms that its majority shareholder, ENIC Sports & Developments Holdings Ltd (“ENIC”), has received, and unequivocally rejected, separate preliminary expressions of interest in relation to proposals to acquire the entire issued, and to be issued, share capital of ENIC from (i) PCP International Finance Limited (“PCP”); and (ii) a consortium of investors led by Dr.

“Roger Kennedy and Wing-Fai Ng through Firehawk Holdings Limited (the “Consortium”). The Board of the Club and ENIC confirm that Tottenham Hotspur is not for sale and ENIC has no intention to accept any such offer to acquire its interest in the Club.”

Jamie O’Hara was in disbelief after Tottenham Hotspur drew Newcastle United last night.

Both clubs coasted to comfortable victories over League One opposition, booking spots in the Carabao Cup fourth round. The Magpies brushed aside Bradford City 4-1 while Spurs coasted to a 3-0 win over Doncaster Rovers.

Newcastle are the Carabao Cup holders and Eddie Howe has insisted he is taking the competition seriously. While not the most favourable draw, with it being at home, fans were content when Spurs were confirmed as opponents.

Jamie O’Hara not happy

However, former Tottenham midfielder and radio host O’Hara could not believe his eyes. Ex-Manchester City player Michael Brown was the target of his fury after pulling Spurs out the hat.

“Michael Brown!” O’Hara cried to talkSPORT. “Honestly, Michael Brown, what are you doing? We’ve got the draw going on and I’m fuming with Michael Brown right now. He’s pulled Tottenham out the hat to Newcastle away.

“Honestly, it’s just so annoying. That is probably one of the hardest fixtures in the whole draw. We’re playing Newcastle. That is a tough game. I don’t think we go there and win. We’re playing the holders. I’m disappointed with Michael Brown.”

Eddie Howe happy with Newcastle United win

“We wanted to win today,” Eddie Howe told reporters last night. “We wanted to score, try and entertain everybody that came (to the game). I thought we did that. I think it was always going to be a difficult game.

“No one makes anything easy for you, Bradford are top of their league and full of confidence. So we needed an element of patience in our performance. But once we got into our groove, we were very good today.

“Your attitude fundamentally is the most important thing to any game. And if your attitude's off, these games can be very, very difficult and very costly. We didn't want that to happen to us (vs Bradford). And that's why I'm delighted with the lads' professionalism. Now we can look forward to Arsenal.”

Joelinton on Newcastle United performance

Joelinton bagged a brace in the 4-1 rout and is hoping to use those goals as a springboard for the fledgling season. He said post-match: "I enjoyed myself - not only because I scored two goals, but the performance in general was very good. It gives us the confidence to push on.

"It has been a difficult start to the season for me. I hope I can keep going, be injury-free and play my best football. Like the Premier League and Champions League, (the EFL Cup) is very important for us. We want to attack every competition and win every game.

"We now focus on the Premier League again. I am very excited (for Arsenal at the weekend). We had great games against them last season."

Former Newcastle United co-owner Amanda Staveley has confirmed she is looking at ‘exciting new ventures’ in football amid links to Tottenham Hotspur.

Staveley remains an adored figure on Tyneside after helping to broker Newcastle’s £305million takeover led by the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia in October 2021.

The Ripon-born financer’s role in the takeover saw her handed a 10% stake in the club and put in charge of the day-to-day running alongside husband Mehrdad Ghodoussi. During the pair’s tenure, Newcastle went from battling Premier League relegation to qualifying for the Champions League, as well as reaching their first cup final for 24 years.

It was July 2024 that Staveley and Ghodoussi left the club after PIF and RB Sports & Media acquired PCP Partners’ shareholding at an 85%/ 10% split.

Tottenham Hotspur confirm Amanda Staveley takeover interest

While remaining a ‘forever Geordie’, Staveley has been looking at other business ventures, and has taken a keen interest in Tottenham Hotspur, who last week announced Daniel Levy could be standing down as chairman after 25 years.

Tottenham released a statement on Sunday night confirming that its majority shareholder, ENIC, had rejected two expressions of interest in its stake in the club. One came from Staveley’s PCP International and another from a consortium led by Roger Kennedy and Wing Fai-Ng.

The Spurs board insist the club is not for sale and ENIC, who own an 86.58% majority share, are not interested in selling.

A statement read: “ENIC Sports & Developments Holdings Ltd has received and unequivocally rejected, separate preliminary expressions of interest in relation to proposals to acquire the entire issued, and to be issued, share capital of ENIC”.

The statement added: “The board of the club and ENIC confirm that Tottenham Hotspur is not for sale and ENIC has no intention to accept any such offer to acquire its interest in the club.”

Amanda Staveley issues statement in response to Tottenham Hotspur takeover talk

Following discussions with the UK takeover watchdog, Staveley’s PCP International issued a short statement on Monday confirming it “does not intend to make an offer for Tottenham.”

Takeover rules mean the company cannot return with an offer for the Premier League club in the next six months.

Spurs' ownership is also complicated by the fact that it is subject to the UK Takeover Code - governed by the Takeover Panel.

Under the provisions in the Code, PCP could yet return with a formal takeover bid for Spurs if invited to do so by the board of ENIC, or if a rival bidder announces its intention to make a firm offer.

Amanda Staveley podcast released on Tuesday - interesting timing

Amid the speculation, Staveley has appeared on The High Performance Podcast with the episode released on Tuesday morning, less than 48 hours after Spurs published the above statement.

And during the hour-long chat, Staveley confirmed she was looking to return to football.

“[We are] looking at football again,” Staveley said. We’re looking at lots of other clubs and leagues. We’ve got our new sports and media funds as well as the Reuben family, who we love going back to work with. They’re just a fantastic partner and have been for many years, very similar to PIF.

“So, we’re looking at exciting new ventures across a new fund and then we’re looking at the few assets we want to buy individually. We’re doing all our due diligence and we’ll see.”

Daniel Levy’s exit has boosted Amanda Staveley’s chances of staging a sensational Premier League comeback.

In a shock announcement yesterday, Tottenham Hotspur chief Levy announced he is stepping down as executive chairman after 25 years. Levy took over the reins at Spurs and endured many ups and downs but, ultimately, grew the club into a commercial giant.

The 63-year-old faced the heat from supporters on several occasions throughout his tenure but leaves on the back of a Europa League triumph in May. Levy vowed to continue supporting Tottenham "passionately" in a farewell statement to supporters.

Daniel Levy statement

“I am incredibly proud of the work I have done together with the executive team and all our employees,” Levy told the club website. “We have built this club into a global heavyweight competing at the highest level. More than that, we have built a community.

“I was lucky enough to work with some of the greatest people in this sport, from the team at Lilywhite House and Hotspur Way to all the players and managers over the years. I wish to thank all the fans that have supported me over the years.

“It hasn’t always been an easy journey but significant progress has been made. I will continue to support this club passionately.”

Amanda Staveley takeover boost

Spurs announced a boardroom reshuffle in the announcement but the long-term future of the ownership remains unclear. Tottenham News claims that potential investors could be encouraged by the major development in North London.

Last year, various sources suggested former Newcastle United co-owner Staveley was keen to explore Spurs as a possible route back into football. According to Bloomberg last year, the Ripon-based businesswoman has already held initial discussions about buying a minority stake alongside Rothschilds & Co.

There has also been talk about her attracting further Middle Eastern investment - similarly to how she brokered the Manchester City and Newcastle takeovers. Levy admitted in 2023 that Spurs were open to investment - with his departure now refuelling speculation about a possible Staveley bid.

Journalist Alan Nixon has reported on his Patreon that the Lewis family - who own the bulk of Tottenham's shares - are prepared for takeover talks now Levy is gone. This will be music to Staveley’s ears as she plans her next move.

Amanda Staveley confirms football ambitions

As quoted by the BBC in December, Staveley admitted her desire to return to the football arena. She said: "First of all, I think all we can do is thank the amazing Newcastle community and the founders for all the support that we had and and continue to get.

"It's so hard to move on from a club that's amazing. We could never move on from Newcastle and we never will. But yes, we're looking at a number of investment operations.

Pep Guardiola is reportedly looking to replace James Trafford just two games into his Manchester City career.

Newcastle United failed to sign the 22-year-old in consecutive summers after being pipped at the final hurdle. A deal for Trafford was all but agreed until City activated their buy-back clause just one hour before its deadline.

This proved a huge blow to the Magpies, who had tracked the goalkeeper for two years and viewed him as the long-term Nick Pope successor. Newcastle ultimately moved for Aaron Ramsdale on loan until the end of the season.

James Trafford nightmare

Trafford enjoyed a solid debut in the 4-0 win against Wolverhampton Wanderers last week. However, a costly mistake allowed Tottenham Hotspur to double their advantage in a shock 2-0 win on Saturday.

In a potentially fatal blow to his Man City career given Pep Guardiola’s philosophy, his five-yard pass found Spurs player Pape Matar Sarr and, within seconds, Joao Palhinha found the back of the net. The young keeper understandably looked like he wanted the ground to swallow him up.

Man City interest in Gianluigi Donnarumma

Italian sports journalist Fabrizio Romano is reporting that City have agreed terms with Gianluigi Donnarumma. A penny for Trafford’s thoughts after his Newcastle move broke down…

“Gigio Donnarumma has agreed on personal terms with Manchester City, keen on joining Pep Guardiola,” he posted on X. “Negotiations are also underway between Man City and PSG, fee will be under initial €50million request. Deal still depends on Ederson exit this summer, with Galatasaray still keen.”

Pep Guardiola raises doubt

Guardiola did little to give Trafford confidence on his long-term selection following the Tottenham defeat. He told reporters: "James made a good first game and I decided to continue (with him).

"The keeper is a special position, of course, to have more consistency in the goal. When I take decisions in the first part of the season for all the players who play one or two games, everyone thinks 'Ok, this is the starting line-up, these are the players who are going to play', but with these amount of games, everyone will play. It was just today I decided that.”

Yoane Wissa has reportedly told Brentford that he only wants to join Newcastle United this summer.

The Wissa saga has taken a fresh turn in the last 24 hours, with the Magpies seeing an improved £40million bid rejected by Brentford and Tottenham Hotspur showing interest.

Wissa has been pushing to leave the Bees since leaving their pre-season training camp in Portugal last month, where, after returning to London, he refused to train for an initial period.

The 28-year-old has since returned to team training but wasn’t included in the squad that lost 3-1 at Nottingham Forest on Saturday. He is unlikely to feature against Aston Villa this Saturday too, having on Tuesday deleted all reference to Brentford on his Instagram account.

Brentford reject improved Newcastle United offer for Yoane Wissa

It was widely believed that Brentford completing the £42.5m club-record signing of Dango Ouattara from AFC Bournemouth last weekend would green light Wissa’s exit. However, they continue to stand firm.

Manager Keith Andrews said after his side’s defeat at the City Ground that Ouattara was regarded as a replacement for Bryan Mbeumo, who joined Manchester United. NewcastleWorld have since had word that the Bees want between £50m to £60m.

So, it should perhaps come as a little surprise that the West London outfit have rejected the Magpies’ second bid of £35m plus £5m in add-ons.

Tottenham Hotspur show interest in Yoane Wissa - but he only wants NUFC

While Newcastle weigh up their next step, interest from a Premier League rival has reportedly emerged.

Tottenham had considered including Richarlison in a part-exchange deal to sign Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze, which, if accepted, would have enabled them to move for Wissa. However, with Eze set to join Arsenal, a move for Wissa is now solely dependent on Spurs offloading a forward.

Mail Sport claims there is a feeling that Brentford are stalling in negotiations with Newcastle because they want to sell Wissa to their former boss Thomas Frank. However, DR Congo international has made it clear that he has his heart set on a move to Tyneside.

According to Sky Sports News’ Keith Downie, a big draw for Wissa is United’s rich history with French African players and the vacant number nine. Meanwhile, Mail Sport’s Craig Hope says that Wissa has asked Brentford to listen to his wishes.

Newcastle United striker search continues

For all the noise surrounding Alexander Isak’s future amid interest from Liverpool, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has made it clear he is looking to sign a striker regardless after losing Callum Wilson on a free transfer to West Ham United.

“I think it's been my wish to get a striker because we needed to replace Callum Wilson,” Howe told NewcastleWorld after Saturday’s goalless draw at Aston Villa. “I can't say that enough. It's not like we're looking at any other area, we've been looking to recruit a striker to replace Callum.

“Callum's a big miss, not just his playing ability, but his personality. So that's what we're looking to do.”
